M.I.A. Says ‘Nicki Minaj Runs Hip-Hop’

‘I just feel like I get her,’ M.I.A. says of the Young Money MC. By Mawuse Ziegbe M.I.A. Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic M.I.A. ‘s brand of glitchy, warbling electro, zany fashion sense and singular vocals make the star one of the most eccentric artists on the scene. Perhaps that’s why the controversial Brit has taken a liking to unconventional MC Nicki Minaj . The two joined forces for the remix of M.I.A.’s “Teqkilla” (a track she called “exciting”), and the artist said she was impressed by Minaj’s imaginative approach. “She’s really creative with how far she’s willing to go,” M.I.A. told DJ Skee of Los Angeles’ 102.7 KIIS-FM . “I just feel like I get her.” M.I.A. pointed to Minaj’s willingness to put in work as the reason the MC has become an increasingly powerful force in hip-hop. “Nicki Minaj runs hip-hop,” she said. “She works hard, and that’s what it is. She’s focused, and that’s good. She’s got really good work ethic.” M.I.A. is renowned for her unique style, but the singer has mystified some fans with the title of her latest album, ///Y/&#92. The singer acknowledged that the title’s use of computer jargon may have rendered it less Google-friendly, conceding, “because of the ‘forward slash’ ‘backward slash,’ it’s just not findable.” However, she asserts that punching out the moniker of her third studio album is actually very simple. “Everyone’s got those keys. Everyone’s got a ‘forward slash’ and everyone’s got a ‘backward slash.’ It’s actually a lot easier to write, ’cause you go [ typing noise ] ‘Y’ [ typing noise ]. You can write the album name with three keys,” M.I.A. explained. The singer also said she was into the aesthetic appeal of the title. “I like it. I like it when you look on iTunes and you got the album title, and it’s just made up of slashes. It looks good.” Do you see similarities in M.I.A. and Nicki’s styles? Let us know in the comments! Mel Gibson’s Rant Posted Online

Actor can be heard hurling profanities and a racial epithet at ex-girlfriend in audio recording posted by RadarOnline.com. By Kelley L. Carter Mel Gibson Photo: Michael Kovac/ FilmMagic A taped recording of the controversial Mel Gibson rant was posted online Friday (July 9). The actor’s voice can be heard hurling a racial epithet at his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in an audio posted on celebrity news site RadarOnline.com . During the profanity-riddled, two-minute tape, Gibson repeatedly refers to Grigorieva as a whore and chastises her for dressing too provocatively. As the actor grows increasingly angry, his voice rising, he invokes the N-word, telling her that only she would be to blame if she were she to be raped. “You look like a f—ing bitch [in] heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n—–s, it will be your fault,” Gibson says. “You provoked it. You are provocatively dressed all the time.” The website reported that Grigorieva claimed to have been recording Gibson because she was afraid he might cause her some harm. Gibson can also be heard accusing Grigorieva of lying to him about having breast implants. “They just look stupid,” Gibson is heard saying. “Keep them if you want. … They look like some Vegas bitch, a Vegas whore.” reported that Gibson and Grigorieva, who have a child together, have been engaged in a bitter custody dispute over their daughter. RadarOnline.com began publishing excerpts of the phone conversation last week, but had not made an audio available. Grigorieva told the website she made about 30 minutes worth of recordings of Gibson before they broke up in April. The founder and executive vice-president of RadarOnline.com, David Perel, told the AP that the site had verified that it was in fact Gibson speaking on the recording. Perel doesn’t explain, however, how they obtained the tape, but does add that the website didn’t pay for the recording. “We felt it was so newsworthy and so explosive, we simply had to report what we heard,” Perel said.

