Dozens of whales die after 58 are stranded on New Zealand beach By the CNN Wire Staff August 20, 2010 10:35 a.m. EDT Rescuers attempt to refloat 15 stranded pilot whales at Karikari beach in the far north of New Zealand. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * Fifteen out of 58 pilot whales are still alive * The whales were found Friday morning. officials say * Officials are trying to get them back out to sea; iniitial attempts failed (CNN) — A beachgoer in a remote area of northern New Zealand found a horrific sight Friday morning — 58 pilot whales stranded on Karikari Beach. When conservation officials arrived, only 15 of the animals were still alive. The whales probably became stranded sometime during the night, said Carolyn Smith of New Zealand's Department of Conservation in Kaitaia, and that's why so many died before being discovered. “The focus for everyone right now was to try to refloat the survivors,” Smith said. To do that, officials will position the whales to face out to sea and hope that they swim back out when high tide comes. The whales “need to be held in the water for at least half an hour to allow them to reorientate themselves, before being released to hopefully swim back out to sea,” the conservation department said. A first attempt to refloat the whales was not successful Friday night. Conservation officials were going to monitor the animals overnight in the hope of trying again, maybe after moving them to Matai Bay, where sea conditions could be more favorable for refloating. The next attempt would happen Saturday morning, said Mike Davies, acting area manager at the Department of Conservation's Kaitaia office. Far North Whale Rescue, which has a team of trained volunteers, is working with the department to achieve this. Currently, New Zealand's Far North region is experiencing heavy rain and wind, both a help and a hindrance to the rescue efforts, the Department of Conservation said. It means the whales are not at risk of drying out, but it creates difficult conditions for rescuers. Adult pilot whales can measure up to 20 feet long and weigh up to 3 tons. Due to their social nature, they are often involved in mass strandings, according to the American Cetacean Society. The ACS is a non-profit group based in California that works to protect whales, dolphins and porpoises, according to its website. added by: EthicalVegan

i went in to a local bbq resturant to pick up some great eats for when i got home as a birthday treat to myself, and noticed a sign i have probably seen a zillion times in that resturant.it is the tupe of resturant that has all sorts of reasonably funny signs posted through out like: “if you have a reservation your in the wrong place” or my favorite “this sign serves no purpose other than to take up space and waste the time of you the reader” while i was waiting for my dinner, i read a plaque that said: “i dunn been left by my man he dunn runned off wid my best fren i sho duz miss her” wich alone is a little sketchy to me, but who says it aint a slap at apalachian hillbillies too right.but i cant shake this feeling, cuz the plaque was shaped and painted like a slice of watermelon. did the turn of the century black stereotype some how stop being racist? did watermelom get taken off the table like horns with jews? the resturant was rib city by the way. just wondering if im missing something that makes this not racist. added by: freecrack

Fight Victim Asks Court to Order Attacker Paralyzed by Damage to Spinal Cord Under Eye-for-an-Eye Islamic Law (AP) A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals in the country whether they could damage a man's spinal cord as punishment after he was convicted of attacking another man with a cleaver and paralyzing him, the brother of the victim said Thursday. Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, 22, was left paralyzed and subsequently lost a foot after a fight more than two years ago. He asked a judge in northwestern Tabuk province to impose an equivalent punishment on his attacker under Islamic law, his brother Khaled al-Mutairi told The Associated Press by telephone from there. He said one of the hospitals, located in Tabuk, responded that it is possible to damage the spinal cord, but it added that the operation would have to be done at another more specialized facility. Saudi newspapers reported that a second hospital in the capital Riyadh declined, saying it could not inflict such harm. Administrative offices of two of the hospitals and the court in Tabuk were closed for the Saudi weekend beginning Thursday and could not be reached for comment. CBSNews.com Asks: Does America Hate Islam? A copy of the medical report from the King Khaled Hospital in Tabuk province obtained by the AP said the same injury al-Mutairi suffers from can be inflicted on his attacker using a nerve stimulant, and inducing the same injuries in the same locations. The report was dated six months ago. Saudi Arabia enforces strict Islamic law and occasionally doles out punishments based on the ancient legal code of an eye-for-an-eye. However, King Abdullah has been trying to clamp down on extremist ideology, including unauthorized clerics issuing odd religious decrees. Islam…. that religion of peace added by: 2helenahandbasket

Look at various aspects of American life and asks a simple question: Who is in control? The individual or the government? Where liberals have already had their way, government is in control. Where liberals are still moving to advance their agenda, their success would mean an increase in government intrusion into the lives of individuals. As they attempt to move the country on a trajectory toward greater government control of our lives, liberals are also pushing the country away from two great constants consistently advocated by the Founding Fathers: the principles of limited government chartered in the Constitution and the natural moral law enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. The greatest fiscal danger the nation faces as a result of the liberal agenda is the coming crisis of the welfare state. According to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation's analysis of Treasury Department figures, the federal government now faces $61.9 trillion in unfunded liabilities. That astounding number is comprised of the federal debt plus the cost of entitlements — such as Medicare and Social Security benefits — promised to people now alive that is not covered by the revenue the current tax structure is expected to yield. This $61.9 trillion in unfunded liabilities, by the way, equals $200,000 for every man, woman and child in the United States — not counting embryos. Where is the government going to find that kind of cash? The Control Freaks know where to look for it: Wherever you put your money. added by: ahiguy

(June 5) — Women in Saudi Arabia should give their breast milk to male colleagues and acquaintances in order to avoid breaking strict Islamic law forbidding mixing between the sexes, two powerful Saudi clerics have said. They are at odds, however, over precisely how the milk should be conveyed. A fatwa issued recently about adult breast-feeding to establish “maternal relations” and preclude the possibility of sexual contact has resulted in a week's worth of newspaper headlines in Saudi Arabia. Some have found the debate so bizarre that they're calling for stricter regulations about how and when fatwas should be issued. Sheikh Al Obeikan, an adviser to the royal court and consultant to the Ministry of Justice, set off a firestorm of controversy recently when he said on TV that women who come into regular contact with men who aren't related to them ought to give them their breast milk so they will be considered relatives. “The man should take the milk, but not directly from the breast of the woman,” Al Obeikan said, according to Gulf News. “He should drink it and then becomes a relative of the family, a fact that allows him to come in contact with the women without breaking Islam's rules about mixing.” This is so screwed up I'm speechless. added by: 2helenahandbasket

The thing that bothered me was that the links were redirected from a 3rd party marketing site. So now you have users who receive an email from their bank that has links in it that go to a different site than the link shows. Sounds an awful lot like what the phishers do… https://www.infosecisland.com/blogview/6753-Are-We-Really-Still-Doing-This-in-20… added by: Paisano1
