As Obama Bizarrely Walks Away From Presser, AP’s Feller Waxes Nostalgic on How ‘Clinton Commands Stage’

Not that he legitimately deserves our pity, but imagine the difficulty of being Ben Feller at the Associated Press yesterday. You've just attended a suddenly announced joint press conference with President Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton to announce the latter's support for the former's tax- and spending-related legislative proposals worked out with Republicans. You witness the astonishing spectacle of the current Commander In Chief leaving his own presser to be with his wife at a Christmas party, followed by the former CIC acting as if he never left, holding forth on all kinds of things beyond the presser's original intention. How do you frame this positively while the rest of the nation — left , far left , and right — gasps in utter amazment? In an excerpt which only begins to reveal the depth of Feller's feckless fawning, shows us how (especially over the top phrasing is bolded): read more

Thousands remain stranded after floods Channel 4 reports seven weeks after Pakistan was hit by the worst floods in its history

Seven weeks after Pakistan was hit by the worst floods in its history, Channel 4 News Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jonathan Miller finds people are still without shelter and safe drinking water. Tens of thousands of people remain stranded in villages and farmsteads across the northwest of Sindh Province, seven weeks after Pakistan's disastrous floods first struck. Channel 4 News has flown over the region with US marines who are providing a lifeline to those marooned without any supplies in what is still an ocean of floodwater. Even as this airlift continues, new areas are still being inundated. Further south, near the town of Dadu, we travelled to a region in which 150 villages have been flooded since Tuesday. The fresh flooding is not due to more rain, but was caused by the breaching of levees surrounding Manchar Lake, which is fed by the Indus River and had grown to four times its normal size. Aerial view Flying out of the Pakistani Army base at Pano Aqil, four huge CH-53 Super Sea-Stallion helicopters and four smaller CH-46 Sea Knights have spent more than a month flying several such mercy-missions each day. Their airdrops have been focused on a region, on the east bank of the River Indus, southwest of the city of Jacobabad, whose population was evacuated last month. From the air, travelling at 170 miles per hour, all you can see below is water, stretching from horizon to horizon for mile after mile. The helicopters land where they can find enough dry ground to put down, but usually end up dropping their aid supplies, flour and high-energy biscuits, as they hover 20 feet above the ground. The US Marines, accompanied by Pakistani soldiers, are greeted by scenes of desperation, as hungry villagers, who will not have eaten properly in weeks, chase after the jettisoned boxes and sacks and fight the powerful downdraft of the helicopter rotors to get to them first. It is the survival of the fastest. The Marines, many of whom until this mission had been stationed in the Gulf of Aden in anti-piracy operations off Somalia, have been deeply affected by what they have witnessed in Pakistan. “I see our mission here as trying to help people who are starving. I see our mission as trying to alleviate human suffering. That is our mission,” said Rear Admiral Sinclair Harris, Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Five. “If a side bit of it happens with better will, better relations with the Pakistan government, that's fine. I know we've made a difference, especially to those starving on ground. These people have not eaten for four to six weeks. We will do anything we can to get out and help them sustain while we wait for roads to open up. I know we’ve made a difference.” Flying over this region we spotted many farms, villages, and even entire towns which had been entirely abandoned, their inhabitants evacuated to the hundreds of camps which have been set up for displaced people. There are more than 200 such camps in the city of Sukkur, which straddles the Indus, a short distance from the big Pakistan army base from which the US Marines fly. More than 150,000 people have converged on Sukkur, having been forced to abandon their homes. Contaminated water In villages where people do remain, drinking water sources will have been contaminated. No one has yet begun to assess the health situation in these isolated areas. There have been warnings of a looming malarial epidemic as mosquitoes are breeding in huge numbers in the stinking, stagnant flood water as it evaporates. Other waterborne diseases pose serious health risks, while malnutrition, particularly among children, could lead to many deaths. Rice crops in flooded areas are ruined and the seed crop destroyed. Ten million Pakistanis will be reliant on food aid for at least another year. Ever greater numbers are being added to the ranks of the homeless. South of Dadu, near the town of Bhan Saeedabad, more than 150 villages have been submerged since Tuesday, the result of a kilometre-long breach in nearby Manchar Lake. The lake proved unable to cope with the pressure of floodwater build-up. We took a boat to the village of Jadani, a few miles south of Bhan Saeedabad. Half the village has been submerged and many of its 650 residents have evacuated following a government warning. We heard of many villages, however, which were hit by the floodwater without warning. 'Shock and sadness' The rice fields of Jadani, which is home to the Pahnwar tribal clan, are now under six to eight feet of water. A woman whose house was also submerged told us: “We are in a state of shock and sadness. Many of our homes have been destroyed,” said Naseeba Khatoon. “I am staying in someone else's house for now. The children are hungry. There is no clear clean water to drink. There is no sanitation. What will we do? When the water recedes, we will just have to rebuild,” she said. Thousands of people have fled into Bhan Saeedabad district, but they are receiving little in the way of assistance and Channel 4 News did not encounter any international relief organisations in the area. The Pakistan Navy is running a rescue operation, ferrying villagers who have been forced to evacuate, to Bhan Saeedabad. On the southern side of this flooded area, the city of Sehwan which is sacred to Sufis, has been badly affected. More than 1,400 houses are reported to have collapsed there. Local newspaper reports on Friday said the floodwater now threatens to breach another protective embankment between Sehwan and Larkana, hometown of the Bhutto dynasty. added by: treewolf39

