Van Jones Praises Trump Speech, Twitter Explodes at CNN Pundit

CNN's Van Jones is a frequent Trump critic if there ever was one, but even he had to give it up to the POTUS after his speech last night. One portion of Trump's address to Congress in particular wowed Jones to tears, leading him to say Trump “became president” in that moment. Seriously. That happened! Jones said Trump's tribute to Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, who died in a raid in Yemen, was when he “became President of the United States.”  Trump's handling of the aforementioned raid on a terrorist compound has been questioned, but Owens' heroism is impossible to dispute. “One of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period,” Jones called it, clearly taken aback emotionally. During Trump's remarks to U.S. lawmakers and guests, cameras trained on Owens' widow, Carryn, with tears streaming down her face. Facing her, Trump said her husband's legacy was “etched into eternity,” and Carryn received a standing ovation from all of Congress. Plenty of critics suggested that the President acknowledged her husband's bravery as an exploitative tactic, but Jones wasn't buying it. “There are a lot of people who have a lot of reason to be frustrated with him, to be fearful of him,” the CNN pundit said of the POTUS. “But that was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period. And he did something extraordinary.” “And for people who have been hoping that he would become unifying, hoping that he might find some way to become presidential? “They should be happy with that moment.” “For people who have been hoping that maybe he would remain a divisive cartoon, which he often finds a way to do,” Jones said … watch out. “They should begin to become a little bit worried tonight,” Van said, because for the first time, Trump was a unifying figure on stage. “Because that thing you just saw him do, if he finds a way to do that over and over again, he's going to be there for eight years.” “Now, there was a lot that he said in that speech that was counterfactual, that was not right, that I oppose. I will oppose,” Jones cautioned. “But he did something tonight that you cannot take away from him” in that moment, and “he became president of the United States.” Again, much remains to be sorted out when it comes to the raid in Yemen, which the White House has asserted was a complete success. That is a stretch, as many things disseminated from Sean Spicer and company are, but blindly blaming Donald Trump is equally dubious. His administration's actions, and assessment after the fact, have been called into question by intelligence officials, as well they should be. But it's not as if a war widow has never been honored in such a way, or that military ops under other administrations were always smooth. Jones critics on the left absolutely tore him a new one on Twitter after his praise of Trump, baffled that he would dare say such a thing. Perhaps they miss the point somewhat in doing so. Van clearly opposes Trump on policy, a.k.a. 95% of the substance of his speech, and vigorously so. But attitude and optics count for a lot. “Watch this dude,” Jones told Anderson Cooper on his home network, because Democrats could have “a much bigger problem” now than a day ago. Check out Jones' reaction to Trump below:

First Order Of Business: Trump Signs Executive Order Knocking Down Obamacare, Barely 6 Hours In Office

Donald Trump Signs Order To Repeal Obamacare Welp, y’all’s new president didn’t waste ANY time trying to send America back to the dark ages. Before even lacing up his dancing shoes or putting on his tux for all the inaugural celebratory activities for the evening, he made SURE to place his John Hancock on an executive order that severely scaled back the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Via New York Times : In his first executive order, President Trump on Friday directed government agencies to scale back as many aspects of the Affordable Care Act as possible, moving within hours of being sworn in to fulfill his pledge to eviscerate Barack Obama’s signature health care law. The one-page order, which Mr. Trump signed in a hastily arranged Oval Office ceremony shortly before departing for the inaugural balls, gave no specifics about which aspects of the law it was targeting. But its broad language gave federal agencies wide latitude to change, delay or waive provisions of the law that they deemed overly costly for insurers, drug makers, doctors, patients or states, suggesting that it could have wide-ranging impact, and essentially allowing the dismantling of the law to begin even before Congress moves to repeal it. However, even though Trump is hype to dismantle it, he hasn’t yet dreamed up what he plans to implement instead… But he and Republicans on Capitol Hill have not yet devised a replacement, making such action unlikely in the immediate term. “In the meantime,” the order said, “pending such repeal, it is imperative for the executive branch to ensure that the law is being efficiently implemented, take all actions consistent with law to minimize the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens of the act, and prepare to afford the states more flexibility and control to create a more free and open health care market.” SMH. We knew dark times were ahead, but who knew this orange nightmare would get to work so quickly? He couldn’t even wait for his celebration to be over before chipping away at healthcare for millions… Getty/AP/WENN/Splash

Got Kleenex? This Story Of A Convict Who Had His Sentence Commuted By Obama This Week Is A Doozy

