Kanye West won FOUR Grammys last night. Unfortunately, he was a no show. Why didn’t Kanye show up? No one really knows. It is pretty interesting that Ye’ managed to best his ex-girlfriend’s (Amber Rose) “husband”  in the best rap performance category. Kanye’s 2012 Grammy wins include: Best Rap Performance – “Otis” (with Jay-Z) – (beating Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”) Best Rap/Sung Collaboration – “All of Lights” Best Rap Song – “All of Lights” Best Rap Album – “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Grammy Night Belongs To Adele, Foo Fighters

And while it was most certainly a good night for six-time winner Adele , the death of R&B superstar Whitney Houston on Saturday at the age of 48 cast an unmistakable shadow on the night’s events. “There is no way around this, we’ve had a death in our family,” host LL Cool J said at the top of the show, asking for a prayer in honor of Houston . “Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us … and although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit.” With that, though, the rapper said it was time to celebrate music. Adele got the night started early with a win before the show for Best Pop Vocal Album, then quickly got in the game on the broadcast with a Best Pop Solo Performance win for “Someone Like You.” Dressed in a glittering black dress, the long-muted diva broke her silence by saying, “My life changed when I wrote this song,” then thanking her doctors for the vocal cord surgery that saved her golden instrument. Her “Rolling in the Deep” also won for Best Short Form Video. Adele’s seat didn’t get cold, as she was back up for Song of the Year for “Rolling.” She took the stage with co-writer Paul Epworth, whom she called the best producer in the world. “He brought me out of my skin to write this record,” said Adele, still chomping on gum, likely to keep her throat loose. On her way to a sweep, she also won Record of the Year for “Deep,” saying, “This is ridiculous!” and thanking radio programmers for helping make her song a major smash. In one of the most anticipated performances of the night, Adele tried to show she was (almost) all the way back by singing the intro to “Deep” a cappella in a voice as strong and resonant as we all remembered. Seemingly pushing the needle to red, she held nothing back, swooping down and rising to the peak of her abilities to offer proof, as if it were needed, that she deserved everything that came her way Sunday night. The topper was the Album of the Year honor for 21, the multiplatinum disc that made Adele a global superstar. “Thank you so much, thank you,” the weeping, ecstatic singer said, holding up the trophy and telling her absent mom, “Mum, girl did good! … This record is inspired by something that is really normal when everyone’s been through it, just a rubbish relationship … it’s been the most life-changing year.” The night’s biggest nominee, Kanye West , was a no-show at the event but took four hip-hop honors, snatching Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Collaboration for “All of the Lights” from his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and sharing Best Rap Performance with Jay-Z for “Otis.” Though he missed out on the Best New Artist award, Skrillex scooped up a trio of pre-tel gramophones , including Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. The Foo Fighters were rewarded early as well, nabbing four Grammys, including Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for “White Limo,” Best Rock Song for “Walk,” Best Rock Album for Wasting Light and Best Long Form Music Video for “Foo Fighters: Back and Forth.” They also got some main-stage action with a Best Rock Performance win for “Walk.” Singer Dave Grohl said it was a great honor to win for a record tracked in his garage on analog tape. “It shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important. … It’s not about being perfect … it’s not about what goes on in a computer.” In addition to a standout performance, Chris Brown celebrated a major win when he snagged Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. “We got one,” Brown said, thanking the Grammys for inviting him back to the show three years after a Grammy-eve assault on his ex-girlfriend Rihanna sent him into exile. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon scored the biggest shocker of the night, besting Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Skrillex and the Band Perry for Best New Artist. “It’s really hard to accept this award,” Vernon, who had already taken Best Alternative Music Album for his self-titled second release, said about besting the wealth of talent in the room. “When I started to make songs, I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I’m a little bit uncomfortable up here. But with that discomfort, I do have a sense of gratitude.” Taylor Swift is used to winning, and Sunday night was no different, as the revenge track “Mean” from Speak Now took Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song hours before she played a Depression-era themed version of the song. On a night when attention was turned to a treasure lost, another recently passed soul diva, Amy Winehouse , won a posthumous Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her duet with Tony Bennett on “Body and Soul.” Jennifer Hudson paid dramatic tribute to Houston late in the show, singing a soul-stirring, gospel-tinged version of Whitney’s showstopper “I Will Always Love You,” accompanied only by piano, ending with the shout-out, “Whitney we love, we love you.” It was just one of the many standout performances during the broadcast, kicking off with rock legend Bruce Springsteen , backed by the E Street Band and a full orchestra for his new recession anthem “We Take Care of Our Own.” Bruno Mars pulled out his gold lam

