Simon Cowell’s ‘X Factor’ Embroiled In Auto-Tune Controversy

Spokesperson for British reality show admits that contestants’ vocals were enhanced. By Gil Kaufman Photo: ITV There were plenty of times during the lackluster recent season of “American Idol” when fans probably wished producers would allow the weaker finalists to Auto-Tune their shaky vocals. Maybe they should be watching England’s “X Factor” instead. A major scandal is brewing over revelations that the show enhanced the vocals of some contestants during Saturday’s season premiere, with some of the very obviously tweaked vocals so clumsily edited they could have been included on a T-Pain single. According to BBC News , a spokesperson for the show — created and produced by former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell (who is bringing it to the U.S. in 2011) — admitted that post-production work was done on some of the singers’ vocals because of interference caused by the number of microphones used during filming. One of the most obvious enhancements was made to contestant Gamu Nhengu’s take on Katrina and the Waves’ iconic “Walking on Sunshine,” during which her vocals are very clearly massaged to keep her in key. The post-production face-lift was almost laughable during singer Shirlena Johnson’s cover of Duffy’s “Mercy,” which had her struggling to stay in tune even amid heavy-handed studio trickery. “The judges make their decisions at the auditions stage based on what they hear on the day, live in the arena,” the spokesman explained about the enhancements added after Saturday’s first program, which was viewed by more than 11 million people. “The footage and sound is then edited and dubbed into a finished program, to deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers. When it gets to the live shows, it will be all live.” The revelation has resulted in a raft of complaints by angry fans, who felt cheated after Cowell told Nhengu that she was “really talented,” which helped her advance to the next round. One contestant who reached the live finals last year slammed the show for trying to deceive fans. Daniel Evans wrote on his Twitter page, “I am big campaigner against auto-tune in the music industry, it’s all over the charts but to hear it on a so-called live show is just plain sad. … It’s like an epidemic, and I won’t be watching again. Sad times for real music fans.” According to England’s Daily Mirror, the vocal trickery expands well beyond the initial audition rounds, with one former unnamed production staffer saying, “It was an open secret on the show that Auto-Tune was used to both make contestants slightly more on-key or off-key. On some occasions it was used to such extremes that while the contestant may have sounded like they were hitting the right note, the backing band had gone right out of tune. … It has been used for a long time on the show both for the auditions and the live shows.” The paper also reported that Cowell ordered an immediate ban on Auto-Tune being used in future shows, while insisting to friends that he was shocked by the claims and plans to launch an investigation.

Prince Insists ‘The Internet’s Completely Over’

‘I don’t see why I should give my music to iTunes or anyone else,’ singer says of digital sales. By Mawuse Ziegbe Prince Photo: Jens Dige/Scanpix/AFP Photo Don’t expect pop legend Prince to join the army of celebs oversharing on Twitter or ranting on Facebook. The rock god has proclaimed the Internet a thing of the past, calling the World Wide Web “outdated.” “The Internet’s completely over,” Prince told the U.K.’s Daily Mirror . It appears the pop god wants fans to head to an old-fashion record store to pick up his upcoming album 20Ten, as the icon is not OK with selling his latest music through an e-retailer. “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.” The Purple One didn’t stop his critique at e-commerce and chalked up his lack of interest in the Internet as a whole to the medium’s lack of coolness. “The Internet’s like MTV,” said Prince, comparing the Web to the media company. “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated.” It’s probably safe to assume that Prince is neither a Mac nor a PC — the “Purple Rain” singer also lambasted the proliferation of technical devices and said, “All these computers and digital gadgets are no good.” The music luminary, who is releasing 20Ten for free in the U.K. with copies of the Mirror on Saturday (July 10), insisted that users would be better off without their digital devices. “They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.” In addition to slamming all things digital, Prince also directed some criticism inward. The influential singer and instrumentalist revealed that since he feels he’s been advancing his craft over the years, he’s embarrassed by his earlier recordings. “Someone told me they saw me at my peak, but how do they know when my peak is? I think I’m improving all the time,” he said. “When I listen to my old records I’m ashamed of how I played then.” The perennially ageless singer also insisted that a lifetime of rocking out has preserved his youthful appearance. “Playing electric guitar your whole life does something to you. I’m convinced all that electricity racing through my body made me keep my hair,” he offered. While the pop icon may be over his earlier music, he is still regarded by many as a living legend. Prince was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 BET Awards , as stars like Patti LaBelle and Alicia Keys took to the stage to celebrate the artist’s massively successful and hugely influential career. Katy Stops Russell From Rock ‘N’ Roll Wedding

