O Music Awards Dance Marathon Sets Guinness Record

Dancers broke the record for Longest Team Dance Marathon. By Gil Kaufman Dancers participate in the Longest Team Dance Marathon at O Music Awards 2 Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images They came, they danced, they kept on dancing and then they danced a bit more and set a Guinness World Record. And it all happened at the O Music Awards on Monday night when a group of tireless hoofers grinded it out for 24 hours to snatch the Guinness record for the Longest Team Dance Marathon . The group of dancers — a lucky 13 — assembled at the Roxy in Hollywood on Halloween Eve to kick off their attempt with some musical assistance from DJ Diamond Kuts. And then they were off, tearing it up, with minimal five-minute breaks per hour, for 24 hours. And it was all for a good cause, to raise awareness for National Bullying Prevention Month and to raise cash for a number of anti-bullying campaigns from groups including GLAAD, GLSEN, GSA Network, HRC and the It Gets Better Project and Trevor Project. At one point less than 12 minutes before the record was set, one of the night’s co-hosts, D-Trix, pulled aside dancer Danielle and asked her how it was going. Doing a kind of slow-motion “Saturday Night Fever” hip-sway and point when asked how she was doing, she said, “Oh fantastic, but I can’t wait for this thing to be over.” When they finally crashed the 24-hour mark, it was like New Year’s Eve, with balloons falling from the ceiling and lots of whooping. The dancers celebrated by stomping the balloons and, well, doing a bit more dancing to MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This,” pausing only to receive their official Guinness World Record certificate. The dance record was just one of the highlights of the show, which featured killer performances from Mac Miller, the Band Perry, the Alabama Shakes and traffic-stopping headliner Robyn , as well as special appearances by Kelly Clarkson , Tyler, the Creator, Demi Lovato, Travie McCoy, John Cho and Kal Penn. There were, of course, plenty of awards handed out as well, including nods to Adam Lambert (Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Joe Jonas (Best Lyrics Video, “See No More”), Lovato (Best Artist With a Camera Phone), Nirvana (Best Vintage Viral Video, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”) and Bj

Plus, O Music dancers break the Guinness World Record for the Longest Team Dance Marathon. By Kara Warner Robyn performs at the O Music Awards on Monday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Much like the colorful, frenetic, costumed masses that take over West Hollywood, California, on Halloween, MTV’s second annual O Music Awards were so full of creativity, cutting-edge artistry and just plain crazy spirit, it was a perfect fit to be broadcast live from the largest street party in the world. Thanks to killer live performances by Mac Miller , the Band Perry (live from Phoenix), the Alabama Shakes (live from Austin), traffic-stopping headliner Robyn , and extra-special appearances by Kelly Clarkson , Tyler, the Creator, Demi Lovato, Travie McCoy, John Cho and Kal Penn, the action-packed show completely delivered on its “Offbeat, outrageous, online” tagline and then some. Not only that, but the O Music Award dance marathon officially broke the Guinness World Record for the Longest Team Dance Marathon. Oh yeah, and we handed out some really cool awards to very deserving and grateful artists, several of whom proved to be upsets in their respective categories (for example, the Aliens bested the Beliebers, Taylor Nation and

Tony Todd On Final Destination, Candyman And Blacks In Horror

Read the original here:

