T.I. Says His Akoo Clothing Line Has ‘Upscale Urban Appeal’

‘Everything is gonna be comfortable, casual,’ Tip tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Just like his song “I’m Back” promises, T.I. is back to business — all aspects of business. He has a film and album coming out in August, and the King of the South just finished an extensive shoot for his clothing line, Akoo, with guest Donnis. “The direction of the clothing line, in my eyes, is upscale urban apparel,” Tip said, sitting in the Ace Hotel. “I just wanna continue to diversify. Continue to grow. Continue to speak to the cool kids of America. That’s my idealistic outcome.” Tip, Donnis and a slew of beautiful women were showing off the company’s fall lines. “It’s all gonna be comfortable,” Tip said of his clothes. “Everything is gonna be comfortable, casual. To me, we got V-neck tees, crew-neck tees, wovens. Denim is a big part of the lines. We actually pride ourselves on the quality of our denim, especially at the price point we at. We got fleece. We got a lot of imagery, distinctive imagery on our pieces, that sets us apart from everything else going on out there.” Tip even showed off one of the Akoo bags, like the one he gave Larry King last week while visiting his show . Tip’s new album, King Uncaged, comes out August 17, while his film “Takers” drops August 20. Meanwhile, his Gangsta Grillz tape, F— a Mixtape, is tentatively slated to come out around May 25, according to DJ Drama’s Twitter . The tape is in conjunction with Dram and DJ MLK. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Charity Can’t Save Tim Urban

On ‘Idol Gives Back’ week, it was hard to notice anything but Crystal Bowersox. By Jim Cantiello Tim Urban and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: FOX It was “Idol Gives Back” week on “American Idol,” that time on the show when the judges beg viewers to help solve the world’s problems when in actuality, the interest from Simon Cowell’s savings account alone could buy every human a mosquito net. Or 12. It also meant that the top seven were forced to sing “inspirational songs” (with guest mentor Alicia Keys), a theme almost half of them interpreted as “cheesy soundtrack songs.” Crystal “Not a Quitter” Bowersox solidified her front-runner status by delivering the season’s first official “Holy Crap That Just Happened on Live TV” moment when she burst into tears singing lyrics about “the Lord.” But it wasn’t the Holy Spirit that moved her. She told Seacrest it was PapaSox sitting in the audience that made her lose her cool. Bowersox’s “People Get Ready” was so good that nobody even seemed to care that she sang into a bong-shaped microphone stand. Oh, and the other remaining six contestants sang too, I guess. Wednesday was the official two hour (and 9,000,000 minute) “Idol Gives Back” telethon, so you know what that means: The contestants wore virginal white, Annie Lennox sang the crap out of a song that makes you cry (even if Icelandic ash kept her on another continent), and we got to see a past Idol frolic with smiling African babies. (This year we had the added enjoyment of seeing David Cook’s hairstyle change 15 times in four minutes of television!) Producers pulled the biggest names out of their Rolodex for the admirable occasion, and unfortunately most of those celebs passed. But look! They booked Jonah Hill and George Lopez and Common and the one and only Octomom! But “Idol” is first and foremost a music show (just kidding), so the highlights of the night were obviously the musical guests. Each member of the Black Eyed Peas performed a separate song simultaneously (also of note: Fergie dressed like Wonder Woah-man). Mary J. Blige dramatically took off her sunglasses during an “all-star” “Stairway to Heaven.” Alicia Keys left her voice at home, Carrie Underwood sang about changes (not menopause), and Sir Elton John performed “Your Song” for the millionth time in his career. It was most unfortunate when a demon entered the body of Joss Stone and ruined her performance with Jeff Beck. I hope she gets exorcised soon. Perhaps “Idol” will raise money for that cause next year. In the end, despite David Duchovny, Disney stars, the POTUS, the Posh, Bill and Melinda Gates and the “Idol” judges begging America to be generous, viewers voted off Tim Urban, the shiniest happiest person in the cast. To think that $10 of singing lessons may have extended his “Idol” life. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Lady Gaga Is Celibate

Lady Gaga , known for her racy and sexually charged songs, has revealed she is celibate. In an interview to promote in her role in MAC’s new Viva Glam campaign, which supports global HIV and AIDS projects, she told the Daily Mail she is not having sex. And the singer confessed she doesn’t want her fans to have sex, either. “I can’t believe I’m saying this – don’t have sex. I’m single right now and I’ve chosen to be single because I don’t have the time to get to know anybody. So it’s OK not to have sex, it’s OK to get to know people. I’m celibate, celibacy’s fine.” And she said her celibacy is something she wants to celebrate with her fans. “It’s OK to be whomever it is that you want to be. You don’t have to have sex to feel good about yourself, and if you’re not ready, don’t do it. And if you are ready, there are free condoms given away at my concerts when you’re leaving! I remember the cool girls when I was growing up. Everyone started to have sex. But it’s not really cool any more to have sex all the time. It’s cooler to be strong and independent.” Not a bad message for all her young fans.

