First Look: ‘Skyfall’ Raises Bond Franchise To New Heights

Director Sam Mendes  and screenwriters, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan have done a very wily thing for James Bond’s 50th anniversary: They’ve given 007  a midlife crisis. The trauma takes root during the white-knuckle opening of  Skyfall , the best film so far of Daniel Craig ‘s run as Ian Fleming’s suave super spy and one of the best of the Bond franchise. After chasing his quarry by motorcycle over the rooftops of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and piloting an earth mover over a speeding train to keep his target from escaping, a wounded Bond loses the battle, and, it appears, his life. But since the movie has only just started, there’s not much doubt that he will back after the eerie-but-dreamy titles sequence set to Adele’s lush theme song . ‘ When he appears on screen again, Bond’s in paradise and presumed dead in the U.K. His wounds have healed, except for the big psychic gash that has him drinking shots while balancing a riled scorpion on his wrist for sport. Alas, even paradise has CNN and, soon, Bond is learning from Wolf Blitzer that MI6’s headquarters have been bombed and it’s time for him to return to the service of his country. Except it’s not as easy as that. After Mike Myers strip-mined the Bond franchise for his Austin Powers parodies, the Bond writers take a cue from The Spy Who Shagged Me and explore the idea: what would happen if James Bond lost his mojo?  Although Craig’s chiseled body does not exactly cooperate with the plotline, he does the best acting of his career playing a supremely confident man grappling with the onset of doubt: doubt in himself, doubt in his work and doubt in his superiors, who with the exception of M  (played once again with stately grit by Judi Dench), seem to be of the mind that 007 has passed his sell by date. But, shaky as his trigger hand may be, 007 is not going down without a fight. There’s a wonderful scene in the National Gallery in London where Bond meets the new Q, who turns out to be an insouciant young whippersnapper played by the excellent Ben Whishaw.  As man and boy genius stare at J.M.W. Turner’s painting The Fighting Téméraire’ tugged to her last Berth to be broken up,  Q sets the tone by describing the image as a “grand old warship being ignominiously hauled away to scrap.”   He then boasts that he can accomplish more while working his laptop at home “in my pajamas.”  Guys like Bond, he implies, are only still around because “Every now and then a trigger has to be pulled.” “Or not pulled,” 007 replies before going in for the kill.  “It’s hard to know when you’re in your pajamas.” Craig’s searing, stoic performance is beautifully complemented by Javier Bardem’s flamboyant turn as Silva, a former MI6 operative and computer genius who has stolen the list of every NATO agent embedded in enemy camps across the globe and is slowly blowing their covers. Bardem vaults into the pantheon of Bond villains by playing Silva as a bleach-blonde, computer savvy Anton Chigurh, who appears to have a thing for Bond. Even more remarkable, when Silva reveals this attraction to his bound former colleague by caressing his chest, 007  coolly alludes that it wouldn’t be the first time he’s gotten it on with a guy. Silva has a different kind of hard-on for M, who turns out to be the reason he has hatched his evil plan, which, like the rest of the movie, is more plausible and human-scale than a lot of the world-domination hoo-ha that has taken place in previous Bond films. “Think on your sins,” is the warning message that Silva repeatedly sends M, and when he eventually recounts the blood-curdling turn of events that led him to turn his back on his country, it’s difficult not to have some empathy for him. Skyfall  has most of the familiar ingredients of Bond film — beautiful women, sleek cars — the Aston Martin DB5 makes a cameo appearance that will be talked about for a long time — memorable villains and intense action scenes. And yet, the movie is also full of surprises, small and pivotal. You won’t find me spilling any of them though. Not unless martinis are involved. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Churches Defy The IRS With Plans To Screen ’2016: Obama’s America’

