Source: Photography by Danielle James / Hello Beautiful I approach a cute restaurant with turquoise benches and tables, a pink sign letting you know where you are located: Pagoda Cafe . The trees provide shade to customers and I instantly notice a woman with a full blown out afro, dressed in a blue and white kimono effortlessly placed over a black dress. It’s hot and we meet under the cool shade. She smiles widely and introduces herself, “I’m Ericka.” I smile back, introducing myself and invite a hug, which she warmly accepts. “This is beautiful,” I slightly murmur, looking around at 1430 N Dorgenois Street. With what seems to be hyper hearing, (she has an active and stylish 5-year-old son named Christopher Jr. or “Deuce”), she responds, “Isn’t it? I come here almost every day. That’s why I chose this place.” Ericka was born and raised in the 7th Ward, her family is from the 7th Ward, “ It’s the same neighborhood that my dad and his siblings were born and raised. Some of my fondest memories start off with my siblings and me walking to my grandparents home (MaGen and Big Daddy, so southern) to hang out with our cousins.” Ericka’s kimono blows in the wind as we walk to the end of the cafe to take a few more shots. She reveals she purchased it on Amazon, “They have such great finds.” We talk about how her style has changed pre and post-Katrina. Katrina. The name that fills almost every conversation for some point in New Orleans. “Katrina taught me not to put so much stock in material things because they are replaceable.” Clothing to Ericka, is something that is fun, a way to express her personal style.” She’s a print girl. “You will usually find me wearing at least two prints at a time. Leopard print, and black and white patterns are my version of a neutral: they go with floral prints, stripes, solids and more.” Today, Erica is wearing only one print, but a poppin’ pink lipstick by MAC called Bunnybeams that goes with her pastel pink nails. We talk about trends she’s into, including African wax prints, and she casually adds, “It’s a lot more popular now than when I first started rocking the trend several years ago.” I see you, trendsetter. Find out more about Ericka, New Orleans, and how Katrina influenced her style with our exclusive interview below. Name : Ericka Ann Garnett Windon Nickname : My family only gives me nicknames…EB, ChooChooburger Age : 34 Location (Which Ward/Area are you from) : 7 th Ward Occupation: Attorney, and Fundraising and Development Professional HB: Define your personal style: I am a wife, a mother to a 5-year-old boy, and I work full-time, so it’s easy for me to fall into that busy mom trope of putting everyone else first. Between family commitments and my career, shopping for myself falls to the bottom of my list. But I make my wardrobe work with a bit of creativity and repurposing. If a dress or blouse has a plunging neckline or a zipper, I extend its usefulness by wearing it backwards for a new look. I love borrowing my husband’s bowties or pairing his oxford shirts with shorts and heels or thigh high boots for a feminine take on menswear. When I do shop, I invest in basics that will last: jeans, soft simple tees, an LBD, the perfect pant in a few color options, a moto jacket, and a trench coat. I tend to spend a bit more on my basics and then round those items out with interesting pieces such as an eye-grabbing print, a pop of color, or cool accessories. HB: How has New Orleans influenced your style? New Orleans culture is so rich, vibrant, and eclectic and that’s typically reflected in what I choose to wear. What I love about New Orleans fashion is that there is no one trend or style. Everyone is free to dress the way they like and wear whatever makes them feel good. My grandmothers, Genevieve (MaGen) Baptiste Garnett and Annie Mae Smith, are my biggest style influencers. MaGen taught me how to shop and what to invest in and Ann taught me how to be resourceful. Source: Photography by Danielle James / Hello Beautiful HB: What is your favorite hairstyle and why? My fro! It’s thick and unapologetically kinky, curly, and big. The fro takes work, but when it’s