How Obama Helped This Florida Felon From Being Condemned To Die In Jail Proud to make this one of my final actions as President. America is a nation of second chances, and 1,715 people deserved that shot. https://t.co/4hPxG7hqHL — President Obama (@POTUS44) January 19, 2017 President Obama’s last day in office was an important one for some 300 or so people, who all now have an opportunity to live outside prison walls. One of those people was Trenton Copeland, who penned a letter to REVOLT in October, detailing how he was sentenced six years ago to die in prison for a non-violent offense: I am Trenton Copeland. I am 33 years old and serving a life sentence in federal prison for a nonviolent drug offense. With no parole in the federal system, I have been fundamentally condemned to die in prison. Though it’s a memory I do not enjoy revisiting, I will never forget the day I was sentenced. I was 27 years old and to hear the judge tell me I was being committed to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for the rest of my life was unreal. The life sentence I received for a nonviolent drug offense screamed that I was beyond redemption and unfit to breathe air as a free man ever again. Words cannot even begin to touch the feelings I had. I was only 27. Locked up for the rest of my life? I couldn’t really process it. And I still can’t, to be honest. The letter detailed how Copeland had turned his sentence into an opportunity to better himself, he accepted full responsibility for his fate, admitting his actions put him behind bars (charged with conspiring to deal cocaine, Copeland received a life sentence because he had two prior convictions for marijuana and cocaine possession). Since being sentenced he had worked to get his GED and had dreams of becoming a youth counselor, helping prevent others from suffering his same fate. He closed by saying without receiving clemency from Obama or major changes to the criminal justice system he would die behind bars. It’s no secret that Congress has been unresponsive to all of Obama’s pleas to reduce mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders. In eight years, the former President has had to take matters into his own hands and grant commutations at his own discretion. The Washington Post has picked up where Revolt left off — detailing the turmoil Copeland and his family have experienced in the months since his open letter. A week after Copeland’s essay published, Obama commuted the sentences of nearly 100 prisoners. Copeland’s name was not on the list. Good news came to dozens more federal inmates across the United States that month, bringing Obama’s total number of commutations above 1,000 — more than the previous 11 presidents combined. Copeland didn’t make Obama’s list in October, WaPo reports. But he still had some remaining hope. On Tuesday, in one particularly dramatic, last-minute clemency action, Obama pardoned 64 people and commuted the sentences of 209 others, including Chelsea Manning, the Army private convicted of stealing secret diplomatic and military documents and giving them to WikiLeaks. The president also granted a commutation Tuesday to Oscar López Rivera, a Puerto Rican independence activist who was a member of the Armed Forces of National Liberation, a terrorist organization that killed and wounded people in the 1970s and 1980s with bomb attacks. In addition, Obama pardoned more than five dozen people, including baseball great Willie McCovey and retired Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright. Copeland was not on Tuesday’s White House list. The WaPo account of Copeland’s wait is painfully suspenseful, as the last days of Obama’s White House are coming to a close, he begins to fear for the worst. But then… On the last full day of Obama’s presidency, Annie Fray sat at her desk in a Pensacola marketing office. At five minutes to noon, her phone rang. It was Copeland’s lawyer. The president had released his last list. “I shouted so loud my head started hurting,” Fray said. Then she finished her shift and called her son, who will now be free before he turns 40, with half his life to go. Crazy right? To be able to put a face to these disastrous drug sentencing laws makes such a huge difference. Sadly, we are doubtful that the incoming administration give’s AF about all the other Trent Copelands still behind bars. Photo Courtesy Brittany Byrd

13 Reasons to Be Hopeful About the Next Four Years

It is official: As of January 20, 2017, Donald Trump is the President of the United States . And while this (not so) simple fact has left many Americans way down in the doldrums, The Hollywood Gossip is here to try and make you feel better. For the following reasons, the next four years might not be so terrible after all… 1. Star Wars: Episode VIII But who’s countinr, right? 2. More Alec Baldwin on SNL! It beats him screaming at reporters, doesn’t it? 3. The Kylie Jenner Sex Tape You know it’s coming. And you know Kylie will deny playing any role in its release. 4. The Kimye Divorce You also know it’s coming. And the fallout will be epic. This may be how Kim finally breaks the Internet for real. 5. The Americans is Returning! Season 5 of the most underrated show on television premieres on March 7. (Wait… this drama is about Russian spies who have infiltrated America. Dammit.) 6. The Midterm Elections We’ll have a chance to reorganize the government and balance out Congress in 2018. It’s not to soon to get involved. View Slideshow

Illegitimate-Elect: Donald Trump Calls Civil Rights Leader John Lewis “All Talk” On MLK Weekend!

