‘X Factor’ Judges Leave Stacy Francis ‘Very Confused’

‘For [Simon Cowell] to just beat me up like that, I don’t understand,’ singer tells MTV News after Wednesday night’s episode. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Stacy Francis performs on “The X Factor” Photo: FOX It seems that every reality-show singing competition has to have one polarizing contestant who makes headlines every week for something. “X Factor” appears to have found its lightning rod in former professional singer Stacy Francis, who ripped it up with judge Simon Cowell on Wednesday night’s rock-themed performance episode. The 42-year-old Brooklyn native and single mother, who is being coached by Nicole Scherzinger, was lambasted by Cowell for her sleepy rendition of Meat Loaf’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” which he said was “the sort of thing I would expect someone to sing at the Hilton Hotel with people turning their backs, eating peanuts.” MTV News spoke to Francis backstage after the show, and she admitted that Cowell’s slings and arrows bewildered her. “I just want a fair judgment, and I don’t feel like it was fair,” she said. “I feel like because I’m not in Simon’s category, he beats me up every week. I don’t know if I can really take on what he says as an artist and really say, ‘OK, how can I make this better?’ ” On a show where the judges usually save their harshest fire for each other, Cowell went all in on Francis, saying, “I thought the song was a horrible choice. I like rocks; that was a pebble.” Indeed, Francis, standing at a feather-covered mic stand while wearing leather gloves and a sparkly silver dress, emoted her way through the lesser-known Loaf tune while accompanied by a grand piano, mirror-ball effects on the giant onstage videos, lots of ground fog and a wind machine. She took issue with Cowell’s criticism that the song was too cabaret, noting that the audience seemed to love it. “For him to just beat me up like that, I don’t understand; I don’t get it,” she said. “I sang a Meat Loaf song, which is a rock song, and he said he didn’t love it. Melanie Amaro sang an R.E.M. song, and he loved it. It was the same tempo … I don’t know, I was very confused about it.” Francis said it seems to her that the other females in the competition have an advantage because they are in Cowell’s category and he doesn’t give them as much grief. “My first audition, he told me he loved me and he loved my voice and he loved everything,” she said. “All of a sudden, I’m the worst thing in the competition. I don’t understand it. That’s very confusing, and I think it’s very unfair.” As for judge Paula Abdul’s comments about some of Francis’ vocals being flat, the onetime member of the group Ex-Girlfriend said, if anything, her vocals sometimes go sharp because she pushes too hard, but rarely flat. “I don’t think that I ever go flat, so that’s weird,” she said. “To me, [Abdul] has one group in the competition that’s left so she would love to see any other contestant [leave] except her only one. I don’t know if I’m getting a fair evaluation as an artist or if it’s just the bickering amongst the judges because they wanna win.” Share your review of Stacy Francis’ performance in the comments below! By James Dinh Ryan Dunn Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage As promised, the life of late “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn will be celebrated in a one-hour MTV special , airing Monday, November 28, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, the network announced Thursday (November 17). The tribute to the stuntman, who died at age 34 in a Pennsylvania car crash in June, will give viewers an intimate look into Ryan’s life, from his early years in Ohio, to his antics with the Jackass crew, to his untimely death. Among the many close friends who will appear in the special are Johnny Knoxville, Rob Dyrdek, Wee Man, Chris Pontius, Jeff Tremaine and Bam Margera. Dunn’s fans will be able to catch never-before-seen footage of the star from his time on “Viva la Bam,” “Jackass” and much more. While Knoxville admitted that Dunn’s death is still “a surreal thing to undertake,” he explained his reasons for serving as one of the special’s executive producers, alongside Jeff Tremaine, Spike Jonze and Derek Freda. “I still can’t believe he’s gone but we wouldn’t trust anyone else with this, so we are doing the best we can for Ryan, his family, friends, and everyone who loved him,” Knoxville said in a statement. Van Toffler, president of Viacom’s Music Group, also shared his thoughts on the memorial special: “Weaving together footage of Ryan for this special reminds us all of what a special friend he was to so many. He is sorely missed by his MTV family and fans, but his mischievous, caring spirit lives on.” Before the tribute kicks off, MTV will air three episodes of the Dyrdek-hosted “Ridiculousness,” beginning at 9 p.m. After encore episodes featuring Knoxville and Tremaine, fans will be treated to a brand-new episode of the series, which features one of Dunn’s final television appearances. In the episode, the star highlights some of the Internet’s most entertaining viral videos with the help of Rob and friends Chanel and Sterling “Steelo” Brim. This isn’t the first time friends and family have come together to remember Dunn’s legacy . Shortly after his death, “Jackass” co-star Rick Kosick cut together a five-and-a-half-minute montage of the star’s most memorable moments in a clever yet emotional video set to Roger Alan Wade’s “The Light Outlives the Star.” Don’t miss the “Ryan Dunn Tribute Special,” airing Monday, November 28, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. ‘X Factor’ Loses Stacy Francis As Astro Loses His Cool

