You’ll recall Serena nearly died after giving birth to her adorable daughter, Alexis Olympia . In an article written for CNN back in February, she revealed: “First my C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing I endured as a result of the embolism. I returned to surgery, where the doctors found a large hematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in my abdomen. And then I returned to the operating room for a procedure that prevents clots from traveling to my lungs.” At the time, Serena also spoke about Black moms-to-be not getting proper care: “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black women in the United States are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes. But this is not just a challenge in the United States. Around the world, thousands of women struggle to give birth in the poorest countries. When they have complications like mine, there are often no drugs, health facilities or doctors to save them. If they don’t want to give birth at home, they have to travel great distances at the height of pregnancy.” Now, according to The Philly Voice , she told some 10,000 women on Friday: “I did some research and I was alarmed that our black mothers are not being taken care of. It’s in this country that is supposed to be so technologically advanced. Why are we treating out mothers like this?” Adding, “It’s really unacceptable…I feel like if I can help save lives—that’s one of the best things that you can do.” Source: Gilbert Carrasquillo / WireImage / Getty In the process of gushing about how supportive her husband, Alexis Ohanian , has been, Serena also told the crowd she has some insecurities: “I always have these insecurities that I’m not good enough as a mom. We all go through these different emotions that we all don’t feel comfortable talking about. But I think we should.” You’ve got to love her.
Source: Pool / Getty K anye West delivered the rant heard ’round the world on Thursday, when he visited his leader Donald Trump in the White House. The meeting was billed as being about criminal justice reform in Chicago, seeing as Kanye’s hometown made a cameo appearance this week in the president’s speech to the nation’s police chiefs about the unconstitutional practice of stop-and-frisk. However, once Kanye was given the floor of the Oval Office, he took it and ran [amok] with it, mostly speaking inaccurately on everything from that revolting MAGA hat to the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. Read the full text of Kanye’s latest rant below, courtesy of a transcription from New York magazine’s Vulture: “Here we have Larry Hoover’s lawyer with us today and it’s a prisoner that we’re focused on. He has six life sentences and they have him next to the unibomber doing 23 and 1 … Really the reason why they imprisoned [Larry Hoover] is because he started doing positive for the community. He started showing that he actually had power, he wasn’t just one of a monolithic voice but he could wrap people around, so there’s theories that there’s infinite amounts of universe, and there’s alternate universe, so it’s very important for me to get Hoover out because in an alternate universe, I am him. And I have to go and get him free because he was doing positive inside of Chicago, just like how I’m moving back to Chicago and it’s not just about, you know, getting on stage and being an entertainer, and having a monolithic voice that’s forced to be a specific party. “You know, people expect that if you’re black you have to be Democrat. I have conversations that basically said that welfare is the reason why a lot of black people end up being Democrat they say – you know first of all, it’s a limit to amount of jobs, so the fathers lose the job and they say, ‘We’ll give you more money for having more kids in your home.’ And then we got rid of the mental health institutes in the 80s and the 90s and the prison rates just shot up. And now you have Chiraq, what people call Chiraq, which actually, our murder rate is going down by 20 per cent every year. I just talked to the superintendent, met with Michael Sacks, that’s Ron’s right hand man. So, I think it’s the bravery that helps you beat this game called life. You know they tried to scare me to not wear this hat, my own friends, but this hat, it gives me power in a way. “You know, my dad and my mom separated, so I didn’t have a lot of male energy in my home. And also I’m married now into a family that, you know, not a lot of male energy going on, it’s beautiful though. But there’s times where, you know, it’s something about, I love Hillary, I love everyone, right, but the campaign “I’m With Her” just didn’t make me feel