BP, geoengineering and genetic manipulation

BP won't stop at dangerous deep water drilling: the company is bent on still more dangerous projects, including genetic modification and hacking the planet's atmosphere… Sometimes you have to notice the silences. Where has Dr. Steve Koonin, Under Secretary for Science at the US Department of Energy, been since the Gulf disaster happened? Koonin was intimately acquainted with the very technologies that have failed so spectacularly on the Deepwater Horizon rig in his former job as BP’s chief scientist. While his current employer, Barack Obama is trying to figure out 'whose ass to kick’ over the spill, he might find it instructive to zip back to a presentation by Koonin at MIT in 2005, in which we see Koonin-as-oilman boasting of his company’s technological prowess in taking oil exploration and production into the ultra deep waters of the gulf. In particular, he says that $50 million to bore a hole in the gulf’s seabed will yield a million barrels a day, describing the technical challenges of depth and pressure. A small note on the bottom of his slide reads 'marine environment creates integrity challenges’ – engineering-speak for 'accidents likely’. Known unknowns Did senior management at BP such as Koonin know that they were pushing the bounds of environmental safety in deploying these ultra-deep water-drilling technologies? Of course they did. But as Koonin's MIT presentation makes clear, stretching technological boundaries into risky areas is how BP navigates in an era of peak oil. Koonin's much lauded role at BP was precisely to apply cutting-edge science to the problem of declining oil reserves and growing climate crisis. Koonin led a team of researchers that would allow for the more economical extraction of hard-to-get oil (e.g. tar sands, deep water drilling). More significantly, Koonin took a central role in sinking millions of dollars of investment by BP into the new field of extreme genetic engineering known as synthetic biology, where entrepreneurs are building the DNA of entirely novel microbes from scratch in order convert sugar plantations, corn fields and forests into biofuels to keep the car economy gassed up. It was under Koonin’s tenure at BP that the oil giant invested an undisclosed sum into Craig Venter’s Synthetic Genomics Inc to develop microbes that could be injected into coal seams and tar sands to release methane. Such methanogenic bacteria exists naturally in parts of the Earth’s crust but the ecological implications of artificially injecting super powerful methane-creating bugs and the potential for an accidental release of powerful greenhouse gas into the atmosphere has yet to be studied. Of course BP would counter that their experimental technology would not escape, just like hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil was not expected to gush out of the seabed. Synthetic organisms Just over a month ago, Venter announced the ‘birth’ of Synthia, the first artificial self-reproducing organism, thereby stimulating further investment in the controversial field and attracting many calls for more regulation and oversight of these new technologies. If we have learnt one thing out of the BP-Halliburton-Transocean disaster it is this: do not trust those who are profiting from the use of a technology with its safety. And then there is geo-engineering –the biggest technological gamble of all –which Koonin and BP see as a viable backup plan. Geoengineering refers to seemingly outlandish large-scale schemes to re-engineer atmospheric and ocean systems in order to counteract global warming. Like the massive, improbable-sounding concrete caps, nuclear options and ‘top kill’ plans now being played out on the deepwater horizon well head, such schemes have a boyish sci-fi feel to them – dumping iron in the ocean to prompt plankton blooms that would gobble up C02 or whitening clouds to reflect sunlight back to space. A Plan B for the world In 2008 David Eyton, BP VP for science and technology announced that a new area of investigation for BP was indeed geo-engineering. ‘We cannot ignore the scale of the challenge,’ he wrote ,‘and we all need to have a plan B if the world is unable to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations and the worst of climate change predictions are realized.’ cont. added by: JanforGore

Eclipse Director David Slade: ‘I Have No Idea Why Anyone Would Hire Me!’

When David Slade was announced as the director of the third Twilight film, Eclipse , it seemed like a risky proposition: he had only made two other movies ( Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night ), and both indicated a sensibility that might be too aggressive for the romantic Stephenie Meyer series. Perhaps that’s exactly what the franchise needed, though, as Slade’s turned in a well-received installment that’s a good deal more propulsive than Chris Weitz’s sluggish New Moon . The day after Eclipse’s Los Angeles premiere, Slade was still riding high from the audience’s reaction as he talked to Movieline about the tough shoot, his thoughts on the controversial Breaking Dawn , and the follow-up he definitely isn’t making next.

US town votes on plan to ban foreigners renting homes or having jobs

A Nebraska town, angry over a surge in the number of Hispanic residents, is voting today in a referendum on a new law that would require foreign nationals to get a licence to live in the town. The referendum in Fremont has been prompted by a sharp rise in Hispanic people drawn by work at local meatpacking plants combined with fears over job losses and demand placed on the town's social services because of the economic downturn. If approved, tenants who are not US-citizens would be required to get an “occupancy licence” from the city council. Even residents of nursing homes would be required to obtain such a licence. Federal law requires employers to verify the immigration status of workers but the proposed Fremont law would also open violators to local sanctions. Supporters insist it is not racist and is essential to protect jobs, healthcare and education for local people because the town's Hispanic population has surged from 165 to more than 2,000 in the past 20 years. It is unclear what proportion of those are in the US illegally but the big meatpacking plants where many work say they only employ people whose immigrant status has been verified. The Fremont Tribune has reported cases of Hispanic people, who are legal residents, being verbally abused and told to return to Mexico. Jerry Hart, one of the three sponsors of the legislation, told the Fremont Tribune that the proposed law is in part a security measure. “The federal law was put into place for a reason – to control how many people come into this country and to regulate the people, so they don't have communicable diseases and are not bringing in drugs or having criminal records and these people who are sneaking in – you don't know what you're getting. We could have terrorists and gang members and people involved in drugs,” he said. John Wiegert, another of the sponsors of the referendum, said: “A lot of them are coming here for the American dream and they're causing nothing but an American nightmare to me.” Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has declined to take a position even though he is a former Fremont city councillor and owns and rents out property in the city. Some business owners oppose the measure, claiming Hispanic residents bring money to the town and are concerned at the cost to taxpayers of legal challenges by civil liberties groups. The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the state of Nevada over a proposed referendum to introduce tough immigration laws – similar to the controversial measures in force in Arizona – which require police to detain anyone they reasonably suspect to be in the US illegally. The proposed Nevada law would require non-US citizens to carry proof they have the right to be in the US and make it illegal to transport or house undocumented immigrants, among other measures. The ACLU and the Nevada Open for Business Coalition, a mix of casino owners, shopkeepers, unions and civic groups, on Friday asked a court to block the vote on the grounds it would promote racial profiling and hurt the state's economy.”Not only does the intent of the proposal blatantly violate America's most fundamental values of fairness and equality, the expansive scope of it intentionally confuses voters,” said the ACLU's lawyer, Maggie McLetchie. The proposed Nevada law has run in to objections from some in the business communityconcerned at the economic impact of Arizona's anti-illegal immigrant legislation on the state. The controversial law has led to boycotts of Arizona by some organisations, costing the state part of its lucrative convention business as well as affecting tourism. Towns near the Mexican border also report a sharp drop in the number of customers from Mexico. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/21/us-town-licence-foreign-nationals added by: emarston

