#MichelleTaughtMe: Michelle Obama’s Book Inspires Curriculum For Black Girls

T here have been many public figures who have inspired educational courses. Songstress Beyoncé ’s work has inspired college courses across the country, her hubby Jay Z was the subject of a course at Georgetown, and last year Jordan Peele ’s work was the focal point of a class at UCLA. The latest person to have a curriculum centered on her achievements and experiences is former first lady Michelle Obama , Black Enterprise reported. Turning Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ Into a Class Curriculum for Black Girls https://t.co/tf48hFOUlQ — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) December 28, 2018 After reading Obama’s best-selling book Becoming , Lauren Christine Mims identified valuable lessons that would be impactful for Black girls who are coming of age, the news outlet writes. Mims—who served as the assistant director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans and is currently enrolled in the University of Virginia’s Educational Psychology doctorate program—was so inspired that she conceptualized a curriculum for young Black girls that intertwines Obama’s journey and key principles for success. For Mims, it’s all about representation. When young girls see themselves reflected in successful Black women it changes their perspective on life. “Reading Becoming was like sitting on the couch with your best friend and having one of those soulful conversations about life,” she told the news outlet. “Reading about how Michelle Obama felt unchallenged in elementary school, teased for the way she spoke, and noticed a difference in how she was perceived during adolescence was affirming. I disrupt the traditional practice of talking about Black girls in pejorative ways and center them and their unique experiences to study how we can support them.” She also added that there should be safe spaces for Black girls to discuss their challenges and how they can overcome them. Michelle Obama is nothing short of an inspiration. In fact, she recently topped Gallup’s “Most Admired Woman list ; edging out Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey . Angelina Jolie: I Really May Run for President!

Joe Biden. Bernie Sanders. Kamala Harris. Angelina Jolie?!? In a new interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today program, the ambitious actress admitted that she’s thought about running for President someday, presumably as a Democrat. Before you laugh, it’s worth remembering that Donald Trump is currently President of the United States. It’s true! You can look it up and everything! The morally questionable real estate mogul, who highest previous position was lead star of The Apprentice (a reality show on NBC) was elected leader of the free world in November of 2016. Ever since this depressing shocker transpired, stars such as Kanye West, Dwayne Johnson and Orpah Winfrey have pondered their own run at the White House, basically figuring: Sheesh, if frickin Donald Trump can win… So, why not Jolie? She serves as a special envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency; has traveled and lived around the world; and seemingly really has dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate. When the aforementioned program’s host, Justin Webb, said he had put her on a list of Democrats who might run in 2020, Jolie laughed and said, “Thank you.” From there, she didn’t exactly dismiss this as a possibility. The actress went on to say she would stay quiet “for now” because she feels she can “get a lot done without a title.” But then she didn’t stay quiet. She started to list her qualifications! “I’m able to work with governments, and I’m also able to work with militaries, and so I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done without a title and without it being about myself or my policies,” she explained. At one point, Jolie’s shady past may have prevented her from ever reaching the Oval Office. But Trump totally banged a porn star while married and then paid her hush money and no one seems to care. Given that context, would Jolie stealing Brad Pitt from Jennifer Aniston really be an obstacle in a Presidential run? “I don’t know if I’m fit for politics, but then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet,” Jolie told BBC here, adding: “I’m pretty open and out there, and I can take a lot on the chin. So that’s good. But I honestly will do whatever I think can really make change.” And the Winner is? Angelina Jolie Click Here To Vote for Angelina Brad Pitt Click Here To Vote for Brad You must choose one. Which of these stars would you prefer as Commander-in-Chief? View Poll » Jolie will serve an executive producer of a new BBC-run global English-language news program for children, scheduled to premiere in 2019. Aside from the fact that, like, 75% of women in the country despise her, the star’s resume really isn’t all that terrible for someone who may get into politics. Jolie ended her interview by saying it was important to her that the aforementioned project be global and “help young people in different countries to be connected to each other and to have greater awareness and understanding of the news on an international basis.” So there you have it. Angelina Jolie in 2020? Does she have your vote?

