Drake’s Next Act, Lil Wayne’s Return, More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for post-prison music from T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, along with more from Young Money/ Cash Money. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Skip Bolen/ Getty Images Arrests and court cases dominated the hip-hop headlines last year, but with Lil Wayne free and a host of new stars ready to take the next step, 2011 should bring some better days . Drake is expected to drop Take Care, the follow-up to his debut, and the entire Young Money/ Cash Money crew has their sights set on world domination (can we also get a world tour?). There are still some MCs behind bars, but T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy will be out soon, and hopefully acts like Young Jeezy, 50 Cent and Nas can rebound from rap purgatory with projects worthy of their talents. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part two in our preview of stories to follow in the new year. Drake’s Second Date The breakout star of 2010 is working on the follow-up to his debut, Thank Me Later : the gentlemanly titled Take Care. He’s promised bigger records for his sophomore set, and so far, he’s been in the studio with Justin Timberlake and the Neptunes, among others, to prove his point. His much-hyped R&B mixtape, It’s Never Enough, is on hold at the moment as Drizzy takes his act international during his current jaunt across the Atlantic with J. Cole. When the pair of projects arrive, however, expect Drake-mania to ratchet up all over again. Freed MCs The past 12 months weren’t kind to T.I. After being released from a halfway house in March, the beloved Atlanta MC returned to work, but the reception to his solo material was tepid. He scored knockouts with his guest verses on Drake’s and Rick Ross’ albums, but by the time he released his retooled (and rushed) No Mercy LP, he was back behind bars after a parole violation . We’re hoping Tip rebounds like Blake Griffin when he completes his 11-month prison term. Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, meanwhile, is scheduled to finish his jail sentence this year as well. The New York MC was embarking on a rejuvenated solo career when he was arrested on gun-possession charges. We’ll be saluting him when he touches back down. Rebounding Rappers Without a doubt, Young Jeezy is one of the best out, but the trap star has had a harder time than usual getting his latest album, the long-delayed Thug Motivation 103, out the gate due to the slow response to his single choices. Likewise, a motivated 50 Cent, who has been busy milking millions of dollars out of Hollywood lately, is set to come back with a new album, the follow-up to Before I Self-Destruct, the superstar’s first LP to fall short of the platinum-selling mark. Fellow Queens native Nas may have expanded his fanbase with his collaborative effort with Damian Marley, but fans are looking for the Distant Relatives MC to return to Nasty Nas form on his forthcoming effort, due later this year. Weezy’s World There’s Lil Wayne’s next album, and then there’s everybody else’s projects. Apologies to Jay-Z and Kanye West, but even their royal collaborative LP, Watch the Thrown, has to bow down to Tha Carter IV as the most-anticipated hip-hop album of the year. The frenetic MC was behind bars for 10 months in 2010 and has kept a low profile since he was released in November. Weezy’s rollicking “6 Foot 7 Foot” is a sign of things to come. Excuse his charisma, but we’re rocking with the Cash Money King in 2011. Young Money/ Cash Money Takeover Nicki Minaj is still in full promotional mode for Pink Friday, with videos on the way for her Drake-assisted “Moment 4 Life” and “Fly” featuring Rihanna. Then there’s Drizzy’s pair of projects, his R&B mixtape and Take Care. Lil Wayne is back (!!!) and putting the final touches on Tha Carter IV. The next generation of YM heavy hitters are on deck: Tyga, Lil Twist and Cory Gunz are all expected to drop their debuts albums. New Cash Money acquisition DJ Khaled is also readying his first project for the house that Baby and Slim built. Then there’s the rumored YMCMB tour that would place the revamped crew alongside Bad Boy, Death Row, No Limit, Rough Ryders and Roc-A-Fella as one of the premiere collectives in hip-hop history. Mixtape Daily will be back on the daily grind beginning Tuesday, January 18, with our first Main Pick of the new year, Rick Ross’ Ashes to Ashes. Michelle Williams Says Heath Ledger Comments ‘Did Cross A Line’

