iPhone 4 Press Conference: Apple Offers Free Cases As Antenna Fix

Current owners and anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 before September 30 can apply for cases online starting next week. By Russ Frushtick Apple iPhone 4 Photo: Apple After weeks of controversy surrounding the iPhone 4’s antenna issues, Apple has responded by offering free cases to current owners and anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 before September 30. Rumblings of technical issues with the iPhone 4 antenna began on launch day, when users and tech blogs were reporting that, when touching the iPhone’s antenna in the lower left part of the phone, service would drop out substantially. It was found that having a case, such as Apple’s rubberized Bumper, would prevent direct contact with the antenna and thereby fix the issue. The Bumper sells for $29.99. Earlier this week, Consumer Reports announced that it couldn’t recommend the iPhone 4 until Apple offered a free solution to the antenna problem. Apple held a press conference Friday (July 16) to discuss the problem. Steve Jobs, the co-founder and CEO of Apple, spoke to a small crowd of media, saying the antenna problems on the iPhone 4 have been blown out of proportion. Jobs mentioned that “less than one half of 1 percent” of those contacting AppleCare were experiencing problems with the iPhone 4 antenna and that the rate of dropped calls is equal to that of the iPhone 3GS. Jobs continued, saying that “[smart] phones aren’t perfect … every phone has weak spots,” and he proceeded to show videos of other smart phones experiencing the same drop in reception when held in a certain way. But Jobs was quick to note that Apple is still concerned about the small percentage of users who are experiencing problems with their phones. He announced that any current iPhone 4 owner, or anyone who purchases the phone before September 30, 2010, will be able to submit a request online for a free case. Because Apple won’t be able to manufacture enough Bumper cases for everyone, the site will allow users to select from a range of third-party cases as well. Those who receive a free case will then have 30 days to decide whether they want to keep the phone or take it back to the store for a full refund. Apple will begin taking requests for free cases starting late next week. For more on the iPhone 4, head on over to Multiplayer.MTV.com .

‘Inception’: The Reviews Are In!

A cabal of critics isn’t lulled by the blockbuster dreamscape, with one deriding it for having ‘no soul, no sex and almost no joy.’ By Eric Ditzian Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. It happened last winter with “Avatar” and it’s happening again with “Inception”: a hugely hyped, big-budget thrill-ride hits theaters, pretty much everyone loves it, yet there remain a few critics on the sideline defiantly shouting, “But it’s really not that good, people!” To those “Inception” haters, we might ask: Um, what exactly do you expect from a summer blockbuster? Because “Inception” is about as perfect as a summer blockbuster can be. Which is not to say it’s a perfect movie . No doubt, Christopher Nolan’s cinematic dreamscape has its fair share of flaws. But if you expect a ripping story line, whiz-bang special effects and the sense of being transported to another world, you will not be disappointed. In fact, you will be elated. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb, the brains behind a crew of thieves — including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and Tom Hardy — with a peculiar specialty: They possess a machine that allows them to enter another person’s dreams and steal a secret. Their quest in “Inception” is to implant a memory, which requires them to create dreams worlds within dream worlds — and not get lost forever on the bewildering shores of their own subconscious. Will you be a fanatic or hater of “Inception”? There’s only one way to find out: Get thyself to the multiplex. And before you do, check out what the critics have to say. The Hype “The accomplishments of ‘Inception’ are mainly technical, which is faint praise only if you insist on expecting something more from commercial entertainment. That audiences do — and should — expect more is partly, I suspect, what has inspired some of the feverish early notices hailing ‘Inception’ as a masterpiece, just as the desire for a certifiably great superhero movie led to the wild overrating of ‘The Dark Knight.’ In both cases Mr. Nolan’s virtuosity as a conjurer of brilliant scenes and stunning set pieces, along with his ability to invest grandeur and novelty into conventional themes, have fostered the illusion that he is some kind of visionary.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times The Dissenters “If you approach ‘Inception’ with lowered expectations it’s a pretty good time … For all the complexity, craftsmanship and color of ‘Inception,’ it’s yet another of [Nolan’s] ultra-serious schematic constructions with no soul, no sex and almost no joy, all about some tormented dude struggling with his ill-managed Freudian demons. That same guy sitting next to me cracked that Nolan needs to stop seeing a therapist; there’s not nearly enough sublimation in his movies.” — Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com The Complexities “Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay, lays out the rules of his world deftly. A ton of exposition is needed, yet it never feels like exposition. Things are explained plausibly, and in just enough detail for us to get it — the last thing Nolan wants to do is over-explain himself. The information is parceled out carefully, not all at once, but not in a way that’s maddening or cryptic, either. Again, I marvel at how many films with concepts far simpler than this one never make sense at all, or else only make sense because they repeat themselves clumsily.” — Eric Snider, Cinematical.com The Performances ” ‘Inception’ benefits immensely from a series of low-key and thoroughly credible performances. DiCaprio, in a kind of riff on his ‘Shutter Island’ performance, embodies both the steel and the putty of Cobb, a man who can do remarkable things and is at the same time deeply vulnerable. Gordon-Levitt, stylish and lean as a dagger, makes a fine and steady cohort, Page is utterly at home in the intellectual depths of her character, and Hardy has a seedy nobility that suggests a John le Carr

