Lower Manhattan public school parents are shaking their heads over the stunt the NBA free agent and his wife Khloe Kardashian pulled when Odom’s daughter and son graduated from their respective public schools last week. On Wednesday, Odom’s 13-year-old daughter Destiny graduated from I.S. 289 in Battery Park City. A source familiar with the situation tells us that although the girl’s mother, Liza Morales — who was engaged to Odom from 2000 to approximately 2008 but never married him— initially invited Kardashian to the school ceremony, she had to rescind the offer when, a few weeks before the big day, the school limited tickets to three per family. That left a ticket for Odom, Morales and Destiny’s grandmother — but not Kardashian. For some reason, the source says, Khloe was determined to attend, and the source claims, in the days leading up to the graduation, Odom and Kardashian’s camp lobbied the school for an extra ticket. “The school held its ground,” says our source. “But, on the day of the graduation, Khloe showed up anyway and they let her inside.” This was after the couple was photographed walking hand-in-hand to the graduation ceremony. Photos of the couple with Destiny at the graduation ceremony can also be found on the Internet. “It is going to be a HOT day in NYC today!” Kardashian tweeted on Wednesday. “Lamar and I are excited though!!! It’s graduation day for his babies!!!” Well, not exactly. Our source says that Odom’s 10-year-old son L.J. graduated from the same school’s fifth grade on Thursday. “What was sad was that after bringing Khloe uninvited to his daughter’s graduation, he didn’t even show up for his son,” says the source. “They got their photo-op the day before and then he couldn’t be bothered. It was beyond hurtful,” says the insider. Other parents “couldn’t believe it.” Jill Fritzo, a spokeswoman for Kardashian and Odom, insists that the ballplayer did attend his son’s graduation “with Rob Kardashian,” but L.J.’s uncle says otherwise. “I was there and sitting in the back. Lamar was not there,” says Liza’s brother, Nathan Morales. Looks like the folks over at The Game aren’t wasting any time trying to fill the openings left by Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall’s departure. The “ATL” star, Lauren London will be joining the cast of the BET sitcom for its sixth season. The 27-year-old, whose previous TV credits include 90210 and Entourage, is penned to play the role of Keira, a 20-year-old former child star who is currently appearing on a Cosby Show-esque sitcom. According to TV Line, the show’s producers are also on the lookout for a male lead to play an educated, all-star running back to act opposite Lauren. The Game has just concluded it’s fifth season, with Pooch’s character deciding to get a fresh start by joining Tia’s character in Washington D.C. The show will return next year with regulars Wendy Raquel Robinson, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez, Brandy Norwood and Barry A. Floyd. A new set of characters may be just the thing the writers need to breathe new life into the stale show. It would have been nice for them to introduce the new characters before getting rid of Derwin and Melanie, but maybe they’ll do guest spots to help phase out their storyline. The door-knocking in California might be on hiatus for a little while… Judge Rules That Jehovah’s Witness Group Pay $20 Million To Sexually Abused Woman In what both sides described as a momentous ruling, a jury in Oakland, Calif., has found that Jehovah’s Witnesses was partly responsible for the alleged sexual abuse of a girl by one of its members and must pay her more than $20 million. The Alameda County Superior Court jury on Thursday awarded $21 million in punitive damages to the plaintiff, who is now 26 years old. That was on top of the $7 million in compensatory damages it awarded her on Wednesday. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ legal entity, is responsible for the entire punitive damages amount and 40 percent of the compensatory damages, said Rick Simons, attorney for the plaintiff. Sixty percent of the compensatory damages was assessed against Jonathan Kendrick, the man accused of abusing her. Candace Conti sued Watchtower, the Fremont, Calif., congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Kendrick in 2011. It’s msnbc.com’s policy not to identify victims of sexual abuse, but Conti agreed to be identified so that any other victims would feel they could come forward too. “The ultimate goal of the lawsuit was to have a change in policy, to be able to ID these people, child molesters, to the congregation to protect children,” Conti told msnbc.com. “Secondarily, to have silent ones come forward and tell their stories and to bring to light that overall issue of violence and the hush-hush policy.” Both her parents were Watchtower congregation members at the time of the abuse, she said. “I was trying to be the best Jehovah’s Witness I could be at that time,” she told msnbc.com. WTF?!? Is NOTHING sacred anymore?? Jim McCabe, attorney for the Fremont congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, said that he was “stunned” by the verdict and would appeal. “This is the first case I know of where a church has been hit with liability involving a rank-and-file member,” he told msnbc.com. “Mr. Simons has his twist on the facts and we will see how a court of appeals views the trial court rulings and the evidence,” McCabe said. The jury found that the elders who managed the Fremont congregation in the 1990s and who were under the supervision of Watchtower knew that Kendrick, a member, had recently been convicted of the sexual abuse of another child, but they kept his past record secret from the congregation, said Simons. Kendrick went on to molest the plaintiff, who was a Jehovah’s Witness member in Fremont, over a two-year period beginning when she was 9 years old, the lawsuit contended. Kendrick was eventually convicted in 2004 of the sexual abuse of another girl, and is now a registered sex offender in California, Simons said. He has not been criminally charged with abusing the plaintiff, but Simons said the case is under investigation by law enforcement. We’re glad that this young woman got SOME restitution for the suffering she has endured for so many years. Smokers Patients rejoice! Connecticut Legalizes Medicinal Herbs A measure allowing use of medical herbs in Connecticut has been signed into law by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Connecticut joins 16 other states and the District of Columbia in authorizing use of the drug to provide relief from debilitating medical conditions. Malloy said Friday that the law will allow the Department of Consumer Protection to regulate and monitor the use of herbs in a way that will help avoid problems seen in other states. Patients will be able to obtain herbs only from certified pharmacists. The law allows for the licensing of at least three but not more than 10 herb producers statewide. Qualifying conditions for patients include cancer, glaucoma, AIDS or HIV, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. More than 20% of the United States already supports the green yahmean for those that need it, shouldn’t be long before stoners are smoking Swisher Sweets freely in the streets.
