Pakistan and The Taliban, Sitting In A Tree

A new report issued by the London School of Economics has claimed that Pakistan’s intelligence agency is not only funding and training Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, but also that it also holds sway in the insurgency’s leadership council. The assertion that Pakistan’s “Inter-Services Intelligence” has ties to the Taliban is not new, but the scope of the relationship, the report’s author claims, could be damaging as the U.S. continues to court Pakitsan’s support. —JCL The LA Times: Pakistan’s powerful intelligence agency not only funds and trains Taliban insurgents fighting U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, but also maintains its own representation on the insurgency’s leadership council, claims a new report issued by the London School of Economics. Assertions that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, continues to nurture links with the Afghan Taliban are not new. But the scope of that relationship claimed by the report’s author, Matt Waldman, is startling and could prove damaging to the fragile alliance Washington is trying to foster with Pakistan, its military establishment, and its weak civilian government led by President Asif Ali Zardari. Waldman, a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, based his assertions on interviews with nine Afghan Taliban commanders as well as with Afghan and Western security officials. The report claims that it is official Pakistan governmental policy to support the Taliban’s insurgency in Afghanistan, and that the ISI has a strong voice on the Quetta Shura, the Afghan Taliban’s leadership council, named after the southern Pakistani city believed to serve as the council’s haven. How to Solve the World’s Toilet Crisis

According the U.S. State Department, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF, the world's greatest infectious killer is not malaria, AIDS, or TB, but poop. An estimated 2.6 billion people, about 40% of the world's population, including 1 billion children, have no access to toilets of any kind and must practice open defecation. The result is a continual pandemic of intestinal afflictions that kill 2 million people a year. In this episode of Vanguard, Adam Yamaguchi travels to India and Indonesia to see how the toiletless world deals with poop. It's in the streets, in the fields and, most dangerously, in the very water from which they drink. When it doesn't go down the toilet, poop is everywhere. Adam travels to India and Singapore to investigate what's being done to curb this silent epidemic. “The World's Toilet Crisis” airs Wednesday, June 9 at 10/9c. Soccer Academies’ Ugly Side

The new cover story in The New York Times Magazine, “How a Soccer Star is Made,” is a long and detailed article about the intense training that has grown up around youth soccer academies in Europe and what American soccer organizations can learn from their way of doing what has become very big business. [Dutch soccer team] Ajax puts young players into a competitive caldron, a culture of constant improvement in which they either survive and advance or are discarded. It is not what most would regard as a child-friendly environment, but it is one that sorts out the real prodigies — those capable of playing at an elite international level — from the merely gifted. From a very early age — sometimes even before a boy has even started school — these players’ careers are contracted, licensed and traded — or in the typical parlance of the sport, bought and sold. As the New York Times reports: No one pretends that its business is other than what it is. “We sold Wesley Sneijder for a ridiculous amount of money,” [trainer Olav] Versloot said. “We can go on for years based on what he was sold for.” … [British team] Fulham, like Ajax, is often a seller of talent. It recently sold a 20-year-old to Manchester United for seven million pounds, or more than $10 million. “It’s a little ugly talking about the financial terms,” [Coach Huw] Jennings said. “I don’t like to do it. It feels not too far off from the slave trade.” With an estimated 10,000 boys being trained by clubs in England alone, the demand for young players — in quantity, at least — may be greater than the number of interested UK youth. Jennings said that his scouts, in response to the “unsuitability of the indigenous population of Britain” — children who are too sedentary and spend their time with video games — were increasingly focused “on the inner city of London, among Africans, Eastern Europeans and Caribbeans.” Even Drogba’s injury, which may keep him out of the World Cup, won’t stop poor boys who grew up playing soccer in dirt fields from wanting to be like him. For an upcoming episode of Vanguard, “Soccer’s Lost Boys,” I travelled to Africa and Europe to examine the dark side of this growing network of recruitment, and to track down the ambitious young African players whose dreams make them an easy target for shady scouts. Unlike European academies where players pay very little to train, these kids’ families are bilked of their meager savings with promises that their boys could be the next Drogba. What happens after that—boys abandoned along the way, often without any money, papers, or ability to return home to their families—is the tragic, ugly underbelly of the beautiful game. Christian coalition complains Comedy Central’s ‘JC’ offensive

A Christian coalition is complaining Comedy Central's “JC”, a proposed animated series about Jesus Christ living in modern-day New York, is offensive and discriminatory towards Christians. The only problem is that the Coalition Against Religious Bigotry has yet to see a pilot or script, since “JC” is still in development, and might not even find its way on to the cable channel. The Coalition Against Religious Bigotry (CARB) includes right-wing theocrats Brent Bozell (president, Media Research Center), Tony Perkins (president, Family Research Council), Michael Medved (talk radio host), Bill Donohue (president, Catholic League) and Tim Winter (president, Parents Television Council). http://www.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2010m6d3-Christian-c… added by: unimatrix0

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Joins Los Angeles City’s Boycott on Arizona

L.A. County supervisors join city's AZ boycott Tuesday, June 01, 2010 DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted to join the city's economic boycott of Arizona over the new immigration law. The L.A. City Council already voted to boycott the state because of Arizona's new immigration law. Supervisors Gloria Molina and Zev Yaroslavsky say there is no question that America's immigration system is broken, but they believe Arizona's new law is a violation of American civil rights. Molina and Yaroslavsky introduced a motion asking Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona to repeal SB 1070. The motion also directs the county to review all investments in Arizona, such as state municipal bonds, and to suspend travel to Arizona for county business. The motion passed by a vote of 3 to 2. The Board of Supervisors willl also send a letter to President Barack Obama and Congress, asking them to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Supervisor Don Knabe said boycotting Arizona is a misguided reaction to a bad law, while Supervisor Mike Antonovich called the motion “stupid.” “It doesn't make sense, it doesn't follow the law,” Antonovich said. “All Arizona is doing is following federal law and that is also California state law.” Supervisor Knabe released a written statement saying he also wouldn't support the motion. “Los Angeles County is currently facing tremendous fiscal challenges with our own dysfunctional state government, which we are attempting to work through. This motion takes away from these efforts, and will distract from what we are elected to do for the residents of this county,” Knabe's statement read. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was the deciding vote on the issue. The LAUSD Board of Education is also joining the list of those opposing Arizona's law. The board will consider on Tuesday a resolution condemning the law and curtailing economic support of Arizona, introduced by board president Monica Garcia. The resolution would urge students and their parents to be aware of the law, which authorizes Arizona police to question someone's immigration status when there is suspicion that the person may be in the state illegally. added by: EthicalVegan

Spectacular Green Roof Installed At Toronto City Hall

All photos by Lloyd Alter When Viljo Revell designed Toronto City Hall back in the sixties, the podium roof was for grand entries; you could drive up the ramp and walk right into the Council Chambers. It never quite worked out that way and was pretty much ignored for years. Not any more; this weekend Mayor Miller cut the ribbon on a spectacular new green roof. The normally reserved Lisa Rochon rav… Read the full story on TreeHugger