as a guy that didn’t get to see my dad all the time, like a guy that could play catch with his son. It was something about when I put this hat on, it made me feel like Superman. You made us Superman, that’s my favorite superhero, and you made a Superman cape for me. “Also as a guy that looks up to you, looks up to Ralph Lauren, looks up to American industry guys. Non-political, no bullshit [looks at media members] – put the beep on it, however you want to do it, five seconds delay – and just goes in and gets it done. Right now, you gave me the heart to go to Adidas. When I went in, in 2015, we were a $14 billion company losing $2 billion a year. Now, we have $38 billion market cap. It’s called “The Yeezy Effect.” And went and I said, “You have to bring manufacturing on-shore. Not even on-shore, into the core. It’s not about the borders. The core of Adidas, and Chicago, is the core of middle America, and we have to make middle America strong. “So, I had the balls, because I have enough balls to put on this hat. I mean, this Adidas thing made me a billionaire. And I could have lost $200 million walking away from that deal. But even with that, I knew it was more important for me to take the chance of walking away from that deal, than to have no fathers in Chicago, with no homes. And when we do have prison reformation, not rehabilitation, because they didn’t have the abilities in the first place. We never had anyone who taught us, they didn’t teach us. Then any specific deal, anything, that we bring jobs into America. And that we provide a transition with mental health and the AmeriCan education curriculum that Jim has worked on. Larry Hoover also has a curriculum that he’s worked on. We have Montessori curriculums that we worked on. WeWorks has beautiful curriculum. The Waldorf establishment has a curriculum. We have meditation. “There’s a lot of things affecting our mental health that makes us do crazy things, that puts us back into that trap door that’s called the 13th Amendment. I did say, “abolish,” with the hat on, because why would you keep something around that’s a trap door. If you building a floor, the constitution is the base of our industry, of our country, of our company. Would you build a trap door that if you mess up and accidentally something happens, you fall and you end up next to the Uni-bomber, you gotta remove all that trapdoor out of the relationship. The four gentleman that wrote the 13th Amendment, and I think the way the universe works is perfect, we don’t have 13 floors, do we? You know, the four gentleman that wrote the 13th amendment didn’t look like the people they were amending. Also, at that point, it was illegal for blacks to read, or African Americans, to read. So, that meant if you actually read the Amendment, you’d get locked up! And turned into a slave. Again, so what I think is, we don’t need sentences, we need pardons. We need to talk to people. “I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I was connected with a neuropsychologist that works with the athletes in the NBA and NFL. He looked at my brain, it’s equal on three parts. I’m gonna go ahead, drop some bombs for you. 98 percentile IQ test, I had a 75 percentile of all human beings when it was counting eight numbers backwards, so I’m gonna work on that one. The other ones, 98 percent, Tesla, Freud. So, he said that I actually wasn’t bipolar, I had sleep deprivation, which could cause dementia 10-20 years from now, where I wouldn’t even remember my son’s name. So, all this power that I’ve got, and I’m taking my son to the Sox game and all that, I wouldn’t be able to remember his name, from a misdiagnosis. What we need is, we can empower the pharmaceuticals and make more money. That’s one thing, I’ve never stepped into a situation where I didn’t make people more money. So, we can empower pharmaceuticals, we can empower our industries, we can empower our factories, we can bring, not only Adidas on shore, we could bring Foxconn and set up a factory in, I think, Minnesota [corrected by Trump that it’s Wisconsin]. “Yeah, Wisconsin. They have 4,000 jobs, people making 53,000 a year. And one of the things we gotta set is, Ford to have the highest designs. The dopest cars. The most amazing. I don’t really say, “dope,” I don’t say negative words and try to flip ‘em. We just say positive, lovely, divine, universal words. So, the flyest, freshest, most amazing car. And what we start with, is – I brought a GIF with me right here. [Scrolls through iPhone to show Trump.] This right here is the iPlane 1. It’s a hydrogen powered airplane, and this is what our president should be flying in. We’re gonna have Apple, an American