U.S. Begins Criminal Investigation into BP/Transocean/Halliburton Oil Spill

PART ONE… http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/01/gulf.oil.spill/index.html?hpt=T1&iref=BN1 U.S. begins criminal investigation into oil spill By the CNN Wire Staff June 1, 2010 4:24 p.m. EDT (CNN) — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that the Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into the massive oil spill spreading through the Gulf of Mexico. Holder said the investigation would be comprehensive and aggressive. He promised that the federal officials will prosecute anyone who broke the law. Holder, who made the announcement during a visit to the Gulf, called early signs of the spill heartbreaking and tragic. The attorney general was in the Gulf to survey the BP oil spill and meet with state attorneys general and federal prosecutors from Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, according to the Justice Department. In May, a group of senators — including Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California — sent Holder a letter expressing concerns “about the truthfulness and accuracy of statements submitted by BP to the government in its initial exploration plan for the site,” and asking Holder to investigate possible criminal and civil wrongdoing. In a reply to that letter last week, a Justice Department official did not say whether a criminal investigation had begun. “The Department of Justice will take all necessary and appropriate steps to ensure that those responsible for this tragic series of events are held fully accountable,” Assistant Attorney General Ronald Welch wrote. Holder said in May that the Justice Department would “ensure that BP is held liable.” BP began its latest attempt to curtail the flow of oil from an underwater well in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, using robot submarines to cut into a damaged pipe a mile down. The operation carries the risk that the flow of crude from the ruptured well, already the largest oil spill in U.S. history, will increase. But if successful, the company says it will be able to catch most of that oil with a cap it plans to place over the severed lower marine riser pipe. “Even with an increased flow rate, this cap will be able to handle this,” BP Managing Director Bob Dudley told CNN's “American Morning.” While the engineering has never been attempted at a depth of 5,000 feet, Dudley said Tuesday the latest attempt is “more straightforward” than previous, unsuccessful efforts. A mechanical claw began squeezing the heavy riser pipe late Tuesday morning, the first step in a series of planned cuts. After that, a diamond-cut saw will be used to make a “clean cut,” preparing the way for the custom-made cap to be fitted over the package. Tar balls and puddles of oil from the oil spill reached the shores of Alabama's Dauphin Island on Tuesday, residents and researchers involved in cleanup efforts reported. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said authorities were investigating reports that the outer sheen of oil was reaching coastal waters off Mississippi and Alabama earlier Tuesday, but those reports had not been confirmed when he spoke to reporters in New Orleans, Louisiana. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration had warned earlier this week that the spreading slick was heading toward the Alabama and Mississippi coasts. Tar balls associated with the Gulf spill had hit Dauphin Island, about 35 miles south of Mobile, in early May. Oil has been gushing from the undersea well since April 20 when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and later sank. Government estimates are that up to 19,000 barrels (798,000 gallons) of oil a day are flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Dudley said that could increase by up to 20 percent — nearly 160,000 gallons — when the pipe is cut, but he said the company has learned lessons from its earlier attempts that it is applying to the new process. Warm water and methanol will be pumped into the cap to limit the growth of gas hydrate crystals that thwarted an earlier attempt to cap the spill, he said. And a second line is planned to draw more oil off the well's blowout preventer, a critical piece of safety equipment that has so far failed to shut down the well, using equipment involved in last week's failed “top kill” operation. BP's handling of the spill and its statements regarding the status of operations have been sharply criticized by some in recent weeks. The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it would no longer hold joint news briefings with the company and that Allen, its point man on the spill, will now become the face of the government's response effort. Allen told reporters in New Orleans, Louisiana, that his job is to speak “very frankly with the American public.” “I think we need to be communicating with the American people through my voice as the national incident commander,” he said. Rear Adm. Mary Landry, who has been the Coast Guard's on-scene coordinator for five weeks, will be returning to her duties as chief of the service's New Orleans district office. Coast Guard Commandant Robert Papp said the plan always has been for Landry to resume that role in preparation for the Atlantic hurricane season, which began Tuesday. Allen praised Landry's work leading “an anomalous and unprecedented response” to the spill, but said Landry now needs to focus “on the larger array of threats” to her district, which includes the U.S. Southeast and Midwest. Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ Premieres Online

