But how do you know you’ve really arrived? It’s when you get invited to perform at Sting’s annual Rainforest Fund benefit show. On Thursday night (May 13) Gaga was on-hand for the star-studded show at New York’s Carnegie Hall, which also featured performances by Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, host Sting, Mary J. Blige and Blondie’s Debbie Harry. Wearing a frumpy gray old-lady wig, a white mini-hoop skirt and matching leggings that looked like they were made out of Ace bandages, Gaga sat down at the piano for what the New York Daily News described as a “sober version of one of the most earnest pop songs of all time,” Ben E. King’s timeless “Stand by Me.” She also hooked up with pop icon John again for a run through her song “Speechless,” which segued into his hit “Your Song” in what the paper described as a seamless collaboration between two stars who seemed “made for each other.” The 21st annual show opened with Sting singing “Englishman in New York.” He later hooked up with Mary J. for their duet, “Whenever I Say Your Name.” Springsteen belted out Bryan Adams’ “Cuts Like a Knife” and “Dancing in the Dark.” Though he played such classics as “Philadelphia Freedom,” John also got in on the cover action, taking on the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City” and Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and “Material Girl,” accompanied by a kick line of male go-go dancers wearing Speedos. Harry performed the Blondie classic “The Tide Is High,” while Dame Shirley Bassey busted out two of her iconic James Bond themes, “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds Are Forever,” as well as her hit “Big Spender.” Chic leader Nile Rodgers served up “Le Freak” and Sting returned later in the show for a cover of the Fine Young Cannibals’ 1989 hit “She Drives Me Crazy.” The whole gang ended the night by taking on Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Related Artists Lady Gaga Elton John Bruce Springsteen

But I want everybody to be focused on that U.N. album, ’cause when that comes out, it’s gonna be bananas. Stupid. This August. [‘Speakin Tongues’], this is the first single off of it.” As of now, the U.N. is officially just Killa and Vado; they have three other artists who are down with them but not signed. Cam and company have 10 videos coming to the Web in the next several days, including “Ooh Baby” “Large in the Streets” and “Stop It Five.” Vado is going to put out his solo mixtape with DJ Drama, Slime Flu, soon, and that brings us the business at hand: Boss of All Bosses 2.5. “At first, it was like the lost tapes. Tracks that were throwaways, then we added more flavor to it,” Vado explained. “What happened with the 2.5, ” Cam clarified, “we gave Drama maybe 25 songs [for Boss of All Bosses 2 ]. ‘My judgment was jaded, and I felt my life was in danger,’ he says of his attempt to illegally purchase firearms. By Kara Warner T.I. on “Larry King Live” Photo: CNN Larry King is sometimes criticized for conducting softball or fluff interviews, but for Thursday night’s (May 13) sit-down with rapper T.I. — his first in-depth interview since leaving prison — King kept his questions hard-hitting and pointed. Clifford “T.I.” Harris was sentenced to one year and one day of prison last year following his arrest in October 2007 for attempting to illegally purchase firearms. The rapper was subsequently released to a halfway house in December to serve out the remainder of his sentence before his ultimate release at the end of March. King got right to the point and asked T.I. why he attempted the purchase of firearms in the first place. “It came from an attempt that was made on my life,” he said. “My best friend [ Philant Johnson ] had died in my arms. It caused a state of depression and paranoia. My judgment was jaded, and I felt my life was in danger. … At the time, when I felt the need to have these things, I never took into consideration the legalities; I only took into consideration the protection of my life and family.” King pressed Tip on whether he has truly put the “trouble” behind him. T.I. insisted that he is a “gangster no more,” he absolutely does not own a weapon and he is looking toward the future and to evolve. “In having time to sit and reflect, if you take the time and use it to your advantage, you see [that], even though all those rounds were fired that night, you didn’t have a firearm and you’re still here,” he said. “Obviously, the firearms aren’t what’s keeping you alive. I had to take that into consideration. I had to apply it to the way I live my daily life.” Throughout the interview, T.I. was calm and composed and answered all of King’s questions without pause — save for when the CNN vet asked if he had ever shot a gun at anyone. T.I. called out the Fifth Amendment before answering that he had shot a gun “at a range.” Regardless, anything having to do with drugs or guns was referred to as “my past.” T.I. seemed genuinely focused on his future, working with at-risk youth and mentioned his love for his six children and “special lady” Tameka. He also