‘The Dance Scene’ Shows ‘Music Still Matters,’ Laurieann Gibson Says

Lady Gaga’s creative director tells MTV News why she agreed to do her own reality show. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Laurieann Gibson Photo: MTV News Laurieann Gibson debuted her new E! reality show, “The Dance Scene,” on Sunday night, and the premiere was an inside look at what it’s like to be one of the most sought-after choreographers in the game. Gibson — who is also Lady Gaga’s creative director — is seen working with A-listers Katy Perry and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles as they prepare for VH1’s “Divas Live” in the first episode. Before her E! show, Gibson had made appearances on reality shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” MTV’s “Making the Band” and “Skating With the Stars.” When MTV News caught up with her, Gibson said she was drawn to the idea of having her own reality show because she wanted fans to see that there’s still real artistry in pop music. “I think it’s the only reason why I did the show, was because after being in the music industry for so long and loving music and wanting real artists and real talent to take the forefront as opposed to a premeditated idea of what an artist is based on — a corporate mind-set or a person — that a piece of music or a piece of dance is birthed out of your belly,” she explained. “I want the music to get back into the hands of the people. I wanted them to know that if they watch the show and they see me doubt or fear or fight through adversity or some dream-slayer and they can watch and be inspired that they can make it,” Gibson added. “The music still matters, that the dance still matters, that the gift still matters.” The show goes deep into Gibson’s life and follows her crew of dancers and choreographers, all of whom work from her Boom Kack studios. The dance maven is known for her tough approach, and she thinks the show, which is executive-produced by Ryan Seacrest, will show another side of Gaga’s trusted right-hand lady. “I think they’re gonna be surprised to know the truth to how I’ve gotten where I’ve gotten and what I’ve been through,” Gibson told us. “Because I seem so tough and I am so tough [but] they’re going to see another side of me. I’m still a little girl.” What do you think of Laurieann’s new E! show? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lady Gaga Creative Director Laurieann Gibson

Solange Calls Paps “Dumb And Useless” For Flashing On Her Tribal Turban Steez

Solo was snapped in this snazzy turban and tribal print getup leaving her secret boogie down spot in Hollyweird after partying Thursday night and wasn’t too happy about it. Paps shined their flashing nights at BeyBey’s baby sister as she was walking out of The Frolic Room and she took to Twitter to complain: We’re sure they must have cramped her style. That really blows Solo. Did you put something in the air to get your mind right after that? Cuz you seem to have chilled out by the time fashion blog WhoWhatWear put up said paparazzi shots to jock you and your Chloe Sevigny Opening Ceremony platforms. We’re actually really proud that Solo has Africa on the brain. The younger of the famous Knowles’ sisters joined a group of like-minded artist to record the new song “Kenya” which will benefit the Coca Cola Africa Foundation which campaigns for cleaner water in Africa. Solo’s trill azz big sis has also been inspired by the Motherland as of late. Bey is using African dance elements in the choreography of her next video: Beyoncé is bringing 200 African dancers to Los Angeles today to ensure the dance sequences in her next video are like nothing fans have ever seen. A source close to Beyoncé said the dancers will help Bey incorporate some of their native moves into her “Girl” music video. And as Solange said, Beyonce is definitely on her BOSS ish, when it comes to her career: “She’s interviewed hundreds of people and got a great company together and is doing her own label and some other stuff,” S2S was told. “There’s no ill will between Beyoncé and her father. She just wants to have her own empire and Jay-Z has nothing to do with her management,” the source said. “It’s about her evolution as a woman.” Sounds about right. The pressure has got to be on with this “groundbreaking” album that’s coming this June. SplashNews/FamePictures

‘Arthur’: The Reviews Are In!

