High And Low: The Heights Of Hitchcock And An Overlooked Gem By ‘Bridesmaids’ Director Paul Feig

It’s Hitchcock in the morning, Hitchcock in the evening,   Hitchcock at supper time given the upcoming Hitchcock movie, the recently-aired HBO flick The Girl , Blu-Ray releases of Dial “M” for Murder (in 3D!) and Strangers on a Train , and now a sumptuous new collection of the Master of Suspense’s work.  On the other end of the spectrum is a kids’ holiday movie that never got the acclaim it deserved — but now that director Paul Feig has gone on to make a little film called Bridesmaids , maybe it has a shot at cult status. HIGH: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Universal Studios Home Entertainment; Blu-Ray $299.98) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: This impressive set features 15 films directed by the Master of Suspense. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Hitchcock plied his trade at a number of movie studios over the years, so this is hardly a complete retrospective of his legendary career. That said, Universal offers a sumptuous array of some of his best movies (and a few that aren’t the greatest). Recent Sight & Sound magazine chart-topper Vertigo pops up, alongside such cherished classics as  Psycho , North by Northwest and The Birds . The box set also includes such lesser-known but equally unforgettable films  Shadow of a Doubt , Frenzy , Rope , Marnie and Saboteur . WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: Hitchcock’s career is notable for more than his directorial talent. After David O. Selznick brought him to the U.S., Hitchcock became one of the most successful Hollywood filmmakers of his time. Then the French film critics who later started the New Wave, made the case that Hitch wasn’t merely a genre director but rather an artist and auteur . He scored a trifecta of sorts when the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV show, featuring his droll wrap-arounds, made him a household name in this country in a way few directors ever accomplish. All three Hitchcocks — the journeyman, the visionary and the self-promoter — are on display here. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): Only a few of these titles have been previously available on Blu-Ray, and there are enough extras here to stun an ox, from audio excerpts of the famous Hitchcock/Truffaut interviews to trailers and documentaries. Leonard Maltin even pops up to provide a defense for one of my least-favorite Hitchcock movies, Topaz. If anyone’s going to make me rethink a film, it’s Maltin. LOW: Unaccompanied Minors (Warner Home Video; DVD Double Feature with Dennis the Menace Christmas $12.97) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written by Jacob Meszaros and Mya Stark, based on the story by Susan Burton; directed by Paul Feig; starring Dyllan Christopher, Gina Mantegna, Lewis Black, Wilmer Valderrama. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Spencer (Christopher) and his younger sister Katie (Dominique Saldaña) are flying on their own — “unaccompanied minors,” in airline-speak — to spend the holidays with their father when they get snowed in at a Midwestern airport. Big brother and a bunch of other solo-traveling youngsters must outsmart the airport’s Christmas-hating manager (Black) to make sure Katie gets her present from Santa. WHY IT’S FUN: OK, yes, it sounds like your typical Home Alone rip-off, but Unaccompanied Minors deftly mixes youthful angst (they’re all the children of divorce) and hilarious hijinks in a way you’d expect from Feig, the creator of Freaks and Geeks . As with his critically-acclaimed NBC series, Feig has a great eye for casting the kids (the juvenile cast includes Brett Kelly from Bad Santa and Everybody Hates Chris ’ Tyler James Williams). He also loads the cast with a team of comedic all-stars that includes Teri Garr (as a woman whose holiday decorations are so aggressive that they scare passers-by), Rob Corddry, Sandra Tsing Loh, Mindy Kaling, B.J. Novak, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, Dave “Gruber” Allen and three of The Kids in the Hall. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT: If you’ve got kids you need to keep entertained this holiday season, or if you want to check out a comic gem that was mostly ignored at the time of its release, this one’s absolutely worth picking up. Jessica-Jane Clement’s Hotness Is Nuts!

This is what I love about British magazines: instead of taking boring celebrities and trying to turn them into lingerie models like we do, they take lingerie models and try to turn them into celebrities. It might not always work, but you can’t argue with the results. Like these awesome pictures of Jessica-Jane Clement in Nuts . This chick may not be a household name, but that’s only because husbands and boyfriends across the country have to pretend they don’t recognize her to avoid spending a night on the couch. The Loneliest Planet Journeys With Young Lovers & Revolution

