Today Show Advances WikiLeaks Founder’s Charge That Pentagon is Smearing Him

On Monday’s Today show, NBC’s Matt Lauer opened the show suggesting that Julian Assange was was being smeared by the Pentagon as the Today co-anchor teased: “And payback? The founder of WikiLeaks, the Web site that leaked classified war documents, briefly named in a rape case in Sweden. He says he’s innocent. Those charges have been dropped and now he suggests it’s all part of a Pentagon smear campaign today, Monday, August 23rd, 2010.” However the Today show, never offered any evidence, other than Assange’s claim, that the Pentagon was behind any of the charges. NBC’s Ann Curry, in introducing a Martin Fletcher story on Assange, posited: “Is the Pentagon targeting the founder of WikiLeaks for posting thousands of war documents online?” And while the the story did did air a clip of retired UK Colonel Richard Kemp blasting Assange for releasing the classified documents, Fletcher never presented any proof that the Pentagon was behind some sort of smear campaign. The following is the full story as it was aired on the August 23 Today show: ANN CURRY: Is the Pentagon targeting the founder of WikiLeaks for posting thousands of classified war documents online? That’s what he’s claiming after being briefly named in a rape case. NBC’s Martin Fletcher is in, in London this morning. He joins us now. Martin, good morning. [On screen headline: “WikiLeaks Under Fire, Founder Accused of Molestation In Sweden”] MARTIN FLETCHER: Ann, good morning. This weekend Julian Assange was charged with the rape and molestation in two separate cases, in Sweden, where he thought he was safe. The Swedish tabloid Expressen broke the story Saturday that two women had complained to police who issued an arrest warrant. One woman complained she had been attacked in a hotel. But police didn’t find Assange, who travels the world with no fixed home or office. He quickly replied, via Twitter saying the charges were “without basis” and “deeply disturbing.” Then hours later Sweden dropped the rape charge. The prosecutor said there’s no longer reason to believe Assange committed rape. KARIN ROSANDER, SWEDISH PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE: Molestation, yeah. But that’s not enough for, for being arrested. It’s not, it’s not a serious crime enough. FLETCHER: Talking to Al Jazeera television, Assange said- JULIAN ASSANGE, WIKILEAKS FOUNDER: It is clearly a smear campaign, the only question is who was involved. FLETCHER: After releasing 75,000 military files on his Web site WikiLeaks, Assange is now getting ready to release another 15,000 within a month. The Pentagon wants to stem the flow of leaks about its Afghanistan campaign. U.S. officials call Assange’s papers one of the biggest security breaches in U.S. history. COL. RICHARD KEMP, UK MILITARY (RETIRED): The Taliban will be poring over every single word of those reports, scrutinizing them even more closely than their own analysts to see what they can find out about the way we operate against them. FLETCHER: Assange says WikiLeaks is halfway through examining the 15,000 documents to eliminate details that could harm Afghans working with the U.S. military. But then, he says, he will release the papers, come what may. Today Assange’s lawyers want to meet with Swedish officials hoping they’ll drop the molestation charge too. Assange calls the charges a major distraction from the real issue and says releasing the secret files is his duty. Ann? CURRY: NBC’s Martin Fletcher this morning, Martin thanks.

