‘Star Trek’ Villain Forces Kirk To Grow, Chris Pine Says

Benedict Cumberbatch’s character ‘not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy,’ Pine explains to MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Pine Photo: When J.J. Abrams got the opportunity to helm one of the most beloved franchises of all time, he took “Star Trek” literally where no man has gone before. The alternate timeline of his reboot laid down the law that this ” Star Trek ” can and will go anywhere its creators want. When MTV News spoke to the captain of the Starship Enterprise, Chris Pine , his carefully measured words praised the work from Abrams and his screenwriters — Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof — on the upcoming sequel. “There is so much happening in their script. I can’t say much of anything,” Pine told MTV News while promoting his next film, Friday’s “People Like Us.” “They come from TV land, all of them: J.J., Bob, Alex and Damon. They’ve worked together in the highest-pressure situation in television for years. That machine is well-oiled.” The creative team’s background in television is what Pine said allows them to change things on the fly and continually improve the film. “What you also get in that circumstance is it’s a constantly evolving beast — the script, the material, how it’s going to look, how J.J.’s going to shoot it,” he said. “There is nothing set in stone, which is tremendously frightening, but also extremely exhilarating, especially when it’s like a finely tuned racecar. They just know how to do it. In this constantly evolution, the script that they had written kept getting better and better.” For anyone familiar with the crew’s previous work, which includes “Lost” and most recently “Prometheus,” it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Pine complimented the mythical qualities of the screenplay. “What they’re so good at is this kind of mythic reinvention. They’re really good at writing myth, and these characters — I think what people will find with everybody — is that these characters go on mythic arcs,” Pine said. “It’s all about growing up. These are young men and young women, and they are not the crew that we know from the series. They’re developing into that. It’s a long way to go there.” Even with mystery surrounding the entire production, fans are most desperate for answers when it comes to just one aspect of the sequel: Benedict Cumberbatch joined the film as a villain, whose identity has yet to be revealed. Pine complimented the actor, but couldn’t say much more than that the villain will bring out new qualities in Kirk. “It is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow,” Pine said. “As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he’s fascinating. He’s got this deep resonate voice. He’s a fascinating face. He’s a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he’s not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Star Trek 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Damon Lindelof on Prometheus’s Ending and a Handy, Spoilery Alien Infographic

The Prometheus post-mortem continues (really, the fact that it’s still provoking discourse says something… right?) with screenwriter Damon Lindelof talking end-of-movie spoilers with TIME Magazine. Namely, what does it mean that you-know-who does you-know-what with the whatsit at the end? Kidding! Dive in to hear the LOST veteran address the certain future of our heroes, plus: An infographic that breaks down Prometheus ‘s DNA in one handy chart. Spoilers throughout! First up, TIME talks with Lindelof about the smoke monster. I mean the android, David (Michael Fassbender), who pulls some seriously heinous moves in Prometheus at the behest of one master, only to seemingly switch allegiances at the end. Can Shaw (Noomi Rapace) trust David’s head to direct her where she wants to go, i.e. the space beyond space, from whence the Engineers of doom hail? Lindelof says yes, because David has a robot crush on her . I think they’re going where she wants to go. His fundamental programming has been scrapped. Weyland [the man who built and programmed him] is dead and so now his programming is coming from God knows where. Is he being programmed by Elizabeth, or is it his own internal curiosity now that Weyland isn’t telling him what to do any more? He’s always been interested in Elizabeth, remember that: He’s watching her dreams when she’s sleeping in much the same way that he watches Lawrence of Arabia . He’s a strange robot that has a curious crush on a human being , and when Weyland is eliminated, I think he is genuinely interested in what she’s interested in. He reaches out partly for survival, but partly out of curiosity, and I think he’s sincere that he’ll take her wherever she wants to go. Right. Well, interspecies relations have taken stranger routes in the Alien universe. Speaking of which, artist Carlos Poon whipped up a handy infographic (via the folks at Dangerous Minds ) to help your brain keep track of the origins of species in Prometheus . Alright gang, mysteries solved! Right? RIIIIGHT?? [ TIME , Dangerous Minds ]

