‘It should be interesting,’ Aoki says of the eclectic collaborations. By Adam Murphy, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Steve Aoki Photo: MTV News At this year’s Winter Music Conference in Miami, MTV News spoke to some of the biggest names in dance music and beyond. One name that we couldn’t escape was West coast electronic tycoon Steve Aoki. To assign any one title to Steve Aoki is to do his talents a disservice. DJ, producer and record-label owner (Dim Mak) are but a few of the hats which he somehow manages to wear all at once. And if you’ve heard him spin, Aoki doesn’t miss a beat. As mainstream artists are increasingly consulting underground icons of dance music for production advice, Aoki has a well-trodden path from the major labels to his doorstep, having remixed hit singles for Weezer, Kid Cudi, Robin Thicke, The Killers and beyond. On the international scene, however, Aoki is a completely different phenomenon. His track “I’m in the House,” which features Zuper Blahq (who is almost certainly the alter ego of Will.I.Am ) has been making waves in the clubs and on the indie and dance singles charts abroad since it dropped in November of last year. This reboot of the chant-along sensibility of classic house (also revamped by David Guetta in “On the Dancefloor”) may offer us a glimpse of Aoki’s forthcoming LP. “With my album I’m doing a couple of different tracks with some familiar voices,” Aoki said. “Zuper Blahq, Kid Cudi, Lil John, Weezer, Black Star, Uffie, Sky Ferreira … just mixing it up with some hip-hop vocals, rock vocals, house vocals. So yeah, it should be interesting.” Aoki’s eclectic sensibility and his D.I.Y. spirit perhaps stem from his roots in — of all things — hardcore punk bands. And as more and more “bedroom producers” ascend to international stardom, the independent spirit seems to be the look of the moment. “We’re all doing it ourselves,” Aoki offered. “We’re making enough of a riot in our own world that more people are getting interested and want to get involved in what we’re doing. And if it makes sense to do a collaboration with a familiar voice that everyone knows, then it can make sense on both sides. It can work on the underground and it can work in the commercial world.” When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. ‘I keep setting the bar for myself,’ the ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ dance hitmaker says. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 Photo: MTV News You probably know his music from the promo for “America’s Best Dance Crew” and might even have fallen in love with the sinister sound — but who is behind the infectious beats and anthemic sounds? Meet Deadmau5. Pronounced “dead mouse” and known to his family and friends as Joel Zimmerman, the Canadian born, Grammy-nominated producer is one of the hottest dance acts around, and his headlining appearance at the Winter Music Conference’s Ultra Music Festival in front of 100,000 fans has only further solidified the fact that the Mau5 is here to stay. But who is the man behind the mask that has become so iconic in the dance-music community? “Long story short, a mouse went into my computer and died, and I found him in there when I was changing my video card,” he explained. After word spread on the Internet through various chat rooms and blogs, “everyone just statted calling me ‘that dead mouse guy’ because of he story, and it just stuck. And the 5 was because I couldn’t spell out D-E-A-D-M-O-U-S-E because it was too long to have as a name in the chat room, so I had to trim a character, so I was just like, whatever, and I put a 5 in there and it stuck.” A computer buff turned international dance-music superstar, Deadmau5 has had a rapid rise to success. Just four years ago at Winter Music Conference 2007 he was peddling his CDs and stickers on the street like scores of other DJ and producer hopefuls do each and every year. “It’s incredible to see someone catapult from obscurity to stardom in less than two years,” said David Waxman, longtime DJ and current Ultra Records executive. “He’s taking art to a new level. He’s not just a DJ remixing on the fly, but more of a musician and a producer — he makes it a lot more interesting.” Indeed, Deadmau5 has not only become an icon to the electronic music novice and fanatic alike, but he is also redefining what it means to produce dance music. And his shows have become legendary in the dance-music community, as he works with a lavish intricate array of mixers, MIDI devices and computer software — all while wearing his unmistakable evil “Mau5Head.” With the massive success of “Ghosts N Stuff” from the “ABDC” promo, Deadmau5 insists there’s more to him than that one track. “I’ve just got to