Flashback 2008: CNN’s Roberts Declares ‘Rev. Wright-Free Zone’ During Obama Interview

In the wake of Tuesday’s revelations concerning liberal media members trying to bury the Rev. Jeremiah Wright story in the spring of 2008, one has to wonder how many mainstream organizations played a hand. On May 5 of that year, at the beginning of an interview with Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama, CNN’s John Roberts said ( video available here courtesy Ed Driscoll, relevant section at 3:43): I want to just stipulate at the beginning of this interview, we are declaring a Reverend Wright-free zone today. So, no questions about Reverend Wright. Our viewers want us to move on, so this morning we’re going to move on. As NewsBusters noted at the time, this came eight days after CNN personalities David Gergen, Tony Harris, and Roland Martin had a discussion about why the media should stop talking about Wright (video follows with transcript and commentary): TONY HARRIS: I guess the point I would make, David, is that it seems to me that [presidential] race seems more and more — you look at the results in Pennsylvania — and it looks like more and more there are camps forming here, and that race, whether we speak of it or not, is seemingly finding its way more and more into this [presidential] race. And I was wondering if that was a moment being used — that window being used by Reverend Wright to make that point, which I thought was powerful, that different does not mean deficient. DAVID GERGEN: You know, those are important points to make — he’s not the right person to be making them on behalf of Barack Obama’s campaign. Every time he appears, he just gives legitimacy and a hunger by those who oppose Barack Obama to re-run those tapes, to keep him at the center of controversy, to let this overhang and define Barack Obama, when it has, you know — it has very, very little to do — it’s a very marginal piece of who Barack Obama is and what he stands for. And it takes attention away — we have huge, huge problems facing this country. The candidates are increasingly coming down on opposite sides. We’re having no discussion of that. Instead, we’re off on this sideshow, which is — and I think that, you know, this good preacher, I’m sure he’s a fine man, and if he had taken Bill Moyers on a walking tour of his parish, and shown people the good works that church was doing, you know, how it is helping the hungry, how it is looking after young kids, and the many other good things that church does — that would have been totally appropriate. But to be on this publicity blitz, when we have to listen to his varied views, you know, I think it’s time for him to get off the stage and frankly, for the media, I suggest, to move on. (CROSSTALK) TONY HARRIS: Go ahead, Roland. ROLAND MARTIN: You know, David, when he spoke at the National Press Club today, he actually did that. He talked about all these ministries the church is involved in. I mean, I thought his opening statement — he gave a theological, a sound opening statement. But again, the focus will not be on any of that. The focus will not be on the war, will not be on their HIV/AIDS ministry, will not be [on] any of that. It’s going to be his answer to the AIDS question, it’s going to be his answer towards — talking about Dick Cheney. That’s the problem with that. (CROSSTALK) GERGEN: If this man cares one wit about electing an African-American to the highest office in the land, he should get off the national stage. You know that. HARRIS: Point-blank. MARTIN: I know. I agree. I agree. It just — it did not help at all, and frankly, it’s going to invite more questions, and so now the question is, Reverend Wright — where does he go next? Does he continue? Does he keep talking, because absolutely, people are going to perceive… GERGEN: He should just go away, go back to the pulpit. MARTIN: Well, I tell my radio listeners that every day. HARRIS: One final question for both of you: what does Barack Obama do now in the face of this? (PAUSE) HARRIS: Wow. MARTIN: Well, I know Barack Obama does — I think what Senator Obama does — he keeps moving, he keeps focusing on his message. But also, he interates consistantly, I am running for president. I speak for myself. I am the one advocating these policies. And I am the one who is going to be sitting 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, making the decisions to affect you. That’s what he has to do. He has to make it clear it is not about anyone else out there but me, Barack Obama. HARRIS: David? GERGEN: I also think that Barack Obama would serve himself well if he sat down now for additional interviews with the press that start off pushing off and away from this. He handled himself well on Fox yesterday with Chris Wallace. I think that if he now — in Indiana and North Carolina — were to buy an hour’s worth of time in each media market and sit down in a round-table discussion with the voters from that area, with working people and talk about his hopes and plans, and let them fire away questions for what he’s going to do. And let them just get a chance to know what’s on his mind and what his priorities are, as opposed to this sideshow. HARRIS: Yeah. GERGEN: He needs to have a direct conversation with voters now, not a speech — we all know how marvelous he is in those speeches — but a direct converstation about what his hopes and dreams are, to transform this country, and he needs to that very directly with voters, with working people. HARRIS: David Gergen, thank you. Roland Martin, thank you. Boy, we needed this this morning, just a better handle to put it in a little bit better context. Thank you both. GERGEN: Thank you. MARTIN: Thank you. With what was now reported by the Daily Caller concerning folks on the left-wing JournoList actively trying to squelch all media references to Wright, one has to seriously wonder just how many news outlets participated in this disgusting cover-up. Stay tuned.