Billionaire Richelieu Dennis of SheaMoisture, Essence shares vision for Irvington mansion https://t.co/ptextEoVkt pic.twitter.com/HRen6pNaUR — lohud.com (@lohud) December 19, 2018 Dennis wants to use the historic residence—which is 20,000-square-feet and has over 30 rooms—for the creation of an entrepreneurship program that will help women further their businesses through collaboration. “When people think of women’s empowerment and economic inclusion, they should think of Irvington,” said Dennis, during a meeting of the Irvington Village Board of Trustees. “The idea is we would create a think tank where we would have some of the some of the best minds in the country thinking about entrepreneurs and the challenges of entrepreneurship for women and women of color.” Dennis plans on restoring the mansion and then implementing the program. As a Liberian immigrant who came from humble beginnings, he sees a lot of parallels between he and Walker’s story and believes that the incubator will be a way to pay homage to the woman who was our country’s first Black woman self-made millionaire. “The Dennis family wants to make sure that Madam Walker’s legacy continues not only through the hair care products but also through this beautiful home that was intended by Madam Walker as a place that would inspire others,” Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles told the news outlet. “They embody it themselves and they understand why it is important for other people to be able to share the vibrations that come from that house.” The home was constructed 100 years ago by Black architect Vertner Tandy . Donald Trump Signs Criminal Justice Reform Bill; But Government Set To Shutdown Over Border Wall Funding Disputes

Source: Win McNamee / Getty Trump Pushes Through Criminal Justice Reform Bill; But Still Threatens Government Shutdown According to CNBC , Donald Trump has officially signed a Criminal Justice reform bill, all while the threat of a government shutdown looms. Calling the bill “an incredible success for our country” and “beyond bipartisan” during an Oval Office signing ceremony, the proposed legislation will give judges more discretion when sentencing some drug offenders and will boost prisoner rehabilitation efforts In a rare instance of both Democratic and Republican lawmakers agreeing on a similar issue, all agreed that the signing was a hugely influential package and thanked the president for supporting the issue and uniting conservatives and liberals. While the reform legislation was considered a success, the House and Senate adjourned Friday night as negotiations continued between White House and congressional leaders over border wall funding. This guarantees a partial government shutdown at midnight when 25% of federal government funding is set to lapse.

Michelle Obama Surprises Black College Students In Detroit

W hile traveling across the country for her Becoming book tour, former first lady Michelle Obama has been leaving a trail of inspiration in every city that she’s visited. During a recent stop in Detroit, a group of Black students from Wayne State University were in for a surprise when Obama gave them an unexpected visit, the Detroit Free Press reported. Michelle Obama stuns Wayne State Uni. students at the Motown Museum https://t.co/BWHS4PTXMr — Detroit Free Press (@freep) December 11, 2018 With every tour stop for her best-selling book, Obama has made the effort to go beyond the Q&A sessions about her memoir and interact with individuals in local communities. A group of young Black men from Wayne State was invited by her Reach Higher initiative to have an intimate discussion with her brother Craig Robinson and actor Keegan-Michael Key about the importance of education at the Motown Museum. Unbeknownst to them, Obama would be joining the conversation too. Before her appearance at Little Caesars Arena, she stopped by the museum to surprise the students and was greeted with applause. The students then candidly shared personal experiences about finding their place as Black men in predominately white spaces. One student shared the struggle of having to continuously justify who he was. “Trust me. It will continue beyond college, no matter where we go. There were people who thought that Barack couldn’t be a good president. There were people who questioned whether I would be a good first lady. My brother gets questioned all the time about whether he’s qualified or able, and we all face those things,” she said, according to the news outlet. “That doesn’t go away. But you have to practice knowing who you are and focus on just doing the work day by day. That’s really all you can do.” She encouraged all of the young men to push forward and continue to reach new heights of success. Obama is reaching new heights of her own. According to Forbes , she has now sold 3 million copies of her book since it was released in November. WWII All Black Women Unit Honored With Monument

Go here to see the original:

A group of trailblazing Black women are finally getting the recognition that they deserve. The women who were a part of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the U.S. Army’s only all-Black all-women unit during WWII—were honored with a monument in Kansas, Radio.com reported. Five of the 800+ servicewomen were present at the monument dedication ceremony. https://t.co/RKSpLMh6Ty — CBS News Radio (@CBSNewsRadio) December 8, 2018 The group—which was made up of over 800 Black women—was responsible for organizing mail in a segregated unit, the news outlet writes. They served during a time where the Women Army Corps were separated by race and women of color were rarely allowed to serve overseas. Nearly 73 years ago, after the Red Cross had a huge backlog of mail that was supposed to be distributed to U.S. service members, the women were selected to serve in Birmingham, England to help with the issue. Prior to traveling to Europe, they trained in Camp Shanks, New York. The group was led by Lt. Col Charity Edna Adams who was the first Black woman to be an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. According to the news outlet, the women went through 65,000 pieces of mail during each shift. They were forced to work in unclean, rat-infested warehouses. The monument in Fort Leavenworth features the names of all the women and imagery from their journey. Five of the women who served were in attendance at the ceremony. “Servicemen want their mail. That’s a morale booster,” 95-year-old Lena King , who was a part of the unit, told KCTV . “Within six months, we had cleared up two to three years of back mail.” The unsung legacies of these women will live on through the monument. The dedication of the monument comes shortly after the passing of Tulsa Race Riot survivor Olivia Hooker who was the first Black women to enter the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945. National Museum Of African American History And Culture To Display LeBron James’ Equality Sneakers

N BA star LeBron James has been an influential voice in the fight for social justice and now his efforts to spread awareness about social equality will be highlighted at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, NBC Washington reported. Lebron James’ Equality sneakers at the NMAAHC https://t.co/NBE1NSKpkp — NBCWashington (@nbcwashington) December 15, 2018 The black and white equality sneakers that James wore during a game against the Washington Wizards last year are heading to the Smithsonian, the news outlet writes. He donned the sneakers to express his disapproval of the racial division that Donald Trump has incited in our country. One sneaker was black, the other was white, and both had the word “equality” on them. The addition of the sneakers to the museum will add to the history and ongoing narrative of how athletes are using their platforms to bring attention to social justice issues. “When he wore the black and white pair, it’s something we paid attention to. Thinking about the significance of the shoes and LeBron’s contribution to fighting for social justice, we decided it would make sense and be a great opportunity to add these shoes into our collection,” Dr. Damion Thomas , who curates the sports exhibit at the museum, told USA Today . “One of our main goals is not just collect things with significant historical background and importance, but also think about the objects that allow us to engage in the contemporary questions and issues that the nation is grappling with.” The sneakers are slated to be featured at the museum this fall. This isn’t the first time that James has been involved with the museum. In 2016, he made a $2.5 million donation to the Muhammad Ali exhibit. “Every professional athlete, regardless of race and gender, owes a huge debt of gratitude to Muhammad Ali,” James said in a statement, according to the Huffington Post . “His legacy deserves to be studied and revered by every generation.” SEE ALSO: The NBA Is Back! Anfisa Nava: Paola Mayfield is a Little B-tch TLC Pawn!