VIDEO: Biggest Gas Boom in History Blowing Up in US! (literally)

It's official: the expansion of hydro-fracking operations is creating the biggest natural gas boom in US history… the film GASLAND explores this controversial method of extracting gas. (Don't know what hydro-fracking is yet? — Watch the trailer!) Oil and gas companies are going to start hydro-fracking operations to drill for gas in NY this year if the state's Dept of Environmental Conservation (DEC) approves the permits. The DEC needs to do the right thing: wait until the Environmental Protection Agency finishes a national study on the environmental impact of hydro-fracking in the next year or two. Hydro-fracking, despite polluting the groundwater in many documented cases across the US, isn't currently regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This loophole is unacceptable — and corrupt. It's known as the “Halliburton Loophole” because Dick Cheney (former Vice President and former CEO of Halliburton) requested the inclusion of the provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. “The Energy Policy Act of 2005 exempted hydraulic fracturing from federal regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Reports of ground water contamination have questioned whether the exemption is appropriate. A complete listing of the specific chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing operations are not currently made available to landowners, neighbors, local officials, or health care providers.” “The FRAC Act, introduced in June 2009, would eliminate the exemption and would require the disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing.” (wikipedia) Why are companies being allowed to push ahead with this dirty, dangerous form of drilling? If it's as safe as the corporations say it is, then why can't they wait for confirmation from the EPA? Check out and support a group, called Frack Action, that has formed to oppose hydro-fracking and urge its regulation! Their website is really great: www.FrackAction.com added by: captainplanet71

Tupac Shakur ‘Had A Deadline,’ Naughty By Nature’s Treach Says

‘Pac didn’t see himself ‘growing old,’ his friend and fellow MC tells MTV News on what would have been Shakur’s 39th birthday. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Naughty by Nature’s Treach Photo: MTV News Tupac Shakur’s legacy still looms large in music more than 13 years after his untimely death. You can suss out ‘Pac’s swagger in everyone from DMX to Ja Rule; Kanye West continues Shakur’s tradition of being outspoken; and rappers still turn to his back catalog for insightful verses to graft into hip-hop hits. Part of the reason Shakur’s presence is still felt is because the controversial icon left behind a hefty amount of music, including a formidable collection of unreleased recordings. ‘Pac might have been on top of the music world when he died, but his close friend and Naughty by Nature MC Treach said Shakur’s work ethic was fueled by his belief that his demise was imminent. “We spoke many a time, and he was like, ‘I don’t see myself growing old,’ ” Treach told MTV News’ Sway on Tuesday, the day before what would have been Shakur’s 39th birthday. Treach, who came up with ‘Pac when the two were roadies for Queen Latifah and Digital Underground, respectively, said that despite his homie’s affable manner and upbeat energy, ‘Pac worked as if he had no time to waste. “You gotta listen to songs like ‘If I Die 2Nite’ and ‘I Wonder if Heaven Got a Ghetto.’ When he was in that mode, in that zone, you gotta be like, ‘What’s going on? You a’ight?’ ” ‘Pac couldn’t sit down for five minutes,” Treach continued. “He was always going, ‘Yeah, everything good, good, good.’ When you listen to him and you see his demeanor, he was more or less, like, on watch. He had a deadline. He was working at a pace, like, ‘Where you going? You going on vacation? You going to jail? You doing sh– like you tryna finish everything right now and cover stuff.’ You couldn’t find him half the time; he was gone. He had a plan.” Treach believes ‘Pac’s plan extended beyond just making thought-provoking music; the Jersey rapper said Shakur wanted to realize tangible change among his fans who were living the thug life. “Ultimately, he wanted to get the thugs all behind him — his thug nation, his thug life — and take them to the next level … unified, building up the community, reinvesting in the community, in the people.” Treach said he wanted to use music to get the attention of the streets but then eventually make life easier on the streets. “[He wanted to bring] them in thinking it’s a gangsta party, but it’s like … it’s a militant, protect-our-own party. He was truly like a baby Panther. He was like, ‘Yo, we gotta do something to reinforce that we gonna protect ourselves.’ ” Even though ‘Pac built his career on a brash, thug persona, Treach said there was way more to the star than his hard-core adherence to the ‘hood. ” ‘Pac was a clown. Everybody think he just like gangsta, thug-life ‘Pac. He’ll have a whole party just around him crackin’ up,” Treach said. “We almost got threw out a couple hotels. I’m talking full-floor water fights.” Treach said he found it hilarious to see the former Digital Underground associate “runnin’ around with a Humpty nose.” “He was an actor, he was a musician … anything you could put, if he wanted to do it, he could do that. But he was a fool too,” Treach said. “He did it well being a fool too. You don’t want to be around nobody that’s mean muggin’ all day and got an attitude and hatin’. ‘Pac wasn’t nothing like that. ‘Pac would have you just wanting to be around because you know you gonna have a ball around him and split some seams just having a good time.” His fiery flow, revolutionary rhetoric and undeniable artistry are some of the things that have endeared ‘Pac to millions of fans around the world. Yet Treach adds that his appeal as a person was very basic: “He had a glow to him. He had something you wanted to be around.” Share your memories of Tupac in the comments.

