Kanye West Treats Chicago High Schools To Private Concerts

Lupe Fiasco and Common joined Yeezy in rewarding public school students for their achievements this year. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West and Common perform at the Kanye West Foundation’s 3rd annual Stay in School event on June 8 Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ Getty Images Kanye West gave the students at three Chicago public schools serious incentive to keep up their grades and make it to school: the promise of a private concert. On Tuesday, the rapper’s 33rd birthday, he made good on that pledge with the Kanye West Foundation’s third annual Stay in School event, which found him visiting three different hometown high schools to perform a mini-concert along with pals Lupe Fiasco and Common , according to the Chicago Tribune. With the exception of a recent club appearance in Manhattan , West has been keeping a low profile for the past eight months. But he stepped back in the spotlight to reward the kids at Farragut Career Academy, John Marshall Metropolitan and Percy L. Julian High School for posting the highest gains in grades, behavior and performance among seven participating schools. In previous years, the concerts took place in area venues, but this year West and his friends played a six-song set at each school. Fiasco kicked the shows off with his hit “Superstar,” followed by Common’s “Universal Mind Control,” according to the paper. “We want to congratulate you on the incredible job you’ve done in school,” said Common. “Whatever you do, be the best at it.” Then it was Kanye’s turn to take the stage. He performed “Run This Town,” “Good Life,” the new song “Power” (which TV cameras were not allowed to record) and “Touch the Sky.” West didn’t say much to the crowd during the Farragut show, leaving most of the stage banter to Common and Fiasco, though that show did end with the more than 1,600 students — all wearing white Kanye West Foundation T-shirts — singing “Happy Birthday” to the rapper. Would the promise of a Kanye West concert get you to improve your grades? Discuss it in the comments. Related Artists Kanye West Lupe Fiasco Common

Shocking New Report: The CIA Performed Human Experiments on Prisoners Under Bush

Over the last year there have been an increasing number of accounts suggesting that, along with the CIA's “enhanced interrogation” torture program, there was a related program experimenting with and researching the application of the torture. For example, in the seven paragraphs released by a British court summarizing observations by British counterintelligence agents of the treatment of Binyan Mohamed by the CIA, the first two of these paragraphs these paragraphs stated: It was reported that a new series of interviews was conducted by the United States authorities prior to 17 May 2002 as part of a new strategy designed by an expert interviewer…. BM had been intentionally subjected to continuous sleep deprivation. The effects of the sleep deprivation were carefully observed. [emphasis added] The suggestion was that a new strategy was being tested and the results carefully examined. Several detainees have provided similar accounts, expressing their belief that their interrogations were being carefully studied, apparently so that the techniques could be modified based on the results. Such research would violate established laws and ethical rules governing research. Since Nazi doctors who experimented upon prisoners in the concentration camps were put on trial at Nuremberg, the U.S. and other countries have moved toward a high ethical standard for research on people. All but the most innocuous research requires the informed consent of those studied. Further, all research on people is subject to review by independent research ethics committees, known as Institutional Review Boards or IRBs. In the U.S., there was a major push toward more stringent research ethics when the existence of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study was publicly revealed in the early 1970s. In that study nearly 400 poor rural African-American men were denied existing treatment for their syphilis, and indeed, were never told they had syphilis by participating doctors. The study by the U.S. Public Health Service was intended to continue until the last of these men died of syphilis. When the study became public the resulting outcry helped cement evolving ethical standards mandating informed consent for any research with even a possibility of causing harm. These rules were codified in what has become known as the Common Rule, which applies to nearly all federally-funded research, including all research by the CIA. Experiments in Torture A new report of which I am a coauthor, Experiments in Torture: Evidence of Human Subject Research and Experimentation in the “Enhanced” Interrogation Program, just released by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) confirms previous suspicions and provides the first strong evidence that the CIA was indeed engaged in illegal and unethical research on detainees in its custody. The report, the result of six months of detailed work, analyzes now-public documents, including the “torture memos” from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel and the CIA's Inspector General Report and the accompanying CIA Office of Medical Services (OMS) guidelines for monitoring of detainees. The report points to several instances where medical personnel — physicians and psychologists — monitored the detailed administration of torture techniques and the effects upon those being abused. The resultant knowledge was then used both as a legal rationale for the use of the techniques and to refine these abusive techniques, allegedly in order to make them safer. For example, the OMS guidelines contain this note emphasizing how important it is “that every application of the waterboard be thoroughly documented” by medical personnel, and clarifying the nature of this documentation: “how long each application (and the entire procedure) lasted, how much water was applied (realizing that much splashes off), how exactly the water was applied, if a seal was achieved, if the naso- or oropharynx was filled, what sort of volume was expelled, how long was the break between applications, and how the subject looked between each treatment.” This type of documentation was not part of routine medical care as it was not being done in the interests of the person being waterboarded. Rather, the OMS made clear that this was being done “[i]n order to best inform future medical judgments and recommendations” [regarding how to torture people.] The purpose of this systematic monitoring was to modify how these techniques were implemented, that is, to develop generalizable knowledge to be utilized in the future. Queen Latifah Says Common Brought ‘Dynamics’ To ‘Just Wright’

