Your President Hard At Work: 9/11 Heroes Get The Health Help Two Bush Administrations Didn’t Bother To Create

It took almost ten years after the devastating attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. for the first responders who risked their lives on September 11, 2001 to get government help with their health expenses. President Obama took time out of his Honolulu vacation to sign the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act into law yesterday. President Barack Obama said Sunday he was honored to sign a bill to provide aid to survivors of the Sept. 11 attacks and first responders who became ill working in the ruins at the World Trade Center. “We will never forget the selfless courage demonstrated by the firefighters, police officers and first responders who risked their lives to save others,” Obama said in a statement. “I believe this is a critical step for those who continue to bear the physical scars of those attacks.” The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was named after a police officer who died of a respiratory disease he contracted during the 9/11 rescue operations. The bill was one of the last measures Congress passed before adjourning in December. Some Republicans tried to block the measure, saying they were concerned with how to pay for the bill. They dropped their opposition after lawmakers struck a compromise to reduce the costs. The $4.2 billion measure will be paid for with a fee on some foreign companies that get U.S. government procurement contracts. “At long last, the President’s signature has ended our nine-year struggle to address the 9/11 health crisis. The Zadroga law will save lives and fulfills our moral obligation to care for those who rose to the defense of America in a time of war,” said Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y. “This is a great victory for the heroes of September 11th, the firefighters, police officers and construction workers. Justice is finally being served,” added Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly hailed the passage of the bill. “The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were an attack on America by a foreign enemy and addressing its health impacts is a national duty,” Bloomberg said. Let’s see the Republicans spin this one at the end of the year when they start their 2012 campaigning. Source

Coons Of The Day: NAACP Has A Change Of Heart About Haley Barbour After The Release Of Imprisoned Sisters

The NAACP is some of the most fickle, wishy-washy, folks in the world when it comes to who they support and why… A week ago, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour had drawn the ire of the NAACP for insensitive comments about growing up during the 1960s civil rights era. Today, the potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate is being hailed by the nation’s oldest civil rights group as a “shining example” of a governor. Why the change? Barbour on Wednesday decided to free two sisters who have been imprisoned on life sentences since 1994 on armed robbery charges. The plight of Jamie and Gladys Scott had long been championed by the NAACP. Gladys Scott was released on the condition that she donate a kidney to her 38-year-old sister, who requires daily dialysis. In a statement, Barbour said, “The Mississippi Department of Corrections believes the sisters no longer pose a threat to society. Their incarceration is no longer necessary for public safety or rehabilitation, and Jamie Scott’s medical condition creates a substantial cost to the State of Mississippi.” As much as we’d like to “praise” Mr. Barbour for his gracious pardon, we can’t shake the feeling that the “substantial cost to the State of Mississippi” is the real reason why the Scott sisters were freed. In any event, congrats ladies, we showl is glad dat de white man had camed to save ya’ll…*SUPER side-eye* Source

“Last Train To Paris” Isn’t Exactly Raking In That Dirty Money

Last week, Diddy was all proud that his heavy promo convinced 100,000 people to go pick up Last Train To Nowhere. This week? Not so much, we think. The album dropped from number 7 to number 44 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts, after moving roughly 30,000 copies in week two. It’s gonna be a slow crawl to Platinum for Dirty Money. But it’s not all bad news for Urban music. The week’s highest new entry comes from Jamie Foxx’s “Best Night Of My Life,” which parties it up at No. 6 with 144,000. It’s Foxx’s third straight set to see a late December release, following “Unpredictable” (issued on Dec. 20, 2005) and “Intuition” (Dec. 16, 2008). The latter set opened at No. 3 with 265,000 while the earlier album climbed in at No. 2 with 598,000 (before hitting No. 1 the week following). Eminem’s “Recovery” is right behind Foxx, flying 15 rungs to No. 7 with 137,000 (up 100%). It benefits from sale pricing in the iTunes Store and also zips 15-1 on the Digital Albums chart with a whopping 513% jump in sales. Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday” stands at No. 8 for a second week, selling 133,000 (up 36%). Keyshia Cole’s “Calling All Hearts” is the list’s second biggest debut, starting at No. 9 with 128,000. Her last album, “A Different Me,” was released, coincidentally enough, on the same day as Foxx’s last effort, on Dec. 16, 2008. “Different” launched at No. 2 with 322,000, one step ahead of “Intuition’s” 265,000. Both albums were blocked from No. 1 that week by the woman who reigns this week: Taylor Swift. Her “Fearless” set was in its third non-consecutive week atop the list, selling 330,000. Closing out the top 10 on the Billboard 200 is Rihanna’s “Loud,” climbing one spot to No. 10 with 111,000 (up 33%). Right behind her at No. 11 is the debut of Keri Hilson’s sophomore effort “No Boys Allowed” with 102,000. Hilson’s first release, “In a Perfect World,” debuted and peaked at No. 4 in April of 2009 with 94,000. We definitely didn’t expect Keri to break 100,000 copies her first week. Guess the ho sh*t paid off. Source

