Go Be Kind Organization Helps Raise $40K For Homeless Single Father A random act of kindness can help the change the world by just helping one person at a time . According Fox 31 Denver a homeless single father had his entire life changed for the better after one stranger decided to #gobekind… Shortly after James Moss moved to Denver with his son Zhi last month, he was interviewed by Leon Logothetis, a writer, motivational speaker and philanthropist, who is on a tour to spread kindness. Moss left New York after a friend offered a him a place to stay and a job opportunity, but before he landed the offer fell through. “It seemed like everything I was trying to do was falling apart,” Moss said. Moss was looking for a shelter for he and his son, when Logothetis approached him with cameras and began asking him about kindness. Moss began talking about his homelessness. “I never expected it to be like this, but it’s like this. I’ve had nothing but good help along the way,” Moss said in the video, which is now posted to YouTube. The short encounter soon went viral around the world and hundreds of people helped raised thousands for the homeless father and his adorable son… That was just the beginning of the kindness, a woman who saw the video created a GoFundMe.com page for Moss. The campaign has a website to promote Logothetis’ tour stops and how people can help in their communities. “Phenomenal. Unbelievable,” Moss said. “It took off. I was like, ‘Are you serious?’” In four days, the page had already raised more than $39,000. “Just get me a car and a camper, you know what I mean?” Moss said with a laugh. “That’s what I’m trying to save some money up to get.” Though he’s still waiting to spend the money, James has already moved out of the shelter thanks to the kindness of yet another stranger. Five Brilliant Black Scholars Elected To The National Academy Of Medicine The National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as the Institute for Medicine, was founded in 1970. Election to the National Academy of Medicine is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. The list of the 70 new members of the National Academy of Medicine by JBHE finds that five, or 7 percent, are Black according to Good Black New s: Evan Dale Abel is the John B. Stokes Chair in Diabetes Research and director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center in the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. Dr. Abel is a graduate of the University of the West Indies and holds a Ph.D. in physiology from Oxford University in England. Linda Burnes Bolton is vice president and chief nurse executive at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Burnes Bolton is a past president of the American Academy of Nursing and the National Black Nurses Association. She is a trustee at Case Western Reserve University. A graduate of Arizona State University, Dr. Burnes Bolton holds two master’s degrees and a doctorate in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles. Otis Webb Brawley is a professor of hematology, medical oncology, medicine, and epidemiology at Emory University in Atlanta. He is also the chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society in Atlanta. Dr. Brawley earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago. Melissa Lynn Gilliam is dean for diversity and inclusion and a professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Dr. Gilliam is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. Elizabeth Odilile Ofili is the senior associate dean for clinical and translational research, professor of medicine, and director of the Clinical Research Center at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. Ross was ordered to stay put at home in the case where he allegedly pistol-whipped a man. A judge ruled Friday Rozay’s home confinement wasn’t necessary since the alleged victim didn’t live anywhere near him. The judge said Ross has to stay clear of where the alleged victim lives, and he has to notify officials before leaving the state of Georgia. Ross was given some traveling wiggle room in August … for business reasons. Looks like the rapper will take advantage of his newfound freedom … he’s got a show in Chicago next month. Now Ross can spend more time with lady without worrying about her trying to date one of his artists !
16-Year-Old Oregon Girl Diagnosed With Bubonic Plague A 16-year-old teenage girl in Oregon is in the ICU recovering from a case of bubonic plague , according to the Oregon Health Authority and the Crook County Public Health Department. Via CNN : Health officials believe she contracted the bacteria from an infected flea during a hunting trip earlier this month in Morrow County, Oregon. According to a press release, the young woman began feeling sick on October 21 and was hospitalized in Bend, Oregon on October 24. Plague is rare in Oregon, with only eight human cases diagnosed since 1995 and no deaths, according to the Oregon Health Authority. The plague usually occurs in rural and semi-rural areas of the western United States, most commonly in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. The bacteria that causes the plague is naturally occurring in the environment. Humans become infected by fleas who have fed off of infected rodents such as rats, chipmunks and squirrels. Symptoms usually occur in two to six days after exposure and include an overall feeling of sickness, sudden fever, abdominal pain, swollen lymph nodes, nausea and vomiting. It is successfully treated with antibiotics when caught early. There have been 15 other human cases of the plague in the United States this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Four of those patients have died. End of times!
Lamar Odom Gets Taken Off Dialysis And No Longer Needs Kidney Transplant Good news coming from Lamar Odom ‘s camp today! The former Laker baller has responded so well to medication that in the last 48 hours doctors have moved him from the ICU where he was getting dialysis according to TMZ . Doctors told Lamar his kidney problems were life-threatening, and they told him they’re surprised at the dramatic improvement. Lamar is on the floor where hospital staff performs physical therapy. We’re told Lamar’s motor skills are impaired from the strokes, and he’ll undergo increasingly rigorous therapy to regain function. We’re told the Kardashians are happy about the news, with one big caveat … Lamar’s now able to make his own decisions, and he hasn’t necessarily chosen wisely during the last few months. Black Engineers Makinde Adeagbo Creates Non-Profit To Help Blacks In Tech How important are Black people in STEM careers ? Makinde Adeagbo knows how isolating it can be to live and work in Silicon Valley as Black man . The techie says it’s even more isolating to be a software engineer in the sea of white faces… Via Good Black News : Adeagbo, who is an engineer at the San Francisco company Pinterest, says he can go weeks without spotting another black engineer in America’s tech hub. “It’s not only that you are the only black person in the room or in the company, often times you are the only black person you see in Palo Alto or Menlo Park,” says Adeagbo, 30. About 1% of engineers at Facebook and Google are African American. The population of Palo Alto, Calif. is 2% African American, Menlo Park, Calif., is under 5%. Adeagbo says he hit on the idea while volunteering as a mentor to a couple of computer science students. “These students knew they had someone who had their backs, whom they could look up to and reach out to when they needed help. I thought to myself: Every black software engineer could accomplish a lot if they had someone like this,” says Adeagbo. . The name /dev/color is a reference to a common directory on computer systems “as well as our efforts to strengthen the community of Black software engineers, engineers of color,” he says. Adeagbo’s /dev/color is joining Black Girls Code, Code 2040 and the Hidden Genius Project, a new and growing wave of enterprising organizations founded by African Americans aimed at addressing the scarcity of African Americans in the tech industry. “Other black software engineers need to provide this for the black engineers coming behind them,” says Adeagbo, who is splitting his time between /dev/color and Pinterest. “We all need to work together to pull ourselves up and make sure we are accomplishing all that we can.” #BlackSTEMLivesMatter