keep doing new and cool things and being on par with that, because I really, really don’t want to be this ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ guy, you know what I mean? So I really got to, like, I keep setting the bar for myself and sort of, like, screwing myself because I’m like, ‘Oh man, I’ll never do that again, something on that level,’ and that’s kind of cool because it just pushes me to come up with something like that.” Coming off of a massive year with his smash release For Lack of a Better Name with singles like the aforementioned “Ghosts N Stuff” along with “Strobe” and killer Kaskade collaborations “I Remember” and “Move for Me,” ‘Mau5 has solidified himself as an electronic music star whose frenzied fans have put him on the top of his game, often imitating his signature mau5head. “Dude, I’ve been at some shows and some kids rock out these mau5heads that are better than mine!” he said. However, he’s planning to debut his brand-new, one-of-a-kind mau5head at the upcoming Coachella festival in Indio, California. “It’s just like an HD, LED matrix that’s insanely huge all in a big mau5head, so it’s, like, no longer a mau5head — it’s a compound spherical video surface. It’s the only one in the world!” With his new album on the horizon and set to be released before summer, Deadmau5 assures us he has some surprises in store. Unveiling Tommy Lee as his surprise drummer at Ultra Music Festival at the end of March, who will he pair up with next? “I’m working on my wish list right now and I don’t want to give it away, because I’m working with these artists and everyone knows who they are and everyone is going to go, ‘WHAT!?!?’ but it’ll sound good — don’t worry, it’s not Justin Bieber or anyone crazy!” ‘Mau5 joked. Are you excited to hear Deadmau5’s new album? Let us know in the comments below! When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. His work with the Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Kelly Rowland made him a superstar, so he plans to keep the collabos coming. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News It’s Dance Music Week at MTV News, and we’re bringing you the latest news from the electronic/dance-music world. Lady Gaga, with her RedOne-produced hits like “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance,” has had a lot to do with making club synths mainstream. Of course, there is another trailblazer you should know about. He’s a veteran, but over the past two years, French DJ/producer David Guetta has made impressive strides, turning dance music into pop music. “He’s an incredible DJ, first of all,” Guetta’s “Sexy Chick” collaborator, Akon, recently told MTV News. “Second, he’s an incredible producer.” Dutch electronic-music icon Tiësto told us, “After all of the collaborations, like the Black Eyed Peas did with David Guetta [‘I Gotta Feeling,’ which Guetta produced with Will.I.Am] and Kelly Rowland [‘When Love Takes Over’], I think that woke up the whole scene. Everybody wants to be a part of dance music.” Dance music’s new shining star, 22-year-old Afrojack, told MTV News, “He introduced me to everybody, and I had a great time with Will.I.Am, Kelis and Apl.De.Ap. David is just a really nice guy. He’s not only my friend in the studio, but he’s my friend outside.” Respected by most in music, Guetta has been on a dream run with a series of collaborations (with folks like the Peas, Akon, Estelle, LMFAO , Ne-Yo, and Kid Cudi) that have done as much to make dance music mainstream as they have to turn the DJ/producer into a global superstar. On an average weekend, he spins records for a 100,000 people (like he did at the recent in Miami). “I always felt that our music was underrated,” Guetta told MTV News recently. “I felt that it should be as big as hip-hop and rock. It happened this year with my album One Love. This is still a huge, fantastic, underground scene. But that bridge that I created between electronic Euro culture and American urban culture really made a difference, I think. To finally have dance-music records being played on the radio in America is pretty incredible. “It is, like, really crazy, because I started as a hip-hop DJ, then discovered house music and was pulled into house,” he added. “But also, I never stopped listening to hip-hop at home. It just came back to me. It’s like destiny.” Now that he’s found success merging dance and hip-hop, Guetta plans to keep the collabos coming. “The mix between urban and electronic is really what I’m excited about today, and I want to do that direction for the next album, absolutely,” he said. “Dance music is the next thing for the next 10 years. There’s nothing you can do about it!” When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week.