‘Blue Valentine’ star says ‘Nightline’ ‘edited the piece to sell the interview.’ By Jocelyn Vena Michelle Williams Photo: Getty Images Michelle Williams sat down with “Nightline” recently, and in the process of talking about her film “Blue Valentine,” she also opened up about the 2008 death of Heath Ledger, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Matilda. When Williams spoke to The Daily Beast about that interview, she revealed some regret about how those comments were presented. “Just recently I felt as if I did cross a line about all this,” she explains. “Yet if I’m going to do interviews and be in this world, I don’t want to seem as if I’m just taking a party line. I want to say something that is representative of who I am and what I’m thinking about and what matters to me in the same ways that I want to do that in my work because my work and my life do feed off each other. The two do go together.” The actress goes on to note that she feels some of the blame also falls on the show. “When it comes to interviews, it all becomes rather tricky because I don’t want to say something without resonance but then I don’t want to go too far. I just had an experience with ‘Nightline’ that got edited in such a way that seemed as if I did go too far. “It was a three-hour interview that was edited in such a way that was devastating to me,” she says. “They edited the piece to sell the interview, and it appeared as if I were breaking some kind of silence and sitting down with the express purpose to discuss something that is very private to me.” Williams admits that even though she wants to keep some things private, she often opens up naturally. “And I say, ‘OK, this subject is off-limits if it is going to be convoluted and re-contextualized.’ … But then I sit down with you and feel compelled to talk about it,” she describes. “So it is a struggle.” Williams says she has been trying to find a balance in the nearly three years since Ledger died , and it was especially hard in the time right after his passing. “How do I talk about this? I experienced a lot of loss after his death. I lost my city because of all the paparazzi descending upon us. I actually lost my journal during that time, oddly enough. I literally couldn’t hold on to anything,” she recalls. “I lost my sense of humor. I’m still sort of looking for that.” Related Photos Heath Ledger: 1979-2008

Ryan Phillippe to Reese Witherspoon: Congrats!

As recently as this spring, Ryan Phillippe said he was still sad over his divorce from Reese Witherspoon. Hide Ya Kids, Hide Ya Wife: Teenage Gangbanger To Be Tried As An Adult After Murking Mother and Child

Damn this sounds like the kind of story you would see in a LA gang flick. Since when did gangbanging in New York become cool!?!? The feds are prosecuting a teen gang member as an adult in the execution-style slayings of a young Long Island woman and her 2-year-old son, the Daily News has learned. A Salvadoran member of the notorious MS-13 gang, who was 17 years old at the time, lured a mother and her child to a Central Islip industrial park last February and, in the coldest of cold-blooded murders, they were shot in the head, the feds say. A judge gave prosecutors the unusual go-ahead to bring murder in aid of racketeering charges against the thug – similar to what they would slap a mobster with for carrying out a hit, court papers reveal. “It is hard to imagine a more compelling case for transfer to adult status,” Federal Judge Joseph Bianco wrote in his ruling. “The juvenile justice system, including the limited sentencing options…is simply ill-equipped and woefully insufficient under the circumstances of this case, to adequately address in the interest of justice these most grave charges.” WHY did this deranged son-of-a-b*tch execute these kids you ask? After she had a falling-out with the shooter, Argueta asked members of the L.A.-based 18th Street Gang, a rival to his MS-13 with tentacles across America, to beat him up. Both are Latino gangs. She gave her ex-beau’s address in Suffolk County to local members of the 18th St. Gang posse. The ex told the 17-year-old MS-13 member about the beef and they decided Argueta and her toddler, Diego, must die, the feds allege. Argueta was shot in the head and the chest; little Diego was shot twice in the head. Gangbanging is stupid enough as is, but killing women and children over a lover’s quarrel…we gotta do better people. Source