Russell Brand’s remake is ‘a sporadically charming riff,’ critics say. By Eric Ditzian Russell Brand in “Arthur” Photo: Warner Bros. In the summer of 1981, legendary New York Times film critic Vincent Canby called “Arthur” a “terrifically engaging, high-spirited screwball comedy.” The movie would go on to become the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year and nab four Oscar nominations, including one for its star, Dudley Moore. Russell Brand’s 2011 remake of the classic comedy is neither attracting the critical plaudits nor anticipating the boffo box office performance and awards season love of its predecessor. Which is not to say critics have found nothing to celebrate in this new “Arthur.” Most reviewers have responded positively to Brand’s performance. What they take issue with is the deviations the new movie has taken from the original — not so much in a storytelling sense, but in thematic and comedic ones. For those critiques and more, read on for what the pros are saying about “Arthur.” The Story “Brand’s character, Arthur Bach, is heir to a billion-dollar fortune who spends his days and nights drinking, dressing up as Batman, carousing through New York, and generally living the high life. In all things he is supervised by Hobson (Helen Mirren), his nanny since childhood and surrogate mother. His actual mother, Vivienne (Geraldine James), disapproves of his nonsense and threatens to cut him off from the money if he won’t marry Susan Johnson (Jennifer Garner), who comes from a wealthy family and can reassure investors that the Bach empire is in good hands. This is, in Arthur’s words, ‘a macabre conspiracy to inveigle me into a loveless marriage’ — a good example of the eloquently humorous turns of phrase at which the film occasionally excels.” — Eric D. Snider, Film.com The Comparison, Part I “Arthur, of course, is supposed to be selfish, but Dudley Moore, in the 1981 version, showed you the twinkle of innocence that Arthur’s drunkenness covered up. Even sloshed, he kept surprising himself. Moore was a happy rascal. Brand is more like a reptile who plays at being innocent. His Arthur goes to AA (an all-too- inevitable joke), but it almost doesn’t matter if he’s drunk or not, since Russell Brand always seems to be drunk … on his one-note joy-buzzer brain. If he really wants to be a star, he may need the actor’s version of an intervention, something to stand between his talent and what looks like his relentless self-love.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Comparison, Part II “Much of the humor in the original, more screwball ‘Arthur’ doesn’t hold up well, but the subtler, sweeter laughs in the remake feel timeless … Although the stories are essentially the same, the new ‘Arthur’ feels like a much different movie than the original, which didn’t care about any of the people who were sober. This one helps us understand where several of its characters are coming from, why they’re together and what’s funny about them. So, even if you go in with some skepticism, I bet you’ll leave convinced it was worth doing.” — Chris Hewitt, Minneapolis Pioneer Press The Laughs “But that cast is precisely what makes the new ‘Arthur’ so frustrating. The actors are good enough to wring occasional laughs out of remarkably slight material — every fifth seemingly improvised line that comes out of Brand’s mouth is funny in the same verbose way his stand-up is funny, and there’s a sweet mini-movie in his co-dependent relationship with Mirren’s character. But they’re fighting a tired story full of pratfalls, barn-broad gags, cartoonish stuffed shirts and the exact same story beats you’ve seen in a million rom-coms, right down to the wedding-aisle confrontation.” — Mike Russell, The Oregonian The Final Word “Is a sporadically charming riff on such a familiar property enough to give Russell Brand and Greta Gerwig the bumps that it feels like the industry wants for them? They’ve both been tapped, but they haven’t really had an organic moment where something they were in went from hit to phenomenon. And it feels like Hollywood wants to give them that moment. But this sort of innocuous remake, amiable and ultimately sort of dull, probably isn’t how it’s going to happen. Dudley Moore had a real moment with the original, and this is just a karaoke version. Brand and Gerwig deserve something better than this, something more uniquely suited to their undeniable appeal.” — Drew McWeeny, HitFix.com Check out everything we’ve got on “Arthur.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Laurieann Gibson Says ‘The Dance Scene’ Is Not Just A Dance Show

