Cee Lo Talks ‘Thank You,’ New Version Of ‘Forget You’ For Firefighters

‘I connect with it very, very personally because my mother was a fireman,’ he says of raising money for volunteer fire, EMS and rescue services. By Matt Elias Cee Lo Green Photo: MTV News It’s not too often that a Grammy-winning song gets completely overhauled for a national campaign, but Cee Lo Green has done just that with “Forget You” — and it’s all for a good cause. The R&B crooner teamed up with Duracell’s “Power of Those Who Protect Us” program to benefit the National Volunteer Fire Council, a nonprofit group representing the interests of volunteer fire, EMS and rescue services. The new tune, renamed “Thank You,” is available for free download via Duracell’s Facebook page . Not only is Cee Lo hoping to raise awareness for America’s volunteer firefighters, but it’s a cause that hits close to home. “It’s a very noble cause, and I connect with it very, very personally because my mother was a fireman as well — one of the first black female firemen in Atlanta, Georgia, so quite a historic accomplishment,” Green said. Of course The Lady Killer was tasked with cleaning up his decidedly dirty lyrics from the original song for this tribute. The new chorus begins: “For a lifetime of service in the name of love, we wanna thank you/ I could say it a thousand times and it wouldn’t be enough, we wanna thank you for everything you do.” Green, who is currently a coach on NBC’s “The Voice,” said this campaign capitalizes on the current success of “Forget You.” “It’s definitely at the height of a popularity, you know, just kind of unparalleled, and so it’s a convenient means of kind of making use of it and using that same spotlight to acknowledge and expose what a great humanitarian cause this is,” he told MTV News. “For so many people, citizens to volunteer themselves — so this is voluntary action. It’s not by force, it’s not by draft. This is heart and soul, and we appreciate that.” What do you think of Cee Lo’s “Thank You”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Cee Lo Green

Mumford & Sons Announce Summer Tour Dates

The band’s June jaunt will follow their vintage rail car tour of the U.S. kicking off in April. By James Montgomery Mumford & Sons Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Mumford & Sons are perhaps the most unconventional British act to break through in the States in quite some time, so it made sense when they announced an equally unconventional Railroad Revival Tour last month. That jaunt will see them, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show travel from show to show (and slowly through the Southwest) using only vintage trains … a nod to the barnstorming days of old. And, in an age of mobile-phone-sponsored mega-tours, it is a rather unique idea, to say the very least. Of course, their fans responded to the news quickly, and since most of the Railroad Revival dates are already sold out, Mumford have announced another run of U.S. shows, though these are of the more traditional variety (i.e., they will not be traveling via the power of the locomotive). Their new tour kicks off June 3 in Kansas City, Missouri, and runs until June 16, when they’ll conclude a two-night stand at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. Support for the trek will come from a number of bands, including Matthew & the Atlas, Nathaniel Rateliff, Cake and the Low Anthem. Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, April 8, through Mumford’s official site . Mumford’s Railroad Revival Tour gets under way April 21 in Oakland, California, and wraps on April 27 in New Orleans. On April 13, the band will be in New York to film an episode of VH1’s “Unplugged,” and they’ll play the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 16, along with the likes of Kanye West, the Kings of Leon and the Arcade Fire. Mumford & Sons summer tour dates, according to the band’s website:

‘The Hobbit’ Casts ‘Flight Of The Conchords’ Star Bret McKenzie

McKenzie had small roles in first and third ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. By Gil Kaufman Bret McKenzie Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Gettu Images It’s “Business Time” for Bret McKenzie. After showing up briefly as an extra in the first and third “Lord of the Rings” movies, the “Flight of the Conchords” co-star has joined the sprawling cast of Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” prequels. And the New Zealand native won’t have to travel far, since once again Jackson has set up shop in his home country for the films, which began filming two weeks ago. Variety reported that McKenzie will play the role of Lindir, an elf of Rivendell, in the 3-D films, which will be shot over the next 14 months at a studio in Wellington and other locations around New Zealand. McKenzie joins a cast that already features Martin Freeman in the lead role of Bilbo Baggins, as well as returning “Rings” vets Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Andy Serkis . “The Hobbit” is set 60 years before “LOTR” and follows the adventures of humble hobbit Bilbo, who rises to heroic stature as he leads a group of fellow dwarves on an epic journey to reclaim a treasure from the dragon Smaug. With the “Conchords” on permanent hiatus after wrapping their second season of the show on HBO in 2009, McKenzie was freed up to join the “Hobbit” cast. Some movie sites have already begun speculating that given his higher profile now, McKenzie may have a beefier part than the three seconds of screen time he had in “The Fellowship of the Ring” during the Council of Elrond. After that appearance, fans began referring to his character as “Figwit,” which stands for “Frodo is great … who is that?” McKenzie’s wife, Hannah, even made a short documentary about the Figwit phenomenon that she submitted to the Auckland International Film Festival in 2004. The “Conchords” also paid homage to McKenzie’s star turn in season one with the song “Frodo, Don’t Wear the Ring.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . SMH: Bloody Pig’s Foot And Anti-Semitic Ramblings Sent To NY Republican Rep Peter King For His Anti-Muslim Antics

Authorities intercepted a parcel this morning addressed to Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) containing a bloody pig’s foot and a derogatory message , a source has confirmed to CBS News. The parcel was intercepted at the Congressional mail facility in Landover, Maryland, where mail sent to lawmakers is screened for security risks. The U.S. Capitol Police and U.S. Postal Service confirmed that there is an open investigation, though would not confirm the details of what was contained in the parcel because the investigation is ongoing. King’s office, which did not see the parcel, referred all questions to the Capitol Police. According to the Postal Service, a hazardous materials response team tested the parcel and found it to be non-hazardous. Last month, King held hearings on radicalization in the Muslim-American community that critics suggested unfairly targeted Muslims, though it’s not known whether this incident is related to those hearings. Muslims are forbidden from eating pork products. Ibrahim Hooper, National Communications Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations – a target of King’s hearings – said he found the situation confusing. He said his organization regularly receives pig-themed hate messages, including letters smeared with bacon. “My guess is it was an anti-Muslim bigot, and bigots not being brain surgeons they probably got their signals crossed,” he said. A source on Capitol Hill told NBC News that the note “contained anti-Semitic ramblings” and referenced the radicalization hearings. King is Roman Catholic. Wow. Well the bloody pig’s feet package never made it to New York, but we’re pretty sure this guy will continuously get stuff like this… Source

Child Support Rears It’s Ugly Head: ‘Do-Gooder’ City Councilman Wanted For Over $20k In Back Payments

Now, this here is just embarrassing. City councilman Ruben Wills boasts an impressive do-gooder resume: founding a basketball league for neighborhood youth, running a nonprofit group to help single mothers. What he doesn’t mention is that he has two outstanding arrest warrants for pending criminal cases, a Daily News investigation has found. Or that he’s a deadbeat dad who faces a civil warrant for nonpayment of child support. State tax officials said as of Feb.7, he owed $27,493. Saturday, Wills admitted he was aware of the two outstanding criminal bench warrants on cases in Manhattan and Long Island that date back several years, and apologized for not addressing them before being elected to serve his district. “There is no excuse,” he wrote in an email response to the News. “While these events are more than 10 years old, I take full responsibility and I have taken steps to remedy the situation.” Last fall, Wills, 39, beat out a crowded field to win the office held by the late Thomas White, which represents a large working-class swath of Jamaica, Queens. On his Council website biography, he says he became an “entrepreneur” at 21, starting “a home contracting business which became a center of opportunity for young adults, the formerly incarcerated, and other at-risk residents of the community to acquire the job skills necessary to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and prison.” Wills’ home contracting work appears to be where he ran into trouble with the law, a review of court and other records found. In both cases, law enforcement officials said, Wills could turn himself in and resolve his pending charges. They also point out none of the charges is a felony. It’s also remarkable that the existence of the arrest warrants has never been discovered before, given that Wills used to work for the state Senate and was the subject of a recent glowing profile in The New York Times. Yesterday, Wills declined to discuss details of the arrests, instead issuing a statement through his campaign spokeswoman, Lupe Todd. “These misdemeanor cases stem from business disputes years ago and I am regretful that I did not properly address them when they occurred. This was truly an oversight as it was my belief that these matters had been finalized. Nevertheless this was poor judgment on my part in failing to follow up on the full disposition of these matters.” Regarding the child support he owes, Todd said the civil warrant regarding the $27,000 refers to back payments Wills is contesting in court. She said Wills has been making regular payments starting with the date paternity was established. Wills “pays the monthly requirement of approximately $346 plus an additional $250 which goes against the arrears which are currently in litigation,” she said. SMH. Source

