‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Brings Robots, Chickens To Georgia

Individuality reigns at season-nine auditions in Atlanta. By Natasha Chandel Janelle Issis on “So You Think You Can Dance” Photo: FOX There were high expectations going into the Georgia auditions for season nine of “So You Think You Can Dance” since Atlanta is home to season-eight winner Melanie Moore. And the state certainly stepped up to the challenge. But the dancers who stood out the most were those who embraced their individuality and explosive charisma. Although has already seen a diverse range of personalities, Georgia dancers exuded an infectious charisma that was heightened by the pairing of some unique dance styles. The ladies in the Dirty South kept it classy while embracing their sexy confidence. And the boys, well, they certainly charmed their way to Las Vegas. Judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy and guest judge Debbie Allen had their work cut out for them, but there were a few dancers who stood out from the crowd: The Belly Dancer Janelle Issis, a proud young Middle Eastern belly dancer, shook everything her mama gave her for that coveted golden ticket to Vegas. Trained in multiple styles, Issis learned belly dancing while at church! Her beautiful face lit up further when she showed off her skills to an off-kilter hip-hop song choice. “Only in America can you learn to dance like that in church,” Lythgoe said, praising Issis. The Robot Dancer(s) The dynamic trio known as the Dragon House dancers absolutely stunned the judges with their robotic style of dance. Real-life roomies Boris Penton, Andre Rucker and Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer performed separately, each one displaying more genius than the last. Murphy remarked that she couldn’t believe she could still be surprised nine seasons into the show, and yet all three floored the judges and earned their golden tickets. The Weird Dancer Daniella Dominguez not only loves bacon (eating it five times a week) but she is also a very, very “weird dancer.” At least that’s what her family calls her, and the judges seemed to agree. “You are weird,” Murphy said. The young woman’s odd contemporary style was reminiscent of “SYTYCD” resident choreographer Sonya Tayeh, whom she loves. Granted a Vegas ticket, Daniella left ecstatic … perhaps to a waiting tub of bacon. The Country Dancer It seems there is very little hip-hop in Glade Hill, Virginia, home of Asher Walker. Cat Deeley hardly seemed surprised, but what did surprise the judges was the very country-looking Walker’s hip-hop routine. Although he didn’t get the highest of props for dance-ability, Lythgoe did say he exuded “personality,” and this seemed enough to move him ahead in the competition. The Chicken Dancer Brittany Ortner was another eccentric hopeful vying for the title of best dancer on “SYTYCD.” All she had to do to get to the audition was cross a couple chicken! Hailing from Oviedo, Florida, a town that has laws protecting the livelihood of chickens, Ortner came in bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, teasing the judges with a chicken dance before she hit her high note with an excellent contemporary routine. Ortner prevailed and will finally get some well-deserved time away from the hens as she parties it up in Vegas. The Gifted Dancer Then there was George Lawrence II. A former track champion turned dancer, Lawrence didn’t have support from his father when he left the track to pursue his new passion of dance. The moment Lawrence hit the stage, though, everything else seemed to melt away for the judges. His strength and agility were evident as he jumped and kicked his legs high above the earth with an unusual grace, much like season three’s Danny Tidwell, receiving similar comments from the judges. “There are a few people in this world who are born to dance, and you are one of them,” Allen said, while Murphy considered his audition to be the best in Georgia. Lawrence got a unanimous “yes” to move on. Other notable moments came from dancers like Courtney Kirby, who arrived arm-in-arm with her grandmother, a former dance teacher. When Murphy and Allen agreed that Kirby should move on to Vegas, the uninhibited grandmother asked Lythgoe, “You sure you don’t want to change your mind so you don’t look ridiculous?” And duo Damon Bellmon and Deon Lewis, who received terrible backlash for copying their routine from a YouTube video in their season-eight audition, returned to redeem themselves. They did so, but only Damon was pushed through all the way to Sin City. Which dancer from the Georgia auditions was your favorite?

Sarah Jessica Parker Campaigns for President, Gay Marriage

Hoping to reach a young demographic, Team Re-Elect President Barack Obama introduced its first national television spot last night during the MTV Movie Awards . The commercial features Sarah Jessica Parker, who “says you should be able to marry anyone you want” as part of the reason why she’s voting for Obama, while also touting how he’s “created four million jobs.” The actress adds: “As a woman, a mother, and an entrepreneur, I need to believe our country can be a place where everyone has a fair shot at success. This November’s election will determine whether we get to keep moving forward, or if we’re forced to go back to policies that ask people like my middle-class family in Ohio to carry the burden – while people like me, who don’t need tax breaks, get extra help.” Sarah Jessica Parker Campaigns for Obama Who will you vote for this fall?

