About That Lost Sexual Hysteria Project For Julia Roberts

In David Cronenberg’s new film A Dangerous Method , Keira Knightley plays Sabina Spielrein, a young woman who at times lapses into fits of hysterics and at other times, comfortably discusses masturbation and the arousing aspects of her father’s beatings. Originally though, this complicated character (and the onscreen spankings she endures) were not intended for the Pirates of the Caribbean star — but for Julia Roberts, America’s Longest-Reigning Sweetheart.

REVIEW: Final Destination 5 Combines Wit and Morbid Excess, and Somehow It Works

In his 1998 article about the crash of ValuJet Flight 592 into the Florida Everglades, William Langwiesche explains the concept of the “normal accident.” When 105 people die, the public wants answers — a story to make sense of what happened and determine who is to blame. The piece’s ultimate point is that allowances must be made, particularly in a world with as many working parts as ours, for disasters that are not only unforeseen but unavoidable. Laying out the complicated sequence of events that led to an oxygen tank explosion in the plane’s cargo hold, Langwiesche arrives at the conclusion that it may be more dangerous to take extreme measures to avoid what amounts to a series of benign human oversights combined with circumstance than to accept that the universe will occasionally and very casually line up against you. It’s a beautifully wrought and supremely rational argument whose logic might be a source of comfort if it weren’t so horrifying.

‘Going The Distance’ Co-Stars Think Romance And Bromance Can Coexist

Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis share their philosophy on male friendships. By Kara Warner Jason Sudeikis Photo: MTV News As a rule, romantic comedies generally follow a pretty standard formula: Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl’s relationship is put to the test by brief bit of drama (overprotective potential in-laws, nosy friends, etc.), boy and girl live happily ever after. It’s typical and predictable, but also why we love rom-coms! The latest entrant into the beloved genre is this week’s “Going the Distance,” starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long as a new couple who try to make their relationship work while living on opposite coasts. The film also features the comedic stylings of Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”), who play a pair of buddies doing their best to keep their close friendship alive, while Long’s character tries to distance himself from his pals and make more time for his new romance. When MTV News caught up with the two funnymen at the film’s press day, we asked them to compare and contrast the complicated aspects of real-life guy friendship, a.k.a. bromance, and romance — and whether the two can exist at the same time. “Well, there’s a lot less sex in the bromance,” Day offered. “We’re bromancing each other, but we’re not bromancing each other in bed, so that’s different.” Sudeikis admitted that sometimes you need to put the bromance on the back burner. “At some point, you have to let your friend go and your romance will trump the bromance,” he said. “You have to let the little bird fly out of the nest.” “A romance and a bromance can happen at the same time — they’re not mutually exclusive,” Day added. “They can, they absolutely can. Sometimes people think that when the romance starts, the bromance ends, but that’s not true.” This comment prompted Sudeikis to theorize that it’s a bad sign if the guy friends in question have a problem with their friend’s new love interest. “If the bromance really has a negative reaction to the romance, it’s probably not a healthy romance,” he said. “There’s no reason a good romance can’t be perfectly bromantical,” Day added. “Yeah,” Sudeikis agreed. “Not all squares are rectangles.” “And not all rectangles are shapes,” Day said. There you have it, philosophies on love and bromance, courtesy of Sudeikis and Day. Oil Gusher Could be 100% Capped by Monday

