17 yr old daughter of US Ambassador dies in fall from 20th story ledge after clubbing all night.

The 17-year-old daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Thailand slipped off her shoes and climbed out onto a window ledge Friday at a Manhattan apartment before plummeting more than 20 stories to her death, police said. Nicole John fell at about 4:15 a.m. from the top floor of the 25-story Herald Towers, police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. Her body landed on a third-floor ledge, a camera nearby. It's not clear whether she had been trying to take a photo when she died, and her death is believed to be accidental. The girl's father, Eric John, was appointed U.S. ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand in 2007. John, an incoming freshman at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, was thought to have been drinking. Ilan Nassimi, 25, who rents the apartment, was arrested later Friday on charges of giving alcohol to a minor, police said. He was awaiting arraignment in Manhattan court and it wasn't clear if he had a lawyer. Police say John had been out with partying with friends at Tenjune, a club in the trendy Meatpacking District, before the group headed back to Nassimi's apartment at West 34th Street near the Empire State Building at around 2 a.m. Friday. Police believe the apartment might have been cleaned up by the time investigators arrived, but they think about a dozen people were there and had been drinking. The medical examiner was scheduled to perform an autopsy and toxicology tests Saturday. John had graduated from the International School in Bangkok and had a fake Brazilian ID that gave her age as 23 or 24. Pages from a blog believed to be hers portray a smart, artistic young girl with a wild streak, eager to begin college. “Reading. Partying. Lucid dreaming. Night terrors. Deep eyes. Good food” she wrote as a description of herself on a Tumblr site, a hodgepodge of quotes, photos and journal entries. “My childhood is over but that doesn't mean playtime is,” another entry reads. In one entry a week ago she references her Brazilian ID, saying she'd never been caught using it. “It's really good, it's never been rejected,” she wrote. In other entries, she posits on what her life will be like after college and how she's looking forward to returning to New York. “I go back August 17th. I love Bangkok, but it's so toxic for my mind,” she wrote. “I'm not happy here; not like I am in NYC. Oh well, there's downs and then there's ups. Just gotta get up outta that gutter.” Kristin Kneedler, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, said they were just getting details and had no immediate comment. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the John family during this very difficult time,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said. “We ask that you respect their privacy as they mourn the tragic loss of their daughter Nicole.” An aunt reached in Kentucky said the family had no comments beyond what the State Department said. Parsons said in a statement that the university's management team was working to provide comfort and support to those affected by John's death. “Losing a member of the community is extremely difficult for students, faculty and staff just as we begin a new semester,” the school said in a statement. The building manager was called by someone in the apartment who noticed John wasn't there, and he found John's body and called authorities, police said. Witnesses on the street also called 911. http://www.nowpublic.com/world/nicole-john-us-diplomats-daughter-fall-death added by: onemalefla

13 yr old motorcycle racer killed at Grand Prix Race.

The U.S Grand Prix Racers Union said Monday that it plans to review its safety measures after the death of a 13-year-old motorcycle rider. Chief steward Stewart Aitken-Cade said series officials will discuss what happened in Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and possible ways— including new age limits—to prevent fatalities in a sport where teenage competitors are the norm. A formal investigation, however, is not planned. AdChoices “I don’t believe there are grounds for anything drastic,” Aitken-Cade said in a phone interview. “That doesn’t mean we’re not going to look at anything that we can do to prevent something like this from happening again. This is the first accident we’ve had like this in nine years, and that’s a tremendous safety record.” Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., died Sunday after he fell off his motorcycle during a warm-up lap and was run over by a 12-year-old rider from Flushing, N.Y. Lenz is the youngest driver or rider to be killed at the 101-year-old Indianapolis Motor Speedway and, series officials said, he was the first rider to be killed in their series. Autopsy results released Monday confirmed Lenz died of multiple blunt force trauma. The 12-year-old rider, Xavier Zayat, was not injured but did not race. Aitken-Cade said the boy and his family left the pits after the crash. When Lenz fell off his bike, still photos show him sitting on the track with his arms raised. A few moments later, Aitken-Cade and speedway officials both confirmed, Lenz stood up and started waving his arms and that’s when Zayat hit him. “You want to make yourself as visible as possible, and that’s when you hope the safety lessons kick in,” Aitken-Cade said. “Most racing schools teach that it is safer to stay down if there are bikes flying around, but there area some different schools of thought on that.” Aitken-Cade did not say either rider was at fault. The speedway does have video of the accident but will not release it. Track workers, Zayat and his family were all offered counseling at the speedway, and Aitken-Cade promised Monday to provide whatever help the families need. The race series features some remarkably young riders. The series requires riders to submit a resume with at least two years of racing experience and results. Aitken-Cade said the series must verify both the starts and the finishes before a rider can compete. No riders younger than 12 are permitted to race on 125cc bikes, and that age limit jumps to 15 for the 250cc bikes. “Twelve, that’s as low as we’ll go on that—with the proven experience,” Aitken-Cade said. “We can’t just have a kid off the street that decides he wants to be the next MotoGP star to come in and race. We will not allow that.” Asked if the series would consider raising those age limits, Aitken-Cade said: “We’ll look at all aspects of this.” The ages of the two boys involved in Sunday’s crash raised questions about whether riders who aren’t even old enough to obtain a driver’s license should be racing vehicles that can top 120 mph. Yet there is a long list of stars who were racing as young teens or preteens. Three-time Indy winner Helio Castroneves started competing in go-karts at age 14. IndyCar’s Danica Patrick started racing at age 10 and even left the U.S. to compete in Europe as a teen. Four-time Cup champ Jeff Gordon was driving Quarter Midgets at age 5, and two-time Cup winner Tony Stewart raced go-karts at age 7. The motorcycle series seem an even younger arena. Americans Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP world champ, and Ben Spies, the Indy MotoGP pole winner, each started racing at age 5. “With youth sports, whether it’s football, basketball, soccer, water sports or whatever, there are injuries from time to time and there are fatalities from time to time,” speedway spokesman Fred Nation said. “But when you have them in an organized sport, in a controlled environment and safety people around, we think that’s a lot safer than having kids running around on four-wheelers through the woods. So we’re comfortable in supporting youth motorsports.” added by: onemalefla