Media Liberals on ‘JournoList’ Plotted to Bury the Jeremiah Wright Story in 2008

The Daily Caller has another scoop on the leftist JournoList e-mails today, recalling when they all wanted the Jeremiah Wright story to be dead and buried in the spring of 2008. Jonathan Strong explained “Employees of news organizations including Time, Politico, the Huffington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Guardian, Salon and the New Republic participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage.” Stephanopoulos asked, “Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?”…The tough questioning from ABC left many of them outraged. “George [Stephanopoulos],” fumed Richard Kim of the Nation, is “being a disgusting little rat snake.” In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, “Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.” Michael Tomasky, a writer for the Guardian, also tried to rally his fellow members of Journolist: “Listen folks–in my opinion, we all have to do what we can to kill ABC and this idiocy in whatever venues we have. This isn’t about defending Obama. This is about how the [mainstream media] kills any chance of discourse that actually serves the people .” “Richard Kim got this right above: ‘a horrible glimpse of general election press strategy.’ He’s dead on,” Tomasky continued. “We need to throw chairs now, try as hard as we can to get the call next time. Otherwise the questions in October will be exactly like this. This is just a disease.” The most eye-opening quote may come from Chris Hayes, a regular guest and occasional guest host on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, writing about how America is a murderous, torturing giant, and that’s much more outrageous than Wright. In fact, Hayes echoed Wright’s sermons: Chris Hayes of the Nation posted on April 29, 2008, urging his colleagues to ignore Wright. Hayes directed his message to “particularly those in the ostensible mainstream media” who were members of the list. The Wright controversy, Hayes argued, was not about Wright at all. Instead, “It has everything to do with the attempts of the right to maintain control of the country.” Hayes castigated his fellow liberals for criticizing Wright. “All this hand wringing about just how awful and odious Rev. Wright remarks are just keeps the hustle going.” “Our country disappears people. It tortures people. It has the blood of as many as one million Iraqi civilians — men, women, children, the infirmed — on its hands. You’ll forgive me if I just can’t quite dredge up the requisite amount of outrage over Barack Obama’s pastor,” Hayes wrote. For followers of the Clinton scandals, it gets incredibly rich when Katha Pollitt confesses: Katha Pollitt – Hayes’s colleague at the Nation – didn’t disagree on principle, though she did sound weary of the propaganda. “I hear you. but I am really tired of defending the indefensible. The people who attacked Clinton on Monica were prissy and ridiculous, but let me tell you it was no fun, as a feminist and a woman, waving aside as politically irrelevant and part of the vast rightwing conspiracy Paula, Monica, Kathleen, Juanita,” Pollitt said. “Part of me doesn’t like this s–t either,” agreed Spencer Ackerman, then of the Washington Independent. “But what I like less is being governed by racists and warmongers and criminals.” Ackerman went on: I do not endorse a Popular Front, nor do I think you need to. It’s not necessary to jump to Wright-qua-Wright’s defense. What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a rightwinger’s [sic] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear . Obviously I mean this rhetorically.