Deadmau5, Will.I.Am, More Draw Huge Crowds To Electric Daisy Carnival

Benny Benassi, Swedish House Mafia and more draw 185,000 to L.A. festival. By Lara Kelley Taboo Photo: MTV News Remember when Eminem said nobody listens to techno? The times have certainly changed since that infamous rant, considering the fact that more than 185,000 people attended the Electric Daisy Carnival at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Exposition Park last weekend, according to a rep for the fest, making it one of the largest dance-music events in the country. The party spanned two days, five stages and boasted over 150 of the most notorious DJs in the world, including Armin Van Buuren, Benny Benassi, Deadmau5 and Kaskade. Even Will.I.Am had a prime slot on the main stage Saturday night, and Lil Jon came out to host on the mic both nights. Free carnival rides, art installations, state-of-the-art lighting and sound also helped to create a one-of-a-kind electronic music experience. “EDC, I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire life, and I’ve DJ’ed everywhere in the world,” Steve Angello of the Swedish House Mafia announced to the crowd during their headlining set Friday night. “Los Angeles, this is unbelievable!” Dance music has been bubbling just below the surface of urban alternative culture and in underground clubs for over two decades now, but with the recent success of mainstream artists like Lady Gaga, the genre is now riding radio airwaves and crossing over to the masses. “What’s going on in the U.S. nowadays is very exciting,” Dutch DJ and producer Laidback Luke said. “House [music] crossed over to the mainstream in Europe about 10 years ago, but America was always struggling with it. Now, there are many talented singers and rappers cross-breeding with dance music, and it gives us a great opportunity.” In its 14th year, Electric Daisy Carnival has been growing exponentially. In 2008 the event broke its maximum capacity with a crowd of over 50,000 people, and in 2009, an estimated 140,000 people attended. The event’s promoters, Insomniac, decided to expand the show into several other cities this year, creating an Electric Daisy tour that touches down in Dallas, Denver and Puerto Rico. The park gates opened on Friday at 2 p.m. to a sea of scantily dressed, happy-faced ticketholders who had been waiting in line since as early as 10 a.m. to enter. Dirty Dutch DJ Chuckie got the main stage bumping with popular remixes of LMFAO, Akon and Estelle. By 8, over 60,000 were crowded into the main stage for Dirty South, who had the entire audience singing to his Red Hot Chili Peppers “Otherside” remix. Swedish House Mafia then blew the roof off with hit singles like “Leave the World Behind” and their new collaboration with Pharrell, “One.” Oon the side stages, smaller crowds were treated to stellar sets by Basement Jaxx, Infected Mushroom, Moby and Steve Aoki, who brought out Lil Jon and Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo to sing tracks off of his forthcoming album. Deadmau5 closed out the show in the Coliseum for a packed audience that included many fans wearing his name on their shirts and some who even built custom mouse heads to mimic his signature costume. “EDC was friggin amazing!” Deadmau5 posted to his Twitter page soon after his set. “Thanks so much to my fans; you know this mouse loves L.A.” Come Saturday, the show was completely sold out, with well over 100,000 attendees. By 6, the main floor of the Coliseum had already reached maximum capacity, and security began directing fans to the stadium seats as Will.I.Am took the stage. He opened with crowd-pleasers “Going Back to Cali,” “Joints and Jam” and later a Michael Jackson tribute that had fans dancing and bashing around. Suddenly, several kids from the seats started rushing the main floor, pushing past security guards and hopping the two safety fences that stood between them and the ground. What started as a few rapidly became dozens of unruly fans. The Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday that more than 100 people were admitted to the hospital for injuries that occurred over the two-day fest. It got so disruptive that at one point, Will.I.Am stopped the music in order to calm the storm. “Y’all gotta stop hurting each other and quit jumping fences!” he screamed into the mic. “Stop acting like motha—in’ fools. I’ve been all over the world to perform, and I’ve never seen anything like EDC in my life. Please respect the culture and what’s happening here!” That quieted the crowd and got things more composed, but security continued to restrict fans from entering the main dance floor. Laidback Luke, up next on the decks, once again had to turn off the music, and Lil Jon got on the mic to facilitate crowd control. “Do you mutha—-as wanna get this party shut down?! If you see someone climbin’ a fence, pull that mutha—-a doooown!” Lil Jon joked with the fans for a few more minutes, conjuring up a call-and-response to his popular catch phrases, “OK!,” “What?!” and “Yeah!,” bringing things back to a more positive vibe. Kids began to take their seats or file out to other stages. Benny Benassi’s set came complete with fireworks, pyrotechnics and an immaculate laser light show. He played seamless renditions of his hits “Satisfaction,” “Love Is Gonna Save Us” and the new “Spaceship” single, featuring vocals by Kelis and Black Eyed Peas rapper Apl.de.ap. The Cosmic Meadow stage featured some heavy hitters in the electro-house scene, including Wolfgang Gartner, LA Riots, MSTRKRFT and Duck Sauce, the collaboration between DJs A-Trak and Armand Van Helden. Special guest Boys Noize put on a powerful performance on the Circuit Grounds stage with his trademark beats and a stage armed with six massive screens and scorching lights that were set up to surround the entire audience. The Bass Pod stage held a very hyped crowd for the smooth sounds of LTJ Bukem, Brazilian drum-and-bass DJ Marky and the world-renowned turntablist Andy C. Finally, Armin Van Buuren closed out the Coliseum with a two-hour set of all his classic tracks and a grand finale of fireworks. The festival officially ended at 2 a.m., but the Insomniac afterparty, featuring yet another set by Benny Benassi, went on until the wee hours of Sunday morning. ‘X-Men: First Class’ Close To Casting Alice Eve As Emma Frost

