We’ll have plenty more from The Twilight Saga and its Comic-Con panel later today – including never-before-seen footage from Breaking Dawn Part 1 – but this scoop is too juicy to save: Director Bill Condon just teased that Breaking Dawn might NOT be the final chapter in this franchise after all. “It’s the end of the Bella/Edward story,” Condon said. “But there are so many new characters at the end of the second movie that I suspect [Stephanie Meyer] would want to revisit them some time.” What might a new installment be titled? “Breakfast Time,” Robert Pattinson joked. “Brunch? Noon?” Oh, that Robert. You tell us: Should the Twilight Saga continue beyond Breaking Dawn?
The bad news is, there is no video presentation of footage from The Hobbit in the offing at Comic Con this week. I’m not sure that anyone really thought that such a thing was likely, but with Steven Spielberg showing up for Tintin, implying that his co-conspirator on that film, Peter Jackson, would be here as well, some thought there was an outside chance that Mr. Jackson would take the stage in Hall… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : /Film Discovery Date : 21/07/2011 06:56 Number of articles : 2
We break down what we know so far about the return to Gotham City — and take a stab at some lingering questions. By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler Christian Bale in the teaser trailer for “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. The “Dark Knight Rises” teaser trailer flickered across movie screens over the weekend, and then popped up online Monday afternoon. It features so many elusive references and inspired so much we-can’t-wait-until-the-2012-theatrical-release anticipation that we’re still talking about it today. So the MTV Movies team settled in for a detailed breakdown of what’s been unveiled, the new questions raised, and what the whole thing tells us about next year’s cinematic return to Gotham City. Batman, Where It All Began Director Christopher Nolan has spoken openly about how this film will bring his Caped Crusader trilogy to a conclusion, closing the narrative loop that kicked off with 2005’s “Batman Begins.” In that sense, it’s appropriate the trailer starts with footage (and voiceover, courtesy of Liam Neeson’s Ra’s Al Ghul ) from the original film. We also see Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne here as a man on a mission, very much an outcast from society and attempting to rediscover his true self. That’s quite to similar to the way we might find him at the start of “Dark Knight Rises” — Batman shunned from Gotham City after his battle with the Joker in “Dark Knight.” Beyond this thematic and visual connection, the early trailer footage indicates that the League of Shadows — the crew of martial arts badasses who trained Wayne before coming to battle him — will in fact play a key role in the new film. Where it gets interesting is that Ra’s Al Ghul apparently died in “Batman Begins,” but Neeson was reportedly spotted on the “Dark Knight Rises” set and is featured prominently, at least in voice, in the trailer. Very interesting … Commissioner Desperation Jim Gordon, it’s safe to say, has seen better days, which is saying lot, considering how much crap he’s been through in the last two films. The commissioner has been shot and had to fake his own death, but none of that compares to his plight here: curled up in a hospital bed, sucking on an oxygen mask and praying that the Batman will return from exile. Gordon has suffered some sort of beatdown, but why and from whom? The implication of what he’s saying is that Gotham City is in trouble. We’ve seen in the teaser poster and through this trailer that the urban environment is literally crumbling to the ground. Desperation, both emotional and physical, seems to be the theme of the trailer — a stark contrast to the hopeful tone of the title, “Dark Knight Rises.” Gordon here is begging Wayne to rise again; when and why he does remains to be seen. The Caped Quitter As we’ve already mentioned, Batman quits his role as the protector of Gotham City at the end of “Dark Knight.” This scene of Wayne doing push-ups, which comes from “Batman Begins,” is another flashback to a character attempting to rebuild (or create out of whole cloth) a new self. We’ll greet Batman in “Dark Knight Rises” as a man without a legacy, without a rock-solid reputation, a superhero who has to start from the ground up. That’s not going to be easy. Thus, in this context, this scene almost seems like it’s part of Wayne’s “Rocky”-esque training sequence. That, or an outtake from “The Prestige.” Facing Bane We’ve seen a glimpse of Tom Hardy’s Bane in a sneak-peek photo , but this is the first time we’re seeing his face. While Bane’s look is related to his comic-book roots, Nolan once again has shown a willingness to update these iconic visuals; Bane’s mask is far more S&M badass than the luchador -like villain from the comics. Yet it’s only the briefest of looks, speaking to Nolan’s deft touch with teasers: Fans are forced to watch the trailer again and again, pausing and rewinding as we seek to study this key bad guy. Listen to That Crowd As the trailer wraps up, we hear some ominous chanting. These are sounds we’ve heard since the beginning of the “Dark Knight Rises” promotional campaign in a viral video. The chanting sounds cultish and foreign and scary; put another way, it sounds like the handiwork of the League of Shadows. We’re likely to hear more of that chanting in the months before release, and we’ll hear a heck of a lot of it in the movie itself. The question remains: How does Bane fit into the League of