If Justin Bieber looked especially relaxed at last night’s American Music Awards – singing ” Under the Mistletoe ,” posing on the red carpet – there was a good reason for the artist’s positive mood: He reportedly took a DNA test Friday, as Bieber looks to officially clear his sperm and end talk that he’s the father of Mariah Yeater’s child. Justin Bieber doesn’t look too worried about anything other than making Selena Gomez happy, does he? A source tells TMZ that Justin took the test at a lab under “very controlled circumstances.” From here, assuming the results prove he is NOT the daddy, Bieber’s team says he will sue Yeater for defamation. Meanwhile, shortly after taking the test, Bieber rehearsed in Los Angeles for his AMA performance – and witnesses say he paid especially close attention to a certain member of the crowd throughout the evening: Selena Gomez. “At one point Justin even sang I Feel Good, a la James Brown! They were totally adorable,” an onlooker reports of Justin and Selena. “They were snuggling in between takes, and he was serenading her! They look as in love as ever.” AWWWW!
‘Every song Heavy D ever put out was something to uplift us,’ former labelmate tells MTV News about her fallen friend. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Vanessa Whitewolf Mary J. Blige Photo: MTV News Mary J. Bilge famously sang “Not Gon’ Cry” on her 1996 single, but when the topic of her fallen friend and former Uptown Records labelmate Heavy D came up, the emotion was just too much to hold back. ” Heavy D was so beloved because the impact he made on music was that we could have fun: We can do hip-hop without murdering and killing everybody,” a tearful MJB told MTV News on Tuesday in Beverly Hills. “And he just brought so much light.” Mary, like Heavy, hailed from the outskirts of New York City — him from Mount Vernon, her from Yonkers. It was 1987 when Heavy D & the Boyz released their first album, Living Large, on Uptown Records. Mary was signed years later, and in 1992, dropped her debut album, What’s the 411? — but her earliest memories of Heavy pre-date her days in the music industry. “I just remember being a child and him coming to King school, where they used to have all the performers come, and they came and did ‘The Overweight Lover,’ ” Mary recalled with tears in her eyes. “We always needed something to uplift us, and he brought us so much joy because we were always in a place where we didn’t have enough, we couldn’t get enough money, but the King school show was free, and every song Heavy D ever put out was something to uplift us.” The exact cause of Heavy D’s death November 8 is still unclear, as initial autopsy results came up inconclusive. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills after a 911 call was placed from his home. Heavy had difficulty breathing and was pronounced dead after he reached the hospital. There will be a public viewing for the fallen rapper Thursday (November 17) at Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York, and a private funeral service for family and close friends Friday. BET is planning a special tribute to Heavy D during the Soul Train Awards . Rappers Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Kurtis Blow, Naughty by Nature, Whodini and Stetsasonic’s Daddy-O are all expected to take part. Share your fondest memory of Heavy D in the comments. Astro and Rachel Crow also earn high marks, but Stacy Francis and Lakoda Rayne draw Simon Cowell’s ire. By Adam Graham Josh Krajcik performs on “The X Factor” Photo: FOX “The X Factor” took on rock music Wednesday, with decidedly rocky results. The debate of what really constitutes rock overshadowed the proceedings, with the increasingly catty judges sniping at one another over their song choices and whether they fit the evening’s theme. In the end, only one performer, Josh Krajcik, turned in what could truly be considered a rockin’ performance, plugging in and kicking out the jams with the Foo Fighters’ “Pretender.” Krajcik was the evening’s big winner — inspiring mentor Nicole Scherzinger to head-bang her way through his performance — along with teen rapper Astro, who is quickly becoming a favorite in the competition. Astro’s original song, a dedication to hip-hop rapped to Puff Daddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You,” caused L.A. Reid to gush that he not only has what it takes to win the competition, but also to become a “major international star,” while Simon Cowell told him he has more maturity and intelligence than the older contestants he’s up against. Astro’s consistency, meanwhile, irked Paula Abdul. “Can you just suck for once?” she pleaded. “I don’t think you can!” Here’s how the remainder of the contestants fared: The Boys Chris Rene, sporting one of Jay-Z’s controversial Occupy All Streets T-shirts , did Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry,” which Cowell argued wasn’t nearly rockin’ enough. “Loved the performance. Would have been great if the theme was reggae,” Cowell quipped. Marcus Canty’s take on Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” earned high marks from everyone but Cowell, who said it felt like he was pretending to be someone he’s not. L.A. Reid shot back with a simple, “You rocked!” The Girls Coming off a strong performance last week, Rachel Crow took on the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” which more than satisfied the judges. “The question is, can you sell records? Can you sell tickets? And the answer is yes,” Reid beamed. Melanie Amaro’s piano-and-vocals version of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” was dismissed as “so not rock” by Reid, and Scherzinger questioned why she wasn’t moved to tears by the song (she explained that, normally, she is a weeping mess by the song’s close). Cowell, however, boasted that the performance reminded him of Adele and Alicia Keys — performers who are not the least bit rock, mind you, but who happen to sell a lot of records. Fourteen-year-old Drew, meanwhile, took on U2’s “With or Without You” — which was similar to her version of Coldplay’s “Fix You” last week — and Reid, Scherzinger and Abdul all stressed they’d like to hear her do something outside her comfort zone. But Cowell dismissed their comments and praised her, saying he’s confident she’ll be in the competition “until the end.” The Over 30’s LeRoy Bell’s straightforward reading of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” was smacked down by the