‘I don’t want to perform for people who don’t want me here,’ mini-MC says after landing in the bottom two. By Adam Graham Stacy Francis on “X Factor” Photo: FOX Stacy Francis — the 42-year-old diva who once pleaded to Simon Cowell, “I don’t want to die with this music in me!” — was eliminated from “The X Factor” Thursday night (November 17). But the bigger story was 15-year-old hip-hop dynamo Astro , who found himself in the bottom two with Francis and was none too pleased with his fate. Asked to sing for his life in front of the judges, Astro nonchalantly strolled onto the stage and announced, “I really don’t wanna perform. I feel like it’s unnecessary.” He turned to his mentor, L.A. Reid: “But I’mma leave it up to you. You’re my mentor. Do you think I should perform?” Reid told Astro he had come a long way in the competition and that he should perform. Astro turned back and proceeded to give a halfhearted, visibly jaded performance of a song in which he talked about his experiences on the show. Francis, for her song, belted out “Amazing Grace.” When it came time for the judges to make their decision, Astro was scolded for his attitude by the panel, with Reid telling him, “You acted a little bit like a quitter, and it upset me.” But Cowell was the hardest on the Brooklyn MC — whom Rihanna once compared to “a mini J. Cole” — telling him, “I don’t like your attitude right now.” “Look at me, and think about your mum watching the show,” Cowell said to him. “Because you are showing disrespect to your mom. You are showing disrespect to the audience at home, and I don’t like people with this attitude.” Astro retorted, “No disrespect to you or this show, but I just feel like if you’re going to put me in the bottom two, I don’t want to perform for people who don’t want me here, you know what I’m saying? That’s it.” By this time, Astro was being showered with boos from the audience, and a tear that had welled up in his eye began to stream down his face. Cowell asked if he’d take the same attitude if put in the position again, and Astro apologized, telling him, “Honestly, man, it’s cool.” With the audience chanting, “Stacy! Stacy!” Cowell cast his deciding vote. “I really don’t want to do this,” he said, voting for Astro to stay, saying he thinks he had a better chance of winning the show and ultimately sending Francis packing with a 3-1 vote in favor of her ouster. (Nicole Scherzinger, Francis’ mentor, was the sole vote for her to remain.) Francis thanked the judges for her time on the show and took responsibility for her so-so rendition of Meat Loaf’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” the night prior, which was slammed by Cowell. “I don’t believe I did great last night. I go with that, and I have to suck up my pride and take responsibility for the performance I gave,” Francis said. “I just want to thank Simon Cowell for giving me a chance, because I’m 42 years old, and he allowed me to sing for the world week to week.” Earlier in the night, Paula Abdul — who had already seen two of her groups get kicked off the show — caught a break when she learned her sole remaining group in the competition, Lakoda Rayne, was voted through to next week. Upon hearing the news, Cowell looked as though William Hung just won a Grammy, while Abdul proudly crowed, “I told you so, I told you so!” During the commercial break following the announcement, Cowell tweeted, “How the hell did that happen?” The episode also featured a performance from Rihanna, who showcased her current Billboard chart-topping single “We Found Love.” While it was presented as live, the performance was taped following Wednesday’s episode. The top 10 contestants opened the show with a group rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” celebrating the week’s rock and roll theme . Ricki Lake Tangos to Dancing With the Stars Top Spot

Performing last in each portion Monday night, Ricki and Derek did their best to quash the competition on Dancing With the Stars . Each time, they were successful. Their samba was fun and fabulous, with Bruno calling it “sizzling hot, bright and brilliant from beginning to end.” The others agreed. Three perfect 10s for 30. Then it was on to the Argentine tango, a smooth, graceful effort that seamlessly meshed footwork with emotion and landed them just a point shy of perfection. Rob Kardashian: Dancing With the Stars’ Dark Horse