Rosamund Pike was also rumored to be up for the role. By Eric Ditzian Alice Eve Photo: Marc Stamas/Getty Images With “X-Men: First Class” set for a summer 2011 release date, we’re at a place in the film’s development when the casting rumors sprout like weeds in the cracks on Hollywood studio lots. Just a few weeks ago, Internet whispers had it that Rosamund Pike (“Surrogates”) was up for the role of telepathic mutant Emma Frost. But now it seems Marvel has found its blond mind-reader: Alice Eve. The 24-year-old British actress had her breakout turn earlier this year in “She’s Out of My League” opposite Jay Baruchel and is now in negotiations to join the growing “X-Men” cast, according to Deadline Hollywood . MTV News’ requests for comment were not returned by Eve’s representatives as of press time. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass”), “X-Men: First Class” has already lined up Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X and Benjamin Walker (“Flags of Our Fathers”) as Hank “Beast” McCoy. Eve becomes the second actress to play Frost onscreen, following Tahyna Tozzi’s turn as the character near the end of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” In Marvel comics, Frost was originally a villain named the White Queen, who joined up with the X-Men and became a teacher at their school for mutant children. In addition to the “X-Men” casting news, Deadline also confirms that Tommy Lee Jones will be in “Captain America.” But now we know the specific role: Colonel Chester Phillips, the supervisor of the Super Solider program. Jones joins Chris Evans, who’s playing the captain, as well as Hugo Weaving, Neal McDonough and Stanley Tucci. The film is slated for a July 2011 release, just over a month after “X-Men” drops. Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Flashback: Media Promoted Military Criticism of President Bush

No general should criticize his or her commander, and Gen. Stanley McChrystal is no exception. But the mainstream media is primarily concerned with the political fallout of McChrystal’s apparent insubordination as revealed by a piece in Rolling Stone . They are not concerned with whether his critiques are accurate, in stark contrast to other military officers’ critiques of war policy under the Bush administration. During Bush’s tenure, active duty generals that spoke out against administration policy were portrayed as courageous whistleblowers. Retired generals were treated as ever-wise sages of military policy. None were scrutinized as McChrystal, pictured right, has been in the hours since Rolling Stone released its article. The most prominent active duty general to earn the media’s affection was Gen. Eric Shinseki, current Secretary of Veterans Affairs (to the media’s delight ). He insisted in 2003 that, contrary to Defense Department policy, the United States would need to send “hundreds of thousands” of troops to Iraq during the initial invasion. The media ate it up. “Top generals, including Eric Shinseki,” wrote the Boston Globe in 2004, “fault Pentagon leadership for not heeding their advice to deploy more ground forces before the invasion or to prepare adequately for the aftermath.” After Shinseki’s repudiation of official military policy prompted rebukes from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy Paul Wolfowitz, the New York Times dubbed those rebukes “unusual” and went on to bemoan the fact that Shinseki “has not had more influence on the war planning and the allocation of forces,” in the words of another Army general. The Times also devoted a piece to active duty personnel’s criticisms of Rumsfeld and the Iraqi war effort generally. The article read, Long-simmering tensions between Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Army commanders have erupted in a series of complaints from officers on the Iraqi battlefield that the Pentagon has not sent enough troops to wage the war as they want to fight it… One colonel, who spoke on the condition that his name be withheld, was among the officers criticizing decisions to limit initial deployments of troops to the region. “He wanted to fight this war on the cheap,” the colonel said. “He got what he wanted.”… Underlying the strains between Mr. Rumsfeld and the Army, which began at the beginning of Mr. Rumsfeld’s tenure, are questions that challenge not only the Rumsfeld design for this war but also his broader approach to transforming the military. Instead of going on to examine the apparent problems with a military chain of command in which policymakers are criticized, the Times, the Globe, and many other media outlets used critiques from officers both named and anonymous to question the effectiveness and wisdom of American military policy. McChrystal’s statements could spur some discussion on whether President Obama is really up to the task in Afghanistan–the general is certainly is not the first to suggest it. Yet the media focus has been almost entirely trained on the general himself and on the supposed danger of a dysfunctional chain of command and a general who questions the president’s orders. Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter today explained, in the words of his headline, ” Why Military Code Demands McChrystal’s Resignation .” “The most important issue at hand in the furor over Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s acerbic comments in Rolling Stone,” wrote Alter, “is the central one in a democracy: civilian control over the military.” Got it? The question is not whether McChrystal’s critiques of the administration could shine some light on an ineffective war effort or misguided military policies. No, unlike military criticism of Bush war policy, McChrystal’s comments spur discussion of the intricacies of a civilian-controlled military, not the specific policies employed by the civilian government and their consequences on the battlefield. Time’s Joe Klein applauded Mike Huckabee in 2007 for saying he “would have met with Shinseki privately and carefully weighed his advice.” But now Klein is far more concerned with the ” military tradition and practice ” violated by generals who speak out against their commanders than he is with the ongoing war effort. McChrystal was of course out of line. But media liberals who are only distraught at potential insubordination when the subordinate does not aid their political goals in speaking out are commentators whose opinions must be taken with a few grains of salt.

