Hampton University Professor Leads Initiative To Bring Health Screenings To Black Barbershops

View post:

T here is power that lies in the cultural influence of barbershops; especially within the Black community. These establishments have become far more than places where folks come to get their haircut; they’ve evolved into safe spaces where everything from political and social issues to health are discussed. A group of students from Hampton University is tapping into the impact of Black barbershops by utilizing them as an avenue to spread awareness about cancer prevention within the African American community, Southside Daily reported. Nursing professor pilots black men’s health screening program in a Hampton barbershop https://t.co/JASIj7V18s — Daily Press (@Daily_Press) October 18, 2019 The HBCU students teamed up with Hampton University nursing professor Jonathan Romero to launch an initiative called the “Barbershop Outreach Project” which was designed to address the disproportionate survival rates amongst men after they are diagnosed with cancer. Romero and the students—who are all pursuing nursing and pre-med degrees—teamed up with the Hampton-based barbershop BK’s Barbershop to provide health screenings for Black men. The project was created to cultivate a stronger relationship between Black men and the health system and to insert the importance of health screenings into barbershop conversations. “We set up right at the side of the building and we just asked ‘would you be interested in talking to us about your health?’” Romero told the news outlet. “Machismo or masculinity stubbornness will kill you in our community and has killed people in our community. People don’t seek out care so others won’t think they’re weak.” He hopes that Hampton University will be the leading force of change when it comes to Black health in the local community. As far as what’s on the horizon for the Barbershop Outreach Project, the organizers are planning to host more health-focused events at other barbershops. Black barbershops have become vessels for social change on many fronts. Through his program Barbershop Books , entrepreneur Alvin Irby is bringing literature to barbershops across the country to inspire young African American boys to read. B lack women are thriving in the realm of entrepreneurship despite the obstacles they face when it comes to securing capital for their business ventures. Research shows that although less than one percent of Black women entrepreneurs receive venture capital funding, they are the fastest-growing group of business owners in the country. Hair care entrepreneur Muhga Eltigani is one of the many female founders making power moves in business. According to Inc. , the NaturAll Club founder recently became one of about 50 Black women in the country to raise $1 million in funding. This Entrepreneur Just Became One of Few Black Women in the U.S. to Raise More Than $1 Million From VCs. First She Had to Turn Down $500,000 https://t.co/OdOQ8eUe1Z — Inc. (@Inc) October 12, 2019 Eltigani founded NaturAll Club in 2015. The natural hair care subscription platform delivers fresh handmade hair products on a monthly basis. Some of the products include Fresh Avocado Deep Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Growth Serum, and a handmade flaxseed gel. Last year Eltigani won $500,000 in a startup competition but decided to turn down the prize because it would have required her to move her Philadelphia-based company to Buffalo, New York. She wanted to wait for an opportunity that was in alignment with her brand. Her patience paid off and she received an investment from New Voices Fund CEO Richelieu Dennis . Dennis initially made a $1 million investment and after plans for Eltigani’s company grew, he decided to invest another $4 million. Dennis is dedicated to ensuring that women of color entrepreneurs have access to venture capital funding. “The facts about investments in women of color entrepreneurs, particularly black women, are astonishing,” Dennis told the news outlet. “Entrepreneurship among women of color has increased more than 320 percent, but less than 1 percent of those women receive access to the funding needed to sustain and grow their businesses. This is unacceptable.” Several individuals are stepping up to address the funding gap for Black women. Actress Keshia Knight Pulliam teamed up with entrepreneur Arian Simone to launch the Fearless Fund ; a $5 million venture capital fund to support startups created by women of color. You Thought: Drug Smugglers Are Reportedly Easily Sawing Holes In Trump’s “Impenetrable” Border Wall

Source: Alex Trautwig / Getty Reports Show Trump’s Border Wall Isn’t Working According to The Washington Post , mexican drug dealers have repeatedly cut holes all up and through Trump’s border wall by using commercially available power tools, opening gaps large enough for people and drug loads to pass through. U.S. agents have reportedly confirmed “multiple breaches” to sections of the wall. Smugglers are easily using cheap saws to cut holes in the base of the wall and then are able to push the 18- to 30-feet tall posts to the side, making it possible for people and contraband to go through the structure. Officials are dumbfounded after Trump proclaimed the wall “virtually impenetrable”. But smugglers are finding ways to easily get through, whether it be climbing lower sections with makeshift ladders or by cutting holes in weak points of the structures.