‘Star Trek 2’ Officially Lands J.J. Abrams As Director

Helmer of the 2009 franchise could begin shooting this winter, according to reports. By Gil Kaufman J.J. Abrams Photo: Getty Images Sometimes, if you wait long enough (and blog hard enough), the universe will hear your cries of anguish and soothe them with a big glass of thirst-quenching Romulan Ale. Or, better yet, provide confirmation that J.J. Abrams has finally committed to directing the “Star Trek” sequel. Either way, you’re pretty psyched. After indicating that he was still up in the air about directing the anticipated sequel to his wildly successful reboot of the space franchise, New York Magazine’s Vulture blog is reporting that Abrams is onboard and that pre-production is under way. Citing unnamed insiders familiar with the “Super 8” director’s plans, Vulture reported that the script is expected to be done by month’s end and that shooting could begin this winter. Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news on Wednesday (September 14). Abrams recently finished shooting the fourth “Mission: Impossible” movie, “Ghost Protocol” — which again stars Tom Cruise, along with Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway and Paula Patton — has hedged in the past about whether he would take up another tour on the Enterprise before a killer script was in place. In August, he told Collider , “Once you say, ‘We’re ready to go, but we don’t have a finished script yet,’ or, ‘I’m directing the thing and here’s the release date, but we don’t have a finished script,’ what starts to happen is that you’re suddenly in production on a movie where you’re thinking, ‘Oh my God, we weren’t really ready!’ ” In July, producer/screenwriter Damon Lindelof told MTV News that work has continued on the script, even as the director’s chair question remained up in the air. “There was a lot of work going on over the course of the last year between Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] and I,” he said. “We generated, like, a 90-page half-script half-treatment based on some meetings that we’ve had with J.J [Abrams]. Now that J.J. is finally finished with ‘Super 8’ we’ve kind of, not thrown out that material, but we’re reworking a lot of it.” Describing how the four writers wrote the original movie, Lindelof said, “Those four people sort of sitting in a room bouncing ideas off each other, challenging those ideas, sort of shaking the tree.” At the time, he said the idea was to get back to that form of creative thinking. “Because ‘Trek 2’ has to be better than ‘Trek 1,’ ” he said, likening the sequel to the increase in quality from the already great “Batman Begins” to the exceptional “The Dark Knight.” “It has to.” He said at the time that they were working hard to make a great leap forward in storytelling. “We are deep into that process now and writing.” A spokesperson for Paramount Pictures could not be reached for comment at press time. Epic Damon Lindelof Interview Chronicles His Prometheus Journey With Ridley Scott

Kevin Pollak’s highly entertaining and extremely long The Kevin Pollak Chat Show invited on screenwriter Damon Lindelof and allowed him to monologue freely about Star Trek , Cowboys & Aliens , and — perhaps most notably — working with Ridley Scott on Prometheus , and how the film relates to Scott’s seminal sci-fi work. If this show weren’t so damn intoxicating, it might’ve been a chore to get to the Alien(s) -related story. Fortunately, that’s not the case. Full transcription and video after the jump.

Has ‘Spoiler Culture’ Ruined Twist Endings For Good?

Take it away, Chuck Klosterman! “Are screenwriters now affected by ‘spoiler culture’ before they even begin the writing process? If you know a twist will be unavoidably revealed before the majority of people see the work itself, and if you concede that selling and marketing a film with a major secret will be more complicated for everyone involved … would you even try? Would you essentially stop yourself from trying to write a movie that’s structured like The Sixth Sense ?” [ Grantland ]

Why Darren Criss Might be the Next Michael Emerson, and Why That Isn’t a Good Thing for Glee

The unwritten rules for the second season of a hit television series are similar to the ones governing movie sequels: Everything has to be bigger, has to be louder, and has to include at least one major casting addition. In the case of Lost , the second season brought increasingly convoluted stakes (The Hatch! The Others!), some shocking character deaths (Shannon!) and the addition of Michael Emerson to the already bulging cast. What began as a well-received guest role for the veteran New York actor became a three-and-a-half season stay on the devilish island. Emerson’s breakout performance not only forced Lost creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse to shift their narrative, but also cemented him forever in the minds of television watchers as Benjamin Linus. Glee star Darren Criss is on a very similar path, and because of that, it might be time for Gleeks to get concerned.