company, work on this plane. “What I need Saturday Night Live to improve on, or what I need the liberals to improve on is, if he don’t look good [pointing to Trump], we don’t look good. This is our President. He has to be the freshest, the flyest, the flyest planes, the best factories. And we have to make our core be empowered. We have to bring jobs into America, because our best export is entertainment and ideas. But when we make everything in China and not America, then we’re cheating on our country, and we’re putting people in positions to have to do illegal things to end up in the cheapest factory every, the prison system.” SEE ALSO: Kanye West ‘Can’t Say’ If Abraham Lincoln Was Black Or White Snoop Dogg Rips Into Kanye For Loving Trump: ‘F**k You!’ [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3831284″ overlay=”true”]
Black Hollywood is putting in that work right now. If it were a person, Black Hollywood would have clear skin, an immaculate hairline, edges to die for and a shoe game worthy of its own show on Complex. The future is bright. Black stars from the 99s and 2000s are becoming bosses, moving from in front of the camera to behind the camera. Gabrielle Union’s production company just secured the rights to the next big YA novel turned movie 500 Words Or Less. Kevin Hart just produced his first movie, Night School, which opened at number 1 at the box offices. With all this success and transitioning, who are the stars of tomorrow? Well, if the next crop of actors and actresses are a sign of the future, the kids of Black Hollywood will be alright. We have a bunch of super talented actors, who are getting all the roles, Brian Tyree Henry, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita N’yongo, Tiffany Haddish and more, but who’s next? Here is a list of 6 actors you need to put on your radar right now. They are the future. Image via Michael Krinke/Getty Black Man Acquitted For Admitted Killing Racist White Man Here’s a story you don’t hear everyday, a Black man getting away scot free with murdering a white man after openly admitting he did it. According to WNEP , 30-year-old Stephen Spencer was shooting pool with some local folk back in July 2017 in his hometown of Pittston, Pennsylvania. After he successfully whooped some white guy a$$, he did the gentlemanly thing and extended a handshake to the aforementioned whooped a$$. Thing is, the whooped a$$ belonging to 32-year-old Christopher Williams wasn’t interesting in sportsmanship. It’s not totally clear what happened next, but a kerfuffle of some sort ensued, and the melanin-deficient whooped a$$ and his friends allegedly spouted off some racist epithets at Spencer. Once the fight went outside, Spencer started swingin’ that iron and shot Williams dead in front of everyone. When police arrived, Spencer didn’t even try to hide it. He told officers, “Here is the gun. I shot him.” Fast forward to this past Friday, Spencer was acquitted of homicide, aggravated assault and terroristic threats by a jury of his peers after only four hours of deliberation according to the Times Leader . It was determined that Spencer was only acting in self-defense against the handful of racist men who planning to attack him. Let this be a lesson to racists all around the country, if you and your homies get killed for calling people n-words in Pittston, Pennsylvania, that’s just the way it is.
(Photo by: MediaForMedical/UIG via Getty Images) The current President has given many closeted racists the courage to be a bigot in public — but fortunately there are some folks out here who stand up for truth and justice, despite the favor being on their side. Like Kamira Trent who was just shopping in a Colorado grocery store when she noticed a White woman, Linda Dwire , yelling at two Hispanic women for speaking Spanish. Dwire reportedly asked the women if they liked America, and then told them that if they did, they should be speaking English . Trent yelled at the bigot, “I’m calling the cops. You leave these women alone! Get out!” Dwire ignorantly clapped back, “You come from a generation that’s destroying this country. You will lose your country. You know what. You come from a generation that’s destroying this country” To which Trent responded, “No I do not. I have respect. You do not harass people.” According to Buzzfeed News , Dwire told the officer she was exercising her right to freedom of speech and that she found it offensive the two women were speaking Spanish because they “didn’t have the respect to speak English.” The cops arrived shortly after and arrested Linda Dwire. She was taken to Garfield County Jail, and charged with two counts of bias-motivated harassment.