Game Skipped A Pre-Jail Video With Lil Wayne To Record With Dr. Dre

‘When Dre is mixing, you don’t leave,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of failing to shoot an ‘Everything Red’ clip. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne and Game Photo: Black Wall Street Celebrity Favorites If he would have just gotten on a plane from L.A. to Miami, the Game could have added to Lil Wayne’s pre-prison video-shoot marathon . The Compton MC said one of the standout cuts from his Red Room mixtape , “Everything Red,” was supposed to be a single from The R.E.D. Album, but he didn’t shoot a visual. “I flaked on the video,” Game said of the track, which features Lil Wayne and Birdman. “Bird was like, ‘Listen, daddy, you can come down here. Junior is gonna turn himself in next Wednesday. You can come down here. We can shoot the video before Junior go in. You just have that in the safe.’ I blew it. I didn’t make it down. Once he went [to jail], I was like, ‘I can’t use this.’ I didn’t want to save it, so I gave it away. That was like, ‘Single!’ ” So what was so important that he couldn’t make it to Miami for his own video? He was finishing up tracks with the most successful hip-hop producer in the world. “I think I was in with Dr. Dre. I couldn’t move,” he thought back. “I think we was finishing up his records. When Dre is mixing, you don’t leave. You gotta stay posted. But I couldn’t move. So I gave it away. Fans appreciate it, though.” One of the Dre-produced records that will appear on his album is called “Dead People.” On the track, Game thinks of who he wants to murder and how he’s going to get away with it. The R.E.D. Album has been pushed back to later this summer, but the MC promised another mixtape before then. ‘Hangover’ Mob Boss Leads Best Villain Nominees At MTV Movie Awards

Christoph Waltz, Stephen Lang, Tom Felton and Helena Bonham Carter battle Ken Jeong to be named baddest of the bad. By Jocelyn Vena Ian Anthony Dale and Ken Jeong in “The Hangover” Photo: Fox There are very few characters who can get your blood churning like this year’s contenders for Best Villain at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Everyone from a tyrannous queen and a Nazi commander to a mob boss and a power-hungry colonel are in the running to be named baddest of the bad. First up is “Inglourious Basterds” star Christoph Waltz , whose stone-cold Nazi colonel, Hans Landa, proudly accepts his “Jew hunter” nickname. Will he hunt down a Golden Popcorn? Only time will tell. Being the only lady nominated might work in Helena Bonham Carter’s favor. Playing the wicked Red Queen in “Alice in Wonderland,” she certainly held the imaginations of moviegoers everywhere, but can she do the same for Movie Awards voters? All good comedies need an antagonist, and the guys in “The Hangover” found theirs in Ken Jeong. What did viewers learn from Jeong’s turn as Mr. Chow? Just hope a mob boss’ casino winnings don’t get lost. We pray he doesn’t lose at the show. Yikes! The stars of “Avatar” proved that even in a world that only exists in the mind of James Cameron, the characters can feel as real as the people they know. And Stephen Lang’s portrayal of Colonel Miles Quaritch had fans fearing for the Na’vi. Tom Felton gave Daniel Radcliffe a run for his magic wand in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Playing Harry’s magical archrival, Draco Malfoy, Felton was a worthy competitor for Harry, but can he cast a spell on the Movie Awards? Who do you think is bad enough to win at the big show? Discuss in the comments! In Video, Audio and Writing, Pentagon Shooter Left Bizarre Internet Trail [Shootings]