Congratulations: Tanisha “Pop Off” Thomas Is About To Become Somebody’s Wife

Now that Little Miss Pop Off has dropped some lbs and gotten her anger issues in check, her boo has decided to make an honest woman out of her. Tanisha Thomas, who was on the second season of “Bad Girls Club” and the 7th season of “Celebrity Fit Club,” got a holiday proposal over the weekend from boyfriend Clive. We’re told her man popped the question during Christmas dinner in front of Tanisha’s mother, aunt, brother and cousins — and Thomas immediately followed up the proposal by posting a photo of the engagement ring on her Facebook. Thomas tells TooFab she wants a “fantasy type wedding” with an 8-tier wedding cake and a horse and carriage. Tanisha also says other former “Bad Girls” will be bridesmaids and she hopes WEtv’s David Tutera will plan the big event. Tanisha estimates 200 guests for the giant shindig — which she says will likely take place in 2012. Aaaaaw! We love to see hood dreams come true! Source

Lady Gaga Backstage At The VMAs: The Realest Girl, The Meatiest Dress

Bigger Than the Sound captures a few moments when the cameras weren’t rolling. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Mark Ralston/ Getty Images On Sunday night at the Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga won everything besides Best Contemporary World Music Album, but you probably couldn’t tell by the way she acted. Or at least I couldn’t. After all, I was standing roughly 3 feet from her as she descended from the stage, Video of the Year Moonman in one hand, short-loin inspired clutch in the other. And at that moment, she didn’t seem like the biggest pop icon on the planet, a woman who genuinely inspires millions and appears determined to speak for the voiceless and use her status to elicit actual social change . Instead, she seemed like a very demure, very humble human being. This may have had something to do with the fact that she had just accepted an award from Cher (which can definitely be a disorienting experience), or because she had just won her eighth Moonman of the night, but it definitely struck me as odd. After all, if you take everything you know or have read about her, combine it with her videos, fashion sense and over-the-top, decidedly feisty live performances, you are left with a picture that is less human and more, well, deity. Gaga does not appear to be human — more like a pneumatic lion tamer with a penchant for creative haberdashery, or a fire-breathing neo-Shiva in sunglasses — which is sort of the point, I suppose. But, as I learned on VMA night, it’s not actually the truth. I don’t know why it took me so long to realize this. After all, I have interviewed her and used this very space earlier this year to examine her transformation from otherworldly star to a normal girl . But there was something about watching her fight back tears at the VMAs — something she continued to do backstage, just in case you were wondering — that made it click for me. I watched as she hugged Cher, whispered something to her and then made the trek down to her dressing room, still shaking slightly, still saying “thank you” to the various stagehands and show producers who shouted their congratulations as she passed. I followed her and her entourage out of the theater, trying to keep my eyes on her tiny shoulders as she was surrounded by a ring of beefy security guards. This is much tougher to do than you would imagine; after all, Gaga is very small in person, practically delicate. She does not walk as much as she tiptoes, mostly because of the McQueen armadillo heels she wears, but also because you get the sense that the slightest breeze would knock her over. There is a fine, almost-porcelain quality to her. You want to put her on a glass shelf. You want to run a feather duster over her. There are not many deities you can say this about. Her entourage headed downstairs, and again, I followed. They made their way into the hallway beneath the stage, a carpeted pathway lined with dressing rooms. Most of the stars heard her coming and popped their heads out to catch a glimpse of her. Yes, she has that kind of clout. I watched from a wall as her team of stylists emerged from her dressing room and started clapping and cheering, and only then did I notice that Gaga was smiling. This was the real her, the person that only her closest friends — and, I suppose, nosy reporters — get to see. The Gaga that only comes out when the camera’s aren’t around (which is something, like, three hours of each day). There were still tears in her eyes, though now she wasn’t crying; she was laughing, making a kind of gulping sound. It was exactly the kind of thing you or I would do in a situation like this, when we have just triumphed and are now getting to share that moment with our friends. And I watched as she disappeared into her room, followed by her inner circle. The door closed, and her security guards fell into place, but you could definitely hear the celebratory whoop that happened immediately afterward. It was certainly genuine. After all, Gaga cares about winning awards, though I suspect it has more to do with the fact that she gets to share the victory with her friends. That’s the kind of person I’m guessing she is. I don’t know how long she stayed in there, because I was already making my way down to the other end of the hallway, where Kanye West was having an impromptu, celeb-filled party in his dressing room. It stopped traffic. Usher popped in. Rihanna did too. There were ballerinas involved. The contrast between the two rooms was noteworthy. Because even when the lights aren’t on, Kanye still carries himself like a deity. It’s part of his mystique. Gaga is different. She doesn’t need a mystique; being human seems to be enough for her. And, yes, I realize I’m making tremendous assumptions based on a few unguarded moments, but you learn a lot from someone when they know the cameras aren’t rolling, when it’s just them, their closest confidants and maybe a Moonman or two. For a minute, I got to see the real Lady Gaga, and it was all I needed. She cries and laughs and even gulps on occasion. She is humble and genuine. She is human, after all, even when she’s wearing a meat dress. You learn something new every day. Share your thoughts on Gaga’s victorious VMA night in the comments below. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Vince Vaughn And Wife Kyla Weber Expecting A Baby

