For Your Information: AT&T Is Dropping $39 Billi To Rescue T-Mobile Customers From Their Wack A** Service

This could be the greatest thing to happen to T-Mobile customers … or the worst thing to happen to the cell phone industry. AT&T Inc. has agreed to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, but the deal isn’t set to close until a year from now, and it will likely face tough regulatory scrutiny. Here’s what a completed deal could mean for customers: – Bigger choice of phones for T-Mobile subscribers. T-Mobile, as a much smaller carrier than AT&T, doesn’t get as many exclusives on top-line phones, and it doesn’t have the iPhone. This won’t be a big benefit to T-Mobile subscribers who don’t have contracts – if they want the iPhone today, they can sign up with AT&T or Verizon Wireless. But subscribers under contract would find it easier to upgrade to an iPhone. – Fewer pricing plans to choose from. T-Mobile and AT&T have different offerings, some of which might disappear from the market. – No more unlimited data plans. AT&T has stopped offering unlimited data plans in favor of plans with monthly data usage caps and overage fees. T-Mobile USA still offers “unlimited” data for smartphones for $30 per month, but slows down downloads after 5 gigabytes of traffic in a month. If the deal closes, current “unlimited” subscribers would likely be grandfathered in, but AT&T would probably stop offering the plan to new subscribers. – Better network coverage. Combining the two networks will improve performance is some areas, because there will be more towers available. However, today’s AT&T phones can’t use T-Mobile’s 3G wireless data network, and vice versa, because they run on different frequencies. – Wider rural broadband coverage. AT&T is pledging to increase spending on the construction of a new ultrafast broadband network by $8 billion, to cover rural areas. – The big question is whether the combination would let AT&T, Verizon and Sprint raise prices on wireless service once competition from T-Mobile disappears. AT&T points out that prices have fallen through a decade of mergers in the industry, but public-interest groups are raising concerns. Source

Lady Gaga really wear slabs of meat as a dress

It didn’t reek or leave a trail of blood, but warmed up pleasantly on her skin. Lady Gaga’s “meat dress” was real and made of beef, designer Franc Fernandez revealed Monday, one day after the singer traipsed around in it at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Singer Lady Gaga poses in the press room during the MTV Video Music Awards at NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on September 12, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. — Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images Construction took two days and the dress was refrigerated; Mr. Fernandez later transported it in a cooler – “its own little coffin.” The final product weighed 40 pounds and sat atop a corset. “Gaga said it smelled good,” he said. The singer also got meat booties wrapped in butcher twine and a clutch with an antique brooch applied to the beef. Mr. Fernandez said the dress would not rot, but harden into “jerky.” Although the butcher suggested taxidermy, the designer said the dress would be immortalized in the “Gaga Archives.” The singer, who donned a meat bikini on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan last week, told Ellen DeGeneres she meant “no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian,” insisting it was a human-rights statement of sorts. Ms. DeGeneres, a vegan, then presented Gaga with a kale bikini. Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, was equally unimpressed. “What’s next: the family cat made into a hat?” she wrote in a statement Monday. They can rest assured: Mr. Fernandez says the beef gown was a one-shot deal. “There’s not going to be meat dresses in the future.” Related Posts: Lady Gaga From Toronto to Buffalo Lady Gaga Raises 250K for Japan Relief Efforts Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez: Vanity Fair Oscar Party Couple Ride ‘em Gaga: The Lady hits Texas in her ten gallon hat and cowboy boots Lady Gaga

The Belo Monte Dam- Destroying the Amazon

How unconscienable is this! The Brazilian government is now moving ahead on a project that will result in the construction of the third largest dam in the world in one of the most diverse and ecologically rich areas of the world: the Amazon. It is to be constructed on the Xingu River which is home to the Paquacamba and Arara indigenous peoples. It will divert 80% of the river from its original course, thus leaving swaths of indigenous land in drought while flooding over 100,000 acres of rainforest and displacing 20- 40,000 people. Once again we see shortsightedness at a time when we need to see the big picture. Hydroelectricity in areas such as this in an age of global warming and drought is a short term solution that will only bring long term consequences to environment, economy, culture, and also the climate balance of the planet. Solar energy is the one renewable energy source that is most viable here that will also preserve the environment, water resources and culture of the indigenous peoples who call this area their home. This action will then in turn spawn multiple dam projects all the way up the Amazon that will only displace more people when it is not necessary. It is heartbreaking to see what is being done to the last vestiges of ecological richness that we must preserve for the future. There is still time however to tell the Brazilian government you oppose this. I will post a link below where you can do this. Thanks. added by: JanforGore

Another marijuana tunnel and two more warehouses found

20 tons of pot seized, eight arrested in San Diego and Tijuana. Reporting from San Diego — Federal authorities have unearthed another cross-border tunnel in a San Diego warehouse district, the second major tunnel discovery and multi-ton seizure of marijuana believed to be from Mexico's most powerful drug cartel in a month. The tunnel, which started in a residence in Tijuana, stretched nearly half a mile and split into two passageways, with the branches emerging at separate warehouses nearly 800 feet apart. The tunnel was within a block of a subterranean passage found three weeks ago, where authorities seized more than 25 tons of marijuana, the second-largest marijuana seizure in U.S. history. With Thursday's haul of 20 more tons, authorities said they had dealt a significant double blow to Mexican organized crime groups. The amount seized was the equivalent of about 17 million marijuana joints, said Ralph Partridge, the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration office in San Diego. “This has a huge impact,” Partridge said. Authorities believe the drugs found in the tunnels this month belonged to separate cells of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which has long used northern Baja California as staging ground for smuggling drugs into California. The discovery on Thursday morning came after U.S. agents stopped a tractor-trailer loaded with marijuana bales that had just left a warehouse on Marconi Drive. Inside the empty warehouse space where a “For Rent” sign hung out front, agents found an opening cut into the concrete floor. They traversed the tunnel to the second opening in a warehouse a few blocks away on Via de la Amistad. To find the opening on the Tijuana side, Mexican Army soldiers traversed the entire 2,200-foot passage, which featured lighting and ventilation systems. They surfaced in the kitchen of the residence where a family lived. Authorities said six people were arrested in Mexico. “They were very surprised,” said Tim Durst, an assistant special agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement who heads the multi-agency San Diego Tunnel Task Force. The bust culminated an eight-month investigation, built largely on tips from informants. Authorities seized four tons of marijuana in the Tijuana residence and another location in Mexico; three tons in the tunnel; and about 13 tons in the tractor trailer. Two men were arrested in California, including the driver of the tractor-trailer. The tunnel was one of the longest ever discovered and had several unique features that highlighted traffickers' evolving approach to ferrying drugs under the border. The floor of the passageway was lined with tongue-and-groove wooden boards that served as a level surface for the cart and rail system. There was an underground room, roughly 10 by 20 feet, where smugglers off-loaded the marijuana bales from the cart before hoisting them to the surface. The most unusual feature was the construction of two tunnel branches, which authorities speculate allowed smugglers alternate exit points in case of surveillance. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-tunnel-20101127,0,416000.story added by: im1mjrpain

Obama Admin to Speed Up Offshore Wind Power Development

Photo: Kim Hansen , Wikimedia, CC As it stands, it typically takes a staggering 7 years — at the very least — for an offshore wind project to receive federal approval to begin construction. And as we’ve seen with the infamous Cape Wind project , there’s plenty of red tape on the local and state levels as well. So its no surprise that the the US is seriously lagging in the offshore wind power sector. But the Dept. of the… Read the full story on TreeHugger