Kanye West-produced second single from Thank Me Later features Drake in full crooner mode. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Skip Bolen/ WireImage Drake’s long-awaited collaboration with Kanye West finally hit the Internet early Thursday morning (April 29). The pulsating “Find Your Love” was released on the Toronto MC’s Web site (though it has since been taken down due to bandwidth issues). The track was produced by West and features Drake in full crooner mode as he sings about saving his relationship. “I’m more than just an option,” he sings over sparse drums and piano licks. “Refuse to be forgotten/ I took a chance with my heart/ And I feel it taking over / I better find your loving/ I better find your heart.” “Find Your Love” is Drake’s second official single from his debut album Thank Me Later, due June 15. Lead selection “Over” came out in March ; “Shut It Down,” featuring The-Dream , leaked soon after; and he’s been performing another song, “Fireworks,” on his Away From Home Tour. The rapper was in Jamaica recently to film the video for “Find Your Love.” The track is Drake’s third collaboration with West , who direct the “Best I Ever Had” video and joined Drake, Lil Wayne and Eminem on “Forever.” Last year Drake told MTV News that the 808s & Heartbreak superstar was “the most influential person on his sound.” “Before I ever got the chance to meet him, Kanye West shaped a lot of what I do, as far as music goes,” Drake said. “We always, always, always took the time to listen to Kanye’s music and appreciate it beyond. We searched the samples and find out where his inspiration came from, because he has one of the best ears in music, period. He knows how to recognize great music that’s not his. He knows how to utilize great sounds and great music. So before I met him, I had the utmost respect for Kanye West. I’d even go as far as to say he’s the most influential person, as far as a musician, that I’d ever had in my life.” What do you think of Drake’s new song? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Shania Twain Gives The Boys A Boost

Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox struggle on country week. By Jim Cantiello The “American Idol” top 6 with Shania Twain Photo: FOX This week, the top six had to sing Shania Twain songs, but the contestants were completely upstaged by Shania herself, who displayed a perfect blend of characteristics from all the “Idol” judges. She had Simon’s sharp insight, Paula’s sweetness, Kara’s songwriting chops and Randy’s passion for peculiar cardigans. Plus, it was so nice of Shania to bring along the woman who takes care of her horses. (Seriously, who was that expressive lady sitting next to Shania all night? She should sit next to every guest mentor from now on.) Ironically, when it came time to sing the Shania Twain songbook, the guys fared better than the two remaining women. Casey James got serious (and seriously good) with “Don’t!,” Aaron Kelly turned a song about making love into a tender tribute to his mama, and Lee Dewyze sang “You’re Still the One” softly UNTIL HE SHOUTED THE CHORUS. (Nothing says “I love you” like an aching eardrum.) Meanwhile, Michael Lynche’s “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” garnered raves from the judges and tears from Shania. (And with the way the exchange rate is going now, Canadian tears are worth about the same as American tears. So good job, Big Mike!) Unfortunately, the remaining ladies struggled with the country sound. Siobhan Magnus sang/shrieked “Any Man of Mine” while high-fiving audience members, and Crystal Bowersox hid behind a bluegrass band … except when it came time to air her dirty laundry out on live television. You see, her custom T-shirt-wearing, no-good boyfriend is dragging his feet when the word “marriage” comes up. (Cue “Single Ladies!”) Bummer that the backstory was far more engaging (no pun intended) than her throwaway performance. (The song had something to do with cupid. And being stupid.) The lesson is that Crystal can’t do everything, like making bluegrass cool and receiving criticism gracefully. On a “jam-packed” results show, Rascal Flatts performed their new single “All Our Songs Sound the Same (So Why Bother With a Title?).” Carrie Underwood pimped out her buddies Sons of Sylvia (formerly the Clark Brothers, formerly the Great American Band, formerly Hey Record Label Execs, You Can Change the Name of the Group All You Want But America Still Won’t Give a Crap). Then 19 Entertainment continued their frustrating habit of taking a perfectly good solo song and forcing it to be a duet for no reason whatsoever by making Shakira perform “Gypsy” with Gary LeVox. (To quote the Mighty Bowersox, “Bigger isn’t always better.”) Highlighting the fact that “Gypsy: The Duet” was pointless, Lady Antebellum showed up to sing an actual duet, their irresistible hit “Need You Now.” Four musical performances, an extended promo for “Shrek Forever After” and a vampire-themed Ford commercial later, the bottom three were revealed. Big Mike sat first, leaving Siobhan and Casey on the chopping block. Ultimately the Glassblower joined the elite club of People Who Had the Pimp Spot and Were Sent Home Anyway (chairwoman: Lilly Scott). Her farewell was pretty shocking and emotional, but let’s look at the bright side: At least her elimination caused a cameraman to run up to Casey James’ mother’s face, giving us a sassy reaction shot that was more entertaining than 99 percent of this season of “Idol.” If only we could vote for Mama Casey. Next week the top five will do Sinatra songs with the king of Sinatra impressions, Harry Connick, Jr. I wonder if he’ll bring his gun to rehearsals. Matt Kemp Shows Rihanna the Birthday Love

