Lonnie G. Bunch III Makes History As Smithsonian’s First Black Secretary

View post:

E ducator and historian Lonnie G. Bunch III has dedicated his career to the preservation of important facets of American history. After leading the creation and development of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Newark native will now serve as the Smithsonian Institution’s 14th secretary; making him the first Black person to be appointed to the position, NPR reported. Smithsonian names Lonnie Bunch III as new secretary, the first African American to lead the institution https://t.co/9e9BhKCGCW — The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) May 28, 2019 Bunch was selected by the Board of Regents to take on the role. He succeeds David Skorton who has served as the institution’s secretary since 2015. In his new position, Bunch will be responsible for steering the direction and driving growth for the Smithsonian as well as overseeing the daily operations of all of its libraries, museums, and the National Zoo. He began his journey with the Smithsonian nearly 30 years ago and has held several executive level positions at the National Museum of American History. When he became the director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture there was only one person on staff and no funding. Through his leadership the museum—which has over 40,000 artifacts that capture the essence of the Black experience—has attracted upwards of 4 million visitors. Bunch has also spearheaded capital campaigns for the Chicago Historical Society where he served as president from 2001 through 2005. One of his goals as secretary of the 173-year-old institution is to keep history relevant in a digital age. He wants the artifacts and information housed in the Smithsonian institutions to foster creativity and innovation. “It is important for the public to view the Smithsonian not simply as an addict of nostalgia, but as a cauldron of ideas of innovation and understanding that can be transformative for our country,” he said in a statement. “It must be an institution that is ripe with technology, an institution better suited to serve 21st century audiences, and an institution of research, of great collections, and of wonder that helps America understand itself and its world.” Bunch is slated to officially start his new position on June 16. Headline Heat: N.E.X.T. Singer R.L. Responds To Headlines About Bankruptcy, The Demise 90’s R&B Groups & More

Last time we heard from NEXT lead singer R.L , he was not too pleased about the way classic R&B songs and groups were being treated in this Internet age. He even confronted Internet sensation Nicholas Frazier over his “Why You Always Lying” video, a parody of NEXT’s biggest single “Too Close”, saying that he’s not too happy about someone turning his “life’s work” into a joke. R.L. recently stopped by to clear up some of the wildest headlines BOSSIP has written about him, and his sentiments about the lack of respect that the culture has for 90’s R&B groups hasn’t really changed. The “We Can’t Be Friends” singer also opened up about filing for bankruptcy and new music he wrote dedicated to his beautiful baby girl Rory Lane. Check it out in the video above.

This Is America: Meek Mill Reportedly Harassed & Threatened With Arrest At A Vegas Hotel [Video]

Source: Gilbert Carrasquillo / Getty According to TMZ , Meek Mill was denied from getting into Las Vegas’ Cosmopolitan Hotel Saturday after resort staff reportedly threatened to arrest him if he stepped onto the property. Meek posted a video on social media showing himself, his security team and The Cosmopolitan staff discussing why he wasn’t being allowed inside the Las Vegas Strip resort. View this post on Instagram Cosmopolitan hotel/casino going to extreme racist levels to keep too many black entertainers and black people …. they said they gone lock me up.. I’m like for what I’ve been once to a party with jayz ….. Some of these casinos have a bunch of Tatics to keep the level of blacks down …. but love to take our money!!!! This happens to a lot of black entertainers not just me either!! I felt crazy being put out by these white men for no reason! A post shared by Meek Mill (@meekmill) on May 25, 2019 at 4:12pm PDT   The shocking thing about the video was the staff saying that Mill had been trespassing at the resort, meaning security could detain him if he were seen on the property. Meek’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, released a statement about the Cosmopolitan. Tacopina writes, “… we have learned that the Cosmopolitan maintains a list of African American recording artists who should be denied access for no other reason than than their culture and skin color. Such course of conduct constitutes discrimination per se, in violation of state and federal law, and exposes you to significant monetary damages.” The letter also states, “…we urge you to promptly issue an apology to Mr. Williams and grant him immediate access.  In the event you fail to heed this one and only warning, we intend to pursue all legal recourse against you.”

New Book Highlights The Legacy Of Black Cyclist Marshall Taylor

Read the original post:

A n unsung Black athlete is finally getting the recognition that he deserves. Marshall ‘Major’ Taylor —a man who dominated cycling during the late 1800s—is being highlighted in a new book, Chicago PBS reported. Taylor was the world’s fastest athlete at the turn of the 20th century in a sport for which the wheels were just beginning to turn in the U.S. — cycling. https://t.co/JBxAIygShB — WTTW (Chicago PBS) (@wttw) May 15, 2019 The book, titled The World’s Fastest Man: The Extraordinary Life of Cyclist Major Taylor , America’s First Black Sports Hero , was penned by political reporter Michael Kranish . It delves into the racism that Taylor faced while competing during that era. Due to Jim Crow laws, he was banned from participating in several competitions and endured racially charged physical attacks during races. Taylor—who at one point was the world’s fastest cyclist—didn’t let the racial discrimination that he experienced deter him from cycling. In fact, he used all of the negative experiences as fuel to push forward and understood that what he was doing was something bigger than himself; he was opening up doors for generations of Black athletes to follow in his footsteps. Many star athletes would follow suit and lend their voices to social and political issues including Jackie Robinson , Muhammad Ali , Colin Kaepernick , LeBron James and Serena Williams . “He really was a civil rights icon for his day,” Kranish said in a statement. “He wrote extensively about racing not just for his glory. He wanted to show that if he could win a fair match against whites, that any Black could compete and triumph whatever field they tried, if they were given a fair shot.” Taylor is also the inspiration behind a new art exhibit slated to be unveiled next month. Artist Kadir Nelson —known for doing the cover art for rapper Drake ’s Nothing Was the Same album—will create a bronze sculpture of Taylor that will be on display at 3 World Trade Center.