Rick Ross Tells The Story Behind Drake’s Extended ‘Aston Martin Music’

Ross tells Mixtape Daily we might see the unofficial track on a Teflon Don re-release. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross’ Teflon Don LP came out Tuesday (July 20), and by now, if you’ve been listening to the radio and the mixtapes, you’ve already heard the extended version of “Aston Martin Music,” a highlight of the project. The track features Chrisette Michele and Drake sharing hook duties. On the extended version, which is not on the album, Drake adds a rap verse. Ross stopped by our 1515 headquarters on Monday to explain Drizzy’s extra vocals. “It boils down to me having the idea, the concept,” Ross said. “Shout-out to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I got the production from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I wanted to do something else, two-seater music. That’s what I like to call it when it’s personal music for you and that special female that’s riding shotgun in a two-seater. Chrisette Michele, she was on ‘Mafia Music 2.’ She came to Miami to film the video. I got her in the studio to do the first half of this idea I had, which is ‘Aston Martin Music.’ She was like, ‘What you mean just do half of the chorus?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, just do half. I’mma save the other half.’ ” Trusting Ross’ direction, the singer got in and laid the vocals we hear today: “Riding to the music, this is how we do it/ All night/ Racing down the freeway/ Just me and my baby/ In our ride.” “She loved the beat. She wrote her lyrics,” Ross continued of Michele’s session for “Aston Martin.” “It took her 10, 15 minutes to cut her vocals. I’m sitting there like, ‘Wow. All right, all right.’ At that point, I didn’t know who was gonna sing the second half.” The Bawse said listening to Drake’s new album, in his leisure time, inspired him to make that call to his friend from Toronto. “I sent it to the homie,” the Miami rap lord described. “He laced me. Right then, he was ready to jump on his verse. Right then, he was ready to cock and load. I was like, ‘I know you finishing your joint. Just give me that half a chorus, and I’mma make it do what it do. He loved the record. I got it back. He laced it at the point. When he heard [the finished version], it was magic. He was like, ‘I’m finnin’ to go in the studio, Ross. I’mma need to get on that.’ ” A version of the song with just an extended chorus and Drake’s verse called “Paris Morton Music” came out shortly after “Aston Martin Music” leaked to the Net almost two weeks ago. “I talk slicker than a pimp from Augusta,” Drake raps on the track. Then, one of Ross’ engineers mixed Drake’s verse and extended chorus with the album version of “AMM,” and that song has lived on the Net and mixtapes ever since. It’s also getting play on the radio. Ross said he has no problems with an unofficial extended version of “AMM” being out. He might even include it on a repackaging of Teflon Don in the future. “It’s only right,” Ross said. “I got on [Drake’s] first single [‘Find Your Love’]. He even put a twist on the title after some sexy ladies, I believe. It made it feel good. That’s what that music is about. On that re-release, that deluxe packaging, that’s what you may get. You never know.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Wiz Khalifa Is A Top-Five Finalist For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Summit’ Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid Wiz Khalifa Photo: Atlantic It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: Wiz Khalifa Rising in the Ranks : When Wiz Khalifa talks gang affiliations, it’s not about red or blue. It’s the yellow and black: the colors of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins of Pittsburgh. The past couple of years for Khalifa have brought constant elevation, not just with his daily fruits and vegetables (the green kind), but in the public’s awareness of him and his artistic acumen. Wiz spent 2007 and ’08 waiting to drop an album on Warner Bros. Records that never materialized. He kept his name in the streets and on the Internet by releasing a slew of mixtapes in the interim, developing a small cult following. Wiz’s fans were eventually dubbed the Taylor Gang , after a group of MCs he was down with in Pittsburgh. Last November, he put out an independent body of work called Deal or No Deal as a sort of declaration that he would make it in the game regardless of whether he had the backing of a major label. Deal spawned the popular “This Plane,” which has been soaring in the past few weeks with a video on MTV Jams and, of course, online. The blogs and Twitter is where Wiz has thrived unlike any MC in his peer group. The Taylors have been very active with their rabid love for Khalifa. His Kush & OJ mixtape was so heavily downloaded and talked about when it came out in April (just in time for 4/20) that it became a trending topic on Twitter and Google. Wiz’s musical appeal lies with his melodies and his lovable stoner mentality. Early Insight : “There’s certain cities where you have that hometown pride. Pittsburgh is just one of those cities where you go hard for anything that’s Pittsburgh,” Wiz explained. “Knowing that everybody’s got my back and knowing that I keep it real with everyone back home, ’cause I still live in Pittsburgh, so people still see me every day. People see me at the gas station, eating wherever everybody’s eating. I sign autographs and take pictures, but I’m still a regular person. I never thought I was going to be that dude — you know, to really put Pittsburgh on the map — but it’s cool.” Blistering Ballistics : “I live life sucka free/ That’s why them n—as you be wit talk down like they don’t f— wit me/ I get money realistically/ And the homies show me love/ Groupies wanna leave the club wit me/ Ain’t nothin’ to a G/ Let your hair blow in the breeze/ Roll some bomb-ass weed.” — from Khalifa’s “The Kid Frankie” Forecast : The tide has definitely turned in Wiz’s favor. His Internet presence is steel-cage solid, and his fanbase has been steadily growing. Now his big-homie peers, such as Rick Ross , have taken notice and are calling him for features. The biggest thing Wiz has on his side right now is freedom. He’s a free agent, making his next album at his leisure and with his own creative vision. Kush & OJ is being heralded as his best project to date, so his follow-up is pivotal. Besides the aforementioned album, Wiz has also been crafting his mixtape Cabin Fever (think more private jets than out in the woods), so the sky can literally be the limit. MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! DC NBC Anchor Wendy Rieger Hosts Event Honoring Truther, Marxist Van Jones

