New York Judge stops sale of Sarah Palin condoms

New York – Although still available online, a judge in New York has put an end to the sales of condoms adorned with images of either Sarah Palin or President Obama sold by two street vendors in New York — the men have been condemned to a day of community service. Two unlicensed street vendors have been told to stop selling Barack Obama and Sarah Palin condoms in the streets of New York. While the men claimed that their products contained political messages, which should exempt the vendors from needing an appropriate license, the judge saw things differently and ruled that selling condoms was pure business. The men got off with a slap on the wrist, though, because they were sentenced to merely one day of community service — very little considering they had been selling the goofy condoms for about two years. The story has been reported in the New York Daily News, yet it is Politico who supplies us with the information that the condoms are still available online, at this dedicated website. The Palin version features a photograph of the ex Alaska governor in front of a caribou, beneath the slogan “When abortion is not an option,” while the Obama package shows a portrait of the president with the text “ultimate stimulus package”, yet also warning that “hope is not a form of protection.” I don't see how this is illegal, they are both political figures. added by: toyotabedzrock

Matt Taibbi–Wall Street’s Big Win

Matt Taibbi's latest article in Rolling Stone giving a good analysis and criticism of Congress' “historical” financial reform legislation. Here's a snippet: “But Dodd-Frank was neither an FDR-style, paradigm-shifting reform, nor a historic assault on free enterprise. What it was, ultimately, was a cop-out, a Band-Aid on a severed artery. If it marks the end of anything at all, it represents the end of the best opportunity we had to do something real about the criminal hijacking of America's financial-services industry. During the yearlong legislative battle that forged this bill, Congress took a long, hard look at the shape of the modern American economy – and then decided that it didn't have the stones to wipe out our country's one

Colbert: Fox News Can’t Tell Black People Apart (VIDEO)

Stephen Colbert said last night that he thinks it was an “innocent mistake” that Greta Van Susteren used footage of Shirley Sherrod instead of Maxine Waters the other day on her Fox News show. “It could have happened to anyone…whose producers can't tell black people apart.” Colbert also pointed out that though Fox News has the highest ratings in cable news, only 1.38% of their viewers are black. He had his people break down who those viewers are, and found that “45% are trapped in the waiting room of a Jiffy Lube, 7% are white people who just enjoy watching Fox News in blackface, 25% said Glenn Beck's name three times in the mirror and his show appeared, and the remaining 23% is Juan Williams.” added by: TimALoftis

The 1 Party War Train – Democrats & Republicans Both Pushed For Iraq War

The 1 party republican/democrat war train pushed for the war in Iraq. Most people understand the republicans are warmongers, that much is obvious. What many falsely believe is that the democrats are peacemongers. Well let’s take a look at the history of how the Iraq War began. Fearmongering lies in both parties. http://www.conservativedeclaration.com/2010/08/the-1-party-war-train-democrats-r… added by: shanklinmike

BP faced with $10 billion lawsuit over Texas City toxic release

Just as BP began celebrating a proclaimed success in its Gulf of Mexico catastrophe, the company now finds itself in the woeful position of facing a $10 billion lawsuit over a 40-day toxic chemical release in Texas City, Texas earlier this year. A $10 billion class action lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of 2,000 claimants against oil behemoth BP after the company engaged in a 40-day upset during April and May that released at least 538,000 pounds of known toxins into the Texas City skies. The event began just two weeks before the company became very well-known over its Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico. Tony Buzbee, a Texas attorney who also represents Gulf coast residents impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, filed the suit on Tuesday for his clients seeking compensation for “health effects including all symptoms associated with acute benzene exposure,” according to The Telegraph( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/7925565/BP-hit-… ). As reported earlier by Digital Journal( http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/294675 ), the toxic leak, or upset, occurred at BP’s Texas City refinery from April 6 to May 16, releasing hundreds of thousands of pounds of toxins into the air, including benzene, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. In a ProPublica( http://www.propublica.org/article/bp-texas-refinery-had-huge-toxic-release-just-… ) report of the incident, company officials were aware of the situation, underestimated its severity, and kept the plant in production to allay the chance of investors’ worries. It notes “the company’s corporate culture favors production and profit margins over safety and the environment. The 40-day release echoes in several notable ways the runaway spill in the Gulf. BP officials initially underestimated the problem and took steps in the days leading up to the incident to reduce costs and keep the refinery online.” Buzbee, already involved in legal action against BP as he represents 15 Deepwater Horizon rig workers, dozens of fisherman, dock workers, and restaurants – all impacted by the Gulf of Mexico debacle – is a prominent Houston lawyer with a solid record in winning settlements from oil companies, Mother Jones reports( http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2010/06/rigs-fire-i-told-you-was-gonna-happen ). The lawsuit over the Texas City incident alleges “tens of thousands of individuals were injured and had his or her long-term health put in jeopardy after being exposed to extremely high levels of Benzene and other toxic chemicals while working at the BP Texas City Refinery or by simply living or working in Texas City,” according to Yahoo News( http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100803/bs_yblog_upshot/bp-faces-10-billio… ). The lawyer is seeking “punitive damages against BP in excess of $10 billion.” added by: toyotabedzrock

How Did This Indiana Hospital End Up Refusing Care to a Woman Because She’s Transgender? / Queerty

Erin Vaught headed for Indiana's Ball Memorial Hospital when she found herself coughing up blood. When she arrived at the emergency room, she was “treated,” all right. With transphobic behavior by the hospital staff, who eventually refused her care. In a disgusting episode of the exact opposite of the Hippocratic Oath, hospital staff laughed and taunted Erin over being transgender. One nurse asked Erin's wife Amanda whether Erin “was a he or a she? Or a he-she?” Others referred to her as “it” and a “transvestite.” And then Erin was told she could not be treated because of her “condition.” No, not her medical condition, of which Erin didn't know what the problem was (hence the visit to the hospital), but her “transvestite condition.” Ball Memorial Hospital, whose Facebook page was flooded with messages after Erin posted about it, says it prides itself on “compassion,” “respect” and “customer care/service.” It does not have a policy including transgender people. added by: toyotabedzrock
