Diddy Donates $1M To Fund New Bronx Charter School

M ogul Sean Diddy Combs has been a fierce advocate for adequate education in underserved communities. Nearly a year after opening a charter school in his hometown Harlem, he recently announced that he will donate $1 million for the creation of a school in the Bronx, Variety reported. Sean ' @Diddy ' Combs Pledges $1 Million to Fund New School in the Bronx https://t.co/6yOEdZLEIn — Variety (@Variety) October 24, 2018 The school—which will be a part of the Capital Preparatory Schools—is the charter school’s third location, the news outlet writes. There are currently two schools in Connecticut and New York which serves students in grades Kindergarten through 12. All of the students—many of whom are from low-income households and are the first to go to college in their families—have gone on to further their education at post-secondary schools. Capital Prep Bronx, which is slated to open its doors during the fall of next year, will start off by accepting nearly 200 6th and 7th grade students and aims to serve 650 students over the first five years. This educational initiative is being spearheaded by educator Dr. Steve Perry . “Mr. Combs wanted to open schools to develop leaders. What he’s done with his investment is embody what we expect students to do, which is to invest their resources in our communities,” Dr. Perry told the news outlet. He added that the students, faculty and parents are grateful for his donation and that Combs’ commitment to leveling the playing field when it comes to quality education is inspirational. Combs says using his platform and resources to push education forward is something that’s personal to him. “I came from the same environment these kids live in every day,” he said. “I understand the importance of access to a great education, and the critical role it plays in a child’s future. Our school provides historically disadvantaged students with the college and career skills needed to become responsible and engaged citizens for social justice.” Combs isn’t the only celebrity that is advocating for education in his hometown. Earlier this year, Will Smith was honored with a larger than life mural in Philadelphia and now he’s selling merchandise that features the mural imagery to raise money for a local school. Andrew Gillium’s Second Debate Against Ron DeSantis Takes On A New Sense Of Urgency

Excerpt from:

E xpect the Republican nominee for Florida governor Ron DeSantis to come out swinging against Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum in their second debate scheduled for Wednesday night. See Also: 5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis Broward College will host the debate, which starts at 7 p.m. EST. It will be live streamed on WPBF’s website and rebroadcast on C-SPAN for those outside the local viewing area, according to the Sun-Sentinel . My opponent is trying to do everything he can to distract & use smear tactics—but the second debate is tonight & here’s what I’ll be ready to talk about: issues that Floridians care about. I’m running for governor to represent all of them & no distractions can change that. — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 Gillum, who could become the state’s first African-American governor if elected, decidedly out-dueled DeSantis in the first debate on Sunday night. But the Trump-backed candidate has new ammunition to fire at the Tallahassee mayor. Text messages made public on Tuesday about tickets to the Broadway musical Hamilton appear to contradict statements Gillum made during the first debate, the Sun-Sentinel reported . Questions surrounding the source of the tickets are part of an FBI probe into possible Tallahassee government corruption, in which Gillum is reportedly not the target of the investigation. Still, DeSantis used the FBI investigation to attack Gillum at Sunday’s debate. A poll released on Tuesday found that Gillum has a four-point lead over DeSantis, which could help to explain why DeSantis hasn’t hesitated to use race instead of ideas to defeat Gillum. Less than 24 hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, DeSantis blew a racist dog whistle when he warned Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for Gillum. Not long after, white supremacists answered the whistle by sending out racist robocalls. Another series of robocalls attacking Gillum went out during Sunday’s debate. DeSantis has a long history of associating with white nationalists. Ahead of their first debate, Gillum called on DeSantis to stick to the issues. He’s made that request again. The Tallahassee mayor was head and shoulders above DeSantis on policy questions Sunday. For example, Gillum displayed his masterful knowledge on taxes and Medicaid , which are hot button issues for Floridians. When Instagram Likes Don’t Translate: Ashanti’s Concert Cancelled After Selling Only 24 Tickets