Rob Kardashian is proving the Dancing With the Stars doubters wrong. He got a bad rap at the beginning of the season for being aloof and just doing the show because mom Kris Jenner made him. But he has improved dramatically. Kicking off Monday night’s episode with an awesome quickstep, Rob proved he’s a dark horse in the competition, an under-the-radar but serious contender. Watch the routine that earned Rob and Cheryl Burke all nines below: Rob Kardashian on Dancing With the Stars (Week 8 – Quickstep) He finished with the fourth highest total out of five dancers, but Rob has a big cushion over Nancy Grace, so he should be in the clear on tonight’s results show. Beyond that, though, it may come down to Rob and Cheryl or Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Hope Solo for the final spot in the 13th season’s three-team finale. Rob scored a 24 on his second, instant jive dance. Watch it below: Rob Kardashian on Dancing With the Stars (Week 8 – Jive)

‘Glee’-Cap: Newbie Rory Brings ‘Pot O’ Gold’

Damian McGinty stops by to critique our Gleek’s Irish folk song. By Jim Cantiello Damian McGinty and Heather Morris in “Glee” Photo: FOX In Tuesday night’s “Pot O’ Gold” episode of “Glee,” McKinley High welcomed a new foreign exchange student, Rory (Damian McGinty), which inspired MTV News’ resident Gleek to write an Irish folk song in his honor. The new guy was great, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” was a jolt of excitement, but in the end, did the oddball custody battle, distracting Congressional race and eyebrow-raising Puck/Shelby romance suggest that the third season might be hitting the same uneven patches that plagued season two? At the very least, viewers had next week’s steamy promo to drool over. Sing along to our latest musical “Glee”-cap! Family, friends and fellow Gleeks Come gather ’round for a story About a kind young Irish lad Who goes by the name of Rory He doesn’t fit in Despite being Under Finn’s wing But, boy, can he sing He’s good for a wish Wants Brittany to kiss His place of bliss Instead, he’s dismissed Mercedes recruits Santana the brute Who threatens the cute New Irish suit He ain’t so keen On being green And Brittany careens Into Shelby’s routines [Damian enters, coughs. The music stops] Damian : “Jim, that’s the worst Irish accent I’ve ever heard. It’s offensively bad. You know the Lucky Charms guy? It’s even worse than that.” Jim : “Um. I … Sorry.” Damian : “Thanks for making me feel welcome, you jerk.” Jim : “Say hi to Klaine for me!” [The song resumes.] How could I go this far without Singing about that promo For next week’s epic episode In which my favorite homos Finally do the deed, my friends? I want it NOW, not later But I could use these seven days To buy a defibrillator Raise your hand if you give a f— About Quinn or Shelby or Puck And keep it raised if you still care When Sue makes jokes about Schuester’s hair Yes, it’s great that Burt went and saved The school play from being extinct But the very last thing that “Glee” needs Is a political plotline that stinks Thank God for Klaine For keeping me sane Did you see when he grabbed his hip? I love that what keeps this show afloat Is actually a “ship” “Last Friday Night” Was oh so right A glorious sight Made me high as a kite Even though that Darren Was the one to sing Despite having been In Katy’s thing A stand-out scene You know what I mean The twirl was a dream Cute to the extreme Next week, our two boys Are gonna be poised To make some noise For us to enjoy [to the tune of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”] Next Tuesday night, Klaine goes all the way. ‘X Factor’: Rachel Crow Compared To Michael Jackson