Kanye West Sweeps Three Early Grammys

The most nominated artist of the night, West wins Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Collaboration. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Don Arnold/ WireImage It didn’t look like Kanye West, the most nominated man at Sunday (February 12) night’s Grammys , was going to make an appearance at the show, but even before the curtain came up, he was already a big winner. West came into the night with a leading seven nominations, and though he was controversially shut out of the Album of the Year race, he pulled off a near clean sweep in hip-hop categories handed out before the show. ‘Ye scored a win in the Best Rap Album race, taking the award for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, beating out his collabo with Jay-Z on Watch the Throne, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV, Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. “Everybody’s working hard and he’s definitely another big artist in the game,” Tyga told MTV News’ Sway on the Grammy red carpet when news broke about the West wins. With 17 nominations for the YMCMB crew, label boss Baby didn’t have much to add about West’s win, though Weezy had plenty to say in a pre-Grammy freestyle in which he took shots at West and Jigga . West also scooped up Best Rap Song for “All of the Lights” and Best Rap Song Collaboration for that song’s hook-up with Rihanna, Fergie and Kid Cudi. In that category he beat out some other major players, including Beyonc

Nicki Minaj Deserves Best New Artist, Ludacris Says

Rapper also looks back on his own past Grammy wins and says he’s ‘coming right back at ’em soon.’ By Kelley L. Carter Nicki Minaj Photo: D. Dipasupil/FilmMagic Ludacris knows how good it feels to win a Grammy. The Atlanta-based rapper has three in his collection, and he’s hoping his eighth studio album, Ludaversal, brings him a few more. No release date has been set, but it’s expected sometime this year. Luda won his first Grammy for his collaboration with Usher for 2004’s contagious single “Yeah.” “Man, it was a great feeling. I’m happy to be working with Usher again on the Ludaversal album so we can come back and win yet another Grammy,” Luda told MTV News on Thursday. “My best Grammy experience was winning Best Rap Album for Release Therapy (which was released in 2006). I worked hard on that album specifically to win a Grammy, and I accomplished my goal. So no words can explain how great that felt. But we’re coming right back at ’em soon.” His pick for Sunday night is clear: He wants to see Nicki Minaj to win Best New Artist. He worked with the MC on 2010’s “My Chick Bad,” off his Battle of the Sexes album. “I’m looking forward to seeing Nicki Minaj. I love her. I’m glad I got a chance to work with her. I’m extremely proud of her,” he said. “She’s just scratching the surface of what she’s capable of. So Nicki: keep doing your thing, girl.” Should Nicki Minaj win Best New Artist? Lil Wayne Paints A Masterpiece In ‘Mirror’ Video