A local NBC News Washington DC correspondent emceed an event Tuesday night honoring former White House Green Jobs Czar Van Jones. Jones, for those who don’t remember, was forced to resign from the White House after it came to light that he had signed a 9/11 “Truther” petition. He apparently ascribes to a number of radical ideologies, including Marxism and Black Liberation Theology. He was a notable defending of convicted cop-killer (and leftist cause celebre) Mumia Abu-Jamal, and insisted that “white polluters and the white environmentalists are essentially steering poison into the people of color communities because they don’t have a racial justice frame.” WRC News 5’s Wendy Rieger hosted the event honoring this man. “Her involvement is simply to help support the organization,” a network spokesman told the Daily Caller , “and she had no involvement in choosing the attendees or award recipients.” Fair enough, but Green DMV, the organization that held Green Night Out, as it was called, considers Van Jones worthy of praise, billing him as a “globally recognized, award-winning pioneer in human rights and the clean-energy economy.” That speaks volumes about that organization. Rieger hosted the event in a professional capacity, which suggests that she and NBC News both consider the organization a worthy one. NBC insists that Rieger’s prominent presence was not in any way a sign of support for Green DMV’s attitude towards Jones, but he was not an obscure figure at this event. In fact, Rieger’s and Jones’s faces both graced the graphic advertising the event .

Bristol Palin And Levi Johnston Get Engaged Again

Young couple said they hadn’t yet told Sarah Palin about engagement. By Gil Kaufman Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston Photo: New York Daily News More than a year and a half after calling off their first engagement, Playgirl model Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin are ready to give marriage another try. The couple first got engaged after Bristol became pregnant with their now 18-month-old son, Tripp, and took the stage together with Palin’s mother, former vice presidential candidate and half-term Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, at the 2008 Republican National Convention . They broke up just weeks after Tripp’s birth in December 2008, but the couple told Us Weekly in this week’s cover story that they are ready to get hitched. “We got engaged two weeks ago,” abstinence advocate Bristol, 19, told the magazine. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.” That might be the sticky part. Johnston, 20, recently offered a public apology to the Palins, especially to Sarah, for the harsh comments he made about the family in the fallout from his breakup with Bristol. Despite agreeing to pose with Tripp on the cover of the magazine and announcing their second engagement on the cover, they admitted that they hadn’t yet told Sarah Palin about their plans. The couple said they reconnected three months ago while working on a custody plan for Tripp and unexpectedly rekindled their romance. “I really thought we were over,” Johnston said. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking — and then we took Tripp for a walk.” Bristol added, “When he left that night, we didn’t hug or kiss, but I was thinking how different it was. He texted me: ‘I miss you. I love you. I want to be with you again.’ … I was in shock.” Sarah Palin has been very outspoken about her feelings about Johnston in the past, lashing out at him when he claimed last fall that she referred to her infant song Trig — who has Down Syndrome — as “retarded,” slamming the aspiring model/actor and high school dropout by referring to him as “Ricky Hollywood” during an Oprah Winfrey interview and mocking his “aspiring porn” career. That contentious relationship has Bristol a bit worried about how her mother will react to their engagement. “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be,” she said of the outspoken Fox News contributor, who had not yet weighed in on the news at press time. “Hopefully, she will jump onboard.”