The Audacity Of Orange: Donald Trump Tweets Badly About John Lewis This has gotten out of control… If you saw the film “Selma” you probably will remember watching a young John Lewis on the screen, living out his legacy as a Civil Rights leader who walked beside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lewis, as pointed out by Goldie Taylor of The Daily Beast , “was president of the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee (SNCC) and is the youngest and only living member of “The Big Six.” Lewis was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders, young people who risked their lives to challenge racial segregation in the South. He was arrested 45 times, beaten and bloodied in the name of human rights. Lewis became a congressman who represents Georgia’s 5th Congressional District… But Friday he told Meet the Press” he will miss his first Presidential inauguration in 30 years in Congress because he doesn’t feel that Donald Trump is a legitimate President. Of course Lewis’ comments didn’t sit well with Trump who struck out (where else?) on Twitter. Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to…… — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 14, 2017 mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 14, 2017 Hours later Trump added to his rant: Congressman John Lewis should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities of the U.S. I can use all the help I can get! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 15, 2017 If we thought he was an idiot before our opinion is now even lower. Lewis is a national hero who was beaten bloody for our freedoms. He sacrificed a lot in the name of progress, facing arrest some 45 times. Don’t be misled by Trump’s tweets. While crime and poverty rates are above the national average, the area is neither “crime infested” nor falling apart. It’s actually thriving — home to the upscale Buckhead neighborhood, several Fortune 500 companies — including Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines — as well as Emory University, Georgia Tech, Spelman, Morehouse and Atlanta’s airport. And as for Trump’s assertion that Lewis is all talk and no action is PURE HOGWASH… Also via Daily Beast : In 1994, when the country was caught up in hysteria and pushed a crime bill that later destroyed whole communities, John Lewis was one of only eleven black members of the House to stand against it. One of the “results” of Lewis’ activism was the Fair Housing Act, the very legislation under which the Justice Department sued Donald Trump and his father. SMH — can it get any realer than that? It is unfortunate that it is easy to believe that @realDonaldTrump would've have been proudly standing against John Lewis then as he is now pic.twitter.com/DSDzy0xduz — Khary Penebaker (@kharyp) January 14, 2017 There has been a huge wave of outrage on social media over Trump’s latest attack but we thought the tweet above said it all. Lewis has fought for what he believes is right his entire career, why should he be expected to stop because Trump was elected. In the meantime the NY Daily News is reporting that Trump has canceled an MLK day visit to Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture over scheduling issues. You may recall President Obama urged Trump to visit the museum after he said during the presidential campaign that there has “never been a worse time to be a black person” in America… Clearly Trump needs to brush up on his American history. Houston Shooting: 9 Injured, Suspect in Custody

Houston police say that officers have shot a suspect who opened fire in the city on Monday morning, taking him into custody before he could take any lives. According to Houston Office of Emergency Management spokesman Michael Walter, a minimum of nine individuals were transported to hospitals with injuries from the shooting. The incident took place near Wesleyan Street and Bissonnet Street. The statuses of those injured are unknown at the moment. There are no reports of any other shooters at this time, per the Houston Police Department official Tweeter feed. It wrote the following shortly after apprehending the suspect, whose name has not yet been released: An emergency alert went out this morning that stated the shooting scene was believed to have been contained to the area of a strip mall. The alert told residents in the area to stay far away. Authorities have not released further details regarding the shooting, according to CNN and other outlets. But KTRK reports that firefighters and police officers swarmed the scene once gunfire broke out. UPDATE : At least one victim is in critical condition, while another is in serious condition. The conditions of the other victims remain unknown. We’re also learned that the suspect was an attorney and that authorities are investigating whether issues at his law firm led to the shooting. A bomb squad reportedly searched the suspect’s vehicle and found “additional weapons inside,” the police now confirm. One witness, Antwon Wilson, told ABC 13 that he was caught in the crossfire. And he’ll never forget the experience. “I literally heard the gunshots past my face,” he told the station. “It’s a hard pill to swallow.” We will continue to update this story as more news breaks.

Anthony Weiner: Headed to Prison For Sexting Teenage Girl?