Acid Attack Was Faked: Bethany Storro Admits to Police She Maimed Herself

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/09/16/washington.acid.attack/ CNN) — A 28-year-old woman who said an unknown assailant threw a cup of caustic liquid in her face has admitted her injuries were self-inflicted, Vancouver, Washington, police said Thursday. Bethany Storro was being interviewed by detectives, and whether she will be charged will be up to prosecutors, police said. “She is extremely upset,” said police Commander Marla Schuman. “She is very remorseful. In many ways it got bigger than she expected.” Police would not speculate on Storro's motives, only saying the August 30 incident did not occur as she described and that there were discrepancies in her account, including wearing sunglasses in the evening. They also had questions about the liquid's splash patterns on Storro's face. Officers acquired a search warrant and conducted a search Thursday morning. They removed several undisclosed items, but said they did not find a substance that might have caused her injuries. Video: Police: Acid attack was self-inflicted RELATED TOPICS Criminal Assault Crime Vancouver (Washington) Vancouver had searched for an assailant, described as an African-American woman with an athletic build and slicked-back hair pulled into a pony tail. Storro was released from an Oregon hospital on September 5 after undergoing surgery for her injuries after the alleged attack. Police spent hundreds of hours on the case and the community came together to offer donations for Storro's treatment. “It has had an impact on our community,” said Police Chief Clifford Cook. “It has brought negative attention on our community that is undeserved.” Storro's family was also being interviewed, police said. They described her as being in a fragile mental state. Storro credited a new pair of sunglasses — which she said she bought just 20 minutes before the attack — with saving her eyesight. “God is watching over me,” Storro, of Vancouver, told CNN affiliate KATU in Portland, Oregon, at the time. “I believe in him. That his hands are on me and I can't live the rest of my life like that — in fear. I can't let what she did to me wreck my life.” Storro told KATU that she had stopped at a Vancouver Starbucks about 7:15 p.m., just after she had gone back to buy a pair of sunglasses that she had seen earlier. The woman walked up to her and said, “Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?” When Storro declined, the woman threw the contents of the cup in her face and ran off, Storro claimed at the time added by: keithponder