Singer Katy Perry has reportedly stopped her fiance Russell Brand from turning their wedding theme to rock ‘n’ roll. Perry, 24, got engaged over the New Year when Brand, 35, proposed to her in India. Brand was reportedly keen on also getting married in India, but Perry has said she wants to get wed near their LA home. Brand then said they should marry in the studios of the Sunset Marquis hotel but she wasn’t keen according to source speaking to the Daily Mirror . “Russell has been visiting the hotel for years and it is steeped in rock ‘n’ roll history. It’s in the middle of West Hollywood, but it has beautiful gardens and you feel like you are in some kind of tranquil paradise. Katy was keen, but when they suggested they could have their blessing in one of the recording studios, she put her foot down.” The singer’s ‘ultra-religious’ parents would reportedly be upset if their daughter didn’t marry in a church.

Apple Only Wants 16+ Year-Olds Working Its Dodgy Sweatshops [Evil Corporations In Action]

Apple products are made in factories that regularly employ young teenagers, constantly work people more than 60 hours per week, and falsify records to cover up their misdeeds. That’s according to the shameless gossiping muckrakers at… uh, Apple Inc. The company’s brightly-named ” Supplier Responsibility 2010 Progress Report ” ( PDF ) contains some dark information about the contractors who actually make Apple products, mostly overseas and mostly in China. Like workers who were really 15 when they were supposed to be at least…. uh, 16, the ideal age for anyone in a factory: As Fake Steve Jobs put it, ” Tiny fingers, sharp eyes .” Also, it sounds like pretty much everyone is working insanely long hours, in excess of 60 hours per week: According to Apple’s report, workers often pay for the privilege of working these hours via recruiting fees, which in eight facilities were so extortionate as to be in violation of local law. At 24 factories, workers weren’t even making the local (shitty) minimum wage. At 48, they were deprived of proper overtime. At 57, they were screwed on sick leave and other benefits. And so on and so on. Then there was the lying: Three facilities were caught falsifying records for Apple on underaged labor and/or working hours, and one even got fired from doing business with Apple, for getting busted lying two years in a row. Apple has standards, you know. The Apple fanboys, naturally, are already defending the company from the negative press that’s come out of this report, saying other companies don’t even bother to investigate suppliers as Apple does. AppleInsider quoted CEO Steve Jobs at the Apple shareholder meeting: Jobs… passionately argu[ed] that the media and environmental groups have ignored the real issues to focus mainly on what promises companies were making, even though many companies do not actually meet their promised goals. Apple, Jobs said, was focused on actually achieving results. Jobs’s argument about achieving results rings hollow given that Apple got serious about this issue nearly four years ago. Apple launched audits — and promised progress — in response to a 2006 report in the Daily Mirror about low pay and marathon work hours at iPod factories in China. Yet the past year has seen the violations cited in Apple’s report, a worker at one of Apple’s largest contractors, Foxconn, committing suicide after an aggressive interrogation by Foxconn security, and the reported roughing up at least two journalists investigating Apple product factories. In response, from Apple, we have a report that names no names, specifies very few penalties and generally offers to fix things with toothless or meaningless correctives like “detailed standards,” “appropriate management systems,” “third-party consultants,” self inspections, “management systems… to drive compliance,” “management systems to ensure accurate payment,” and the always reliable “clear policies and procedures.” If this is “achieving results,” things must have been pretty terrible a few years ago. Maybe, just maybe, in a couple of years, the 16-year-old child laborers in Apple product factories might pay legitimate fees to work 60-hour weeks for no less than the crappy local minimum wage. Progress! (Pic: A customer at the first Apple Store in China, 2008, Getty Images.)
