In response to Garage Magazine’s infamous “black woman” chair photo, a gay artist from Russia has created a flipped the script in even more NSFW fashion. The Russian editor-in-chief of Garage , Dasha Zhukova, came under fire for a wildly racist editorial photo showing herself sitting on a “black woman” chair . At least that’s what it looked like. The piece of furniture was made to look like a black woman with a belt around her waist and thighs and her legs up in the air. Zhukova did apologize for the “regrettable” choice of art, but also defended designer Bjarne Melgaard’s intent was a “commentary on gender and racial politics.” Some did not find the apology sufficient, however. Alexander Kargaltsev, a gay NYC-based photographer and gay activist, decided to stage his own response to the “outrageous and tasteless” portrait. The image of a naked black man seated on a naked white man, whose legs are folded up to create a “chair,” is even crazier than the original, which was his point. See the uncensored image after the jump … “I was forced to leave Russia because of the discrimination I experienced as a gay,” Kargaltsev told The Huffington Post in an email statement Friday. “I’m disappointed that the tradition of xenophobia is so strong in my home country that such an image of Ms. Zhukova can appear as if it is normal and unremarkable.” “Russian people do not seem to realize when people offend the principle of color, nationality, sexual orientation and so on,” Kargaltsev explained, adding: “My own composition reverses the visual injustice and offense perpetrated by that editorial and in a way restores the equality of genders, races, and sexual orientations.” “Sadly, I understand very well that my work will be seen by most Russians as provocative and inappropriate, while [her] repulsive image will hardly make anyone shake their head.” What do you think? Naya Rivera Covers Complex Magazine “Glee” cast member and current Big Sean honeybun Naya Rivera has got the goods and is showing them off for the latest issue of Complex Magazine. Naya recently did a classy but bangin’ photo shoot with Complex and sat down to talk it up about everything from struggling to fit in because of her mixed heritage, to what she thought of Big Sean before he became her boo-thang and more. Check out a few excerpts below: via Complex Magazine Despite being on TV as a kid, Naya confesses that she didn’t have classmates lining up to be her friend—much less asking for her autograph. “I wish I had more fun in high school,” she says. “I wasn’t allowed to hang out with the black kids because they thought I wasn’t black enough, which was a problem.” Naya’s dad, George, is Puerto Rican and her half-German, half-African-American mother was strict, religious, and didn’t let her go out much. “On Friday nights, me and my friend Madison would stand outside the liquor store and bribe older people walking by to buy us wine coolers to drink while we watched The Notebook,” says Naya. Naya’s prom date was a guy on the football team. “He started talking about how skinny I was,” she recalls. “All of his friends were like, ‘You need a thick girl.’ He was grinding on every other girl at the dance while I sat alone at the table, looking like a señorita.” “Then he said, ‘So are you coming to the hotel?’ And I was like, ‘No, my dad is picking me up. On top of that, you’re trying to have sex with me? How rude are you?’” she says. Whoever that guy was, he must be kicking himself right now. But Naya insists she’s not bitter. “Best believe I’ll be at that reunion though.” That guy is definitely somewhere crying in the car. I generally hate these HOT 100 lists, mainly because they are usually associated with shitty magazines and the results, or the listing, is all random shit that means nothing. It’s like they put 100 names in a hat and pick at radom to see where to slot them… But I do love Complex, and I’m not just saying that because they featured me in the magazine in 2007, back when I peaked. I am saying that because I believe they put thought into their list, and I understand why Rihanna came out on top, because let’s face it, it is an Urban magazine and who the fuck else could have really won…. Rihanna is top of her game, lookin’ fit as hell, being a total exhibitionist slut, and she’s in my top 10 too.. So good job Complex, for renewing my hope in magazine top 100 lists….