The actor and his wife will be first-time parents, People magazine reports. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kyla Weber and Vince Vaughn Photo: Jonathan Daniel/ Getty Images Vince Vaughn , the star of bachelor-friendly flicks like Wedding Crashers and Swingers, is starting a family. The actor tied the knot earlier this year with Kyla Weber, and People magazine confirms the newlyweds are expecting their first child together. “They’re having so much fun together and they’re so excited to be first-time parents!” a source told the magazine. Although Vaughn is known for fast-talking his way through bromance-themed flicks, he told People last year that he was ready to settle down. “It’s the first time that I really want to have kids,” Vaughn said. “I’ve been very fortunate in my career, and my life has been about that for so long that you get bored of it. You’re ready for your life to be about other people and other things.” A new baby isn’t the only development in the actor’s life. According to recent reports, Vaughn will star in the Ron Howard-directed “Cheaters,” teaming up with fellow funnyman Kevin James for the comedy. But while the actor is entering a happy chapter in his personal life, he’ll juggle a moral dilemma onscreen: Playing James’ best friend, Vaughn’s character can’t decide whether to tell his friend that his wife is cheating on him. DeAnna Pappas: Engaged to Stephen Stagliano, Planning Shotgun Wedding?

Former star of The Bachelorette DeAnna Pappas is not only engaged to Stephen Stagliano, a former contestant on the show, the pair are planning to wed soon. Like really soon. DeAnna and Stephen, who pined for Jillian Harris on her season The Bachelorette , were fixed up by his brother, Michael Stagliano, and his girlfriend Holly Durst. Holly was let go by Matt Grant when she was a contestant on The Bachelor , and also dated Jesse Csincsak, who got engaged to DeAnna on her season finale. We know, it’s really confusing. Bachelorette castoff Stephen Stagliano, left, is reportedly ready to marry DeAnna Pappas. She was previously engaged to Jesse Csincsak, but that didn’t last very long . As for DeAnna Pappas and Stephen Stagliano’s wedding, it’s supposedly imminent, although specifics aren’t exactly available, courtesy of anonymous sources. Take it with a grain of salt is all we’re saying. Hopefully, hosting her Lifetime series Get Married , where she offers wedding advice and tips to brides-to-be, will help prepare DeAnna for her own big day. Yes, DeAnna Pappas hosts a show about weddings, despite two failed attempts at marriage proposals on national TV … is this a great country or what?! The lovely D is currently back home in Georgia where plans for the quickie wedding “is all they’re talking about .” Congratulations if this is in any way true!