These days, the unfortunately-named Anthony Weiner is better known for his numerous sex scandals than for his political career. Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011 after inadvertently tweeting a sexually explicit photo of himself. In 2013, Weiner returned to the political arena with a failed campaign for mayor of New York City that was cut short when it was revealed that Weiner had been sexting Sydney Leathers, a young woman who went on to tar in an adult film based on her involvement with the disgraced politician. It seems even that incident wasn’t enough to keep the 52-year-old from sending explicit texts and social media messages, and Weiner was caught up in two additional sexting scandals in the past month. While his political career has come to an end, until recently Weiner was married to Huma Abedin, a top aide for Hillary Clinton. Abedin left Weiner after the latest round of revelations, but his name is still linked with the Clinton campaign, and thus, his scandalous private life is still making headlines. And unfortunately for everyone involved, Weiner’s dalliances keeping getting more and more shameful. Back in August, Weiner was caught in yet another sexting scandal after having sent a number of explicit photos (at least one of which showed the former congressman lying in bed next to his young son) were posted by a woman who set out to “catfish” Weiner.  Last week, it was revealed that Weiner had been sexting a 15-year-old girl , a move that could land him in serious legal trouble. Page Six consulted with legal experts to find out if Weiner could be facing jail time for the illicit texts. The answer? Some believe that not only is Weiner headed to prison, he latest misdeeds might lead to a new federal law being enacted. “This could be the tip of the iceberg with a minor,” a DC lawyer and former DA who believes Weiner will do time. “This is not the first school girl he wants to see in her uniform.” She added that he’ll almost certainly be facing a civil suit from the girl’s family as well: “This is disgusting and depraved. I would not want to be his lawyer. He is not going to win this case.” As a result of Weiner’s latest scandal, New York State Assembly candidate Dean Hart is calling for a bill to criminalize sexually explicit text messages sent to minors: “When you are an adult you don’t play games with 15-year-old girls . . . This should be illegal and eliminates the difference between images and writing.” Hart added: “This is how he gets his jollies. I thought he needs a shrink … but now [with a minor], they got to make it a crime. “When people drive drunk, they are not permitted to drive a car again, so they should ban him from using cellphones and the Internet.” Others believe Weiner will avoid jail due to the fact that thus far the texts between Weiner and the teen that have surfaced have not featured any explicit photos. Whatever the case, this latest controversy should serve as a decisive nail in the coffin for Weiner’s political career and his marriage.

Kardashians Meet with Gun Violence Victims, Don’t Suck for Once

We hate to admit this, but… … the Kardashian might not be entirely terrible. They are mostly terrible, don’t get us wrong. They mislead young fans into thinking that waist training is actually an effective thing… they think that posing naked on social media is a lot of work… and they brought Tyga into our lives. But still. Consider the following: On Friday, Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian – along with Kris and Kendall Jenner – attended a private lunch with men and women who have lost relatives due to gun violence. The event was organized by Moms Demand Action and Everytown. Both are organizations that push for various gun control measures to be passed in Congress. “Having lunch with the families of loved ones who were killed by gun violence. I learned a lot from listening to their stories,” Kim wrote as a caption to the above image. She added: “Life is so precious! What will it take for this to stop? #NotOneMore #Everytown #MomsDemand.” View Slideshow: 13 Times Kim Kardashian Suffered from Serious #FirstWorldProblems Gun control appears to be one real issue that Kim takes seriously. After the massacre inside an Orlando nightclub that killed 49 patrons in June, Kim Tweeted: “Under current federal law people on terror watch lists can legally buy guns – this is called the Terror Gap,” Kim tweeted yesterday. “We have repeatedly called on Congress to close this loophole that makes it easy for dangerous people to get guns & kill. “Nothing has changed!!!! People continue to senselessly die. When will these gun laws be changed?!?!?!?!!!!?????” Those who watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians online will see footage from this luncheon on a future episode, so of course the family used the occasion as a fodder for their TV show. But whatever. If they made any difference at all in helping to get some common sense gun control laws passed in this country, we can’t say anything negative about them at this time. Erica Smegielski, whose mother was killed in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, also shared a picture she took with Kendall and Kourtney on Twitter, writing along with it: “Awesome to hang with these gun sense champs.” Also, Khloe posted the following on Instagram: “Was able to spend the afternoon with the families of victims of gun violence. Today was so very moving and impactful. “I learned so much and i’m so grateful to everyone who was brave enough to share their very traumatic stories.” In late June, Kim Kardashian went on a rant against the government after four new gun control measures failed to get passed. “So terrorists on fbi’s wanted lists can legally still buy guns. Oh & mentally ill people can buy guns without a background check too,” she wrote, adding: “The fact that anyone can so easily access guns is so scary & after all of the devastating loss the Senate should have not failed us!!!” Again, we shudder to write it, but… She makes some good points. We’re sort of frightened here. We’re not sure how to react to this. Here. Let’s post some Kim Kardashian nude selfies so everyone feels nice and normal again about these reality stars: View Slideshow: Kim Kardashian Nude Selfies: A Birthday Suit Breakdown
