Gay Cop’s Porn Past Complicates Job, Revives Sexual Policing | Gay Rights | Change.org

Homophobia has many faces, many forms and many nameless companions. What looks like purely anti-gay activity may in fact be something far more insidious and complex, a fact made crystal clear by the murky case of openly gay police officer Michael Verdugo, who's currently fighting to keep his police certification after being booted for appearing in a gay porn. Verdugo maintains that his peers at the Hollywood, Florida Police Department were motivated by gay hate. Hollywood officials insist they felt misled by Verdugo's secrecy. Either way you cut it, however, we're seeing how sexual policing remains alive and well in the United States, and often arises on its own accord. Thirty-six year old Verdugo's woes began in 2008, when his stint on a reality show, HDTV's Design Star, led to the revelation that he had made a brief appearance in a skin flick called Rope Rituals, which came out five years before Verdugo became a cop. His superiors were not impressed. Though Verdugo had served on the force for seven years, and that scene — him tied up, naked and alone — was relatively vanilla when compared to the rest of the video, his higher-ups still put Verdugo on administrative leave. They claimed he had misled them by neglecting to tell them about Rope Rituals. Because, you know, you would include a porn made five years prior on a resume to become a cop. The suspended officer sees the situation very differently. “A one day job is not a job,” 36-year old Verdugo said of his involvement in the movie, which he filmed when he was 22-years old. “The film was just their way of dismissing me and getting rid of their gay officer.” He also contends that Hollywood police are working behind the scenes to keep him benched for good. Verdugo's allegations of homophobia seem plausible, especially since another out officer, Christina Rodriguez, has also come forward with charges of anti-gay attitudes on the Hollywood force. “It's difficult sometimes to keep [strong] when you don't have that strength behind you from within your safe haven of your own police department walls,” she said of how discrimination hindered her job performance. Even if Floridian officials do reinstate Vergudo's certification, and he can go on to fight crime in another part of the pan handle, they're still recommending that he attend “ethics training.” Journalist Tiffani Helberg reports, “The [Florida Department of Law Enforcement] said staff members recommended a 30-day suspension of Verdugo's certification and a probationary period of a year, plus ethics training.” No matter what happens with Verdugo's career, he's still being maligned as unethical. But let's pretend that this situation wasn't born from straight-up homophobia. Verdugo's private gay life has nothing to do with the firing; it was motivated simply by the sudden revelation that he had kept his cinematic history a secret. That doesn't mean, however, that his sex life hasn't influenced, however subconsciously, his colleagues' actions. There's no separating gay rights from gay sex. It's just impossible. Conservatives and other opponents too often cite the “ick factor” when lambasting same-sex love. “Don't hate the sinner, hate the sin,” they say. Verdugo's sexuality, and what he does with it, becomes even more “offensive” when coupled with another “sinful” commodity, pornography. Police and the public have historically and consistently clumped pornography and homosexuality, among other things, into one convenient category: “vice.” Such sexual outbursts offended the “normal” morals of a heterosexist society and were therefore worthy of repression. After many hard-fought battles, the restrictions on these activities have been relaxed somewhat; society, of course, doesn't shift so easily, and remnants of these straight-laced ways run deep in contemporary America. “The Rule of Law” has long gotten off on policing private sex lives, and it did a number on Verdugo. Supposing that Verdugo's colleagues were alright with his gay ways, the sudden realization of his sexuality, in video form, may have been too much to handle. Even if he had been straight and also in a “bondage” movie, such “deviant” behavior may still have rubbed Hollywood police the wrong way. If the Hollywood Police Department wants to prove they're not only LGBT inclusive, but that they're beyond 50s era sexual policing and moral judgments, they should grant Verdugo his wish: “I still want to be a cop. My goal — not a practical one — is to go back to Hollywood.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Girl Causes Panic By Playing Dead On Google Street View

When nine-year-old Azura dropped down to the pavement and pretended to be dead, she only wanted to frighten her friends. She didn't plan for the prank to be captured by a passing Google Street View van and scare the world. While the Google Street View van driver didn't even pause for a moment to worry about the girl, plenty of other people did: The oddly timed prank caused calls to the local police department as people worried that a child died in their neighborhood. http://gizmodo.com/5611668/girl-causes-panic-by-playing-dead-on-google-street-vi… added by: Sexirobot

Gingrich: Dems Teach The Unemployed To Prefer Government-Funded Poverty Over Honest Work | Political Correction