On top of revealing how Jorge’s prison sentence has changed her life for the worst, Anfisa Nava recently explained why they’re done with the show. She says that negotiations for a pay raise fell through, and that she and Jorge didn’t want to be TLC’s “little b–ches.” Anfisa was throwing shade at her former castmates, and Paola and Russ have issued a response. Anfisa has dedicated a lot of her free time to bodybuilding recently, but she still makes time for her fans. “We had to make a choice,” Anfisa explained recently. “Either we go into something on our own, like our YouTube channel and other things,” Anfisa said. “Or,” she continued. “We had to become the show’s little b–ches and do whatever they tell us to do, like some people.” It was that final jab that caught the attention of fans, and ultimately prompted Russ and Paola to respond. In a very lengthy YouTube video (Paola and Russ want fans to watch their 15 minute YouTube video? In this economy?), they replied. “It was very undermining, the way it was stated, and it generalized the cast,” Russa states. “And we just didn’t appreciate that,” “If you’re going to make jabs,” Russ suggests. “And you’re going to call someone out, then do it.” “But don’t generalize it, because, in the end, we’re all a part of this,” he says. Generalizing hurts everyone. He has a point. “And,” Russ says. “We all want to be a part of this.” Paola and Russ continue, saying that the show has helped them to build a base of fans and to connect with viewers. “And thanks to the show, all of you know about us,” Paola says. “To be honest,” Pao continues. “We are grateful to have been on the show for so many seasons.” That’s a very positive attitude. Russ and Paola go on to praise Danielle Mullins and Mohamed Jbali for bringing attention to 90 Day Fiance . They say that the controversial couple “really put the show on the map.” We don’t dispute that. Paola then praised Danielle for having been so smart with how she spent the money that she made from the series. The timing of that was awkward, since Danielle has been begging fans for cash . To be fair, Danielle invested her money into her home and into furthering her education. It wasn’t frivilous spending. Paola and Russ then suggest that Anfisa was trying to bite off more than she could chew with TLC. “Just because that specific person is not getting the ridiculous amount of money that she’s asking,” Paola says. It’s clear that the person to whom they are referring is Anfisa. “Yeah,” Russ adds.” I mean, they’re asking something along the lines of Kim Kardashian.” That’s a doozy of a claim. We have trouble beliving that Anfisa wants $500,000 per episode. We suspect that Russ and Paola don’t realize how much Kim makes per episode — or how much they themselves could be making. “Even more than what Kim Kardashian can get,” Pao claims, “And let’s be honest — this is not MTV, this is not E! Entertainment television.” “And at the end, yeah, the money is good,” Paola says. “But the idea of doing this show is not just about the money.” Well, she and Russ both work. Anfisa has not been shy about being fixated on money. Pao has other priorities. “You have fun,” Paola says. “You enjoy it. You want to share your story.” Paola is great, but she’s missing the mark about this. TLC is a television network, not a cobbled-together YouTube channel. And  90 Day Fiance  ratings tend to outpace other major reality series. Maybe the stars have been told that they can only afford to make $1,000 or so per episode. But many suspect that they could be making a whole lot more, with TLC still turning a tidy profit. After Paola shared the video, she received some heated comments from diehard Anfisa stans. Yes, they exist. Paola defended herself and Russ. “She is trying to stay irrelevant by trashing the show and the cast,” Paola says of Anfisa’s abruptly ended reality career. Pao says “calling us ‘little bitches of the network’ just because she didn’t get what she wants it’s ridiculous!” “If she hates the show so much,” Paola suggests. “Maybe she needs to move on and stop tagging 90DF and talking s–t about the cast!” “Maybe it is none of my business what she says,” Pao admits. “But I’m part of the franchise and that video wasn’t just about her.” “I wish her nothing by the best as I know she is alone in this country with her husband in jail,” Paola says. “Have a great day!” Nice shade there, Paola. Meanwhile, Anfisa had her own response to anyone who thinks that she was calling them “little b–ches.” “If the shoe fits, wear it,” Anfisa announced. They were picked from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants. Amongst the Black students who received the honor are Lia Petrose , a University of Pittsburgh alumna who studied economics and neuroscience and minored in chemistry, University of Pennsylvania senior Anea B. Moore who is studying law and Africana studies, and Austin T. Hughes from the University of Iowa who is currently majoring in theatre arts, creative writing and literature and Japanese linguistics. All three students have used their knowledge to make an impact in their local communities and beyond. Petrose led a research project in Malawi surrounding the economics of health information systems, Moore has explored how race, class, and gentrification are intertwined through her research, and Hughes has received several awards for his creative writing. “This year’s American Rhodes Scholars—independently elected by 16 committees around the country meeting simultaneously—once again reflect the extraordinary diversity that characterizes the United States,” said Elliot F. Gerson , American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust, in a statement . “These Scholars plan to study a wide range of fields across the social sciences, biological and medical sciences, physical sciences and mathematics, and the humanities. They are certain to enrich our future.” The Rhodes Trust has come a long way when it comes to the representation of Black scholars. According to the news outlet, the first African-American to receive a scholarship was philosopher Alain LeRoy Locke in 1907. In 2017, 10 Black students were named Rhodes scholars.