That controversial documentary is back in the headlines again , and it’s all because some well-known mega-churches plan to hold screenings of the film in the coming weeks! According to The Hollywood Reporter : A handful of churches already have signed on before the filmmakers even started to market the initiative. One of them, the influential mega-church Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, licensed the film for $299 and will show it to an expected 500 congregants Saturday, and Calvary Chapel Downey did likewise for the following Saturday. Neither church responded to an interview request from The Hollywood Reporter. According the IRS code, 501(c)(3) organizations, including churches, are restricted from electioneering, which includes actively supporting or opposing one presidential candidate over another. But organizations have been known to challenge such boundaries. Conservatives, for example, routinely question whether the self-described “progressive” organization Media Matters for America is deserving of its tax-exempt status. The law is murky, too, as applied to churches. Pastors are allowed to endorse candidates on a personal level and even lend their names to candidates for use in political ads, as long as the church is left out of the equation. This week, for example, the Rev. Billy Graham met with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and told him that he would do “all I can” to help him win, and Graham had no problem with the campaign dstributing photos of the meeting and speaking to reporters about the de facto endorsement. Some conservative churches want the same partisan privileges that individuals such as Graham enjoy, so they have been purposely flaunting the law, arguing that liberal-oriented churches get away with partisan behavior all the time. One popular refrain, for example, is that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago were firmly behind Obama’s presidential run in 2008, so why should any church be prevented from supporting Romney in 2012? Last Sunday, hundreds of conservative preachers across the country participated in Pulpit Freedom Sunday, an event staged once a year since 2008 whereby church leaders endorse political candidates and positions. Organized by Alliance Defending Freedom, its goal is to force a response from the IRS so that the issue can be resolved in a court of law, said the group’s senior legal counsel Erik Stanley. “The 58-year-old Johnson Amendment in the tax code — which is what the IRS uses to restrict what pastors can and cannot say from the pulpit — is unconstitutional,” Stanley said. Naturally, some liberals disagree. Two days ahead of Pulpit Freedom Sunday, Brendan Kiley, who has written for Newsweek and the Forward, wrote at TheStranger.com that “over a thousand American preachers are going to strike a craven blow against the separation of church and state and doll it up as if they’re doing liberty and the First Amendment a favor.” Dinesh d’Souza, the star and co-director of 2016, told The Hollywood Reporter that churches should not fear the IRS if they screen his movie. “The last time I checked we still live in a free country,” he said. “My film takes no partisan sides – I don’t urge a vote for or against Obama – I just want people to think and make an informed decision. This film is well within the limits of protected free speech in a church setting.” While some legal scholars agree with those sentiments, current law may not be on the side of churches that license 2016, Stanley said. Like it or not, churches have always dipped their feet in politics. How do you feel about preachin’ politics from the pulpit?? Images via facebook

Elsewhere In The World: Paris Has Very First “Black Fashion Week” Showcasing African Talent

Paris Has Very First “Black Fashion Week” This is a good look. How beautiful are these ladies?? According to AFP: A Senegalese-born French fashion designer realised a long-held ambition when she staged the first ‘Black Fashion Week’ in Paris aimed at bringing African talent to a global audience. Adama Ndiaye launched the event to showcase the best the continent has to offer but dismissed criticism that it excluded others who were not black. “‘Why not a White Fashion Week?’ some have asked. But Paris Fashion Week is already white!” said Ndiaye, who is behind the show’s Adama Paris label and has organised Senegal’s Dakar Fashion Week for the past decade. “We wanted to simply promote beyond African borders designers who are well-known in Africa or in their country but who don’t have access to the global market,” she said, explaining that in Africa fashion was not yet seen as an industry in its own right. Even when designers put together collections, they were often unable to sell them, she said, adding that fashion week was not just an opportunity for designers. “For the models, the majority of them black, it’s also an occasion to get on the catwalk since most of the shows look for more expensive white models — some of whom dropped out of ‘Black Fashion Week’ to do better-paying gigs,” she said. Around 15 black designers from Africa or living in France, Haiti or the United States, presented their collections at the chic Pavillon Cambon Capucines in Paris. Visitors to the event, which began on Friday and ended on Saturday, included Senegalese singer and tourism minister Youssou N’Dour.

Kate Gosselin Denies Reality TV Caused Jon Split, Says Marriage Sucked Anyway

Kate Gosselin doesn’t blame reality TV for her marriage collapsing. The mother of eight told Katie Couric that she and Jon Gosselin would’ve split up eventually, regardless of whether they signed on for TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8. “A lot of people try to pin reality TV and say, ‘My gosh. It ended in divorce. Big surprise.’ We went through a lot. The signs were always there,” Kate said on Katie . “Obviously having eight kids in a short span of time didn’t help that.” “I’m not at all blaming my kids, I’m just saying. The red flags were there. So looking back, had you never heard of Jon and Kate Gosselin , I’m certain I would be in that spot now.” “It’s hard because like any mom I just want the best for my kids.” Kate, 37, and Jon Gosselin, 35, finalized their divorce in December 2009 after ten years of marriage. Things have been combative, off and on, ever since. Most recently, he has been accused of stealing her hard drive and giving it to the author of a new tell-all book slamming Kate (the author denies Jon was involved). Jon & Kate Plus 8 feels like an eternity ago, but Kate says she’s open to the idea of returning to reality TV and dating – ideally both at the same time! “After a few years in realizing my barriers to dating and all of that and loving TV and the experiences … I just feel like honestly, yes, that was my idea,” she says. “I would do it (so) it could be watched by families and my children. I think that it would be fun because that would allow me to sort of meet people, have fun, show my fun side .” “I do have one. I’m not always barking orders!” Kate Gosselin: Would you date her?   Yes, look at that body! No, it’s Kate Gosselin! Maybe, if she never talks! View Poll »