Shadows-heavy story line? How does that baddie come to blows with Batman, as we see toward the end of the trailer? That last shot of the two men facing off has the feel of a boxing match, the scene caught by a handheld camera, Batman bouncing up and down like he’s in the ring. Noteworthy in that shot, as well, is a mysterious character in the upper right hand corner: Who is that and why would Nolan include him or her in the trailer? “Dark Knight Rises” detectives out there, it’s time to get to work! Promo teases a kinder, gentler head judge … before showing Cowell will be no such thing on new show this fall. By James Dinh The “X Factor” judges Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX America got its first taste of Simon Cowell’s highly anticipated American “X Factor” series (premiering September 21) during a new TV spot that aired on Fox Tuesday night (July 12) during the Major League Baseball’s 82nd All-Star Game, and as expected, the teaser was nothing short of over-the-top. The almost three-minute promo begins on an eerily positive note as judges Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid are approached by a young girl on the first day of auditions. “Hi. What’s your name, sweetheart?” Adbul asks the contestant, who replies, “Lillian,” and Cowell wishes her luck. After she delivers a less-than-mediocre rendition of “Annie” classic “Tomorrow,” the judges — including Simon — lavishly praise Lillian. The promo pans to shots of the panel greeting a line of fans while Cowell delivers some inspiring lines. “Let’s face it: A year is a long time,” he says, as we see him uncharacteristically smiling and shaking hands like a politician. “We’ll change your attitudes and this is a different decade. It’s not about me anymore. It’s about them. I want to make people’s dreams come true. “I even think about the environment,” Cowell continues, as he gets into a Chevy Volt (one of several blatant Chevy product placements in the ad). “My attitude this year? Helping others make a better tomorrow.” If viewers didn’t notice the comic nature of Simon’s words, they sure caught wind when the series of terrible “Tomorrow” auditions pile up in a distorted montage, until he wakes up from the dream. Following glamour shots of the four judges stepping out of private planes as Guns N’ Roses’ “Live and Let Die” blasts in the background, we finally get a glimpse of some not-so-scripted footage from the forthcoming reality competition. Now there’s loads of critical feedback from Cowell and Reid, while Scherzinger and Abdul appear moved by some auditioners. Not only is the acerbic Simon back, but so is the unpredictable Paula, and we see her gushing over a singer, shoving a cup out of Simon’s hand and snapping back at an audience member. “What else did you expect?” Cowell asks the camera, as the ad comes to a close. Ryan Reynolds, director Martin Campbell and designer Neville Page explain creatures’ creation to MTV News. By Kara Warner Ryan Reynolds in “Green Lantern” Photo: Warner Bros. Nowadays, it seems moviegoers don’t see anything that isn’t at least partially CGI-enhanced — especially when talking about summer blockbusters and comic book movies. Not that we’re complaining. A movie like “Green Lantern,” which opened Friday (June 17), wouldn’t be possible without a heavy assist from computer-graphics specialists and visual-effects teams. When MTV News caught up with the film’s star, Ryan Reynolds, director Martin Campbell and creature designer Neville Page at the premiere this week, we asked them about the challenges involved in acting and working with so many non-existing environments. “I had pretty strong visual cues to work with,” Reynolds said. He explained that he was mostly working with actual people, actors who wore green-screen suits and were later replaced or enhanced with CGI in postproduction. Campbell said that although a lot of the time the actors were playing off “tennis balls on C-stands,” they all learned to work from nothing. “You’re sitting in a blue cave for god knows how long, and after a while, it’s fine,” he said. “You sort of adjust to it, you get used to it like anything else, it becomes the norm. Regarding the specifics of the film’s visual and CG-related feats, Page admitted that the alien characters, Tomar-Re and Kilowog (voiced by Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clarke Duncan), proved to be particularly difficult. “As soon as I saw the comic book design of it … I thought, ‘How are we gonna get a chicken guy to work realistically next to Ryan Reynolds and not have people laugh?’ ” Page said of designing Tomar-Re. “Kilowog was a similar character,” he added. “Obviously, we’re mindful — very mindful — of the fanbase and their expectation of what they are hoping to see,” he explained, mentioning details like body-part proportions and skin texture. “But at the same time, you have to take artistic license to bring these things to true, CG, cinematic life,” he said. It’s time to save Ryan Reynolds from the comic-book blockbuster or, more broadly, from the kinds of movies that are supposed to turn young men into stars, without really allowing them to be actors. Reynolds is almost good enough to stand up to the gargantuan tower of emptiness that is Green Lantern , but he’s fighting a losing battle. Even though he’s propped up by the most powerful force in the universe — “the emerald energy of willpower,” as the movie tells us, which sounds like something you can buy in a six-pack down at the Vitamin Shoppe — there’s no way Reynolds can carry the weight of this overblown 3D folly on his shoulders. It’s not easy being green, not even for him.
