Jon Stewart Talks ‘Death To Smoochy’ Sequel At Comedy Awards

‘I am under the impression that movie sequels are based on the success of the previous movie,’ he quips to MTV News. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Stewart attends the 2011 Comedy Awards Photo: Charles Eshelman/ FilmMagic Sorry, Jon Stewart fans, but you’d better not expect to see the Emmy winner on the big screen again anytime soon. It seems the funnyman’s aspirations to return to acting are about the same as his ambitions to get into politics: nonexistent. MTV News caught up with Stewart on the red carpet of the Comedy Awards , which air on Comedy Central, VH1, Spike TV, Logo, CMT, TVLand and online at TheComedyAwards.com at 8 p.m. on Sunday (April 10). Stewart, who appeared on the silver screen in bit parts for films such as “Big Daddy,” “The Faculty” and “Half Baked” hasn’t acted in a movie in nearly a decade, when he appeared in the 2002 cult comedy “Death to Smoochy.” When asked if he would consider appearing in a follow-up to the dark flick, which was nothing short of a box-office bomb, the cable host quipped, “I am under the impression, and again I could be wrong about this, that movie sequels are based on the success of the previous movie. Now, I may be wrong!” However, Stewart — who cracked, “I think my character may have died at the end [of ‘Death to Smoochy’]. Or not. I don’t know” — did come up with an intriguing premise for a “Smoochy” prequel: “How did Smoochy get to be in the suit?” “I was never a very good actor. I can do myself like 10 percent madder or 10 percent happier,” he said of his acting skills. “I give props to the craft of acting, ’cause that’s not what I do. Or most comedians. Although there are some that are really good at it.” For now, Stewart will stay put doing what he is really good at — hosting “The Daily Show” — which won for Best Late Night Comedy Series at the Comedy Awards (during which Stephen Colbert hilariously ambushed Stewart’s acceptance speech). When faced with the prospect of 10 to 15 more years of doing the political satire, Stewart joked while pointing to himself, “Look what’s happened to me in the 10 years I’ve been doing it. … I’d be the crypt-keeper at a certain point.” Don’t miss the Comedy Awards at 8 p.m. Sunday night on Comedy Central, VH1, Spike TV, Logo, CMT, TVLand and online at TheComedyAwards.com . ‘The Situation’ Jokes About Slavery At Comedy Central Roast

Continued here:

At Donald Trump’s Comedy Central Roast last night, Jersey Shore cast-mate Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino, got up on stage to attempt some stand up comedy. As I suppose you would expect from someone who spends their days GTL’ing (gym, tan, laundry) and proudly proclaims, ‘I’m hooking up with this girl, your girl’s girl, and your girlfriend’s girlfriend’s girlfriend. Somebody’s gotta do it’, he took the low road. According to The Frisky , The Situation, addressed Donald Trump and Snoop Dogg (who openly smoked a huge blunt while on stage), and said; ‘hey, Snoop Dogg, Donald Trump and your ancestors had a lot in common — they owned real estate, and your ancestors were property! … This is my first time doing comedy!’. Seriously? I would never have guessed. What a fool. I’m sorry, but joking about the slave trade, and calling Black people property isn’t funny. Thankfully, the crowd at the gala didn’t think so either, and booed him off stage, making him the first roaster to be booed in over 10 years. Sadly, people trying to make light of slavery, seems to be a trend (remember Chelsea Handler at the VMA’s?). I’m all for not judging people for others mistakes and trying not to dwell on a situation, but it really does bother me when White people try to make light of the African American struggle for freedom and equality. What do you think? Is it becoming acceptable for someone, especially a White person to make jokes about slavery? Donald Glover Releases Untitled EP

Woodie Awards host is surprised by positive response to his transition from comedy to rap. By Steven Roberts Donald Glover Photo: Gustavo Caballero/WireImage Woodie Awards host Donald Glover has been making a name for himself as an actor on NBC’s “Community,” as a member of the comedy group Derrick Comedy and as a writer on another NBC property, “30 Rock,” for quite some time. However, Glover has also been working on his rap skills, under the alias Childish Gambino. Tuesday morning (March 8), Glover released his latest Childish Gambino EP, which oddly enough he left untitled, via his blog . “I didn’t feel like it needed a name. I was trying not to give it a name, but a lot of people named it [anyway],” Glover said. “I just wanted it to be. But I like the fact that people are naming it.” Glover had been making a splash as of late thanks to his recent single and video for “Freaks and Geeks,” as well as his scene-stealing verse on Jamie XX’s remix of Adele’s phenomenal “Rolling in the Deep.” Each helped to build anticipation for the release of his EP, which he said people started calling “Be Alone,” “Freaks and Geeks” and then simply “EP.” Glover said he released his first project as a sophomore in college — the untitled EP is his seventh. He started making music for fun, but he wasn’t sure how people would receive Childish’s work at first. He thought he’d be dismissed as a rapper, but he has grown more confident as his skills have progressed. “I wouldn’t put out ‘Sick Boy’ now or ‘I Am Just a Rapper’ now. I would be like, ‘I can do much better than that.’ I guess I was just afraid for a long time because I didn’t want people to be like, ‘Oh, he’s a comedian, he can’t do that. He’s going to Eddie Murphy himself.’ But I was like, you know, I’m just having fun. If people want to just have fun with me, that’s fine. I’ve just been really amazed by the response.” A larger part of the response saw the New York leg of Glover’s I Am Donald Tour sell out in five hours and the D.C. leg sell out in three. He said he was thankful for the reaction, but he still found it very strange. “I’m very happy, and it’s very cool that people are willing to do that, because I know personally, it would be hard for me if Dane Cook just started playing the piccolo. That’s weird. I don’t know if I want to pay to see Dane Cook play the piccolo.”

Why I’m Going to Avoid the Trailers for Super 8, and Why You Should Too

There are few films I’m currently more excited about than Super 8 . J.J. Abrams’ ode to ’70s-era Spielberg, James Horner’s Cocoon soundtrack , and Coach Taylor seems — to these tired eyes — to be the one “must-see-now-please” film of the summer. Take your Thors and Captain Americas and cowboys and aliens; give me the mystery of Abrams and his lens flare. This excitement is why you can expect me to ignore every future trailer for Super 8 from here on out. And it’s why you probably should as well.