Antoine Fuqua directs Wayne and Bruno Mars in new Carter IV clip. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne in his video for “Mirror” Lil Wayne isn’t done with Tha Carter IV just yet. The last time we saw a visual from Weezy’s double-platinum opus was August, but on Tuesday (January 31), Mr. Carter followed up his “How to Love” video and dropped a clip for “Mirror,” his collaboration with Bruno Mars . In the vide, which was directed by filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, Weezy begins alone in a studio, shirtless with his long locks flowing. The camera zooms in, focusing in on the Martian’s key ink, like the “Fear God” tattoo on his eyelids and the “Baby” tat on his right arm, which pays homage to Cash Money’s CEO and Wayne’s father figure, Birdman. The somber track, produced by REO of the Soundkillers opens with operatic wails and a shimmering hi-hat before Wayne starts rapping: “With everything happening today, you don’t really know if you’re coming or goin’/ But you think that you’re on your way, life lined up on the mirror don’t blow it.” It all builds rather slowly. As Wayne’s first verse begins to take form, so does the visual. We look on as the Young Money superstar starts spray-painting, dabbling with red ink on an unseen canvas. Mars sits atop a prop ladder, bellowing his warm and introspective vocals: “Mirror on the wall, here we are again/ Through my rise and fall, you are my only friend.” As the story pushes on, Weezy begins to add color, mixing his red base with black-and-white splashes. Still, there is no reveal, just slight glimpses of Wayne’s art. The rapper is onto something, however, because every now and again, he stops to marvel at his own creation. When the song draws to a close, Tunechi stands with his arms spread in triumph — the painting is finally done. With the song’s closing chords, the masterpiece is finally unveiled, and in a true moment of self-examination, Wayne stares at the canvas. Who is the painting of? Wayne, of course, in all his glory — shirtless, locks flowing, with a mic in his hand. All hail Weezy! What do you think of Lil Wayne and Bruno Mars’ “Mirror” video? Tell us in the comments! Justin Bieber Teams Up With will.i.am For Believe

Bieber tweets that he hit the studio with the Black Eyed Peas rapper for his 2012 album. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage He’s already teased that Drake and Kanye West may make appearances on his next album, and on Thursday, Justin Bieber confirmed that another music industry heavyweight will be assisting him on Believe . Letting his fans know on Twitter that he’s “gonna make that,” the Black Eyed Peas frontman hyped up the collaboration further when he added, “let’s make a hit tomorrow!! #collab. ‘I gotta feeling this song is ganne be bigger than huge’ #willpower.” The news comes as Bieber is deep in the studio working on his highly anticipated 2012 release. The team-up should make for an interesting track for the teen star. With Bieber hoping to recapture some of that Justin Timberlake/Timbaland magic from Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sounds , will could bring some of that frenetic pop energy to Bieber’s own work. Last year, will made headlines when he worked with Britney Spears on her Femme Fatale song, “Big Fat Bass.” Earlier this week, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, teased that what he’s heard of Believe has been “ridiculous.” Bieber will turn 18 in March, and his team is hoping to bridge the gap between the boy we met on “Baby” and the man he’s growing up to be. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition, because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” Bieber’s longtime vocal producer, Kuk Harrell , told MTV News in November. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.” Are you excited for Justin Bieber’s collabo with will.i.am? Let us know in the comments! ‘Dark Knight Rises’: The Man Behind The Music

Composer Hans Zimmer gets his due credit in The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy in “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. In the years since “Batman Begins” changed the superhero-movie game and “The Dark Knight” took it one step further, the masses have heralded Christopher Nolan as the singular source of genius behind the two films. No one — myself included — will ever deny Nolan’s brilliance, but it is essential to recognize the wealth of creative masters working on the films. Academy Award winner Wally Pfister used a mastery of cinematography to paint Gotham landscapes that are distinct in each entry in the series, yet never betray any sense of consistency with the setting. Editor Lee Smith worked with Nolan to cut the action in a way that thrills but always provides a sense of space. But perhaps the most unsung hero of Nolan’s Batman movies is composer Hans Zimmer . His work with James Newton Howard on the first two films can get lost within the chaos on the screen, but it is always there, accenting each and every memorable scene. His work on the first two films is worth revisiting, for now with the two trailers and the prologue, we’ve gotten a small sense of what to expect from the composer for the trilogy’s conclusion. Zimmer’s last two scores for Nolan films, “The Dark Knight” and “Inception,” have been, at least in part, concept-driven. A new video featured on /Film points out the uncanny similarities between the “Why So Serious?” track from the “Dark Knight” soundtrack and a song from the musical “