In Julia Loktev ‘s The Loneliest Planet , Gael García Bernal and relative newcomer Hani Furstenberg ( Yossi & Jagger ) play a young engaged couple backpacking through the Caucasus Mountains in the former Soviet republic of Georgia the summer before their wedding. Their stunning journey is guided by a local villager, but the vast terrain crowds an emotional upheaval that threatens to tear down their promising life together. Loktev spoke with ML about her own visit to the country that inspired the film which has won praise at festivals this year and is headed into theatrical and VOD release this weekend. The making of The Loneliest Planet was a journey unto itself though everyone on board were determined to make it all happen. “The shoot was basically like an expedition,” Loktev told ML. “We were based in a village, but a lot of the time we camped. We’d have to get up in the darkness and carry everything on our backs so we could get to our location to get the early morning light. It was sometimes scary…” Loktev first conceived of what would become The Loneliest Planet while traveling in Georgia with a boyfriend. She was off to a film festival there and he planned to bike through the country as well as neighboring Armenia. After one week, their relationship was over and they went separate ways. While on a long bus ride to the capital, Tbilisi, she conceived the story that would eventually take the form of Alex (García Bernal) and Nica (Furstenberg). Travel binds the pair who willingly take on cultural disjointedness, mastering key phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” “please,” “how much?” “cheers” etc. They are comfortable with each other and their shared love of travel. But one fleeting moment could wreak havoc on their future. Their guide (played by local mountaineering hero Bidzina Gujabidze) is with them every step of the way. The couple are haunted with an unsaid tension, but cannot verbalize anything. “I tried to have a natural situation unfold,” said Loktev. “For me, this was a situation in which this couple couldn’t talk about this thing that existed between them. The things that could be said are almost too obvious to be said. So what was interesting to me was how this couple could communicate when they really can’t communicate… This couple is going through the biggest crisis in their relationship while they’re traveling with this guide who is now with them in this vastness. The parallel would be having a fight with your lover or friend and you now have to go out to dinner with someone together. You can’t really work things out in that moment.” An international actor who has worked with veteran filmmakers from North and South America and Europe, García Bernal took on the role of Alex early on. He told Loktev he had a fascination for the Caucasus region since grade school after reading Lermontov’s Hero of Our Time . “Gael has an easy masculinity. He has a playful quality and he’s able to bring all those qualities to his character,” said Loktev. “And I was interested in him doing something in which he couldn’t rely on words so much as doing something very interior and very subtle.” Financing dramas nearly pulled the production away from Georgia to an isolated region in China when a producer from the country offered to give resources after an initial investor pulled out. Loktev traveled to China, saying she was trying to “find Georgia in China,” but then sudden political strife in the area quickly closed down any chance of shooting there. “They had riots that were some of the biggest in years and then the Chinese government cut off internet and cell phone access,” recalled Loctev. “We couldn’t get in touch with people and from there it ended up screwing our production. The last thing they needed was an American crew making a film. That fell apart and I came back from China just devastated. I wasn’t sure if we were going to have to wait another year. But lucky both Gael and Hani stuck with it and the movie ended up where it’s supposed to be – in Georgia.” After finding more financing through Germany and America, Loktev headed to Georgia. The region had had its own conflict in recent years. The short but devastating war between Russia and Georgia came just as Loktev initially scouted the country for her shoot some years before actual production commenced. “Gael joked with me that if I went to scout a location in Switzerland, that they’d have a revolution there. [laughs] I just bring trouble [more laughs] But luckily, by the time we got there, things had stabilized,” said Loktev. “There was still an uneasy peace though. We were in this strange border town about 10 kilometers from Russia. And the border couldn’t be crossed.” [ Sundance Selects roles out The Loneliest Planet in limited theatrical release this weekend followed by other cities. It’s also available via On Demand]

Florida Fawkery: Black And Hispanic Sunshine State Residents Receive Fake Papers Telling Them They Can’t Vote

SMH! Immigrant Florida Voters Told They Can’t Vote Residents in 23 Florida counties report getting letters questioning their citizenship. Via Loop 21 : Residents in Florida have reported getting official-looking letters telling them that their citizenship is in question. The letters are fake, but they have gone out to predominately Republican voters where GOP officials have led efforts to keep those who are not citizens from registering to vote. The letters have been reported in 23 counties so far and Department of State spokesman Chris Cate said it looks like an attempt to intimidate voters. Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who pushed for the purge of noncitizens in the state, said Florida has “zero tolerance” for voter intimidation. “Anytime anybody’s trying to prevent somebody from voting that’s a serious issue,” Scott said. “We’ll get to the bottom of it. We’ll turn over any violations of law to law enforcement. I expect law enforcement to prosecute those individuals.” Florida’s Cubans, about half of the Latino population in the state, typically vote Republican. New Cuban immigrants also can become legal residents and US citizens simply by getting to the country because of the so-called “wet foot, dry foot” policy. This is just ridiculous! People want to keep “certain” demographics from voting this election year, only because they realize how powerful our voice is. How to report fake letters : Escambia County: Any voter who receives such a letter in Escambia County should retain the envelope and all contents, and call the Escambia County Supervisor of Elections office at 595-3900 to report it. Santa Rosa County: If anyone in Santa Rosa receives such a letter, call the Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections office at 983-1900.