(Originally published August 17, 2011) Tony Todd , the star of Final Destination 5, is on his way to visit his hometown of Washington D.C. on a sunny August morning, and hasn’t a care in the world.  While audiences know Todd for his role in the 1992 cult classic Candyman , he is a classically trained thespian whose roots started in theater.  Born into poverty to a single mother in 1954, Todd first fell into acting as a teenager since–as he puts it– “I wasn’t any good at basketball.” After 22 years in the game, and over 150 acting credits under his belt, Todd has carved out an impressive and enviable career—not bad for a geeky 6’5 teenager from Chocolate City. The Urban Daily chatted with Todd about his return as William Bludworth in the newest Final Destination movie,  his iconic role in Candyman , and the current state of the horror film genre. TUD: Tell us about the plot of Final Destination 5. Tony Todd: We have a new cast of young people with tragic demises and I have more than one scene. I like doing more than one scene, I like continuity (laughs) . There are a few theories going around as to who your character, Bludworth really is—one theory is that he’s death incarnate. What do you say to that? I think that’s too much of an easy choice, I mean how can you be death incarnate when you’re only in the movie for five minutes? Actually someone came up to me and said maybe Bludworth had cheated death himself.  I’ve never personally accepted he was the angel of death, or the emissary of death. Just a very unpopular guy. Why do you think the Final Destination franchise has remained so popular? Because it’s the perfect date movie.  Everybody loves a horror story because it’s a roller coaster ride –you wait for  the slow ride to the top then speed down with all the bumps, twists and turns.  If you’re a smart person, you bring your date and for every bump that goes on, you squeeze a little closer.  I think Final Destination is singularly responsible for more births in America in the last 10 years than any other movie. You might be on to something there. I know I’ve done the research.  I interview people when they leave the theatre, and when they see me they’re like “Oh my God!” That really freaks them out! Final Destination movies are known for their graphic death scenes.  Which ones are the most memorable to you? Well I’m a big fan of the first movie, because that was the template.  Jeffrey Reddick, the creator of  this franchise, is a genius.  In Final Destination 5 , the bridge collapse sequence is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Audiences still remember you from the Candyman movies. Do people still stop you in the street about that role? Candyman is almost 20 years old and not a single day goes by when someone doesn’t stop me in the street.  It was a great role and one of the greatest experiences in my life. Have your kids seen Candyman ? They didn’t watch it until they were well into their teens.  True story—When Candyman first came out, my daughter and I were Christmas shopping, and people were harassing us.  Finally my daughter puts down her shopping bag and said “That’s not Candyman! That’s my dad!” I will never forget that, because that’s when we really bonded. Let’s talk a little about your background.  When you were growing up, which actors or actresses did you look up to or admire? When I was a kid I really loved Humphrey Bogart.  But when I was in theater school, Robert DeNiro was my go-to guy.  I like good actors like Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman.  I grew up a poor kid to a single mom, so as an African-American actor I have a responsibility to hold the mirror up and reflect our stories.  I’m living the dream and also escaped the inevitable. Your first lead role in a movie was in the remake of   Night of The Living Dead . Your character in that movie has historical significance, as the original was the first horror movie to cast an African-American (Duane Jones) in the lead role.  What are you memories about being cast in that project? I actually saw the original while I was studying to be an actor, and watching Duane Jones I thought “Good, there’s hope.”  When I heard they were casting for the remake I ran to the casting office and told them they had to let me audition.  I think they already had someone in mind, but the casting director took a chance on me and gave me the job. It was my first leading role and my son was born around that same time. It was a chance to play a hero, so I was very appreciative. We shot the movie in Washington, Pennsylvania, singularly the most racist place in America.  The beautiful thing is all these people were lining up to play zombies, and if I wasn’t an actor, they wouldn’t have anything to do with me. You also do a lot of voice-over work as well. How did you fall into that? When I was younger, I wanted to do Disney movies but I could never get a role.  When I finally got a part in Transformers 2 I called my daughter and told her “Honey, I’m gonna be a Transformer!”  and she said “Grow up Dad!” But it paid her tuition, so there you go! What are your thoughts on the current state of the horror genre, and should actors of color be more open-minded to doing these types of movies? Television is dying because of the influx of reality shows, so I think smart horror movies like “Final Destination”  area great thing because it makes people think.  I’m not a fan of torture for torture’s sake.  That’s why you’ll never see me in Saw.  I think young African-American filmmakers and actors need to hold their heads up and know if a project is meant for them, they’ll get it. Tyler, The Creator Gets ‘Stupid’ In ‘BSD’ Video

‘I just thought it’d be funny if I ran on the beach in a wig,’ Tyler tells MTV News of NSFW clip. By Rob Markman Tyler, The Creator Photo: MTV News Due to the song’s explicit nature, “B— Suck D—” probably won’t go down as Tyler, The Creator ‘s most popular video, but it might be his funniest. Like the VMA-winning “Yonkers,” Wolf Haley directed the “BSD” clip, which premiered online October 11 and has already racked up more than a million YouTube views. “I just wanted to make a video that’s like the personality of me and my friends on a daily basis of just stupid sh–,” Tyler told MTV News. The Goblin track, which also features Odd Future members Jasper Dolphin and Taco, finds Tyler in one scene doing his best David Hasselhoff impersonation. At the start of his verse, the OFWGKTA frontman runs across a beach with no pants in an obvious “Baywatch” parody. “I just thought it’d be funny if I ran on the beach in a wig. There wasn’t that much thought put into it like any other video. I was just like, ‘I want a video for “BSD,” ‘ ” he said. Jasper is dressed in an orange tracksuit while working out for the cam; Taco, on the other hand, is in the kitchen cooking up a steak. His dish doesn’t look half bad either, until Taco spits on the concoction and then sits his bare bottom atop the raw cut of beef. “When I listen to the song, that’s what comes up: Taco cookin’, Jasper working out with really fat girls in a sh–ty setting and me running down a beach in slow motion not saying any of my f—ing lyrics,” Tyler said. In another scene, Tyler and his merry band of musical misfits take on rap video clich

