Spielberg, Hanks, Hefner help Hollywood

Hollywood Sign Hollywood stalwart Tom Hanks , uber Producer-Director Steven Spielberg and Playboy father Hugh Hefner were among those who donated money for the land purchase in connection with the preservation of the world famouse HOLLYWOOD sign.  Hefner reportedly donated the final $900,000 required by the conservation group. In s statement, Hefner said, “”My childhood dreams and fantasies came from the movies, and the images created in Hollywood had a major influence on my life and Playboy.” He referred to the cultural landmark as “Hollywood’s Eiffel Tower.” The sign is located on the southern side of Mount Lee in Griffith Park, north of the Mulholland Highway and was last restored in 1978. Rumor: New iPods may be delayed

Tomorrow is supposed to be the day Apple will be talking about the new iPod Touch and iPod Nano with their rumored 3.2MP integrated cameras. According to AppleInsider and Hardmac, however, they may not be releasing them as soon as we expected. According to both sites, they have heard a rumor that production of a bad camera module will push back the release of the new iPods

Google’s search engine pinpoints extinction

Thanks to the BBC for a link to this paper describing how Google's algorithm for ranking web pages could determine what species are most critical for sustaining ecosystems. The authors write in PLoS Computational Biology that their version of PageRank could ascertain which extinction would likely lead to ecosystem collapse. Species are embedded in complex networks of relationships