In an email to supporters yesterday, Newt Gingrich blamed Democrats for high unemployment and argued that “the extension of unemployment benefits has given people a perverse incentive to stay on unemployment rather than accept a job.” Gingrich cynically warns that Democrats are making jobless Americans “get so used to being unproductive that they are willing to accept welfare indefinitely instead of taking a job.” Gingrich is just the latest in a long line of Republicans to attack the unemployed for political gain. In reality, unemployment checks average about $300 per week, and cherry-picked anecdotes about “indefinite welfare” ignore the real source of high unemployment: a severe economic crisis brought about by Republican mismanagement. Gingrich: Companies Aren't Finding Qualified Hires And It's The Democrats' Fault Gingrich Cited Wall Street Journal Article In Arguing American Workers Prefer Unemployment Checks Over Wages. In an email to Human Events subscribers, Gingrich wrote: An article in the Wall Street Journal Monday painted a frustrating picture of the joblessness situation, showing that, despite our high unemployment, many firms are having trouble filling job openings. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, if job openings were getting filled at a normal rate, the unemployment rate would be 6.8% instead of 9.5%. So there are actually many jobs out there that need to be filled. Yet, in the worst recession since the Great Depression, many employers can't make hires. The article cites several reasons for this phenomenon, a few of which are long term trends such as our education system not producing enough qualified engineers. But others factors fall squarely on the backs of this administration and Congress. For instance, the extension of unemployment benefits has given people a perverse incentive to stay on unemployment rather than accept a job. The part-owner of a machine parts company, Mechanical Devices, is looking for as many as 40 new engineers, but is quoted in the article as saying many applicants at job fairs were “just going through the motions so they could collect their unemployment checks.” The article also quotes an engineer who admits he turned down more than a dozen offers because the salary would have been less than he made on welfare. This story encapsulates the problem of the long-term unemployed. The depth and length of this recession is at risk of creating a permanent pool of unemployed Americans, who get so used to being unproductive that they are willing to accept welfare indefinitely instead of taking a job. [Gingrich Email, 8/11/10, emphasis added] Republican Lawmakers Agree With Gingrich: Unemployed Americans Are Lazy And Stubborn Below are just a few of the many examples of Republicans blaming unemployment on laziness brought on by government checks. For a more complete list, see our full fact check HERE( http://politicalcorrection.org/factcheck/201007200002 ) and read more about the GOP's rhetoric on unemployment HERE( http://politicalcorrection.org/blog/201007270004 ). Reality Check: There Are About Five Unemployed Workers For Every Job Opening… Depart Of Labor Statistics Show There Are At Least Five Job Seekers For Every Opening. According to the New York Times: In June, there were fewer than five unemployed workers for each job opening, according to new Labor Department data. That is a less discouraging ratio than earlier this year, but the improvement may mainly be a result of workers who have given up looking for a job. The chart below shows the jobless worker/job opening ratio going back to 2000, the earliest year that the Labor Department keeps data on job openings. New York Times: Ratio Of Jobs To Job Seekers Is Probably Higher Because Many Jobless Are Not Counted In The Labor Dept. Statistics. According to the New York Times: “As of June, there were 4.98 workers per opening, compared with 5.09 the previous month. Both the number of job openings and the number of unemployed workers fell from May to June. The number of unemployed workers fell not because more people got jobs, but because hundreds of thousands of people dropped out of the labor force. In fact the labor force participation rate – that is, the portion of working-age people who choose to work or actively search for work – is currently at its lowest rate since 1984.” [New York Times, 8/11/10, emphasis added] …And Economists Agree: Unemployment Benefits Have A Tiny Effect On Unemployment Duration Key Researcher On Unemployment Benefits Says His Old Findings On Unemployment Benefits Are Outdated. According to the bipartisan Joint Economic Committee: “While earlier research suggested that the unemployment insurance program in the 1970s and 1980s had important disincentive effects, the current consensus is that these dated studies overstated the effects of unemployment insurance benefits on job search behavior. The older studies noted a jump in the fraction of workers who found a job just before they exhausted their benefits. In contrast, in testimony before the Joint Economic Committee, the author of one of the seminal papers in this earlier wave of research, Dr. Lawrence Katz, said that 'the most compelling research shows only modest impacts of UI extensions on the search effort and duration of unemployment of unemployment insurance recipients.' Katz pointed out that these studies overstate the overall impact of unemployment insurance benefits on the length of unemployment spells 'by ignoring the spillover effects of shorter unemployment spells for the other unemployed workers not receiving UI benefits.'” [“Does Unemployment Insurance Inhibit Job Search?” Joint Economic Committee, July 2010, emphasis added] added by: toyotabedzrock

The Political Compass: just how "liberal" are we, anyway?