‘Anonymous’ Director Believes Shakespeare Was ‘A Fraud’

As part of our Fall Movie Preview, ‘2012’ director Roland Emmerich explains why he’s traded action for historical drama. By Josh Wigler Joely Richardson and Jamie Campbell Bower in “Anonymous” Photo: Reiner Bajo/Columbia For his next trick, Roland Emmerich — the man who brought you such blockbusters as “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012” — will be taking you all the way back to the times of … Shakespeare? It’s perhaps not a conventional choice for a filmmaker who is best known for his over-the-top alien invasions and natural disasters, but make no mistake, “Anonymous” is a movie that is very near and dear to Emmerich’s heart. The project — which takes place during Elizabethan England and centers on Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans), the Earl of Oxford and a man who some believe to be the true author of Shakespeare’s works — has been in development for nearly a decade. Now, Emmerich’s ready to tell his story, with his take on the Man from Stratford’s real identity arriving in theaters on October 28. Click for photos from fall’s biggest flicks! MTV News’ Fall Movie Preview continues today with a conversation with Emmerich, who spoke with us about his interest in Shakespeare, the themes of succession and identity crises, how visual effects are actually working to keep budgets down, and whether or not he truly believes that Shakespeare was a fraud. MTV : “Anonymous” deals with conspiracies centering on Shakespeare and conflicts during Elizabethan England, but for you, at its core, what is this movie about? Roland Emmerich : In the foreground for people, it’s probably the whole issue of did [Shakespeare] write [his works] or did he not? But for me, it was also always about this time and succession. The most important thing in these days was, “Who will be the next king?” Especially Elizabeth’s [succession], being the virgin queen, there was a lot of insecurity. When you want to come up with a story to explain to people why it could have been that the wrong guy got credited, it has to have a really big reason. I kind of thought everything in Shakespeare is about the prince, it’s about succession. Half of his plays are pretty much about that. I kind of said, “This has to be the reason why he can’t put his name on it.” MTV : It’s also interesting when you consider a lot of his work focuses on doubles and dual identities. Emmerich : Exactly. It’s a lot about bastard children, the identity crisis of the young prince, you know? The court, the court intrigue, and about how power gets distributed by the king. I knew that the movie had to be about that. MTV : On the surface, “Anonymous” doesn’t seem like the kind of movie that fans of your films like “Independence Day” or “2012” would necessarily expect from you. What drew you to this? What made this story something you wanted to tell as a filmmaker? Emmerich : Well, first of all, you get older. [ Laughs ] I always was super interested in reading about history. I think history is kind of something that isn’t explored enough in movies, honest to god. I know this is kind of a relatively adult movie, but I said to myself, if I’m interested in something, I assume other people are too. This time around, it’s probably another crowd and another audience. But the movie also doesn’t have to perform that well to make money, so I’m kind of hopeful that Sony won’t be [left] there with empty pockets. MTV : You’ve been attached to this project and working on it for several years before the movie got made. How did “Anonymous” finally come together for you? Emmerich : I’ve been on this project for nine years. Around five years ago, Sony greenlit it, and we’d headed to England. We had a lot of money, and [we got] more and more, and it became too expensive of a movie. We also couldn’t quite get the cast. So we stopped it. But then I realized that this movie had to be done for a certain price. When I did “2012,” I realized that now with digital cameras and blue screens, you can do quite amazing things and you can cheapen a movie without making it look smaller. This movie, even if it costs very little, when people come out they’re asking, “How much did this thing cost?” And I’ll say, “Much less than you think!” [ Laughs ] Some people ask, “What was it, $70 [million]? $90?” And I say, “No, it was $30.” And they’re super surprised. I tell them, “Look, everyone keeps talking about this, the fact that one day, visual effects can help us to make movies cheaper.” And this was actually the first movie where visual effects helped to make a really, really big look, but it actually saved us tons of money. MTV : What was the research process like on “Anonymous”? What did you do to brush up your Shakespeare, so to speak? Emmerich : I never claimed to be a big Shakespeare scholar or anything. I’ve watched every movie that was made about his plays, which is a good way to get into William Shakespeare’s plays, because most of the time, the plays themselves — you get the highest grade of talent and I did that. I said to myself, “I’m not a theater director.” What we did was we looked for a theater director, and found one in Tamara Harvey, who’s very young but has worked under Mark Rylance at [Shakespeare’s Globe in London]. We had long discussions with Mark and some Shakespeare actors in London, and we tried to approach it like that. For me, it was very important to get the plays right and the work right. I wanted to glorify William Shakespeare; I didn’t want to destroy him. MTV : But at the core of this movie’s marketing campaign, there’s been that tantalizing four-word question: “Was Shakespeare a fraud?” Based on what you discovered in the process of making this movie, do you have your answer to that question? Emmerich : He was a fraud. I’m totally convinced. MTV : What makes you so convinced? Emmerich : I read pretty much everything on the Freudian side and the Oxford side and made my own opinion, you know? I’m not alone with this opinion. There are very famous people throughout history, a lot of writers and a lot of artists like Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Emerson, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Sigmund Freud. … There are so many people who were absolutely convinced of what I’m convinced about. And when you talk to Shakespeare scholars, they’re kind of totally biased, because they’ve lived their whole lives and written books about the Man from Stratford. Sure, they have to scream and yell and say this is all nonsense, but I think these guys over the next 20 or 30 years will not be able to uphold this. I think it’s not good to tell kids lies in school, and I’m saying, why not openly discuss that there’s a problem? I think to get access to William Shakespeare, the Man from Stratford, for kids today is totally boring. You cannot get this guy together with the plays. The plays are super complex and tell a lot about court life and themes that represent his time incredibly well, and then there’s this Bard from Stratford and Avon, a guy who, when you look at him, was probably a businessman. Odd Future Land ‘Jackass’-Inspired TV Show