Ed Schultz: Obama’s School Speech Should Be Mandatory For All Students

At certain schools across the country, parents possessed the authority to pull their children from class Tuesday so as not to witness President Obama’s address to students nationwide – and Ed Schultz believes that constitutes an “opt-out for Right-wing whackos.” Schultz seemed to be not in favor of academic freedom – in this case. Decrying opposition to the speech as “perverse conservative hatred” for Obama and “motivated by race,” Schultz was apparently doubly-mad about this, as he hit the issue hard for two nights in a row on his MSNBC show. “I think the President’s speech should be mandatory for all students,” he insisted. Some public schools notified parents if their children would be watching the speech, while others left the decision to the teachers whether or not to show it. “If you’re a superintendent, and it wasn’t shown in your school, or in every one of your classrooms, you ought to be ashamed,” Schultz raged. “It’s amazing you’re on the payroll in this country.” “Educators are trying to keep your kids away from President Obama,” he warned, sounding somewhat like a fear-mongering political TV ad. “The conservative movement in this country wants to brand the thinking of young people like cattle.” And why should students be forced to listen to the speech? “This is the President talking to kids about bettering themselves,” Schultz claimed. However, he argued that parents should not even have a say in whether their child listens to the speech. Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter agreed with him, appearing on Schultz’s Monday evening show. Alter asked if the same teachers provided an opt-out clause for parents when President Bush and President Reagan were in the White House. If not, they should be “ashamed,” he admonished. “That’s the subtext of this, that he’s not really the President,” Alter said of conservatives’ opposition to Obama’s speech. “He’s the ‘Other.’ He’s an alien. He’s not our President. That’s not the way things are supposed to work in America. Elections are supposed to have consequences. People should support the results of the election.” “Conservatives, well – they hate public education,” Schultz snarled on his Tuesday show. He added that their opposition is “motivated by race,” and that “there are still millions of people who just don’t want to see their kids have any association with anyone who’s black.” A partial transcript of the two segments, which aired on September 13 and 14, at 6:48 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. EDT respectively, is as follows: THE ED SHOW 9/13/10 6:48 p.m. EDT ED SCHULTZ: Educators are trying to keep your kids away from President Obama. (…) SCHULTZ: And I’m sorry to say folks across America are still suffering from the effects of Righty fear-mongering after the President – and so concerned about the President indoctrinating students. Now in flyover country, let’s take for instance in West Fargo, ND – parents have to be notified if their kids will be watching the speech. And they have to have the option to remove their child from class during the address. Down in Texas, students – well they’ve got to get their parents to sign permission slips to watch the President of the United States. This is absolutely outrageous and ridiculous. Last year we saw the same kind of garbage that was thrown out there by the Righties that infiltrated into the public schools. But all the President did was urge students back then to stay in school and work hard. There was no agenda, no socialist indoctrination. The President of the United States is a prime example of how far you can go if you’re willing to work hard. Treating it as a controversial event with an opt-out for Right-wing whackos I think is appalling. I think the President’s speech should be mandatory for all students.   (…) SCHULTZ: Jonathan, is this a product of a lot of fear-mongering that has taken place surrounding the Obama presidency? What do you think? JONATHAN ALTER, Senior Editor, Newsweek: Oh absolutely. Look, you could barely understand it last year, I mean, even though it was outrageous then, too, because you could argue, okay, maybe some of the far-Right believed some of the right-wing propaganda that he would use the occasion to indoctrinate. But then, as you said, he gave the speech, “Stay in school, work hard, follow your dreams.” So they know what the message is, so for them to ban kids from – prevent kids from seeing it this year is triply ridiculous. Because we know what he’s going to say. SCHULTZ: We have gutless administrators, in my opinion, that don’t have the guts to stand up. In some school districts across the country, they say “Oh well we’ll leave it up to the teachers, meaning the teachers will make a decision in the classroom whether the President’s going to be seen or not. The administration gives them no cover whatsoever, no leadership whatsoever. This is the President talking to kids about bettering themselves, and it’s being, you know – ALTER: And a question for every one of those teachers and administrators – did you do the same when George H. W. Bush and Ronald Reagan gave their speeches, if you’ve been in the schools long enough? Did you do the same? If not, if not, if you didn’t give parents the chance to opt out you should be completely ashamed of yourself if you didn’t do it in this case. It’s basically saying that this President isn’t legitimate. That’s the subtext of this, that he’s not really the President. He’s the “Other.” He’s an alien. He’s not our President. That’s not the way things are supposed to work in America. Elections are supposed to have consequences. People should support the results of the election.   