Muslims pray less than 80 feet from Pentagon’s 9/11 crash site

While Americans are bitterly debating the proposed building of a mosque near New York's ground zero, Muslims have been praying for years less than 80 feet from where another hijacked jetliner struck. The Pentagon chapel is part of a memorial to the 184 people killed in 2001 when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 flew into the west side of the Pentagon and plowed through three of the building's five office rings. As part of its massive renovation, the Pentagon opened the nondenominational chapel in November 2002. The chapel hosts a daily prayer group and weekly worship service for Muslims and provides similar services for Jews, Hindus, Mormons, Protestants, Catholics and Episcopalians. Pentagon officials say that no one in the military or the families of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has ever protested. They describe the 80-seat chapel as a peaceful place where some 300 to 400 Pentagon employees come to pray each week. The goal of the Pentagon chaplain office, which runs the chapel, is to “provide assistance and support for the religious, spiritual and morale needs of all service members and employees,” said Army spokesman George Wright. A proposal to build an Islamic cultural center near ground zero in New York has prompted angry protests by victims of the 2001 attacks, which were done in the name of Islam. A majority of New Yorkers say they are opposed to the plan. More @ link added by: Future_America

NATO Strikes Kill 3 Afghan Civilians, 3 Police

Top NATO officials are constantly warning that the most important part of their long term war strategy in Afghanistan must include avoiding killing civilians and building up the nation’s police force, but they appear to have failed on both counts yesterday, launching a pair of attacks that killed three police and three civilians. The civilians were killed when NATO launched an air strike against a vehicle. Ground troops had previously killed six people who got out of the vehicle in the Farah Province then ordered an air strike against it. When they searched the scene they found a woman and two children had been killed in the strike. Meanwhile in the northern Jowzjan Province NATO helicopters were called in to attack “insurgents” that the area. They fired a hellfire missile which killed at least three police and wounded several others. In both cases NATO officials expressed “deep regret” for the killings and promised “step-by-step investigating into what went wrong.” The attacks were just the latest in a series of strikes throughout the week that left a number of civilians dead. On Wednesday hundreds of Afghans launched a protest over the killing of three civilians in a night raid. NATO also admitted to killing a farmer in Kandahar. NATO also admitted to air strikes against a home on Sunday which killed at least five civilians http://news.antiwar.com/2010/08/21/nato-strikes-kill-three-afghan-civilians-thre… added by: shanklinmike

Present Day Judge Dredd? Georgia Judge Kills Home Intruder!

Judge Carlisle Overstreet shot a killed an intruder that broke into his home Friday morning. 20 year old, white male, John E. ''Killa'' Howard jr. was on probation for three burglaries and a shop-lifting offense. When he and an accomplice broke a glass door with a rock and entered the Judge's home. The Judge heard voices, got his gun and saw Howard coming down the stairs with a bandana coving his face and socks on his hands. Overstreet fired once striking Howard in the chest. Howard was taken to MCG (medical college of georgia) were he was pronounced dead. Authorities said Howard was un-armed. A lap top computer was missing, taken by the 2nd burglar. Richmond County Sheriff R. Strength said his office advocates that people be armed and follow the Judge's example. ''We support that 100%. If someone breaks into your home, we expect and hope that what Judge Overstreet did would be done by any other citizen.'' says the Sheriff. Overstreet's home had an unrelated break-in in 2008. Scaring his wife but not harming her, she later that year died of cancer. William Omar Jacobs, a 22 year old black male later turned himself in as the 2nd suspect and was booked on burglary charges. added by: thetrimsmith

In California, pot not just for stoners and sick anymore

John Wade, 43, a San Francisco commercial lighting specialist, takes a quick hit from a marijuana cigarette on the golf course to steady himself before putting. Sarika Simmons, 35, of San Diego County, sometimes unwinds after her children are asleep with tokes from a fruit-flavored cigar filled with pot. And retiree Robert Girvetz, 78, of San Juan Capistrano, recently started anew — replacing his occasional martini with marijuana. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2012632446_potlife16.html?prmi… added by: JackHerer

ISRAEL’S PRE-ELECTION ATTEMPT TO DEFLECT A NEW 9/11 INVESTIGATION By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor

Nila Sagadevan is an aeronautical engineer and a pilot. There are some who maintain that the mythical 9/11 hijackers, although proven to be too incompetent to fly a little Cessna 172, had acquired the impressive skills that enabled them to fly airliners by training in flight simulators. What follows is an attempt to bury this myth once and for all, because I’ve heard this ludicrous explanation bandied about, ad nauseam, on the Internet and the TV networks—invariably by people who know nothing substantive about flight simulators, flying, or even airplanes. A common misconception non-pilots have about simulators is how “easy” it is to operate them. They are indeed relatively easy to operate if the objective is to make a few lazy turns and frolic about in the “open sky”. But if the intent is to execute any kind of a maneuver with even the least bit of precision, the task immediately becomes quite daunting. And if the aim is to navigate to a specific geographic location hundreds of miles away while flying at over 500 MPH, 30,000 feet above the ground the challenges become virtually impossible for an untrained pilot. And this, precisely, is what the four hijacker pilots who could not fly a Cessna around an airport by themselves are alleged to have accomplished in multi-ton, high-speed commercial jets on 9/11. For a person not conversant with the practical complexities of pilotage, a modern flight simulator could present a terribly confusing and disorienting experience. These complex training devices are not even remotely similar to the video games one sees in amusement arcades, or even the software versions available for home computers. In order to operate a modern flight simulator with any level of skill, one has to not only be a decent pilot to begin with, but also a skilled instrument-rated one to boot — and be thoroughly familiar with the actual aircraft type the simulator represents, since the cockpit layouts vary between aircraft. The only flight domains where an arcade/PC-type game would even begin to approach the degree of visual realism of a modern professional flight simulator would be during the take-off and landing phases. During these phases, of course, one clearly sees the bright runway lights stretched out ahead, and even peripherally sees images of buildings, etc. moving past. Take-offs—even landings, to a certain degree—are relatively “easy”, because the pilot has visual reference cues that exist “outside” the cockpit. But once you’ve rotated, climbed out, and reached cruising altitude in a simulator (or real airplane), and find yourself en route to some distant destination (using sophisticated electronic navigation techniques), the situation changes drastically: the pilot loses virtually all external visual reference cues, and is left entirely at the mercy of an array of complex flight and navigation instruments to provide situational cues (altitude, heading, speed, attitude, etc.) In the case of a Boeing 757 or 767, the pilot would be faced with an EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrumentation System) panel comprised of six large multi-mode LCDs interspersed with clusters of assorted “hard” instruments. These displays process the raw aircraft system and flight data into an integrated picture of the aircraft situation, position and progress, not only in horizontal and vertical dimensions, but also with regard to time and speed as well. When flying “blind”, I.e., with no ground reference cues, it takes a highly skilled pilot to interpret, and then apply, this data intelligently. If one cannot translate this information quickly, precisely and accurately (and it takes an instrument-rated pilot to do so), one would have ZERO SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. I.e., the pilot wouldn’t have a clue where s/he was in relation to the earth. Flight under such conditions is referred to as “IFR”, or Instrument Flight Rules. And IFR Rule #1: Never take your eyes off your instruments, because that’s all you have! The corollary to Rule #1: If you can’t read the instruments in a quick, smooth, disciplined, scan, you’re as good as dead. Accident records from around the world are replete with reports of any number of good pilots — I.e., professional instrument-rated pilots — who ‘bought the farm’ because they ‘lost it’ while flying in IFR conditions. Let me place this in the context of the 9/11 hijacker-pilots. These men were repeatedly deemed incompetent to solo a simple Cessna-172 — an elementary exercise that involves flying this little trainer once around the patch on a sunny day. A student’s first solo flight involves a simple circuit: take-off, followed by four gentle left turns ending with a landing back on the runway. This is as basic as flying can possibly get. Not one of the hijackers was deemed fit to perform this most elementary exercise by himself. When professional airline pilots, the majority trained by the United States Air Force, were asked to recreate the New York 9/11 attack in a flight simulator, two thirds failed entirely. None could duplicate the Pentagon attack at all. This is what the pilots had to say: “Regarding your comments on flight simulators, several of my colleagues and I have tried to simulate the ‘hijacker’s’ final approach maneuvers into the towers on our company 767 simulator. We tried repeated tight, steeply banked 180 turns at 500 mph followed by a fast rollout and lineup with a tall building. More than two-thirds of those who attempted the maneuver failed to make a ‘hit’. How these rookies who couldn’t fly a trainer pulled this off is beyond comprehension.” .Much more at the link…… http://canadiansforpalestine.ning.com/profiles/blogs/israels-preelection-attempt… added by: treewolf39

Man Commits Suicide On Stage at Swell Season Concert

SF Weekly reports that a man committed suicide last night at a Swell Season show in Saratoga, California. The suicide happened while the band was on stage, between songs. The man jumped from the roof of the Mountain Winery, falling about three stories and landing onstage. According to witnesses quoted in the SF Weekly report, the man landed a few feet away from Swell Season co-leader Glen Hansard. Doctors in the audience attempted to revive him. Afterward, paramedics tried and then abandoned CPR. The show immediately ended. Billboard has a statement from the Swell Season: “The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the unfortunate events of last night. Their hearts go out to the victim and his friends and family.” The man's name has not yet been released. http://pitchfork.com/news/39819-man-commits-suicide-on-stage-at-swell-season-con… added by: slagface

Wikileaks Lawyer Says Pentagon Given Access to Unpublished Secret Documents – Newsweek

A U.S. lawyer representing the whistleblowing web site Wikileaks says U.S. government officials have been given codes and passwords granting them online access to official U.S. government documents that Wikileaks so far has not published. Timothy Matusheski, a lawyer from Hattiesburg, Miss., who says he represents whistleblowers and has been in touch with both Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and at least one government official involved in investigations of Wikileaks, said Wikileaks had set up a “secure channel” through which authorized users could access the unpublished material. He said credentials for using this Web site had been forwarded to representatives of the U.S. government whom he did not identify. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Matusheski said U.S. officials had even been given access to an online mechanism where they would be able to redact what they consider potentially sensitive information. Matusheski says he himself has only been given a portion of the codes needed to access the unpublished material. So, he says, the U.S. government now has wider and more complete access to the material than he did. added by: toyotabedzrock