Ashanti may be a legend to some of us, but apparently college kids don’t know — or care — much about her music. The Braveheart singer was scheduled to perform at Stony Brook University for their “Back to the Brook” concert, but the show was cancelled due to “low ticket sales.” The University released a statement, saying, As an organization, we do our best to host programs for students while providing diversity and inclusion. However, we have struggled to execute certain aspects. With only a week before the concert, only 24 tickets were sold to students. The school added that they were already on a hard deadline since Teyana Taylor pulled out on the event two weeks prior, which left them no time to properly market and promote Ashanti as the new headliner — so technically, it’s no ones fault. Ashanti may not be selling out college campuses, but she can certainly strike a better pose than half of these youngins on the ‘gram. Oh, and Happy Belated birthday!

You Weren’t Tripping, Former ‘Sesame Street’ Writer Says Bert & Ernie Were A Couple

Originally posted here:

Source: WENN / WENN UPDATE 9/18/18 at 4:11 P.M. EST : Despite the former writer’s claims, Sesame Workshop released a statement saying Bert & Ernie were just best friends: “They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits, and characteristics (as most  Sesame Street  Muppets do), they remain puppets and do not have a sexual orientation.” — Everything you thought you knew (or didn’t know) about Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street as a child has just been confirmed by one of the show writers: They were gay.   Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Email Submit Their tight chemistry makes sense now…   Mark Saltzman , who joined the writing team in 1984, said he wasn’t trying to push any agenda, but the two characters’ connection was inspired by his own same-sex relationship with film editor Arnold Glassman, according to Queerty.com . Mark was Ernie, and Arnold was Bert. If you remember, Bert & Ernie were roommates at the 123 Sesame Street apartment. They always slept in separate beds, but they also always went back and forth with each other like couples tend to do.   Saltzman, who was already with his partner before he became a Sesame Street writer, says he didn’t know else to write them, “but as a loving couple.” Follow @TheRSMS Saltzman on speculation around Bert and Ernie back in the day…   I remember one time that a column from ‘The San Francisco Chronicle,’ a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked “are Bert & Ernie lovers?” And that, coming from a preschooler was fun. And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie & I as “Bert & Ernie.” Saltzman on ways Bert and Ernie’s scenes reflected his relationship… How could it not permeate? The things that would tick off Arnie would be the things that would tick off Bert. How could it not? I will say that I would never have said to the head writer, “oh, I’m writing this, this is my partner and me.” But those two, Snuffalupagus, because he’s the sort of clinically depressed Muppet…you had characters that appealed to a gay audience. And Snuffy, this depressed person nobody can see, that’s sort of Kafka! It’s sort of gay closeted too. The writer says his personal relationship embodied the Bert & Ernie relationship. “I wrote sketches. Arnie’s OCD would create friction with how chaotic I was. And that’s the Bert & Ernie dynamic,” he said.   Need a refresher on that dynamic? Despite receiving several offers from top schools across the country, the teen knew that she wanted to further her education at Howard. She plans on pursuing a degree in biology and aspires to become a surgeon. “Howard was always my first choice! When I was accepted to Howard, I knew I was ready to go. I was screaming and crying, and I cannot wait to start class,” said Allen in a statement. Allen says her personal experiences inspired her to want a career in the medical field. “A couple of years ago, my father had a massive stroke where a blood clot traveled from his heart to his brain. Since then, I’ve had the interest in cardiothoracic surgery,” she added. Howard has been working closely with community colleges to encourage students to complete their degrees at the Washington, D.C.-based school. The university has established a Transfer Student Association that organizes events throughout the year so that students feel connected to the community. “We know many arrive and don’t feel immediately connected. We make sure that transfer students feel a part of the community since day one,” said Melanie Carter , Ph.D., Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies. Like Allen, there are many other Black youngsters throughout the country who are entering college earlier than expected. Earlier this year, 11-year-old Baton Rouge native Elijah Precciely received a full-ride scholarship from Southern University.