G eorgia’s Republican secretary of state, who’s competing against Stacey Abrams for governor, allegedly oversaw the removal of thousands of likely Abrams supporters from the state’s voting rolls. See Also: GOP Ramps Up Voter Suppression Efforts Ahead Of Upcoming Elections A group of voting rights organizations announced a lawsuit on Tuesday against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp for using a racially-biased method that has purged about 700,000 voters ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections, WXIA-TV reported. The organizations reportedly include Jesse Jackson ’s Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Kemp has failed to notify the affected voters who will likely be turned away at the polls on Election Day, the suit alleged. “What has taken place here in Georgia is an insult to all of the efforts and accomplishments that we have done throughout this country,” Charles Steele , president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said at a press conference Tuesday about the Black struggle to win voting rights. This comes as Abrams attempts to make history as the nation’s first elected Black female governor. Civil rights lawsuit filed against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp | WJBF https://t.co/j7jGoqjV3D — The Voting News (@VotingNews) October 3, 2018 This case is part of a larger Republican voter suppression effort, according to activists. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 split decision, approved Ohio’s practice of removing registered voters from its rolls if they haven’t participated in recent elections. About a dozen other states controlled by Republicans wanted to adopt Ohio’s system following the court’s ruling. “Georgia has been more aggressive than Ohio in removing names,” Nse Ufot , executive director of New Georgia Project, told NewsOne , adding that the practice disproportionately affects people of color. Her organization “stands in solidarity” with the groups that filed the suit. Kemp is accused of using the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program to maintain Georgia’s list of eligible voters. The inaccurate system is seriously flawed , Ufot said. Meanwhile, Kemp has vehemently denied the voter suppression allegation, claiming in a statement that the lawsuit “has no merit” because Georgia hasn’t used the Crosscheck Program. A Black venture capitalist is using her business acumen and resources to revitalize underserved areas in Washington, D.C. Through her company EB5 Capital, Angelique Brunner is intertwining community restoration, job creation and citizenship for foreign investors, Fast Company reported. This black female entrepreneur is rebuilding D.C. with foreign dollars—and a dream https://t.co/wl8wUU96Iw — Fast Company (@FastCompany) September 29, 2018 Brunner moved to the nation’s capital nearly 20 years ago and discovered neighborhoods that were in dire need of help, the news outlet writes. Many of the predominately Black communities that had been ravaged by the 1968 riots following the death of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were left with abandoned buildings and nearly no businesses for decades. Determined to evoke change in these neighborhoods, Brunner launched EB5 Capital. The company gives investors from other countries the opportunity to put money towards rebuilding D.C. neighborhoods in exchange for green-cards and a smoother journey to U.S. citizenship. Brunner—who was once the only Black woman in the venture capital world from the New York City to Atlanta area—believes the program is beneficial for all parties involved. “People are willing to invest in the United States for an expedited visa process. The only hitch is that you have to create jobs with the money they invest,” she told the news outlet. “We are focused on job creation, but livable cities require jobs and affordable housing. You can actually have financial gains in a neighborhood that don’t necessarily change the racial fabric of a neighborhood initially. To me, the only way to address the addition of economic opportunity is to consciously create mixed-income neighborhoods.” EB5 Capital has worked on projects that include the City Market at O Street and the city’s Columbia Place development. There have been several efforts to rebuild underserved communities throughout the country. In August, it was reported that former NBA star and business mogul Earvin “Magic” Johnson has his sights set on revitalizing neighborhoods in Baltimore . Source: Photo by L. Cohen/WireImage / Getty On August 27, 2003, history was made when Kelis released a national anthem for anyone with goods to show off. “Milkshake” hit the airwaves as the lead single from Kelis’ third studio album Tasty and it soon took off for its suggestive lyrics and catchy hook. The music video also lived up to the hype with Kelis showing her sexy side along with some very pro-dairy waiters. When Kelis was asked what the song means by The Guardian back in 2004, she replied, “It means whatever people want it to; it was just a word we came up with on a whim, but then the song took on a life of its own.” Kelis definitely wasn’t over-exaggerating. With the help of the music video, “Milkshake” peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, according to Billboard , and it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2004. Even the people of Ireland were “warming it up” when the song shot to number one on the country’s chart. Now with #NationalChocolateMilkDay making waves on Twitter, I thought it would be a good time to celebrate all the delicious moves “Milkshake” helped inspire. Before “twerking” became a household word or “cakes” were getting “smashed to smithereens,” there were milkshakes bringing plenty of people to the yard and till this day, the legacy lives on. Choreographer Kaelynn “KK” Harris made sure all her team’s goods were on deck when they threw down to various remixes of “Milkshake” in a sexy video… Even fitness channels, like Hip Shake Fitness, were bringing the taste of Kelis to their routines…for better or for worse. And if you’re wondering if the song works well for the pole, dancer Meggan Marie and her ladies seem to make it work… The international community also continues to show the song love with places like the Nataraja Academy in South Korea putting their own spin to the seductive song. Peep Gangdrea ‘s choreography in the clip below…. When Kelis was asked about the song 14 years later by delish in 2017, she replied that she’s into different things now. “People really think I’m at home making milkshakes all day,” she said. “Let’s be real — that doesn’t happen.” She continued, “I’ve got kids. I’m making smoothies for them and trying to sneak in healthy things that they’ll eat.” Despite the change of priorities for the mother, the song will continue to live on for every dairy lover and milkshaker of the future. Thank you Kelis. Your contributions won’t be forgotten.