B eauty entrepreneur Courtney Adeleye —the woman behind the brand The Mane Choice—has broken barriers in entrepreneurship and her 5-year-old daughter is following in her footsteps. According to Black Enterprise , Adeleye’s daughter Lily Adeleye recently became the youngest CEO to have her company’s products sold at Target. “Being the first Mother/Daughter duo to hit shelves in one of the largest retail stores in the world is still surreal to us. It’s history.” @CourtneyAdeleye https://t.co/2I57JcL8j3 — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) November 1, 2019 With the help of her mother, the youngster cultivated a brand dubbed Lily Frilly. The brand was created to empower young girls. Lily Frilly sells a variety of products including backpacks, dresses, lunchboxes and bows which can now be found at Target. “From the time Lily was 3, I knew then she had a business mindset. At an early age, as she watched me build a successful business from the ground up, it exposed her to many possibilities and goals, so with that, we didn’t wait until she was an adult to help her pursue them,” Adeleye told the news outlet. “Many people don’t understand the importance of instilling ‘the NOW’ into children. Not in all situations do you have to wait until you’re older to pursue your dreams. Lily Frilly believes that children have the ability to meet their full potential at an early age and we hope people see our story as an inspiration to be innovative and step outside of the box.” The mother-daughter-duo is also using the brand as an avenue to create spaces for mothers and their children to connect by hosting kid-friendly networking and empowerment events. Young Black entrepreneurs are landing major deals with national retailers. 12-year-old business owner Gabrielle Goodwin —who founded GaBBY Bows— landed a deal with Target to have her products sold at 74 of their stores across the country. Earlier this year, 18-year-old beauty entrepreneur Zandra Cunningham inked a deal with the retailer to sell her brand’s beauty box in their stores. Vicki Gunvalson Sues Kelly Dodd: That Loser Defamed Me!

We have some real drama between two cast members on The Real Housewives of Orange County. We’re talking about some real serious legal drama here. In a surprising turn of events, Vicki Gunvalson has filed a lawsuit against her fellow Bravo colleague, Kelly Dodd, accusing her rival of making defamatory statements toward her. According to documents filed on November 1, Gunvalson is irate over allegations hurled in her direction by Dodd, most notably such quotes as: You prey on older people , You are a con woman  and You engaged in fraud . Initially, Vicki included Bravo and its parent company, NBCUniversal, in the complaint — but she later dismissed both the network and the company from the lawsuit. We’ve obviously heard of plenty of Real Housewives getting all angry over what someone else said on air or in some interview about her. But this is the time we’ve heard of actual legal action being taken in response. The 57-year old Coto Insurance CEO claims the allegations Dodd made are false and that they could “damage her reputation and livelihood,” negatively affecting her career outside of the series if the network airs them on national television at any point in the future. To be clear, the episode during which Dodd says these things about her foe has not yet aired. Gunvalson is seeking an injunctive relief and damages, stating that she doesn’t want the entire episode to be pulled from the air. However, she is demanding that producers remove the remarks Kelly made about Vicki being a “con woman” from the installment in question. This lawsuit, of course, is brand new. But tension between Vicki and Kelly has been lingering for several months. Dodd told Us Weekly in August that she will “never, ever, ever” be friends with Vicki after she accused her of doing cocaine during season 13. Kelly pushed for Vicki to be fired at the time. “I think that she uses everybody as a story line. She doesn’t really have anything in her life,” Kelly said last year, adding: “You know, her kids are gone, her grandkids are gone. It’s just her — what are we going to watch her and [fiancé] Steve [Lodge] drink wine on the couch?” Gunvalson was demoted to a “friend” role for season 14. But this didn’t stop her and Dodd from engaging in several arguments . “If Kelly had a job and went to work every day like I do, she wouldn’t have time to constantly throw stones at others,” Vicki said in August. “She really needs to worry about herself.” We can also now confirm that The Real Housewives of Orange County reunion will be filmed next Friday, November is 8. Both Dodd and Gunvalson are expected to attend. View Slideshow: Kelly Dodd: Vicki Gunvalson is a Freaking Psycho Pig Bish C–t!!

Brooklyn Residents Protest By Hopping The Turnstiles After Multiple Instances Of Police Brutality On The Subway

Source: Alberto Reyes/WENN.com / WENN New York City Is Fighting Back Against The New Subway Procedures Say what you want about New York , but the people there will always fight for what they believe in. Hundreds of New Yorkers gathered in Downtown Brooklyn on Friday night to protest against the aggressive policing of the subway system. Approximately 1,000 demonstrators marched across the main avenues to protest, according to reports from PIX11 . One chant included protestors yelling, “hands off black kids, NYPD,” responding to the recent incidents of police brutality. People working two, three jobs, barely keeping a roof over their head,” one protester told NY1 . “And what’s the city’s response? Hire more cops. Beat people up who can’t afford to pay the fare.” During these protests, no arrests were made, although there were some reported acts of vandalism. These demonstrations occurred just days after videos showing NYPD officers using excessive force on train stations went viral. One of the videos showed NYPD pointing their guns at a young man who was sitting in a packed subway car. Other passengers flee as the teenager puts his hands up in the air and asks someone to call his mom. A few moments later, a group of officers stormed the car, throwing the teen on the ground and placing him in cuffs–all because he allegedly skipped the MTA’s $2.75 fare .