good, it’s really good. My hairdresser, Blair Harris, also keeps me looking fly whether it’s styled in a fro, braids or a blow-out. HB: Is there anything you lost in Katrina (clothing or accessories related) that you still wish you had? I wish I had one of the hats my maternal grandmother, Ann, made or her antique sewing machine and table, especially since she recently passed away. Ann was a skilled seamstress and milliner. She made all of my pretty dresses when I was a kid, and she taught me how to sew. I can still smell the spools of fabric in her sewing room, and I will never forget the sight of her happily sewing while humming to some tune. My grandmother lived in the lower 9 th ward, so she lost everything for the second time (the first being hurricane Betsy) in Katrina. The lower 9 is the neighborhood she and my late grandfather chose to raise their family, and it’s the neighborhood where they and their children forged lifelong friendships. I haven’t been back to the 9 th ward since the storm. HB: How has your style changed post-Katrina? My post-Katrina style is both adaptive and flexible with a touch of creativity. I like to take trends and make them my own to suit my mood and my personal aesthetic. I can also take something outdated and make it fresh again; I owe that to rummaging for bargain replacement clothes. HB: What’s one thing that people may not know about the fashion and style in New Orleans? We wear lightweight, breathable clothing because it’s so hot. When the temperature hits south of 70 degrees, we’re breaking out our finest winter wear. HB: Why did you choose this location for the shoot? I was born and raised in the 7 th ward. It’s the same neighborhood that my dad and his siblings were born and raised. Some of my fondest memories start off with my siblings and me walking to my grandparents home (MaGen and Big Daddy, so southern) to hang out with our cousins. Therefore, it was only fitting for the shoot to be done in the 7 th Ward. Bayou Road is home to some of the coolest minority-owned businesses in the city, such as the Community Book Center, a 34 year old African and African-American bookshop and community center; Coco Hut Caribbean Restaurant; and my favorite coffee shop, Pagoda. I live in an adjoining neighborhood, so Bayou Road is nothing but a quick bike ride or a leisurely stroll away. HB: What is something that most people don’t know about the specific Ward you reside? In the mid-1800s the 7 th ward was settled by a large population of free people of color. As a result, the neighborhood became a hub for music, culture, and innovation. The 7 th ward nurtured jazz greats Jelly Roll Morton and Lionel Ferbos, groomed civil rights activist A.P. Tureaud, and continues to churn our talent such as, Mannie Fresh, Tyler Perry, Frank Ocean, Luke James, Anthony Mackie, and Tyrann Mathieu. I currently live in the 5 th Ward in Mid-City, a few blocks from Bayou St. John. I love it here because I can get everywhere rather quickly. We frequently use the Lafitte Greenway Pedestrian and Bike Path to take us from the bayou to the French Quarter, and there are quite a few restaurants, hangout spots, and green spaces within walking distance. It’s pretty family friendly and you will always get a good morning, a good evening or a good conversation from local New Orleanians. HB: What is one thing you never leave the house without? Lipstick in a bold color, because my son loves when I send him off with a kiss on his hand; it’s like his very own badge of honor. DON’T MISS:

I know Minka Kelly is a legitimate name in acting, hollywood, bullshit…. But I can never place her, I just categorize her in Oliva Munn / Olivia Wilde/ and the other 40 year olds trying to prove they are still hot. I know that nerds love her, I see her name come up, but nerds love everything they see on TV or in their Nerd Shows, because they have no one to love in real life…. Meaning, I don’t take their opinion too seriously, even if it can make people exploiting their autism very rich…I’m not that dude. Instead I make fun of the girls you jerk off to and you hate me for it, while the cool people, the bullies like me don’t read the site cuz they are too busy not being nerds…so I should re-evaluate my strategy…not that I have one but Minka Kelly apparently does. A Family Scuffle Ends In Tragedy Everyone risks losing their cool when it comes to annoying younger relatives, but one 16-year-old girl proved what can happen when you take things way too far. In Colorado, Jennie Bunsom was arrested for allegedly killing her 7-year-old nephew Jordan Vong, according to Fox31. She was charged as an adult for first-degree murder after deliberation and first-degree murder of a person under the age of 12 by a person in a position of trust. Jennie Bunsom, 16, has officially been charged as an adult in the death of her 7 yo nephew, Jordan Vong. She faces 2 counts of 1st degree murder. @CBSDenver pic.twitter.com/ykuliZzZ8f — Jamie Leary (@JamieALeary) August 14, 2018 Bunsom lived in the basement of Vong’s family house. According to her arrest affidavit, the whole tragic incident happened on August 6. Bunsom was upset after a fight with her girlfriend right when Vong came downstairs asking her to play video games with him. Bunsom told Vong to go upstairs, but instead, he went and sat on her bed. This pushed Bunsom’s anger and she said she pushed the 7-year-old off her bed, causing him to hit his face on the floor. Instead of comforting her nephew, Bunsom took things to a horrific level. It’s a television miracle! Just days after Fox broke the hearts of comedy fans everywhere, NBC has swooped in and rescued in and rescued one of our favorite sitcoms on television. Indeed: Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been picked up for a sixth season! To quote Captain Raymond Holt…. HOT DAMN! Executive producer Dan Goor broke this amazing news late on Friday via Twitter, saying his series is coming back for at least 13 more episodes. “Hey everyone, just wanted to say no big deal but…. NBC JUST PICKED #BROOKLYN99 UP FOR SEASON 6!!!” Goor wrote, adding: “Thanks in no small part to you, the best fans in the history of the world! Nine-Nine!” Television shows get canceled all the time, of course. Overall, 20 were actually given the axe in just a 24-hour period yesterday. But the outcry over Fox canceling Brooklyn Nine-Nine was especially loud this week, with fans (including some famous ones; see below) aghast that such a funny and optimistic and well-acted program no longer had a home. View Slideshow: Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Canceled by FOX! Stars, Celebrities React “Ever since we sold this show to Fox, I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home,” NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. He continued: “Mike Schur, Dan Goor and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC, and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy line-up. “I speak for everyone at NBC, here’s to the Nine-Nine!” Fox put its own end to the cop comedy on Thursday, ending a five-season run. However, viewers – including famous names such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Hamill and Guillermo del Toro – raised such an uproar on social media that NBC apparently took notice. The show started as a vehicle for Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg, but has grown into one of the best ensemble comedies on television. It co-stars Melissa Fumero, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz and Chelsea Peretti, among others. It really is very, very funny. “#Brooklyn99 IS COMING BACK FOR SEASON 6 YOU GUYS ON NBC!!!!! You did this!!” Tweeted Fumero last night, adding: “You got loud and you were heard and you saved our show!! Thank you!! Thank you to NBC!! NINE NINE!” And there was this from Beatriz: “SQUAD YOU DID IT #BROOKLYN99 WILL BE ON NBC FOR OUR 6th SEASON!!!!!” We’re as happy as Captain Holt eating some kind of bland meal. Or as thrilled as Terry opening up a brand new cup of yogurt. Or smiling as widely as Jake thinking of the name of a friend’s sex tape. Will any other shows get saved by any new networks? Here’s a look at what else got axed this season: View Slideshow: TV Cancelation Scorecard: Which Shows Have Gotten the Axe?