At the movie’s Hollywood premiere, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and others weigh in on when it’s cool to wear spandex. By Kara Warner Ryan Reynolds at the “Green Lantern” premiere Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD, California — No matter how different the characters, costumes and mythology, there are a lot of similarities among comic book superheroes, especially those of the big-screen variety. The latest entry into the comic book movie annals is this week’s “Green Lantern,” in which star Ryan Reynolds sports a fashion commonly associated with superhero types: spandex. Well, his co-star Blake Lively insists the Green Lantern isn’t wearing a suit of spandex, but rather a suit of “energy.” Still, given the fact that these characters seem so comfortable sporting outfits of the stretchy, pliant variety, we asked the stars and attendees at Wednesday’s “Green Lantern” premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre when they think it’s cool for dudes to wear spandex — outside the superhero realm, of course. “Ooh wow, that’s good,” Ryan Reynolds said of our query. “Ballet. Definitely ballet. That’s in the top five at least.” Mark Strong, who plays the soon-to-be-evil Siestro, suggested that the appropriate time is “on a bicycle. And that’s about it.” “I wear spandex every day,” revealed NBA All-Star Blake Griffin. “So I’d say 24/7. I have red, white, blue, green, orange, purple, navy, pink,” he joked, before correcting himself. “I just wear white and black under my basketball shorts. I don’t really go that far.” Reynolds had a definite idea of when not to wear the fabric: “I don’t think when it’s sexy time. That’s probably not a good idea.” Maybe it depends on what color you wear for said sexy time? “[Maybe] lavender, with little gold flecks?” Reynolds allowed, with a smile. “If people could walk around in suits of energy, that would be cool,” Blake Lively said, taking our question seriously. “Other than that, I don’t think men should wear spandex.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Green Lantern.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . After initially lukewarm reception to first trailer, Reynolds was relieved to see fans’ reaction to footage at WonderCon. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Reynolds Photo: MTV News Ryan Reynolds might not have been freaked out about the initially lukewarm reception that greeted the first “Green Lantern” trailer , but he was certainly frustrated. After that footage dropped in November, there was precious little new multimedia to offer the public and prove that Warner Bros. really did have a winning comic book adaptation on its hands. “I just want it out there faster than Warner Bros. can unfortunately produce it,” Reynolds told us in late March at CinemaCon. “If anyone’s rushing it, it’s me.” It was a few days later at WonderCon, though, that Reynolds felt the tide begin to turn — not only for fans, but for himself. “The first time I saw it was just breathtaking. I think the first time it hit me that we really did it right was in WonderCon,” he told us recently. “I’d been shooting in Africa at the time, so I flew back just to be there, and I was exhausted, and they put up this 10 or 11 minutes of footage, and you could feel it going like a wave through the audience.” Reynolds walked away from the convention with a startling realization: “It’s better than I had hoped.” The 34-year-old actor may not have known exactly what to expect. Though he has been familiar with the comic book his whole life, he told us back in 2009 that he only “fell in love with the character” when he met with director Martin Campbell and heard the pitch for the film. Since then, he’s slogged through a lengthy shoot and a marathon post-production schedule during which so much of the film’s CGI-heavy world was created. To begin, all he wanted to do was learn exactly what it takes to make a summer blockbuster. Reynolds ended up walking away with the certainty that “Green Lantern” is a kick-ass movie. “For me, going into it, my expectations were really just to learn — not just about the character but about filmmaking like that. I was just so blown away to see what they accomplished juxtaposed with what they shot,” he said. “We were shooting in a blue-screen stage with nothing to interact with at all. And these incredible artists that they hired — Grant Major from ‘Lord of the Rings’ and Ngila Dickson as well, from the same franchise — they just created an entire living, breathing universe around us. That was amazing to see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Green Lantern.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘You’ve got big egos on these superheroes,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Hemsworth Photo: MTV News All of MTV News’ recent interactions with Chris Hemsworth, a.k.a. the man about to grace movie screens as the God of Thunder in “Thor,” have naturally been very focused on the highly anticipated film and all the nerdy details that come with portraying a comic book superhero. We love everything “Thor,” of course, but since the Norseman will also be appearing in the possibly even more anticipated and mysterious “Avengers” movie , we can’t help but pester everyone in the high-profile cast about the film, which just started production . So when we caught up with Hemsworth recently to expand on our ever-growing database of “Thor” information, we prodded the Aussie for some “Avengers” details. Although he couldn’t give us much, he seemed excited that his onscreen brother Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) will be joining him on set, as well as the potential for a superhero smackdown. “[It’s great] to have my brother there. Even if we don’t get along,” Hemsworth joked. “[Hiddleston] is fantastic. [He gave] an incredible, incredible performance in the film, and he’s going to do the same in this one.” With regard to how all those superheroes will be interacting, particularly Tony Stark, Hemsworth said the environment will be tense. “There’s certainly some tension. You’ve got big egos on these superheroes,” he said. “None of them want to be told what to do or form an alliance with these people who they don’t understand anything about,” he said. “In the comic books, you see that it’s not an easy mix; that’s definitely in [the movie].” When asked if we’ll see the ensemble cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Hemsworth and Hiddleston) come to blows, Hemsworth surprised us with an answer in the affirmative. “Well, you’d want it, wouldn’t you? Otherwise, why are we all there? I think it would be safe to say you can expect something like that,” he said.