judges. “You’re good, man, but I need more. This is the big time,” Reid scolded him. Stacy Francis dedicated her performance of Meat Loaf’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” to her “Franatics,” but Cowell trashed her performance with his most stinging critique of the season to date. “It was the sort of thing I would expect someone to sing at the Hilton hotel with people turning their backs eating peanuts,” he said. (It’s safe to say he is not a Franatic.) The Group Lakoda Rayne, Paula Abdul’s sole remaining group , got hammered for what Cowell called their “stupid” and “gimmicky” choreography, and he called the group’s performance of the Outfield’s “Your Love” mashed up with Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” “a complete mess.” When Reid called Cowell’s critique harsh, Cowell barked, “Watch your back” at Reid. Me-ow, you two! One finalist is due to be sent home on Thursday’s (November 17) show, which is also set to feature a live performance by Rihanna. What did you think of rock night on “The X Factor”? Minaj, the new face of Versace for H&M, and the fashion icon chat with MTV News about brand’s enduring appeal. By Rebecca Thomas Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Back in the late ’90s, Versace was to the Bad Boy camp what Supreme is to Odd Future — nothing less than a uniform. Of course, whereas Tyler and crew can set up shop at the Los Angeles outpost, the ultra high-end Italian label hadn’t exactly been marketing to new-money rappers from the ‘hood. But that didn’t ruin budding mogul Sean Combs ‘ (then Puff Daddy) appetite for the couture line. Espousing his “ghetto fabulous” ethos, Combs outfitted his roster in the colorful prints with those gold Madusa details, and an enduring hip-hop love affair was born. When MTV News heard that Nicki Minaj had teamed up with the house of Versace as they rolled out a collection for fast-fashion retailer H&M, we couldn’t wait to ask the Harajuku Barbie what the brand meant to her. We caught up with her on the red carpet of the launch last week, and it turned out one of Bedford-Stuyvesant’s finest was on her mind. “We can remember Biggie Smalls talking about Versace,” Nicki, dressed in a multicolor beaded pantsuit topped with a palm-frond accented wig, told us about the late Bad Boy MC. “It’s something that as a little girl, growing up in hip-hop, you never really think you’ll get a chance to — I never thought I’d get to model for Versace, you know what I mean?” Although Versace shades quickly became a status accessory among rising rappers in rap’s glossy, shiny-suit era, it was Diddy and Big who truly cemented the brand’s place, name-checking it in songs like the “One More Chance” remix and J.U.N.I.O.R. Mafia’s “Get Money” ( My Mo-schi-no ho, my Versace hottie, Big rapped on the Lil’ Kim collabo). Indeed, Biggie and Puff donned matching silk Versace shirts for ’97’s “Hypnotize” video, which would become the final visual offering from the late rapper. “It’s just a big deal because they’ve been clothing the hip-hop generation for a very, very long time,” Nicki added about the line founded in the late 1970s by Gianni Versace. “Whether we could afford it or not, we wanted it.” Fashion icon (and sister of the late Gianni) Donatella Versace told MTV News she was flattered by how right-now rappers and pop stars like Lady Gaga , Big Sean and “fantastic” Nicki continue to embrace the brand. And the platinum-blond designer had a theory about why. “I feel all the [artists like Gaga and Sean] … are people who like to dare and to take risks, and [it’s the same] in fashion so that combination works,” Versace said. Earlier this summer, Gaga announced to a U.K. style site that she planned to feed her fashionable fixation by wearing “only Versace for, like, the next two months.” Around the same time, G.O.O.D. Music breakout star Big Sean ordered up vintage Versace threads and shades on the Hype Williams set of his sexy “Marvin & Chardonnay” vid. “If we gonna have Versaces, it’s gonna be the OG Medusa-head Versace,” he insisted. Donatella could clearly sense nostalgia was in bloom. “It’s a moment that I felt was the right moment,” she said of launching the mass collection. “It’s a lot of requests for Versace iconic pieces like printed shirts, and everybody is doing homage to Versace so I decided to give them the real thing to H&M, to the kids!” she smiled. Is Kate Middleton pregnant? The Duchess has ignited speculation that she is expecting once again after a visit to a UNICEF distribution center in Copenhagen, Denmark. With Prince William at her side, Kate avoided a certain food product as they sampled items from UNICEF aid packages sent to famine-stricken East African countries. While members of the Danish royal family and William tasted peanut paste, Kate politely refused and reportedly gave her husband of six months a knowing look. Doctors have frequently recommended pregnant women avoid peanuts and byproducts while expecting in order to help prevent allergies in their babies-to-be. What’s more, The Palace itself even “went out of their way to stress that she has no nut allergy whatsoever,” an editor for Britain’s The Sun told ABC News. Whenever William and Kate Middleton welcome their first child, he or she will inherit the throne. The rules were changed to allow a first-born daughter to rule. If they have a girl first, that is. The UK monarchy recently agreed that a first-born girl should be able to ascend the throne even if she has younger brothers. Still, pregnancy speculation or not, Middleton is certainly not displaying any bump just yet; Britain’s Best Dressed was slim and stylish as ever in Denmark. Congratulations … maybe!
With her turn in Horrible Bosses earlier this year, Jennifer Aniston likely made a lot of people reevaluate the American sweetheart/mediocre romantic comedy persona she’s cultivated (or been burdened by) over the years. Wanderlust further helps her break that mold in hilarious fashion. Jen and Paul Rudd play a couple who exit the city and take refuge in the country within a community that is … shall we say, socially liberal. Watch the trailer: Wanderlust Trailer Their new community/commune home is filled with people who embrace a free-spirited mentality when it comes to jobs, relationships, clothes … you name it. Produced by Judd Apatow, Wanderlust is also notable as the film where Jen met Justin Theroux, who co-stars in the film and is now her live-in boyfriend. It comes out February 24.