Go ahead and say whatever you want about Tristan Thompson. The guy most certainly deserves it. But he also deserves credit for doing at least one thing right: he has created an extremely cute little girl with Khloe Kardashian. After doing so, Thompson cheated on Khloe all over the country, of course. But the long-time reality star has celebrated her daughter's one-month birthday by sharing the first legitimate and clear picture of baby True… … and she is such a cutie pie. Don't just take our word for it, however. Meet Khloe's baby girl below! 1. This is True No, literally. This is True Thompson. Her mom shared a video of her child, from which we took this screen shot, in mid-May of 2018 and wrote as a caption: “Happy One Month True.” 2. Haven’t We Seen True Before? Kind of. Sort of. Barely. Khloe did share this selfie, which included a close-up of her face and the tiniest glimpse of her daughter’s arm. 3. The Reactions It’s safe to say we aren’t the only ones who think True is a cutie patootie, huh? The positive responses to this reveal continue to pour in. 4. True This “Baby True is going to be a month old!” Khloe wrote on her app a little while ago, giving fans the following update: “So far, she’s so incredibly sweet and patient – really not fussy at all. I can tell she’s going to be super athletic and incredibly strong! She’s very calm, peaceful and loves to cuddle with her parents.” 5. The Announcement True was born on April 11, 2018. She weighed 6 pounds and 13 ounce and her parents were described as “proud,” despite the tension that existed between them at the time. 6. The Statement Despite questions over their status, Tristan and Khloe released a joint statement shortly after becoming parent. It read: “Our little girl, True Thompson, has completely stolen our hearts and we are overwhelmed with LOVE. Such a blessing to welcome this angel into the family! Mommy and Daddy loooooove you True!” View Slideshow
So hey, in case you missed it, there’s been some feuding between the cast members of Teen Mom 2. No, we’re not talking about the weird jealousy issues Jenelle Evans has with Chelsea Houska, or Jenelle’s ridiculous grudge against Leah Messer for daring to suggest that her husband shouldn’t have pulled a knife at a work event. We’re not even talking about perhaps the greatest feud in Teen Mom 2 history, the one between Jenelle and Kailyn Lowry . Nope, today we’re referring to The Great Battle of Javi’s Exes — that’s right, all that nonsense with Kailyn and Briana DeJesus. Things haven’t been great between these two ladies for a good long while now. They were never friends, but they became straight up enemies when Briana started dating Javi last year . As we saw in the season premiere of Teen Mom 2 this week, Briana revealed to Leah that she and Javi were going to take their kids to Disney World together. When Briana talked to Leah, she said that she and Javi weren’t even officially dating — she was pretty vague about everything. But when Leah reported back to Kailyn, she said that the whole thing seemed a little fishy, like Javi and Briana were going to take the kids to Disney World so they could be together, not to have a fun family vacation. She said that Briana had said they were going to stay in the same hotel, which Kail took to mean they were all going to be in one hotel room … the whole thing became a mess very quickly . The big issue, of course, was that Javi was taking two of Kailyn’s children — their son Lincoln as well as her son with Jo Rivera, Isaac — off for a trip without revealing the pretty significant details about Briana. When the episode aired on Monday, Kailyn revealed that her sons “came home calling her girls their cousins” because “that’s the kind of clusterf-ck it turned into.” Also on Twitter, Briana tried to explain that she and Javi had each planned their own Disney trips, and when she found out he was going to be there the same week she was, she invited him to stay with her family “in a 3 bedroom villa,” not in a hotel room. When Kailyn tweeted that because they work together, Briana violated “girl code” by getting with Javi, Briana denied it. “No girl code was broken,” she insisted. “Kail was never my friend. I was always closer to Javi. I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to share my story and keep it moving lol.” Obviously there’s a whole lot going on here, and there’s still a lot we haven’t seen. For example, we haven’t seen the big fight between Kailyn and Briana at last season’s reunion , which seems like it’s going to be good. And we definitely haven’t seen all the feuding that continued after Briana and Javi became official, which honestly was just so, so much. There’s clearly some residual issues between these two ladies, and in a new interview with Radar Online, Briana is spelling everything out for us. “She’s a cry baby,” she said of Kailyn. “The whole Javi situation, it’s already in the past. She needs to get over it. Let it go!” She also said that she’ll likely never be friends with Kailyn, but that she’s fine with that. “I don’t give a sh-t,” she explained. “I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to tell my story. I see her maybe once a year, maybe twice at that.” “She doesn’t mess up my mood. She’s obsessed. There is nothing I can do about it.” Oh, please. If Kailyn is obsessed, then so is Briana. They both tweet about each other, they both bring up things that have happened months ago. Briana isn’t somehow above it all, even if she does often delete her entire Twitter history so you can’t go back and get the receipts. But hey, we really appreciate totally ridiculous quotes like this one. So thanks for that, Bri. View Slideshow: Briana DeJesus to Kailyn Lowry: You’re Just Mad I Stole Your Man!