THE ED SHOW 9/14/10 6:00 p.m. EDT ED SCHULTZ: I’m on fire that conservatives have taken their warped hatred of President Obama into public schools in this country. Parents are shielding kids from watching the President’s “Back to School” message. Can you believe it? What a low-point for this country. (…) SCHULTZ: The perverse conservative hatred for President Obama has infiltrated public schools all across this country. It’s a debate that’s being held in every school district. … For the second straight year, the President of the United States took time to give an uplifting, positive, forward-thinking message to American school kids for the second straight year. Conservatives, what are they doing? Well they’re trying to protect young, impressionable ears and minds from his message. Here’s the deal. In Aiken County, SC, parents were given the choice to opt their children out of the President’s education speech today. In Fargo, ND, parents were given the option to show or not show the speech. And a school near Austin, TX required parents to fill out a permission slip so their kids could watch the President of the United States give their kids this message. (…) SCHULTZ: If you’re a superintendent, and it wasn’t shown in your school, or in every one of your classrooms, you ought to be ashamed. It’s amazing you’re on the payroll in this country, and that’s what’s wrong with education in this country. We don’t have people who can make positive decisions. This is crazy. Now I’ve talked with parents from all over America on my talk show about this for the last two days. A woman in Colorado told me a principal at her kid’s school said that the President was too controversial! This is a low moment in America. The level of acceptance for keeping kids away from the President is disgusting. All of this is fueled by the nutjobs on the Right, Beck saying that the President has a deep-seated hatred for white people, Newt out there trying to make Americans believe that the President is from Kenya. The list goes on and on, and you know who the culprits are. The conservative movement in this country wants to brand the thinking of young people like cattle. It’s outrageous this kind of thinking is commonplace in American public schools. He is the President of the United States of America elected by American citizens! But, you see, conservatives, well – they hate public education. They’re afraid to ask “Where is the leadership?” I’ll ask it tonight. This is all part of villifying public education on the part of the conservatives. Superintendents who shied away from this are just walking in lock step with those who are scared. Superintendents should make the correct call, and not put the burden on the teachers. A speech like this should have been mandatory, it should have been not even considered whether it’s an issue or not. This, you know, if it was Ronald Reagan, or if it was George W. Bush, Hannity, Limbaugh – their heads would explode. They’d be screaming about the liberal schoolteachers dishonoring the Commander-in-Chief during a time of war. But nobody seems to care about dishonoring the black President. I think a lot of this is motivated by race. There are still millions of people who just don’t want to see their kids have any association with anyone who’s black. That’s right. What’s wrong with our country? What’s wrong with this picture? I mean, I can’t believe that liberals sit back and take this garbage. Where’s the conversation about this at the leadership level in politics? This is a kitchen table issue that I think the Democratic leadership team should speak to across this country. The story speaks to the decay of our country, the lack of respect for the Oval Office, the lack of respect for our elections, the lack of acceptance that Barack Obama is, in fact, the President of the United States. Now if you’re a superintendent, I should probably point out to you that the irony is that this President is probably one of the most academically-accomplished Presidents we’ve ever had. And his critic across the street loves to tell people that he’s a college dropout. So you make the choice. You mean to tell me that we have school administrators in this country that are so afraid of the local school board, and so concerned about their job and their security that they’re afraid to put the President of the United States, with a positive message about education, in their school? Hell, you’re no better than the politicians that take money in Washington. You’re all about your job. You’re afraid to stand up. And this is one of the problems we have in public education in this country – we don’t have enough leaders. We don’t have enough people that stand up and say “Look, this is the correct thing to do because he’s the President of the United States.” Conversely, what do you think the kind of problem that would be created if President Obama were to take this opportunity and really give a strong speech about universal health care? Or really give a strong speech about taxes and say, “Well, you know your dad makes over $250,000 a year, I think that, heck, he ought to be paying more.” You think the President would do something like that? Well, in the twisted thinking of these Righties, they think he’ll do anything. In fact, one broadcaster on Fox is now saying that President Obama is going to lead liberals to violence if the election doesn’t go their way. I guess this is why we have a segment on this show called “Psycho Talk.” It is a sad day for America, because there are other countries around the world that watch our model of entrepreneurship in developing young minds to be aggressive in the capitalistic system in this country. And what message are we sending? “Hell, they don’t even let Obama speak to their kids in public schools. America’s on the decline. We can kick their ass. Let’s see if we can get more of their jobs.” Yes, there is a ripple effect throughout the whole thing.