‘Loiter Squad,’ produced by ‘Jackass’ creators Dickhouse, is set to air on Adult Swim next year. By James Montgomery Odd Future Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images As anyone who’s seen the video for Earl Sweatshirt’s “Earl” or Tyler, the Creator ‘s VMA-winning “Yonkers” can attest, Odd Future totally deserve their own “Jackass”-style TV show. And now, they’ve got one … thanks to the guys behind “Jackass.” Called “Loiter Squad,” the live-action series is set to air on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim next year and, according to a press release, will feature “sketches, man-on-the-street segments, pranks and music from Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All” (and, presumably, lots of loitering, too). Each episode will be 15 minutes long, and the show will be produced by Dickhouse Entertainment, the Johnny Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze partnership behind such fare as “Jackass,” “Rob & Big,” “Wildboyz” and “Nitro Circus.” “The Dickhouse sensibility provides a perfect match for the unique viewpoints, masterful pranking and artistic inclinations of the Odd Future crew,” the press release rather dutifully adds. Totally. “Loiter Squad” is just the latest addition to Odd Future’s eternally expanding empire . VMA Nominee Big Sean Gets Carjacked On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off,’ Best New Artist nominee reveals. By Kara Warner Big Sean Photo: MTV News Rising star and Best New Artist VMA nominee Big Sean might be riding high these days, but in the new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC reveals a not-so-starry moment from his teens. “When I was 17, I got a brand-new 2005 Chevy Impala. I was one of the only people with a new car so I was definitely enjoying it, having fun,” Sean recalled. “One day outside my house, you know sometimes when you’re blocked in, you have to move cars out the driveway and move them back in? I was just trying to hurry up and do it, so I left my car running, hopped out my and car hopped into another car to pull it into the driveway,” he explained. “Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off. I’m like ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Somebody stole my car!’ I was thinking, ‘Damn, I f—-d up.’ ” The Detroit native said that he and his mother called the police, but due to the number of carjackings in the area, their request wasn’t considered a high priority. “I had a tracking device on my car,” Sean said. “And we still couldn’t find my car.” One 2005 Chevy Impala aside, the “Finally Famous” lyricist hasn’t experienced the loss of any other prized possessions. For now he is focused on his music, and his first-ever VMA nomination. “Man, I was hype as hell,” Sean told MTV News upon learning of his nomination for Best New Artist . “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] the night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” he revealed. “I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator, and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
