5 Shows You Should Catch Up On Before Deciding You Actually Like Wipeout

It’s almost among us, friends. Yes, not much longer now before we — popcorn bowl in hand, phone off the hook — gather around our televisions for the third season of the show that perhaps best epitomizes summer television: No, not True Blood — though that returns tonight with vampires, werewolves and crazy sexcapades. It’s Wipeout . I know I’m going to end up watching at least one episode of it, and I know that I will hate myself. But I don’t want that for you, dear reader! I want more than for you to be lost in the mostly vast wasteland that is summer television (OK, there is a smattering of good stuff here and there). And so, before you decide to make Wipeout a part of your weekly routine after it premieres June 22, consider catching up with these five shows instead.

London’s Lord Mayor Cries: ‘Stop Ruining Our Pensions By Being Mean To BP’

“The Lord Mayor of London arrives to make a short speech” Image credit: UK Student Life Digby brings to our attention that a great many UK pensioners rely on BP stock as an underpinning of their retirement income (as, apparently, do some 35% of Americans). Hence, they are angry about BP’s ‘poor’ treatment in US media (and on blogs like this one we can suppose) as it is trashing their stock. I bet they really hate Obama’s demand that dividends be withheld until the damages are assessed.

Can Someone Give Ted Danson a Hug?

When THR got a bunch of dramatic actors together last month for an Emmy roundtable, the trade noted that “humor dominated the hourlong discussion.” That’s a stark contrast to the comedy roundtable THR just put up, where TV funnymen like Jim Parsons, Neil Patrick Harris, and Ed Helms worry and excoriate themselves and get all “Tears of a Clown”-y. None self-flagellate harder, though, than Ted Danson.

R. I. P bp we will remember you or not.

Today bp stocks plummeted 15% and all the attempts to cover the oil spill and fix the damage have failed. The company is going down for sure. there are so many problems coming to bp including criminal charges and the fines from the clear water act will amount over 10billion dollars. Watch this video and see how Rachel Maddow extensively explain the damages of the oil spill including all the fines that bp is liable for. She also explain the negligence of bp and the role that the government is playing in the whole catastrophe. Thanks, Brava added by: BRAVATRAVELS

Studios score another TKO against Pirate Bay

The Pirate Bay, a BitTorrent search engine that Hollywood has tried in vain to shut down for years, was offline Monday morning. The blackout was presumably the result of an injunction won recently by the film studios that ordered The Pirate Bay's bandwidth provider to stop servicing the site. This is only the latest chapter in the cat-and-mouse game between Hollywood's big studios and the site's operators. The Pirate Bay has lost at least two other bandwidth providers in the past few years and the site typically just acquires a new host. That is likely to happen once again in this case, according to a source close to the site. According to the blog TorrentFreak, the CB3ROB, operator of host CyberBunker, was ordered last week by the Regional Court of Hamburg, Germany, to cut off The Pirate Bay. A year ago, four men associated with operating The Pirate Bay were found guilty of copyright violations by a Swedish court. They were sentence to a year in jail and ordered to pay 30 million Swedish kronor ($3.6 million) in damages to copyright holders, among them a number of American film studios. The four men–Peter Sunde, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Fredrik Neij, and Carl Lundstr

Glee Creator Urges: Boycott Newsweek!

In last week’s edition of Newsweek , Ramin Setoodeh wrote an article that made one controversial statement and asked one controversial question: First, he said, gay actors cannot pull of straight roles. Then, he asked: Why is there no A-list gay movie star? Kristin Chenoweth fired back at the essay, citing Setoodeh’s examples of failed straight roles (e.g. Cynthia Nixon as Miranda in Sex and the City ) as “sloppy,” and referring to the entire piece as “bigoted and factually inaccurate.” Now, Glee creator Ryan Murphy has taken his critique of the article even further: he’s written an open letter, asking everyone to boycott Newsweek. In it, he says: This article is as misguided as it is shocking and hurtful. It shocks me because Mr. Setoodeh is himself gay. But what is the most shocking of all is that Newsweek went ahead and published such a blatantly homophobic article in the first place…and has remained silent in the face of ongoing (and justified) criticism. Would the magazine have published an article where the author makes a thesis statement that minority actors should only be allowed and encouraged to play domestics? I think not. Today, I have asked GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios to stand with me and others and ask for an immediate boycott of Newsweek magazine until an apology is issued to Sean Hayes and other brave out actors who were cruelly singled out in this damaging, needlessly cruel, and mind-blowingly bigoted piece. An apology should also be issued to all gay readers of the magazine…steelworkers, parents, accountants, doctors, etc…proud hardworking Americans who, if this article is to be believed, should only identify themselves as “queeny” people (a word used by Setoodeh in the article) who stand at the back of the bus and embrace an outdated decades old stereotype. Give me a call, Ramin… I’d love to hear from you. I’ll even give you a free copy of our Madonna CD, on which we cover “Open Your Heart,” a song you should play in your house and car on repeat. Our take on Setoodeh’s viewpoint? Putting aside homophobic rhetoric and anythong of that nature, it’s simply incorrect. Off the top of our heads, we can come up with numerous gay actors that are widely accepted in straight roles (Nixon, Neil Patrick Harris on How I Met Your Mother, Cherry Jones on 24 , Lily Tomlin on Damages ). It’s difficult to make a serious point of any kind when your thesis is misguided. What do you think about gay actors in straight roles? Do you have any problem taking them seriously?