Lady Gaga’s White-Carpet Guests Talk VMA VIP Experience

Gaga met the members of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network last week in Washington, D.C. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with discharged soldiers from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage You have to hand it to Lady Gaga . In addition to being a record-setting winner at Sunday night’s Video Music Awards , the international pop icon is a woman of conviction. Case in point. Last Tuesday, during the Washington, D.C., stop on her Monster Ball Tour, Gaga, a longtime gay-rights advocate, told her team that she wanted to meet with some members of the U.S. Armed Services who had been discharged because they are openly homosexual. Gaga was interested in learning more about the recent push to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy instigated by a California judge’s ruling last week that the Clinton-era military rule was unconstitutional and a vote by the House to repeal the legislation. “We met her before the show last week and told her our stories, and that’s when she said she wanted to do more,” said David Hall, 36, a former member of the Air Force who was booted out in August 2002 after a female cadet told his commander that he was gay and in an relationship. When confronted, Hall said he told his commanding officer he had no comment, but “he took her word for it over mine,” and Hall, a five-year veteran, was discharged. “We talked to [Gaga] for a bit and she said, ‘It would be great if I could bring you to the VMAs,’ ” he said. A longtime Gaga fan, Hall was ecstatic about the idea, but said it seemed unlikely that they could pull it off on such short notice. But when you’re Lady Gaga and you have 13 VMA nominations, it seems anything is possible. “I just kept thinking, ‘How can we get this together? Can we do it that fast?’ ” Hall said. “To my surprise, we were able to pull it off.” Hall and three of his cohorts — Katie Miller, Stacy Vasquez and Mike Almy &#8212 ended up walking the white carpet with Gaga and chatting with MTV’s Sway before they took their seats right behind Gaga in the Nokia Theatre in some of the most primo spots in the house. Hall has been working with the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network ( SLDN.org ) since 2006, helping the advocacy organization push to have “Don’t Ask” repealed. He said even with all the work he’s been doing for the organization, having Gaga spread the word to her 6 million Twitter followers and millions of VMA viewers was a huge boost. “I’ve done tons of media over the past four years … but I knew she would reach out to her Little Monsters and tell them about the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask’ on the white carpet and [it would have a huge impact],” he said. “You couldn’t ask for a better person to do it. She’s very genuine. It’s not some ploy to get attention. She really wanted to know about the repeal and why we need to get rid of ‘Don’t Ask.’ ” Though President Clinton had campaigned on the promise to allow anyone to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation, the DADT policy was implemented in 1993 as a compromise gesture with Congress. It bars military officials from asking service members to reveal their sexual orientation, but also mandates that they could be discharged for offering the information themselves. It has long been criticized by the LGBT community over claims that it has led to harassment of service members, investigations based on rumors, and a double standard based on the military’s code of honesty and integrity. To date, more than 14,000 service members have been fired under the law. Gaga’s decision to use the VMA platform to publicize the attempt to push the repeal of “Don’t Ask” through — a commitment President Obama made during his campaign and which he has repeatedly said is his goal — came at just the right time, according to Hall. “The Senate is just coming back and we’re hoping that they will pass something this month,” he said, noting that Democratic control of Congress could possibly be weakened if Republican candidates score key victories in the November elections, which could set the repeal process back once again. “We were telling her that it is very important to speak out on this now,” Hall said of SLDN’s message to Gaga, who paid for the service members to fly out to Los Angeles for the VMAs. In addition to their swank seats and walk down the carpet, Hall said the organization members met with Gaga as she was prepping for the show earlier in the day Sunday to go over talking points. They also were invited to attend the post-VMA party put on by Gaga’s Interscope Records label, where they chatted with Mother Monster and her actual mother, Cynthia Germanotta. Hall’s highlight? “She gave us a shout-out during the acceptance for her first award,” he said. “And the interview with Sway on the white carpet … But every time Lady Gaga won, it was great. And when she won Video of the Year, I loved her meat outfit .” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer Openly Supports Gay-Rights Cause in DADT Ruling