(CBS/AP) The federal official leading the Gulf oil spill cleanup says a new containment cap and an additional ship collecting oil could effectively contain the spill as early as Monday. National Incident Commander Thad Allen said Friday that the work to replace a leaky containment cap on the well head with a tighter one will begin Saturday. At the same time, a ship connecting to a different part of leak is expected to come online Sunday. If all goes according to plan, the combination could collect all of the oil leaking from the seafloor. Workers at the site of BP's massive spill are set to begin the complicated cap-switching operation this weekend. But oil may flow unimpeded for several days during the process. Allen said Friday that undersea robots will begin removing a cap mounted over the jagged remnants of the well head Saturday. Special Section: Disaster in the Gulf They plan to put a new containment cap that will form a better seal. Then, up to four ships will begin collecting the oil and gas. The time from beginning the removal of the old cap to attaching the new cap will take several days. Work continues on what officials hope will be the ultimate solution: a pair of relief wells intercepting the leaking well far below the seafloor. BP said Thursday that the first of the relief wells could be done by the end of the month. And if that doesn't succeed, one backup being considered is transferring the crude to non-producing underwater wells that are miles away. BP would run the flow through pipelines across the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, Allen said. Allen on Thursday sent BP a letter demanding details about contingency plans in the event they have to proceed with the simultaneous maneuver or if the sealing cap installation fails, including due to severe weather. The oil company has 24 hours to respond. Thad Allen's July 8 Letter to BP There are currently two vessels siphoning oil from the gushing undersea well: the Discovery Enterprise, which captures an estimated 15,000 barrels of oil a day, and the Q-4000, which captures about 10,000 barrels a day. Crews are working to connect a third ship, the Helix Producer, which would help another 25,000 barrels daily. If everything works as planned, officials hope the total capture capacity could increase to 80,000 barrels daily with the sealing cap, reports CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller. added by: TimALoftis

Katherine Heigl Feels ‘Horrible’ For Missing ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Finale

‘I really miss that relationship,’ she tells MTV News of onscreen romance with Justin Chambers. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Katherine Heigl Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, Katherine Heigl’s departure from “Grey’s Anatomy” caused quite a stir. The rumor mill was rife with gossip regarding the actress’s diva-like demands on set, months before her departure (Heigl’s last appearance as Izzy was January 21). But now that Heigl has officially left the program to focus on being a mom to her adopted daughter, she has gone to great lengths to right any wrongs (i.e. the recent Entertainment Weekly cover story titled “I’m Sorry”). MTV News recently caught up with the actress (while chatting about her upcoming romantic comedy “Killers”) and discovered that the 31-year-old has nothing but warm feelings for her onetime castmates. And because Heigl had not yet seen the complicated medical drama’s season finale, our own Josh Horowitz attempted — via a “creative interpretation” courtesy of Wikipedia — to summarize the detailed plot and bring the actress up to speed so she could comment. Midway through Josh’s delivery of the details, Heigl interrupted when he mentioned that a main character was pregnant. “I’m sorry, wait,” Heigl said and held up a hand to stop the recap for a moment. “A pregnant who? Meredith is pregnant?” she said, totally surprised. “You’ve made me feel horrible [for not watching yet]. “I’m going to have to watch this now. I have to see [Alex] call for [Izzy] and her never come. … I really miss that relationship,” Heigl said of her former onscreen romance with Alex (played by Justin Chambers). “Justin Chambers is one of the most amazing men and certainly a spectacular actor. I feel oddly attached to him and the character and my character being together. It just seems what’s supposed to be, but you can’t have it all.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Killers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Google Unblocks China Search

After months of speculation over when–and if–Google would leave China, it appears Google has finally made a move: the search engine has stopped censoring its search results, seems to have shut down its mainland search engine, and is now redirecting Chinese searches through its Hong Kong server. “Google's China domain, Google.cn now re-directs to Google.com.hk. The switch means Google is no longer censoring search results for its Chinese visitors. Whether these Chinese visitors can actually access Google.com.hk is another matter.” reports Business Insider. Mashable and TechCrunch are also reporting that Google has shut down its China search site. Google has posted a blog regarding its approach in China. Google explains, “So earlier today we stopped censoring our search services–Google Search, Google News, and Google Images–on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk. Due to the increased load on our Hong Kong servers and the complicated nature of these changes, users may see some slowdown in service or find some products temporarily inaccessible as we switch everything over.” Google states that the decision to halt censoring search results and redirect users to Google.com.hk is linked to the hacking that took place earlier this year: 'We also made clear that these attacks and the surveillance they uncovered—combined with attempts over the last year to further limit free speech on the web in China including the persistent blocking of websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google Docs and Blogger—had led us to conclude that we could no longer continue censoring our results on Google.cn,' Google writes. added by: UrbanGypsy