2012 MTV Movie Awards Glory Shared By ‘Hunger Games,’ ‘Twilight’

Plus: Johnny Depp and Emma Stone get career awards, and ‘Dark Knight Rises’ footage makes its debut. By Gil Kaufman Taylor Lautner accepts for “Breaking Dawn” at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — When you promise to fuel your third hosting go-round of the MTV Movie Awards with flatulence , where is there, really, to climb from there? Luckily, veteran MC Russell Brand had plenty of rope, taking the stage for the 2012 edition of the awards dressed like a punk-rock preacher and skewering friends and fellow celebrities on a night when three of the most iconic casts of the generation duked it out for supremacy. There were some wins for the new kids on the block from “The Hunger Games” and the O.G. “Harry Potter” cast, but the night belonged to the cool kids from “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” who snagged the Best Movie prize. “Thank you so much you guys,” said a humble Kristen Stewart, surrounded by much of her cast, before telling all those who think she’s elated to be finally stepping away from the iconic role of Bella Swan to just “shut up.” The serious business couldn’t get under way, though, until Brand had his way. Dinged in the past for piling on the Jonas Brothers, the tart-tongued English comedian turned the beat around and thanked the newest member of the paparazzi-scuffle fraternity to the fold: “Well done, Justin!” he said of young Bieber, before imagining what jail might be like for the boy wonder. Brand hit the hard stuff early, joking that if you think after recent events , “It’s hypocritical of me to joke about a celebrity beating up a paparazzi, wait till you hear what I have to say about short-lived celebrity marriages .” Ouch. And then it was time to get to business. It takes some serious screen mojo to beat out Ryan Gosling, Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum, but “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson battled his way into a win in the Best Male Performance category for the night’s first prize. “Oh my God,” he exclaimed when he got his hands on the hardware. “I’ve wanted to hold a Golden Popcorn since I was, like, 4 years old,” he said. It looked like it was going to be a “Hunger Games” night, and who better than “Twilight” star Stewart to announce a win for Katniss herself, Jennifer Lawrence, in the Best Female Performance category? “I want to thank Suzanne Collins for creating such an iconic, powerful character in Katniss Everdeen. It’s been an absolute honor to portray her,” an absent Lawrence said. “Horrible Bosses” star Jennifer Aniston
scooped up the Best Onscreen Dirtbag honor for a part of her acting portfolio she said she’s been waiting forever to unleash. The ladies were in the house early, as Shailene Woodley snagged Breakthrough Performance for her totally believable turn as a sullen, frustrated teen in “The Descendants.” No actor of this generation has brought more twisted, unforgettable characters to life than Johnny Depp. From Captain Jack Sparrow, to Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Hunter S. Thompson and Willy Wonka, Johnny Depp is the reason the MTV Generation Award exists: to honor actors whose fearlessness is matched only by their coolness. He proved it by sitting in on rhythm guitar with the Black Keys for a rumble through “Gold on the Ceiling” and then jokingly comparing the Golden Popcorn honor to a “get out of the business” trophy. “All right, you’ve done too much and clearly based on the clips there’s obviously something wrong with me,” he said, guitar still dangling around his neck. Another career kudos went to Emma Stone, recipient of the first Trailblazer Award, for her wide comedic and dramatic range in everything from “Super Bad” to “Easy A,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “The Help.” Admittedly weepy and armed with the dictionary definition of “trailblazer,” Stone said, “the only thing I can hope that something like this award inspires is originality.” Harry Potter, the “21 Jump Street” kid gang, the brutal “Warrior” beat down and the high-flying “Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” all duked it out for Best Fight, but it was Lawrence, Huthcherson and their “Hunger Games” co-star, Alexander Ludwig, who were left standing when the popcorn was handed out. In a rare break with historic protocol, Best Kiss went to, so weird, an opposite -sex couple. You can’t knock the Romeo and Juliet of dysfunctional vampire love, Stewart and Robert Pattinson
, though. RPattz was elsewhere, so Kristen had to fly solo, calling out for her new “Snow White” beau, huntsman Chris Helmsworth, to kindly do the honors. Or at the very least Charlize Theron, Taylor Lautner, or anyone, really. “This really means a lot and thank you guys very much for giving us best kiss again,” she said. You can eat all the pie you want, battle as many mythical creatures as CGI artists can cook up, infiltrate any high school in the country or battle to the death, but if anyone thought they were going to hunt down the ensemble of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” in the Best Cast category, well, chill with the butter beer, will ya? Emma Watson accepted the award for her castmates, giving them all shout-outs, with special ones reserved for her two main men, Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. There’s a first time for everything and Elizabeth Banks broke the seal on the Best On-Screen Transformation category, for her role as brightly-hued, morally suspect Capitol “Hunger Games” chaperone Effie Trinket. The night also featured the enshrining of “Project X” into the instant cult classic movie category, honoring the party-out-of-control flick released earlier this year for ticking off all the degenerate prerequisites to join the likes “Animal House,” “The Hangover,” “Revenge of the Nerds,” “American Pie” and “Get Him to the Greek” in midnight movie heaven. The festivities opened with a majestic sugar pop sing-along with fun. to their megahit “We Are Young,” which had stars from Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Aniston to Vanilla Ice and Channing Tatum bopping along. Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. See what just happened at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards ! Adam Lambert has followed up an historic achievement with a brand new music video. The former American Idol runner-up finished atop the Billboard 200 chart last week, becoming the first openly gay musician to ever accomplish that feat. Watch him lead a revolution: Adam Lambert – “Never Close Our Eyes” (Official Music Video) “The one thing that I was really excited about was maybe something sort of science fiction,” says Adam of the shoot. “Something kind of New World Order, in the future. Something not of this reality. When we put that out there, a gentleman called Dori Oskowitz came back with an amazing treatment. This director is a really cool guy, totally on the same page as me.”