In a brief interview with the openly-gay former Army Lt. Dan Choi MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer gave her vocal support to his cause, hoping that the military’s policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ends soon. Brewer has covered the issue quite one-sidedly in the past on behalf of the gay rights side. She has hosted many gay-rights advocates on her news hour and has barely covered the other side of the DADT issue. Examples: here , here , and here . Brewer was covering the ruling of a federal judge in California that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” is unconstitutional. The judge has not yet issued a final ruling, but plans to do so in two weeks. Brewer’s lone guest in the segment was Choi, an outspoken advocate and poster boy for the military gay-rights movement, who was arrested this past spring for chaining himself to the White House fence in protest of DADT. The news anchor first asked the lieutenant how he felt about the ruling. Then she commented that the DADT policy bans, which include bans on intimate conduct between gays and speaking about loved ones, act as a “severe impediment to dealing effectively” for soldiers far from home. At the end of the short interview, Brewer told Choi that she stands with him and thinks that “justice delayed is justice denied,” hoping that the final ruling on the matter comes soon. A transcript of the segment, which aired on September 10 at 12:47 p.m. EDT, is as follows: CONTESSA BREWER: It has been a long time coming, but this may be the end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” A federal judge in California has ruled that the military’s ban on openly-gay service members is unconstitutional. The judge says she will issue a final ruling, ending the policy for good, in about two weeks. Former Army Lt. Dan Choi, an outspoken opponent of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” he’s an Iraq War veteran, and in April he handcuffed himself to the gates of the White House in a protest of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Was arrested, spent a night in prison and was discharged from the military in July. Lt. Dan Choi joins me now. Good to see you, sir. DAN CHOI: Good to see you, Contessa. BREWER: What’s your reaction to this judge’s ruling? CHOI: It’s a victory today for the Constitution. The judge reiterated the Bill of Rights, and some of our most foundational principles of freedom, the freedom of expression, free speech. And when you have a policy as vicious as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” that abridges that free speech and says “You cannot say the truth to your commander or to your best friends. You cannot say three words, ‘I am gay,'” or “You are not allowed to express your commitment to your lover or your partner by saying three words ‘I love you'” – that’s absolutely against not only the Constitution, but against America. It’s against integrity, it’s against our American values – BREWER: She says it actually bars people from enjoying intimate conduct, and bars them from speaking about their loved ones while serving in uniform, and it bans them from including information in a personal communication that could reveal their homosexuality. If you’re deployed, you’re away from your support system, that’s a severe impediment to dealing effectively, to operating effectively in our nation’s armed forces. But she says she’s not going to issue a final ruling for two more weeks. What should happen right now from our nation’s leaders, not just this judge? CHOI: Well you’re absolutely right. For the soldiers not only that are in combat, but the ones that come back home and have to deal with so many issues of Post Traumatic Stress or depression or even suicide – which is skyrocketing in the military – I don’t see how our leaders can stand by and do nothing.  But in this case, if the President and his Justice Department do nothing, do not appeal, do not lift a finger that will waste any energy, waste any statements, or waste any money defending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” than what we might see is an absolute victory not only for gay veterans, but for our whole military. We don’t have to fire people for being honest anymore, and we can bolster and reiterate not only our Bill of Rights in our Constitution, but our American value of love. BREWER: Dan, I appreciate it. I stand with you. And I do think that justice delayed is justice denied, and I hope to see this policy end soon.