US/UN Military Action In Libya Could Start As Early As Sunday

Now that Moammar Gadhafi has closed off the airspace around Libya and threatened to hit the people with a “final assault,” the U.N. has voted to take “all necessary means” to protect the people of Libya. The U.N. Security Council resolution was approved late Thursday with the backing of the United States, France and Britain, hours after Gadhafi vowed to launch a final assault and crush the nearly 5-week-old rebellion against him. President Barack Obama telephoned the leaders of Britain and France after the vote, the White House said. U.S. officials speaking after a closed-door briefing in Congress said the attempt to ground Gadhafi’s air force could begin by Sunday or Monday with the use of jet fighters, bombers and surveillance aircraft. The British Cabinet held an emergency meeting as British planes were expected to take part in the international military action. NATO envoys in Brussels also were considering next steps. Military experts cautioned that the consequences of such action are unpredictable. The former head of the British army, Richard Dannatt, said it was crucial to proceed cautiously “so we don’t get into the kind of situation that we got into in Iraq by not having a Plan B for the morning after.” But the Western powers faced pressure to act urgently after weeks spent deliberation over what to do about Gadhafi as his regime gained momentum. Gadhafi, calling in to Libyan television on Thursday, said his forces would “rescue” the people of Benghazi, the eastern Mediterranean port city that has become the de-facto rebel capital and staging ground. For those who resist, Gadhafi said, there would be “no mercy or compassion.” “This is your happy day, we will destroy your enemies,” he said, warning the people of Benghazi not to stand alongside the opposition. “Prepare for this moment to get rid of the traitors. Tomorrow we will show the world, to see if the city is one of traitors or heroes.” Gadhafi also pledged to respond harshly to U.N.-sponsored attacks in an interview with Portuguese television broadcast just before the vote. “If the world is crazy,” he said, “we will be crazy, too.” That should end any doubt you might have as to whether or not this dude is a nutjob. Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim struck a more conciliatory tone, offering to negotiate a cease-fire with the rebels. He welcomed the Security Council’s concern for the people of Libya but called on the world not to allow them to receive weapons. “If any countries do that, they will be inviting Libyans to kill each other,” he said. The civil unrest in Libya started a little over a month ago. And the death toll is somewhere between 150 or over 1,000 people, depending on whether you ask Gadhafi or the rebels. Source

L.A. Reid, Enrique Iglesias Reportedly Tapped For ‘X Factor’

Announcement regarding judges expected this week. By Jocelyn Vena Enrique Iglesias Photo: Kristian Dowling/ WireImage With names like Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger all still floating around as possible judges, multiple sources are confirming that music executive L.A. Reid will be one of the judges on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” when it premieres this fall. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that “it’s a done deal.” Simon Cowell told MTV News earlier this week that an announcement regarding the judges on the show would be made “within the week.” Reid will reportedly be let out of his contract with Universal Music early and may take a position with Sony Music, who will provide the show’s winner a recording contract in addition to the $5 million cash prize. Sources confirmed Reid’s departure to Billboard . In addition to the news that Reid is joining the show, there’s talk that Enrique Iglesias has been approached to host the reality singing competition, according to Deadline Hollywood . Iglesias reportedly was interested in becoming a judge rather than the host of the show, but with his own music career as red hot as ever, he may choose to stick with performing. A rep for the show had no comment regarding the rumors when contacted by MTV News. Reid’s involvement would make sense, given what Cowell shared with us regarding what he wants in the judges on the panel. “I’ve got to have people on the panel with me who can judge American talent because I’m 51 years old, I’m British and we’ve got people as young as 14 entering this competition. So I’ve got to make sure I’ve got people sitting alongside me who genuinely know what they’re talking about so that we don’t lose somebody in the audition process.” Related Artists Enrique Iglesias