It was a night full of high praise, with Astro, Josh Krajcik and Melanie Amaro all earning the judges’ approval as well. By Adam Graham Simon Cowell Photo: FOX There was no shortage of praise doled out by the judges on Wednesday’s (November 2) episode of “The X Factor,” with two performers hailed as budding superstars, one compared to a young Michael Jackson and a group praised as one of the world’s best bands. And those acts weren’t even considered the evening’s front-runners! Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s performances, and the compliments that followed: The Girls Following her rendition of the Eagles’ “Desperado,” Melanie Amaro was dubbed “the one to beat” in the competition by Cowell. Meanwhile, Rachel Crow’s take on “Walking on Sunshine” caused Scherzinger to compare the 13-year-old to Jackson 5-era Michael Jackson, and Drew — formerly known as Drew Ryniewicz — wowed the judges with her unorthodox take on Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” which prompted both L.A. Reid and Cowell to say the 14-year-old has the makings of a superstar. The Boys Chris Rene was surrounded by flames during his performance of the Carpenters’ “Superstar,” which Cowell said made it look like he was performing in hell. “That’s called fire, baby, ’cause he’s hot!” gushed mentor L.A. Reid. Elsewhere, pintsize rapper Astro’s blend of “Hip-Hop Hooray” and “Get Ur Freak On” — with original verses by the young MC — had Cowell praising his star quality and Scherzinger saying she wanted to take him to the club, while Marcus Canty’s mash-up of B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Bobby Brown’s “Every Little Step” had Paula Abdul calling him “a total performer.” The Groups The 10-member InTENsity took pieces of Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and blended them into one “fun, fun, fun” performance, according to Reid, who echoed the other judges’ sentiments about the group. Lakoda Rayne’s vocals — especially their harmonies — were celebrated following their performance of “Landslide,” though Cowell attacked their choice of wardrobe, saying their gowns made them look like they were attending the prom. And the Stereo Hogzz kicked off the evening with a steroid-enhanced version of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” that had Abdul calling them “fantastic” and had Cowell complimenting them by saying, “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now who are as good as you.” Over 30s Burrito maker Josh Krajcik took on Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” and Cowell said the stark ballad came off as a song that Krajcik wrote himself. Mentor Scherzinger put it another way: “I feel like a proud mom, but we’re, like, the same age, so that doesn’t work.” Stacy Francis, after attempting a pop song last week, took ’em to church with “Up to the Mountain,” which was called “magical” and “a shining moment” by Abdul and called one of the evening’s best by Cowell, who let her kiss him onstage. And 60-year-old LeRoy Bell got decent marks for singing Lonestar’s “I’m Already There,” though Reid criticized the song choice and Cowell said he felt Bell had a confidence problem. On this night, that was about as harsh as the criticism would get. One finalist will be sent home on Thursday’s one-hour live episode of “The X Factor.” It was also announced on Wednesday’s show that “The X Factor” will return next year for a second season. ‘X Factor’ Exclusive: Bieber Fever Hits Rehearsals

MTV News’ Jim Cantiello takes us backstage as the top 12 prepare to perform. By Jim Cantiello Justin Bieber Photo: FilmMagic MTV News’ own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering “The X Factor” rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report! Bieber Fever has hit the halls of “X Factor”! On Tuesday, when Justin Bieber was performing on neighboring production “Dancing With the Stars,” all the teenage “X Factor” ladies were on a mission to meet the Biebz. It seemed like a no-brainer to orchestrate a Drew/Justin meet-up — her audition was all about how obsessed she is with him — which sparked a smidge of jealousy from the other teen contestants. One even playfully griped overdramatically, “But I’m a bigger fan than she is!” All the backstage drama was for naught: Drew didn’t get to meet Bieber after all. Also spotted Tuesday: Senior “X Factor” producers whistling and catcalling at a shirtless Derek Hough, who was rehearsing his “Dancing” results-show routine in the CBS hallways. Derek was unfazed. Inside the house, Nicole Scherzinger was sitting in on the girls’ rehearsals, even though she’s mentoring the Over 30s. Was she scoping out the competition? Where was girls’ mentor Simon? Turns out, Cowell sat in for Nicole’s category, since she was overseas performing on the U.K. “X Factor” when her singers were booked to rehearse. Simon joked backstage: “Her Over 30s were relieved to have me.” As showtime approached, the expected last-minute wardrobe tweaks were in full effect. One group was spotted getting magic tape applied to their glamorous footwear to prevent slippage. (Am I evil for hoping that they fall on live TV anyway? I love a good spill.) Two weeks into the live shows, the contestants are still getting along swimmingly. They’re so comfortable with one another that one of the girls was able to have a pretend diva fit over being jealous about one contestant’s over-the-top set piece, and everyone could laugh about it. We’ll see if the chummy vibe continues as the competition heats up, especially now that the singers’ fates are in voters’ hands. Eek! And here’s a little tidbit: Keep your eyes peeled for one of the male contestants’ arms tonight. In his (little) free time, he ran to a local tattoo parlor for new ink! Happy viewing! You can catch Jim on the “X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show,” streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on TheXFactorUSA.com ! Related Artists Justin Bieber