If you ask some people Lil Wayne is one of the most talented and versatile artists that hip-hop has ever seen. If you ask others, he may be labeled inconsistent, one minute he’ll drop a metaphor that makes you pause the music and think, the next he’s going into way too much detail about how he likes to perform oral sex on women. Either way Lil Wayne has been one of the brightest stars in hip-hop since his appearance on ‘Back That Azz Up’ by Juvenile back in 1998. Source: Rick Kern / Getty The star has seen tumultuous times in his career, from being imprisoned at Rikers Island to basically being held hostage by his own adopted father, he’s seen it all, but its truly only made the hip-hop community appreciate his contributions that much more. With that being said, we consider Weezy to be one of the top 25 rappers of all-time (maybe even higher) so we’d be remiss to not take a look back at Wayne’s career on his 36th birthday. Here are our picks for the top 10 Lil Wayne songs, in no particular order! 10. Lollipop We know what your’e thinking, why is this corny ass Lil Wayne song the first one listed? Well despite how corny it may be it was a radio smash hit spending a crazy six weeks at #1 on the Hip Hop Billboard charts. The song also stayed on Billboard charts for an astounding 26 weeks. No one could have guessed the success of this song when it was first released. As the first single to ‘The Carter 3’, it created an incredible amount of momentum for Wayne which culminated in the album going #1 on the Billboard albums chart and ended up selling over 1 million units in the first week and it can thank this international hit for a big portion of the sales. 9. A Milli From that same spectacular album came a more bar centric song in ‘A Milli’ which saw Wayne boasting about his incredible talent and comparing popping people with guns to popping Orville Redenbacher popcorn. 8. 6 Foot 7 Foot After the release of ‘The Carter 3’ most fans were wondering if Wayne could top what ended up being the best album of his career. He responded by dropping one of his best tracks yet in ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’. In the song he gave us one of the most memorable Lil Wayne bars of all-time in: ‘Real G’s move in silence like lasagna’. In addition to this he introduced us to the young and talented Cory Gunz. 7. Tha Block is Hot This song was Wayne’s first official single from his debut major label album, one could argue that without the success and longevity of this southern banger we wouldn’t have the Wayne we have today. 6. Go DJ When Wayne linked up with Mannie Fresh on his fourth album it introduced him to a sound that was more mainstream appealing while still being hard hitting like his songs that preceded it. It got Wayne into clubs all around the country and were positive it made some fans sure that Wayne was destined to be a star. You couldn’t ride around in a car at all without hearing this song in 2004. Rappers just don’t drop tracks like this anymore. 5. Georgia Bush Alright, that’s enough of album Wayne, real Lil Wayne fans will tell you that despite his album success, he’s actually at his best on his mixtapes. After the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, Wayne felt compelled to speak up for his native New Orleans which he felt was ignored by then President George W. Bush. In the song he criticizes the President and highlights just how hard New Orleans was hit. To this day its still one of the most heartfelt Weezy tracks. You can find this track on his collaborative mixtape with DJ Drama titled ‘Dedication 2’ which dropped in 2006. 4. Upgrade Da Drought 3 may be a top contender for one of the best Lil Wayne mixtapes, seriously go listen to it again, it’s fire! Its actually really hard to pick one stand out song from the tape but if we had to pick, it would be this track for sure. 3. Stuntin Stuntin was one of the first tracks where we got to hear Wayne and his protege, an unknown by the name of Drake, spit on a track together. It easily became an instant classic from his Dedication 3 mixtape. Oh, and this was the first mixtape to drop after Barack Obama was nominated President in 2008 as DJ Drama reminds us in the middle of the freakin song. 2. Swag Surfin As you can tell, on his mixtapes, Wayne made a habit of ruining other peoples songs by going harder on them than the original artist did. On ‘swag surfin’ Wayne literally spazzes with straight bars over the whole track. It’s honestly a classic Wayne track and isn’t even as popular as some of his other tracks. 1. Rap City Freestyle Okay, this last pick isn’t an actual song, its one of Wayne’s most popular freestyles on one of his appearances on the now debunked BET show ‘Rap City’. Still it shows just how talented he was and why he is ultimately considered to be one of the best MC’s to ever grace a mic with his presence. So, what do you say, do you agree with our list?