Matt Kemp is projected as the sixth-best player in fantasy baseball headed into the 2010 MLB season. If hitting home runs with celebrities was a statistic, though? He’d still be behind Alex Rodriguez. But that #2 spot would be within reach after the awesome 22nd birthday party he threw for Rihanna in Phoenix this weekend! Rihanna was “shocked” by the baseball star’s grand gestures, apparently expecting a small get-together with a few friends, but getting a whole lot more than that. Kemp had been planning the event for a month to make sure Rihanna’s birthday was special, according to an insider, and boy did he come through in the clutch. Flowers, cupcakes, tiki torches in the pool, engraved bottles of Ace of Spades and Johnny Walker Blue, and a personal Jamaican chef? A kick-ass time was had. Sounds like Matt Kemp’s birthday bash for Rihanna was a smash hit. Around 40 people showed up, including friends of both the singer and Matt Kemp, who topped off the night with a cake decorated with Rihanna’s many tattoos. “It was so sweet and she was really surprised,” the source said. “She looked just beautiful.” Especially in the custom diamond necklace her beau bought for her! This guy’s really going the extra mile. While she has been coy about dating Matt Kemp so far, they’re leaving little doubt about a major love connection going on. Only 25 years old and in his prime, Matt Kemp would be a keeper in any fantasy league. Looks like Rihanna might rate him that way in the game of love, as well.

A Guided Tour of John Edwards and Rielle Hunter’s Future Love Den

The National Enquirer says John Edwards proposed to Rielle Hunter and is buying a $3.5M beach house. Now that we’ve found the real estate listing, a guide to the custom mahogany cabinetry (that’s yuppie for “marital bliss”) that lies ahead. The Enquirer ‘s print edition included two photos from this listing with Bald Head Island Real Estate (which is, according to its website, is the only real estate firm serving the North Carolina beach community), which is the only Bald Head property currently listed for $3.5 million. Since John will likely support Elizabeth and Rielle’s lives for the rest of his life, moving in with the one of those women who doesn’t want him castrated (perhaps the only woman in America who still likes him) makes sense. When you lose this much for a woman, you have to at least try to make it work with her. My only question is whether our “Bald Head” jokes should focus on John’s hair or his gigundo penis . Onward to the tour! If you’d like to see these images on one page, click here . 15 Cape Fear (L#1025) Trail is a 4000-ft. ocean- and riverfront mansion boasting five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a whirlpool, an elevator, intercoms (fun for the kids!), central vacuum (fun for the maid!), and a wet bar. Community amenities include a boat dock, beach club, canoe pier, tennis courts, and a golf course. Bald Head Island’s PR team describes local “homesites”: Planners and designers have established a Bald Head Island aesthetic, reminiscent of a style called the “Architecture of the American Summer,” characterized by deep roof overhangs, wide porches and traditional cedar siding. Deep roof overhangs = better shadows in which to hide from paparazzi. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a patio, the master bedroom’s abundant natural light will make shooting daytime sex tapes a dream. Cannabis-themed rug sold separately. Here we see the Great Room and its vaulted “Cathedral Ceiling,” for when you’re ready to repent for living in sin. The “Gourmet Kitchen” includes mahogany custom cabinets, granite counters, a sub-zero refrigerator, wine cooler, double ovens, and maple hardwood floors. It’s like living inside the trunk of a huge redwood tree. The cheery dining room is large enough for whenever your first wife’s kids stop hating you. The master bathroom features ceramic tiles and a gleaming white whirlpool, which Frances Quinn will stain blue with Manic Panic when she reaches her inevitable teenage rebellion. Speaking of little Quinn, here are her picks for nursery. The multi-use space is bathed with the bright light of shame. Here’s the satellite view, revealing the lucky duck neighbor with the swimming pool and how far you have to walk to get to the ocean. At least they have a nice dock… This will probably get super hot in the sun, forcing John and Rielle to race down it screaming “ooh! aah! ouch!”, pumping their knees high so as to maximize the distance between their feet and the ground, as though they are Lipizanner horses. No matter how many times you burn your feet on the dock, you will never think to bring shoes. That’s just the way it is. Let us conclude with a clip from one of the Bald Head Island PR team’s video promos . (Which are very effective. I am completely sold on their “pre-fab Martha’s Vineyard of the South” aesthetic.) The island is personified as a female who “giggles when the ocean waves tickle her shoulder.” It would seem the future Mrs. John Edwards has found paradise at last.
