By Rob Markman Donny Goines Photo: MTV News Fire Starter : Donny Goines “If you don’t know my name, I’m not working hard enough.” That’s been Harlem rapper Donny Goines’ mantra since 2006, when he first decided to pick up a microphone. His inspiration, as with so many other up-and-coming MCs, came from Jay-Z. After watching his 2004 concert film Fade to Black (two years after it was initially released), he took on a reworked version of the name of famed novelist Donald Goines and hit the studio. It may have taken him some years to get here, especially considering the pace at which new-gen rappers release music online, but he insists that he is in it for the long haul. “In this day and age, music is so worthless; people make it worthless. The reason why I say that is because they’re so focused on the actual speed of getting music and they’re so focused on the microwave type of music, and I decided a long time ago that I will not do that anymore,” he told Mixtape Daily. “If you can’t wait for me and you can’t wait for my albums, then you’re not really, truly a fan.” After making a splash online in 2008 with his viral video freestyle series “BARS,” Donny went on to release digital projects such as Minute After Midnight, The Breakfast Club and last year’s 20X EP. His next album is the one that Goines firmly believes will launch him into the consciousness of rap fans across the globe. Success Served Cold will be offered as a free digital download and feature contributions from Bun B, Fred Da Godson, XV, Laws and producer Statik Selektah. The album blends two popular phrases: “Success is the best revenge” and “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” “This is like the precursor to my long-term career,” Goines said of the album, which will come in the fall. “I’ve worked my whole career to this album and that’s what makes it so special. It’s something that when people hear, they’re gonna understand the hunger and the drive and the determination.” Donny began working on Success Served Cold in late 2010, and he has even partnered up with mtvU to document a piece of his recording process. “I want to create classics,” he said before recalling how his favorite rappers used to release music. “I waited two years for a Nas album; I waited three years for a Biggie album. By James Montgomery Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis Photo: MTV News On Friday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers officially ended their hiatus with the premiere of “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” the first single from their upcoming I’m With You album. About a month before the premiere of “Maggie,” MTV News sat down with RHCP’s Anthony Kiedis and Josh Klinghoffer in Venice, California, to talk about the band’s new album (and the lengthy break that preceded it). We’ll be rolling out more of the interview as we get closer to I’m With You ‘s August 30 release date, but we’ve already given fans a taste of what they can expect, when Kiedis and Klinghoffer explained the genesis of the album’s title. And now, with “Maggie” officially out of the box, we figured it would be time to pull the curtain back on a second portion of the chat, in which Kiedis revealed the origins of the song itself — origins that began with an hour-long jam session and exactly one classic bass line. “When I first heard [‘Maggie’], I didn’t know it would be a single. [But] I knew that I loved the jam, ” Kiedis explained. “My first recording of that, I don’t think it had many vocals on it. It was kind of mostly instrumental, about an hour long. Flea brought it in as a very specific exercise to write a classic bass line. He woke up, had his tea, sat down: ‘I’m going to write a classic bass line. You can’t stop me.’ Played his bass line until he felt it was cooked into a classic, brought it to us and said, ‘This is Classic Number One.’ On a good day, you just know if there’s music to wrestle with and get with, and it was one of those moments.” So Kiedis sat down and listened to the track and was immediately struck by the propulsive groove Flea had laid down. And things just took off from there, with Klinghoffer adding a winging guitar line and drummer Chad Smith providing a loose, limber backbeat. But even if things were taking shape, Kiedis said he never thought “Maggie” would be anything more than a B-side. If that. “I took it home and it felt so fun to listen to at length that I literally left it on in my driveway, opened the door and danced with the tree next to me for quite a while,” he said. “I had no idea that it would even be a song, I just thought, ‘Oh, this is a great dance track. Let’s put it on as a B-side, [an] hour long.’ And then, as fate would have it, people heard it, and they were like, ‘Oh, that’s your best thing right there. That’s your best thing.’ ” And so, eventually, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” made the leap from jam to official first single. And now that it’s out there, Kiedis knows he’s going asked plenty of times just who this Maggie is. Unfortunately, he’s not about to reveal his inspirations. “It’s just a collection of memories and people along the way that had maybe left my consciousness until I heard that music, and then they kind of came dancing back into my consciousness, and out the old pen onto the paper,” he smiled. “Names have been changed to protect the innocent. Recently, I opened a fortune cookie after eating Chinese food and was oddly confused by the quote that was inside. It read as follows: “It is much easier to be critical than to be correct.” Reading it at the time, I had to look at it a few times before I could have an inkling of its significance. However, after putting it away for a few days and coming back to it, I was able to have a better idea of what the simple quotation had to do with life wisdom. If you really think about it, being “critical” and finding faults with people or ideas can be much easier than actually finding the “correct” words for what is really in front of you. Sometimes you just have to set aside your judgments to truly get a sense of what is “right” or “correct” for the particular situation. While many people do not taking fortune cookies seriously, since many of them have similar sentiments stuffed in them, I have always been one of those people who takes any sort of wisdom to heart. It made me wonder, though, why are certain quotations so hard to understand at first glance? Is it the wording that gets muddled or the idea that it takes time to come to terms with particular concepts? Perhaps I had never thought about what it meant to be “critical” as opposed to “correct,” at least in those words. Everyone has their own definition or perceived ideas about what certain words or phrases mean, which is why it is so important to be well-versed on language. Language is contextual, however, and no two people have the same understanding of everything they read. With these ideas in mind, what is it about the written word that has such resonance in our lives and has the ability to transcend cultures? Optimism & The Art Of Facing Your Fears One reason that this idea interests me is that I am a huge fan of song lyrics. Music has a different feeling when there are words and particular ideas involved which can shape the song as a piece of commentary. If you were to compare fortune cookie quotations and song lyrics, the two can go hand and hand due to the memorable quality that particular ideas can have. Sometimes, song lyrics can be as quotable as fortune cookies, since particularly radio friendly tunes have lines that are repeated, therefore stored in the consciousness of those listening. Lyrics have always been a refuge for me when I need guidance, just as people quoting common witticisms can give people hope at their lowest points. Fortune cookies and song lyrics bring logical ideas into the world through different mediums, yet sometimes have the similar aim of giving people knowledge of themselves and others that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Words of wisdom can come in many forms, but many times it is the wording and categorization of these quotes that has the strongest effect on the reader. Perhaps if “critical” or “correct” had been replaced with a different word, the quote would have a completely different meaning. That is why a thesaurus is so important to have knowledge of, since anyone can have a handle on wording if they know what choices they have at their disposal. The written word is so diverse, as there are many different languages, lingo, and ideas that have varied definitions depending on the culture. Quotations, such as the ones used in fortune cookies, are short and t0-the-point with their wording, which can be interpreted differently based on your own experiences and mindset. No definition is completely set in stone, especially if you have a particular dialect or upbringing that predisposed you of a different way of thinking. Words are subjective in their presence, which makes relate-able quotes from songs and novels, for example, inspirations to people based on their ideals. Words Of Wisdom: Malcolm X Quotes While talking to people when you are down or need advice can be the best medicine for a particular time, it can sometimes be that a quote from your favorite song, a fortune cookie, or even a line from an intriguing book can end up being the pick-me-up that you need. Instead of having a long-winded conversation with someone about a topic, a short and simple line about being “critical” versus being “correct” can have a strong effect on you due to its straight and to-the-point path. Being short on words does not always mean that there isn’t something important being said. More often than not, it is the subtleties of a tightened up quotation that end up being the real wisdom of the line. Words can have a strong impact on people’s opinions and way of life in general, since many people have particular quotes that they live by. Words can even be associated with symbols, as the word I live by is “balance” and I associate that with the sign of the yin-yang. In general, keeping strong morals and optimism in life is important, so words can be the catalysts that people need to be who they want to be.