Scholars & Rogues, an allegedly “liberal” blog, subjects itself to the Political Compass test to see how liberal it really is. Then its writers offer some thoughts and critiques on the PC method, which is better than simple “left v right” thinking, but a far cry from perfect. The Compass is a helpful tool for all of us, though, in that it makes us think a little more critically about what some of our overworked political labels really mean. And don't mean. added by: hoosierdaddy

Google buying UAV drones for Street View spying

Citing a German news report, Techeye.net reports that Google has purchased small UAV “microdrone” aircraft manufactured by Germany's microdrone GmbH, perhaps for use to augment the company's Street View mapping data. Techeye says: The UAVs being flogged are mini helicopters with cameras attached that can be flown about all over the place. They're quiet and resemble sci-fi UFOs for the vertically challenged alien. They can fly up to 80km per hour, so Microdrone CEO Sven Juerss suggests they'll be brilliant for mapping entire neighbourhoods really quickly and relatively cheaply. Even before Google started data mining on open web networks its Street View operations were controversial, with Google Maps picking up on people who didn't exactly want their faces plastered all over the internet. With the kind of high-angle aerial shots this sort of kit can achieve, it boggles the mind as to the sort of images that may be accidentally captured. Our take: Skepticism is warranted, and outrage is probably premature. Our understanding is that FAA certification procedures for civilian UAVs operating in domestic airspace are not yet in place, so it is not clear that the regular operation of such UAVs would be legal — never mind prudent from a privacy or public-relations point of view. http://telstarlogistics.typepad.com/telstarlogistics/2010/08/does-google-plan-to… added by: slagface

Security Guards Chokes Deaf Shoppers – Shoplifting Suspects, Video

Security Guards Chokes Deaf Shoppers – Shoplifting Suspects, Video There are more questions than answers regarding this troubling video that seems to show a security guard choking a suspected shoplifter while his friend tries to intervene – both of whom appear to be deaf. Here is what we know from watching the video, listening to the commentary and reading the post of the youtube user who took the video. Apparently, two deaf shoppers were leaving XXI in Hollywood when the store alarm was triggered but the pair continued walking with their shopping bags (they are reportedly deaf). The video picks it up from there as one man is being choked by a security guard while his friend (clearly with a speech impediment) tries to help, gesticulating franticly that he has receipts. Meanwhile, the security guard is choking the deaf shoplifting suspect so hard he is turning blue. Some people in the crow that have gathered are upset but do nothing to intervene while man video tapes the choking incident. A security guard tries to stop the video taping of the incident to no avail. The suspects are taken back inside XXI Hollywood store. At times store security guards like the ones here in XXI shoplifting video seem to operate with impunity where beyond the limits of what they are legally allowed to do. It is one thing to ask for receipts it is another to tackle someone and choke because they are mere shoplifting suspects. Lets hope someone is looking into this incident and the whole truth comes out. They violated these men's rights by ignoring the Americans with Disabilities Act. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fRv–C_vao&feature=player_embedded# ! added by: ArchDruid

Explorer Wakes Up In Jaws Of A Polar Bear

They were on an Arctic expedition to be the first team to paddle 1,250 miles around the island chain. Of course, there are dangers when camping in the Arctic so they protected thier tents with an early warning system and protection. However, for Sebastian Plur Nilssen the system failed and he woke up to find a Polar bear in his tent. The bear dragged him out by his head, but Nilssen couldn't shot the bear because it had broken the shotgun in the struggle. It is legal to shot a Polar Bear in self defence, and that's what his friend Ludvig Fjeld did. Nilssen in currently in hospital recovering, but told the press the entire story of the attack. “The 23-year-old was dragged screaming from the tent, with his head clamped in the animal's jaws. The adult male bear flung the young explorer's body from side to side in an attempt to stun him, a technique typically used on its usual prey of seals. The polar bear's teeth pierced Mr Nilssen's lung as it fought for a better grip and narrowly missed a main artery in his neck. “It was so strong I could not fight, I grabbed for my shotgun and tried to shoot it but [the polar bear] had snapped [the gun] in half,” he said. “It must have been only a minute I was in his jaws but it felt like forever. “It was a big bear, at one point it stood up on its back legs with me in its mouth, I was 2.5 metres off the ground and it seemed very high.” “When I fired the first shot, the bear dropped him, but I had to fire four more to make sure it was dead. But despite his brush with death, Mr Nilssen said he was not angry at the bear, speculating that it carried out its unusual attack on humans because it was hungry.”-Yahoo. added by: Mcellie