Glenn Beck: I Wore A Bulletproof Vest To Rally At My Wife’s Request

Glenn Beck spent his entire show tonight discussing various details from his Restoring Honor rally this weekend. Beck took (perhaps not surprisingly) great issue with some of the coverage of the rally, namely that the media was low-balling the numbers of people who attended. He also pointed out the peaceful nature of the crowd, and the fact there were no arrests. Interestingly, Beck confirmed what a number of people attending the event had speculated: he was indeed wearing a bulletproof vest. Said Beck: “I was wearing it because my wife asked me to wear it.” Beck also noted that while he offered Alveda King one she declined. added by: TimALoftis

Unfazed by `The Cove,’ Taiji’s Fishermen Prepare to Resume Dolphin Hunt

Fishermen in Taiji, whose annual dolphin slaughter was depicted in the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove,” say they will resume the hunt next week because the 400-year-old tradition is the foundation of their industry. “We have no intention to stop hunting dolphins,” Miyato Sugimori, administrative chief of the Taiji Town Fisheries Association, said in an Aug. 25 interview. “Our young fishermen can’t continue to live in this town without the hunt.” Of Japan’s annual quota of 20,000 dolphins, about 1,500 are killed or sold to aquariums by fishermen in the town in Wakayama prefecture, south of Osaka. Taiji’s practice of “oikomi,” a method of hunting in which dolphins are herded into a bay for slaughter, drew worldwide criticism after the documentary was released. “It’s a horrific way to kill them,” said Sakae Hemmi, a spokeswoman for Elsa Nature Conservancy, a Japanese environmental protection group. “Even if they let them go, the structure of the dolphins’ group is disrupted.” Japan exported 56 live dolphins to countries including China, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey in 2008, receiving an average of 5.2 million yen per dolphin, according to Elsa Nature Conservancy, which cited Ministry of Finance statistics. Dolphin meat sells for about 1,000 yen a kilogram in Taiji, Sugimori said. The lowest grade of tuna sold in a local supermarket costs three times as much. added by: jefftego

Development of Tiny Thorium Reactors Could Wean the World Off Oil In Just Five Years

An abundant metal with vast energy potential could quickly wean the world off oil, if only Western political leaders would muster the will to do it, a UK newspaper says today. The Telegraph makes the case for thorium reactors as the key to a fossil-fuel-free world within five years, and puts the ball firmly in President Barack Obama's court. Thorium, named for the Norse god of thunder, is much more abundant than uranium and has 200 times that metal's energy potential. Thorium is also a more efficient fuel source — unlike natural uranium, which must be highly refined before it can be used in nuclear reactors, all thorium is potentially usable as fuel. The Telegraph says thorium could be used as an energy amplifier in next-generation nuclear power plants, an idea conceived by Nobel laureate Carlo Rubbia, former director of CERN. Known as an accelerator-driven system, it would use a particle accelerator to produce a proton beam and aim it at lump of heavy metal, producing excess neutrons. Thorium is a good choice because it has a high neutron yield per neutron absorbed. Thorium nuclei would absorb the excess neutrons, resulting in uranium-233, a fissile isotope that is not found in nature. Moderated neutrons would produce fissioned U-233, which releases enough energy to power the particle accelerator, plus an excess that can drive a power plant. Rubbia says a fistful of thorium could light up London for a week. The idea needs refining, but is so promising that at least one private firm is getting involved. The Norwegian firm Aker Solutions bought Rubbia's patent for this thorium fuel cycle, and is working on his design for a proton accelerator. The Telegraph says this $1.8 billion (

What if a hurricane hits Long Island?

Hurricane Earl is quickly becoming a major storm and the latest forecasts have it moving dangerously close to the south east of Long Island. There are many experts who say our area is long overdue for a powerful hurricane. New York is second most vulnerable to a major hurricane due to factors like population density, amount of property near coastal areas and the length of time since the last major hurricane. According to the National Weather Service: – every 17 years we should be hit by a Category 1 hurricane – every 39 years we should be hit by a Category 2 hurricane – every 68 years in Nassau County – and 70 years in Suffolk County – we should be hit by a Category 3 storm. So what would happen? Would we see massive evacuations like in the gulf? Or would people here, known for their skepticism, decide to stay put? Some Snippets: -The George Washington and Narrows bridges would have be closed before landfall since they are high up and will experience hurricane force winds before sea level. -Ferry service would have to be stopped six to twelve hours before landfall. -a high Cat 3 or low Cat 4 could flood the Holland and Battery Tunnels and JFK could be under a storm surge of 12 to 20 feet! Obama: ‘I Can’t Spend All My Time With My Birth Certificate Plastered On My Forehead’

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams that aired yesterday, President Obama addressed the lingering rumors about his birth and religion, condemning what he calls a “network of misinformation” and taking a swipe at the birther movement. “We went through some of this during the campaign,” Obama said in response to a question about the rising number of Americans who think he's a Muslim. “There is a mechanism, a network of misinformation that in a new media era can get churned out their constantly.” “I will always put my money on the American people and I'm not going to be worrying too much about whatever rumors are floating out there,” Obama said. Even facing the beliefs of a number of Americans “as sizable as this?” Williams asked. “I can't spend all my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead. The facts are the facts,” Obama responded. added by: TimALoftis
