By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lily Collins Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Two cinematic reimaginings of Snow White are currently in the works, but lest you think both are going to turn out more or less the same, simply listen to how director Tarsem Singh conceives of his film’s look . “It’s actually like if you looked at Gaudi’s architecture, based in England, done like a turn-of-the-century Russian film by an Indian guy,” he told MTV News. Right. We’re guessing that the competing Snow White tale — from Rupert Sanders, making his directorial debut after a string of hyper-stylized TV commercials — isn’t going to encroach on Tarsem’s territory, and that’s just the way he wants it. “There’s a brown guy telling you a Snow White tale to white people. Just by definition, when you put different ingredients, you get a different stew,” he said. His yet-untitled film stars Julia Roberts as the evil queen, Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as the handsome prince and, after being cast earlier this month, Lily Collins (“The Blind Side”) as Snow White herself. Why Collins, a relative unknown whose profile is on the rise after being cast in the adaptation of the “Mortal Instruments” young adult book series? “Her eyebrows,” Tarsem joked. “I just saw her eyebrows and I said, ‘That’s Snow White.’ ” With the key players in place, the filmmakers are busy building sets and designing costumes. True to Tarsem’s earlier work, like “The Cell” and the forthcoming “Immortals,” the new Snow White film will dress its cast in some eye-popping garb. “Everything’s in snow, but the costumes are very colorful. Naturally, the summer blockbusters garner their fair share of enthusiasm, but recently, a lot of talk has turned toward the much-buzzed-about book-to-screen adaptations of young adult novels such as “The Hunger Games” and “The Mortal Instruments.” Speaking to director Scott Stewart’s adaptation of “Mortal Instruments,” MTV News recently caught up with lucky actress Lily Collins, who will portray fan-favorite protagonist Clarissa “Clary” Fray, about what makes the film and book series so special. “It’s an amazing series of books,” Collins gushed to MTV News at WonderCon. “Cassandra Clare’s books are incredible. I’m a huge fan myself, so to be able to play the heroine I love is incredible. It’s a story based on a young woman, an empowered young woman [who is] confident and determined, and she ends up surprising everyone with her abilities,” Collins explained. “I think it’s incredible for the story to be about a young girl and not one that is just a girl in the story. It really is her story.” Collins said she is incredibly excited and grateful to everyone who has offered their support of her landing the role. “To have the support of Scott [Stewart] and Clint Culpepper at Screen Gems and everyone, it means a lot that they saw something in me from ‘Priest,’ ” she said. “The fans have responded really, really positively, which is all you can ask for, because when you cast a heroine of a series of books that people are already fans of, if they don’t necessarily see you in the part, that can be an issue, so I feel very grateful to them.” “Instruments” author Cassandra Clare has also issued her stamp of approval. “I love Lily Collins,” she recently gushed in an online video. Following decades in the music business, Phil Collins has called it a career. The British artist says he suffers from hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, all due to years and years of performing. “I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,” the father of two tells FHM . Considering the state of the business, with singers such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift dominating the charts, Collins also doesn’t think he fits in any longer, saying: “I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this.’ I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.” But Collins will maintain at least some ties to pop culture: his daughter, Lily Collins, is dating Taylor Lautner.