Lady Gaga Preaches, Practices Celibacy?

Singing sensation, sex symbol, rumored hermaphrodite … and celibacy advocate? If you’ve seen her music or seen any Lady Gaga pictures , you know about her racy, sexually-charged songs and outfits. But the star says she’s celibate. Come on … really? Really . “I can’t believe I’m saying this – don’t have sex,” she told the UK’s Daily Mail while discussing her role in Mac’s Viva Glam campaign, which supports global HIV and AIDS projects. “I’m single right now and I’ve chosen to be single.” “Because I don’t have the time to get to know anybody,” she said. “So it’s OK not to have sex, it’s OK to get to know people. I’m celibate, celibacy’s fine.” Celibacy is something Lady Gaga wants “to celebrate” with her fans. “It’s OK to be whomever it is that you want to be,” she said . “You don’t have to have sex to feel good about yourself. If you’re not ready, don’t do it. If you are ready, there are free condoms given away at my concerts when you’re leaving!” She’s a real humanitarian . The important thing, Lady Gaga said, is to be true to yourself: “I remember the cool girls when I was growing up. Everyone started to have sex. But it’s not really cool any more to have sex all the time. It’s cooler to be strong and independent.” Unlike Bristol Palin , she practices what she preaches. Says she’s proud to be a role model, too. “When you’re in the public eye, you’re a role model whether you want to be or not. I want to be. I’m not one of those self-obsessed artists who don’t care about their fans. It’s not just about the music.” Gaga said she has a “responsibility” to fans and that “and you’re an idiot if you don’t know that.” Wow, is this girl surprisingly grounded and smart or what?

‘American Idol’ Midterm: Experts Grade Ellen DeGeneres So Far

Jury is mixed on how DeGeneres has fit into the club. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson Photo: FOX As anyone who has switched high schools mid-year can tell you, it’s never easy fitting in with the cool kids. Midway through her first season on “American Idol,” talk-show host/ comedian Ellen DeGeneres hasn’t tripped and dropped her lunch tray in front of the whole school yet, but she also hasn’t exactly gotten the lead in the school production of “Grease,” according to our panel of experts. DeGeneres was ostensibly brought in to add a touch of humor to the judges’ table following the departure of judge Paula Abdul. But our “Idol” watchers said she was also tapped to beef up the panel before Simon Cowell’s departure, which became an eventuality before Ellen even had a chance to warm up her seat. And while she hasn’t set the show on fire, she’s made her presence felt with some patented wacky metaphors (see “ripe banana”) and her signature “I really like you” compliments. “Ellen started off strong in Hollywood Week,” said MTV News “Idol” aficionado Jim Cantiello. “As a die-hard ‘Idol’ fan, I was relieved that she took the job so seriously. … Ellen was into it. She kept her comic shtick to a minimum. It appeared she had a nice balance between Paula’s compassion and Simon’s acerbic wit. I was stoked.” Once the live shows started, though, Cantiello said DeGeneres’ critiques turned into endless run-on sentences, and the bad reviews almost always ended with “but I like you!” or “you’re adorable!” “I guess she was trying to cushion the blow, but it just clouded her criticism,” he said, lamenting that DeGeneres’ hug for Tim Urban after his cover of “Hallelujah” probably helped the iffy singer solidify a spot in the top 12. Bob Thompson, professor of television and popular culture of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse and an avid “Idol” watcher since day one, said he could sum up his feelings on DeGeneres in one word: disappointment. “Ellen is a very talented comic presence,” he said. “I’ve seen her do stand-up, and she’s really good at off-the-cuff stuff on her talk show. When I first heard she was becoming a judge, I thought two things: What credibility does Ellen DeGeneres have in judging future music stars? And, besides that massive gap in her r