reiterated his personal responsibility in moving on from the events that led to his incarceration. “The main thing I can do to protect myself in the future is to understand my position,” he said. “I can’t put myself in an environment where it will require me to have a handgun. I just stay places where I can be cool. I have security now. … I take full responsibility for everything that happened to me. I’m a full believer that your life is what you make it. Music mogul reportedly spent an hour talking with the incarcerated rapper. By Jayson Rodriguez Diddy (file) Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images Diddy paid a surprise visit to the incarcerated Lil Wayne on Wednesday, according to a source who spoke with the New York Daily News over the weekend. The music mogul made the trek to the Eric M. Taylor Center at Rikers Island and spent an hour talking with the fellow hip-hop star. According to the report, Diddy is on the list of approved visitors the Cash Money artist maintains. In March, MTV News examined the visitors policy at New York prisons. Inmates are permitted visitors weekly, from a number of different people, including lawyers, media and just about anyone who is willing to make the trip, which the corrections department suggests be made via public transportation. Diddy, reportedly, eschewed his normal chauffeur service in favor of the public shuttle to the center. An inquiry made by MTV News to a representative for Diddy, to confirm his visit, was unanswered as of press time. To keep inmates safe, a guard notifies the jailed residents about visitors, and they must agree to the visit if the person isn’t on the pre-approved list. Each week, inmates are permitted two visits, which can last up to an hour and occur any day of the week except Monday and Tuesday, when the facility is closed to all visits. On those days when visitors are welcomed, hours for visits range from 12:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Within those options lie scheduling blocks dictated by a sliding scale that is determined by the first letter of a prisoner’s last name and available on the Department of Corrections website. Visits by religious persons, media members or the rapper’s legal team do not count toward an inmate’s scheduled visits for the week. What do you think about Diddy visiting Lil Wayne in prison? Sha Money XL has signed on to become the senior VP of A&R at Def Jam Records. The label has had such a rich history of Queens-bred fellas in the boardroom, from its founder Russell Simmons to Irv Gotti to one of Sha’s mentors, the late Jam Master Jay. XL is excited to plant his flag in the cherished hip-hop recording house. “I’ve been floating around this industry since I’ve just been executive-producing 50 [Cent]’s albums,” XL explained Thursday at the MTV offices. “Freelancing, doing my own thing. I’ve been able to meet with L.A. Reid. We’ve been having some great conversations. Finally, the call came. It felt so good. Def Jam is such a strong company and strong roster. The staff is amazing. I felt it instantly. I knew that this is something I can do with my New York vision and New York swag and bring that for all the guys that’s based out here. And the things that was needed to excite the industry as well, internally and externally. I connect with everybody by all levels.” Sha said that after being with the G-Unit for so many years, there is no such thing as pressure to him anymore. “I work good under pressure,” he said. “Working with 50, I know what needs to get done. I don’t feel pressure. I do the things that need to be done. As long as artists listen and we really become businessmen in this business, as we say we are, I think we should all prosper. I’m looking to make the company more money and take it to the top, the highest level.” So with 50 Cent a free agent, free to bring himself and his label — which includes Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo — anywhere he pleases, will Sha try to secure a spot for his longtime friends at Def Jam? “I spoke to Fif, to [his manager Chris] Lighty. I would love to see that there,” Sha admitted. “Banks has an amazing record right now, independently. If things work out, then yeah, I would love to see that happen.” If the Unit came to Def Jam, things would get interesting, to say the least. Shyne, Rick Ross, Nas and DJ Khaled, people who Fif and the Unit have had problems with through the years, are all on the roster. “I’m a businessman,” Sha Money said when asked how he would feel having the Unit in the same building with some of their adversaries. “The beef stuff, I’m over. We at a certain point in life where we don’t even need that. We eat that. So I will let them speak for their own, but honestly, I would like to see a company continue to grow. And I think G-Unit is in a position — coming from an independent space — that can continue to do their thing. I would like to provide an opportunity for them to continue to grow.” While the Unit deal is just in the talking stages now, Sha says his top priority is making sure Juelz Santana gets his LP out.