Disgraced Journalist Helen Thomas Praised By Terrorist Group Hezbollah

Disgraced journalist Helen Thomas must now be really proud of herself: the terrorist organization Hezbollah has expressed great praise for the recent anti-Semitic comments she made that forced her into retirement. As NewsBusters’ Ken Shepherd reported last Friday, Thomas told a rabbi that Jews living in Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go “home” to Poland or Germany. According to Israel’s Ynet, a representative of Hezbollah issued a statement Wednesday regarding this matter: Hezbollah on Wednesday saluted veteran US reporter Helen Thomas’s “courage” for her controversial comments against Israel, which sparked a furor and forced her to retire. “Respected American journalist Helen Thomas’s answer shows … a courageous, bold, honest and free opinion which expresses what people across the globe believe: that Israel is a racist state of murderers and thugs,” Hezbollah MP Hussein Moussawi said in a statement. I guess this is fitting for a woman who in 2002 reportedly claimed, “Thank God for Hezbollah,” and who in 2006 was cynically thanked by the late Tony Snow for presenting at a White House press briefing “the Hezbollah view.”   As Hot Air’s Allahpundit quipped Wednesday, “How nice that [Hezbollah would] open up and recognize her after her retirement. It’s like the terrorist equivalent of a gold watch.” Indeed.  Most people would be ashamed to be praised by terrorists. Thomas tonight must be feeling like she died and went to heaven.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ Video Fashions From Eva Peron To Steampunk

New video features S&M outfits, a latex nun’s habit and other controversial high fashion. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records In every performance she gives, Lady Gaga pays as much attention to her look as to her sound. She knows that her “little monsters” will examine each of her looks and try to re-create them. And in her new video for “Alejandro,” which debuted online on Tuesday (June 8), Gaga’s video style is very dark, very black-and-white and very German. And while the song’s Spanish, sun-soaked vibe could lend itself to cheery styles, instead Gaga took a turn for the dark. Most of the looks she wears in the clip, directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein, are more reminiscent of ones that may have been popular in Germany during the ’20s and ’30s. The looks of the video range from high fashion to high blasphemy, as Gaga takes on Catholic imagery. She not only sports a red latex nun’s habit, she also wears a hooded white-and-red tunic that feels like something that Joan of Arc would wear at the stake. Gaga does pay homage to the song’s Latin vibe in the opening funeral scene, when she wears a black lace veil reminiscent of an Eva Peron outfit — or something Madonna would have worn as Eva Peron in “Evita.” That is certainly not where the Madonna style references begin or end. At one point, when the video takes a turn for the “Vogue,” Gaga is seen alone dancing around in a black pant suit that could have easily been worn by Madge in 1990 (back when Madonna was channeling German movie icon Marlene Dietrich). Gaga even has her own take on Madonna’s infamous Gaultier cone bra, only Gaga has made it her own by replacing the cones with rifles. Then again, there are fashion references that are now becoming distinctly Gaga. She dances around in nude-colored underwear. She wears a black Victorian style dress, complete with steampunk goggles, a look that would have been at home in her “Paparazzi” video. Rocker Gaga, complete with black underwear, leather jacket, sunglasses and slicked-back hair, also makes a cameo. It feels like the woman we saw asking Beyonc
