Chris Matthews – ‘Obama is Almost Perfect’; Joan Walsh – ‘He’s the American Dream’

Chris Matthews almost got another tingle up his leg on national television Tuesday talking about how wonderful Barack Obama is. So did Salon’s Joan Walsh, In the opening segment of “Hardball,” the host and his perilously liberal guests concluded by trying to figure out why conservatives don’t like the current White House resident. In the end, and sadly predictable, the conclusion was the color of Obama’s skin. But before that, the sycophantic praise and exultation for the object of their affection was literally breathless (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: It’s about being an American, and the wonderful thing about this country is you can grow up to be basically what, you know, it’s a Great Gatbsy country, you can actually create your own identity and become a person. This guy Barack Obama, not to get too basic about it, did everything right. JOAN WALSH, SALON: Yes. MATTHEWS: He studied hard in school. He obeyed the law. He raised a family. He took care of his family. He was an excellent student. He was on the Harvard Law Review. He did everything. He went through the democratic process. He didn’t go out and make a lot of money on Wall Street. He gave himself to his community. This guy is almost pluperfect and they don’t like him. WALSH: He is the American dream. He lived it, he embodies it, and somehow he did something wrong, I don’t know what it is, but it is a little to do with the color of his skin. MATTHEWS: He didn’t show up at Glenn Beck’s House of Love, or whatever it is. BOB SHRUM: They might have made him sit in the back row. Did you hear Matthews almost panting when Walsh called Obama the American dream? Makes you wonder if studio assistants had to come in and give him a sponge-bath during the commercial break.

Time’s Klein: ‘Nativist Electoral Politics’ Behind Opposition to Ground Zero Mosque

In a Swampland blog post this morning entitled, “Something I Didn’t Know,” Time magazine’s Joe Klein pointed to a New York Times article that noted the existence of two mosques “already within several blocks of the proposed [Islamic] center.” But while other folks might draw the conclusion that building an additional mosque just blocks from Ground Zero is a needless exercise in dividing New Yorkers over a highly sensitive matter, Klein ran in the exact opposite direction, suggesting that logical consistency would compel mosque opponent Newt Gingrich to want to “close those suckers down”? “[T]his is further evidence of the true nature of this squabble: a particularly sleazy form of Nativist electoral politics,” Klein insisted. [click here for a related post by Brent Baker] But the issue has never been any and every mosque on the island of Manhattan, just the Cordoba House/Park 51 project and the imam spearheading the effort to build it, Faisal Abdul Rauf. Klein surely knows this yet simply refuses to acknowledge it because of his desire to play political hack rather than mere opinion journalist. After all, it’s hard to fault folks for opposing Rauf’s project when the imam reportedly said just weeks after 9/11 that the United States was an “accessory” to the attacks . More recently, the imam couldn’t bring himself to agree with the U.S. State Department that Hamas — a group committed to the destruction of U.S. ally Israel — is a terrorist organization. From the June 19 New York Post: Asked if he agreed with the State Department’s assessment, Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf told WABC radio, “Look, I’m not a politician. “The issue of terrorism is a very complex question,” he told interviewer Aaron Klein. “There was an attempt in the ’90s to have the UN define what terrorism is and say who was a terrorist. There was no ability to get agreement on that.” Asked again for his opinion on Hamas, an exasperated Rauf wouldn’t budge. “I am a peace builder. I will not allow anybody to put me in a position where I am seen by any party in the world as an adversary or as an enemy,” Rauf said, insisting that he wants to see peace in Israel between Jews and Arabs.

Behar: Liberal Opinions Come from Being Smart; Conservatives Closed-Minded

It’s patently obvious HLN host Joy Behar has a disdain for the conservative point of view. But is it because she is ideologically liberal, or perhaps does she just think it is “cooler” to be liberal?  On CBS’s July 11 “Sunday Morning,” CBS correspondent and sometime fill-in “Evening News” anchor Russ Mitchell interviewed the HLN host of “The Joy Behar Show.” He asked her about views and where this view came from. “Her unabashed liberal opinions often lead to some heated debates with her ‘View’ co-hosts … especially with the politically conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck,” Mitchell said. “Where did this liberal streak come from?” Turns out, it isn’t because of a particular issue or set of reasons she is a self-proclaimed liberal, but because Behar suggests there’s a higher intellect if you’re a liberal. “It comes from being smart,” Behar said. And Behar has paraded this “smartness” on “The View” and her HLN show. She has attacked prayer as a substitute for thinking , accused former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin of intentionally making her children media targets and exhibited irrational hatred for Rep Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. , not unlike most of those “smart” people on the left that seem to think a backbencher congresswoman from Minnesota is a threat to civil society . Mitchell reacted to Behar’s response by asking what her “The View” co-host would have to say about her conclusion. Behar response: Conservatives are just closed-minded.

Steve Zahn Plays ‘My Favorite Scene’ With Movieline

Earlier this month, Steve Zahn rang Movieline from his Kentucky farm to discuss Treme , HBO’ s ensemble drama about post-Katrina New Orleans. As his character, Davis McAlary — a charismatic disc jockey, amateur politician, and advanced stoner — grows frustrated with the Big Easy’s gradual recovery from disaster, so too have some Treme viewers grown frustrated with David Simon’s sprawling series. Hopefully, this Sunday’s finale will remind audiences why they enjoyed the series when it first premiered in April, and to celebrate the conclusion of his freshman year at HBO, Steve Zahn joined us for a round of the age-old Movieline classic, My Favorite Scene.

Sylvester Stallone Is ’99 Percent’ Sure ‘Rambo’ Franchise Is Done

‘That really was the legitimate finale,’ star says of 2008’s ‘Rambo.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sylvester Stallone Photo: Getty Images John Rambo has escaped death too many times to count. He’s survived bloody assaults from Vietnamese, Russian and Burmese soldiers, plus all manner of aggression from nefarious local law enforcement. Shoot, the guy healed his own bullet wound with nothing but a knife, a flame and some booze. So who’s to say that after four movies Rambo is done, never to return to the big screen with a truck-mounted .50-caliber machine gun blazing? Well, Sylvester Stallone, who burst our pie-in-the-spy “Rambo” dreams at the Spike Guys Choice Awards this past weekend. “I think so,” he said when MTV News asked if we’d seen the last of “Rambo.” That means the rumored plans for “Rambo V: The Savage Hunt” will likely never become a reality. Word was that the film would feature Rambo battling human traffickers and drug lords to save a girl kidnapped near the U.S.-Mexico border. Stallone was said to be gearing up both to direct and star in the flick, which would begin production in this spring. But by May, Stallone started backpedaling from not only that timeline but the stance that another “Rambo” was even necessary. Thus it seems like the conclusion of 2008’s “Rambo” — when the headband-wearing badass leaves Southeast Asia and is seen presumably returning to his family home in the U.S. — probably represents the final image in Rambo’s theatrical arc. And Sly is fine with that. “When he walked home, looked down the road, then looked straight ahead at the ranch, that really was the legitimate finale,” Stallone said. Yet he was reluctant to completely seal Rambo’s big-screen coffin. “Could anything happen?” Stallone said. “I’m 99 percent sure no. But …” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Related Artists Sylvester Stallone