Authorities have identified 36 year-old John Patrick Bedell as the man who calmly opened fire at a Pentagon checkpoint Thursday, wounding two police officers before being killed himself. His Internet activity suggests a man with deeply paranoid political views. According to the AP, Bedell walked up to a Pentagon checkpoint at 6:40pm, drew a gun and began shooting. Richard Keevill, the chief of Pentagon police told the AP: “He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting… He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face.” Here is Bedell, also with no real emotion on his face, as he explains in a Youtube video his complex system of “information currency,” which appears to have been one of his obsessions: Bedell was clearly intelligent; he was an avid software developer and aspiring engineer who worked to develop technology he believed would lead to “liberty and justice. He was nonetheless a certifiable wackjob. Steve Huff at mediaelites has posted a summary of what can be gleaned from Bedell’s Internet activity. Bedell, who had a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, believed the government was behind 9/11, and these beliefs interfaced strangely with an enthusiasm for marijuana legalization and the “Information Currency” system he explains above. Speaking of the suicide of Marine Col. James Sabow—who 9/11 conspiracy theorists believe was assassinated to cover up a 9/11 plot—Bedell wrote on his wikipedia profile (now deleted): I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow, as a step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions and institutions such as the coup regime of 1963 that mantains itself in power through the global drug trade, financial corruption, and murder, among other crimes. Bedell claims these beliefs led him to attempt to devise a subversive marijuana-based monetary system based on his ideas of Information Currency. He started with a 16-plant growing operation on his balcony in Irving, CA. (In fact, Bedell uploaded a picture of his own pot plant to wikipedia.) Police discovered his plants in June 2006 and he was arrested. The felony complaint, which he posted to a pro-marijuana website, details a contentious arrest: When the police came to Bedell’s door, he wouldn’t let them in and began resisting arrest, pushing against police and collapsing to the floor when they tried to bring hm out of his apartment: Here’s what they found: His marijuana operation thwarted, he appeared to turn his efforts to the Internet and his software development company, Infoenge. (The first post on the company’s blog is October 3, 2006 ) With Infoeng, Bedell working on technology that might someday lead to ” a USB flash drive that performs personal DNA sequencing information “—presumably as a component of his Information Currency scheme. Almost every trace Bedell left on the Internet from that point on displays an obsession with information—storing, retrieving, and revealing it—coupled with boilerplate Libertarian and pro-marijuana ideology. His wikipedia talkpage is a litany of rejected edits, detailing his efforts to insert 9/11 truther dogma into various pages. An Amazon review praises the book Inside Delta Force for its Insights into America’s Secret History He apparently left audio recordings as well, which he posted to the Internet Archive. A two-part address called “Directions to Freedom” which proses “directions to freedom, security, and prosperity, which could be considered his manifesto. “Directions to Freedom” opens with Hello, thank you for listening. I have an intense personal desire for freedom and I need your help so we can, together, continue to enjoy the benefits of freedom and work toward the more perfect realization of liberty and justice in our society. Anyone hoping for a better glimpse at what led Bedell from an obsession with the liberating power of information to violence would probably do well starting with these recordings—which he transcribed on his blog here . What Bedell did was terrible, but any attempt at writing Bedell off as simply a brain-washed Glenn Beck zombie or an idiotic anti-government 9/11 truther can’t capture the complexity of his motivations and the singular weirdness going on in his brain. As a Mediaelites commenter writes, “this guy was one of those dudes to smart for his own good and far from a tea bagger.” [ Infoeng ][ Rothbardix ][ Tekgnosis ][ mediaelites ][ AP ]