‘I could no longer walk out onto a set and look at a bunch of white males,’ Queen says of her producer role. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: MTV News “Just Wright,” which opened Friday (May 14), is Queen Latifah’s fifth film as a producer. The hip-hop icon says that she tries to make each project reflect her reality — and that’s how Common ended up cast in his first lead role . “Every time that I do a movie, when I get into a position of power and my voice actually meant something, I realized that I could no longer walk out onto a set and look at a bunch of white males,” she told MTV News. “That was just no longer acceptable. I need to see dynamics. I needed to see what I just came out of from walking off the street when I came in here. Where are the women? Where are the people of color? I need to see that in front of me, ’cause I just don’t feel like it’s right.” According to Latifah, Common was the perfect candidate for the role, but the witty MC still had to prove his mettle with the production team. “There’s a difference, man,” Common said about being a leading man. ” ‘Cause I remember, specifically, my first [role] doing ‘Smokin’ Aces,’ I got there at, like, 6 in the morning — I was sitting in the trailer, and I wasn’t thinking about listening to music, ’cause I wanted to stay focused. I was just sitting there focused, and then they called lunch at 12, and I thought, ‘Dang, they ain’t doing the scene yet?’ And then we went back, and then it was 5 o’clock, and they told me they didn’t need me for the day, and I’d been zoning in the whole time! So I’m getting changed, and 20 minutes later they come back, ‘Hurry up, get into the scene.’ That let me know it’s a roller coaster in this thing, and you just got to be prepared. But as a leading man, you’re there, boom, you gotta be working every day.” Latifah said she hopes to continue promoting untapped talent to move up the ladder in Tinsel Town. “If I’m here, if I made it here and I don’t do my part to make sure that the set is more dynamic,” she said, “and I don’t mean hire unqualified people, but go find some qualified people in these areas and make sure when I look up I’m looking at a little bit more of a rainbow around here. ‘Cause that makes me feel better. It makes me feel blessed to be in a position to do it.” Are you excited to see Common star in “Just Wright” with Queen Latifah? Let us know in the comments! Audrina Patridge and her Boyfriend Look Like Clowns of the Day

I guess the common thread that brings these two lovers together and keeps these two lovers together is that they both understand what it’s like to be second rate celebrities who slowly fade into obscurity no matter how ridiculous their hair is. Sure, Audrina is still on TV and still relevant as far as she’s concerned because she’s still on TV, but that’s all coming to an end. I know there are rumors about her getting her own spinoff show, but that won’t last, if anything that’s just the nail in the coffin of her bullshit celebrity….and I guess she’s hoping that when she slowly falls from her peak, she can rely on this clown Ryan Cabrera’s cock being there to land on, since he’s got little else goin on…but I like to think he’s just moving in on this now cuz he figures the last year will be the one everyone is watching and this may just be his stepping stone to get back to where he left things off back when he was fake-dating Ashlee Simpson….while real celebrities just ignore him… Here are the pics of these idiots looking ridiculous. Pulling Out Is The Same As A Condom