Mitt Romney Clinches Republican Presidential Nomination; Can He Beat President Obama?

Having effectively won through attrition weeks ago, Mitt Romney officially wrapped up the Republican nomination for president last night with a win in the Texas primary. Romney’s win put an end to the GOP primary as the former Massachusetts Governor began to ramp up his general election message against President Obama. Just after 9 p.m., he Tweeted: “#1144. Thank You. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will settle for nothing less than getting America back on the path to prosperity.” Despite surpassing the 1,144 delegate threshold, it was just a token evening for the presumptive nominee, whose rivals exited one by one over a month ago. Only Ron Paul is still fighting for delegates. With the White House out of reach, he seeks a prominent role at the party’s convention and in shaping its future. Romney didn’t make a speech last night, but the win was nonetheless symbolic, making him the first Mormon to be a major-party candidate for the presidency. The timing couldn’t have been better, as he is now being treated as an equal to Obama by the national media in what is sure to be a very close 2012 election. He’s pulled almost even with the president in voter surveys, currently trailing by just two percentage points in aggregated national polls, 45.6 to 43.6 percent. Romney probably has a 50-50 chance of being the 45th President of the United States. He’ll distance himself from Donald Trump if he’s smart. Just saying. If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd: New Couple Alert?

Dancing With the Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy was photographed kissing fellow pro dancer co-star Peta Murgatroyd this weekend, sparking rumors of romance. On Saturday at the Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas, Maksim was there celebrating with Peta, who won Dancing With the Stars with Donald Driver last week. That wasn’t the only time the hard-bodied pair and rumored couple were spotted together in Sin City. Witnesses have seen them together all over Vegas. And, at the opening of Chmerkovskiy’s new dance studio in Connecticut on May 23, the pair stood arm-in-arm while he whispered in her ear. Hmm … “She’s had a crush on him for a long time,” a source tells People of Peta. “They are really great together. And he is very happy. It’s early but I think this will last. They’re a great match, a good couple. She says they’re not dating but they are. Everyone knows it.” Still, at the debut of the Dance With Me studio (which Maks opened with his brother Val and fellow pro Tony Dovolani), both danced around questions . “I’m here to support Maksim,” was all Murgatroyd would say about Chmerkovskiy, who wouldn’t directly address the nature of their relationship either. “I try to keep certain things private just because – what’s a politically correct way of saying it? It’s none of anybody’s business,” he said. “It’s very intimate and personal.” Yeah. They’re totally doing the horizontal Argentine tango. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

Can you see Justin Bieber roughing someone up? Seriously? That’s beside the point, though. Whatever happened, Biebs’ altercation is just the latest in a long string of tense run-ins between stars and the media who cover the celebrity gossip we crave. Here’s a look back at seven of the most memorable: Bald Britney Spears Attacks Paparazzi 1. Britney Spears : After a downward spiral that saw her shave her head, file for divorce and deliver her second child in the span of a year, Spears suffered a meltdown in February 2007 that saw her violently attack a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella: 2. Russell Brand : Katy Perry’s ex recently gave a whole new meaning to the term “dropped call” as he grabbed a photographer’s iPhone and flung it through a nearby window. Brand later turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest. 3. Kanye West : The rapper racked up three misdemeanor charges in 2008 after he was arrested for allegedly wrestling with a photographer at LAX, grabbing his camera and smashing it on the floor. The charges were eventually dropped. 4. Alec Baldwin . The actor, whose fiery temper has led to some nasty public incidents, was actually placed under citizen’s arrest in 1995 after he allegedly punched a cameraman and broke his nose. A jury determined that he had acted in self-defense. The comedian later joked, “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory .” 5. Sean Penn : The two-time Oscar winner reportedly found a photographer in his hotel bedroom in China and dangled him from the ninth-floor balcony. Penn, never one to hold back, was reportedly charged with attempted murder for that charade but fled the country before authorities could nab him. 6. Lindsay Lohan : Driving over a paparazzo’s foot is just one entry on her laundry list of legal woes. Some people simply should not drive cars. 7. Bieber . Just by getting in the guy’s grill, Justin earned our respect.