Fox News Military Analyst Comes Out As Birther

August's slow-news period would have seemed to me to be a prime period for some sort of Birther flare-up, but just past the deadline comes the news that Lieutenant General Thomas McInerney has signed an affidavit in support of Lt. Col. Terry Lakin. Lakin — a Birther cause-celebre — is facing a court martial after refusing to report for deployment to Afghanistan because he doesn't believe President Barack Obama is eligible to be President of the United States. It's one of the more unfortunate instances of Birther Kool-Aid overdose. And now, McInerney has jumped aboard. Dave Weigel reports that McInerney is — or at least was — “a serious person”: “He's a West Point graduate who ran the Alaskan air command during the Exxon Valdez disaster.” Of course, he also contributes to Fox News as a military analyst. Per Media Matters: McInerney has been interviewed on Fox News at least four times in the last year, most recently on the August 29 edition of Fox News' America's News HQ. During that time, he has appeared in taped reports on five editions of Fox News' premiere “news” program, Special Report.* He has also written occasional columns for FoxNews.com's Fox Forum. Between January 1, 2002, and May 13, 2008, McInerney made 144 Fox News appearances. McInerney's support for Lakin's cause does seem to be a bit at odds with his written contributions to Fox Forum. That is not to say he's not critical of Obama — he is a fierce one. But none of his work belies any fascination with the Birther fetish. Here, he seems to address Obama as the legitimate leader of the country. He does the same in his most recent offering — though it's pretty confusing piece, with grave misunderstandings about counterinsurgency strategy, that seems to argue that Obama should just fire everyone involved in the war effort and then, maybe, resign himself. Nevertheless, McInerney is a full-blown Birther fanatic, now. Here's his statement: For the foregoing reasons, it is my opinion that LTC Lakin's request for discovery relating to the President's birth record in Hawaii is absolutely essential to determining not merely his guilt or innocence but to reassuring all military personnel once and for all for this President whether his service as Commander in Chief is Constitutionally proper. He is the one single person in the Chain of Command that the Constitution demands proof of natural born citizenship. This determination is fundamental to our Republic, where civilian control over the military is the rule. According to the Constitution, the Commander is Chief must now, in the face of serious — and widely-held — concerns that he is ineligible, either voluntarily establish his eligibility by authorizing release of his birth records or this court must authorize their discovery. The invasion of his privacy is utterly trivial compared to the issues at stake here. Our military MUST have confidence their Commander in Chief lawfully holds his office and absent which confidence grievous consequences may ensue. added by: TimALoftis

Katie Couric: ‘Obama Has Enough Stress to Last a Lifetime’

Give the guy a break, he deserves it. That was Katie Couric’s message a week ago in her Notebook blog entry about President Obama’s 49th birthday (emphasis mine): The job has aged him, as it did his predecessors. Dr. Michael Roizen at the Cleveland Clinic stated constant stress can age the Commander in Chief two years for every one year in office. So I guess that means he’s really turning 50. President Obama has enough stress to last a lifetime … and as he blows out his birthday candles, war, recession and a giant oil spill won’t magically disappear. But I hope he’s able to take a break tonight, forget his troubles and spend time doing something he loves. But as Paul Bedard of USNews.com noted in an August 11 blog Washington Whispers blog post, Obama has not exactly been lacking in the R&R department : There they go again. For the fifth time since July, the first family has set plans to board Air Force One for a frilly vacation , a 10-day return trip to exclusive Martha’s Vineyard where they are expected to stay at the 28-acre oceanfront Blue Heron Farm that rents for up to $50,000 a week. But first the Obamas will be traveling to the Gulf Coast of Florida for a mini-vacation as a way to encourage other vacationing Americans to head to the beaches that have been shunned by tourists worried about oil-slicked sands due to the Gulf oil spill. They are expected to travel to Florida this weekend, return to Washington for a few days then it’s off to the Massachusetts island August 19. For a recap, here is this year’s Obama Travelogue: -Full family Christmas and New Years in Hawaii . -March spring break-first lady Michelle Obama, mom Marian Robinson, and both daughters hit Broadway. -Memorial Day in Chicago with the family. -Three days in July in Maine, primarily tony Bar Harbor. -Last week, the president traveled to Chicago for a birthday party with Oprah and others. -Michelle and Sasha spent much of last week on Spain’s southern coast, ending it with a trip to Majorca to meet the king and queen of Spain. -Florida this weekend for a night on the Gulf Coast. -August 19-29 on Martha’s Vineyard. Of course, every president faces unimaginable stress from the weight of responsibility from the job, but the media never ceased to remind us of how many days President Bush spent in the summer telecommuting to work from his Crawford, Texas, ranch.  Yet when it comes to President Obama and his penchant to jet off on vacation every few weeks, Couric and company tell us Obama deserves a break, even as he’s taken care to do that plenty of times already.