Lady Gaga’s creative director says her E! series shows ‘the evolution of a dream.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Laurieann Gibson Photo: MTV News Laurieann Gibson is a creative director and choreographer whose client list includes names like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Natalia Kills, Nicki Minaj, Diddy (and Dirty Money), Alicia Keys and Keri Hilson, to name only a few. She’s already had a movie based on her life (Jessica Alba played a Laurieann-like character in “Honey”) and appeared on various TV shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Making the Band,” “Skating With the Stars.” And, of course, she was a Fly Girl alongside J.Lo on “In Living Color.” What’s left on her to-do list? Well, next she’ll be providing a peek into the world of dancing on her new E! show, “The Dance Scene,” which premieres Sunday at 10:30 p.m. ET. ” ‘The Dance Scene’ is basically the most amazing dance show in the world,” she humbly told MTV News. “And it follows me as a creative director. You see how I maintain that creativity.” The show follows Laurieann and her team of dancers and choreographers at Boom Kack studios as they audition, rehearse, choreograph and perform visuals for major events, such as “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” and music videos. It also gives an inside look at the personal lives of the dancers and their ever-present struggle to balance work and life while living up to Gibson’s very high expectations. With her high-profile clients and a truly competitive spirit, Gibson said she really wasn’t nervous about having the cameras following her around for the show. “I wasn’t hesitant because I’m built out of a truthful place,” she said. “The only thing that I have is the truth, so the only thing I fear is a lie. I wasn’t afraid of being truthful, and I just want them to know how great they can be, and I wanted to lift the veil.” So, what should we expect from the show’s first episode? “Sunday’s premiere is quite exciting,” Gibson teased. “I saw the premiere, and I cried. I cried ’cause I was so grateful that [executive producer] Ryan [Seacrest] was not afraid to show me in all of a positive … all of the power that my gift has, and no one’s ever been brave enough to be like, ‘Yes, you are capable.’ And he just let it be, so I just cried. “And we’re at the opening of ‘Divas Live’ with four divas [including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Keri Hilson],” she continued. “It’s just everything that’s going to happen on this season: It’s power packed; it’s an incredible show. It’s not just another corny dance show. It isn’t. It’s not even really a dance show. It’s the life of a dancer and the transition and the evolution of a dream.”

DJ Pete Tong Celebrates 20 Years Of Dance Music On BBC Radio 1

DJ talks to MTV News about the rise of dance music in the U.S. and beyond. By Adam Stewart Pete Tong Photo: MTV News It is nearly impossible to picture the dance music landscape without the finely tuned ear, and of course, the iconic voice of the legendary Pete Tong. After over 1900 broadcasts, the DJ kicks off his 20th anniversary celebration on BBC Radio 1 on Friday (at 3 p.m. ET), rolling out the Top 20 tracks of the past two decades, as voted on by his listeners. After DJ’ing at various smaller stations in his early years, Tong burst onto BBC Radio 1 in 1991 with his weekly “Essential Mix” broadcast — which has since become the Holy Grail of dance music aficionados across the globe. Tong admits, however, that it was a touch of luck that put him in the chair as one of the most influential names in dance music. “It was a little bit of being in the right place at the right time,” Tong told MTV News recently while in Miami, where he again hosted his massive Radio 1 Pool Party at the Surfcomber. Unlike corporate American radio, British DJs have more freedom to play what they see fit; they are the eyes and ears of the culture burgeoning around them, and are tasked with bringing the next big sound out in to the open. This in turn gives underground talent a chance to flourish and be exposed to the dance music audience that has grown massive since its beginnings in the late 1980s. “They didn’t have anyone to speak to the biggest youth culture movement since punk rock,” he explained. “I landed on my feet at Radio 1 in ’91, with a big audience ready to go, and we were off and running.” Now, to be featured on Pete Tong’s weekly radio show, broadcast/streamed to millions around the world, is truly an anointment of success. You don’t go anywhere without Pete’s blessing, and his influence has even helped usher in a new age of dance music here in the States. But he’s also ready to credit others with the genre’s recent growth. “You’ve got to celebrate the acknowledgement and success and all of the doors that have been opened by someone like David Guetta; it just makes the whole scene bigger,” Tong said. “But like any scene, not everybody in it is going to like the same thing. And for the extreme right wing, there’s always going to be a left-wing reaction. What I think is most positive is for all the excitement and headlines that have been generated by David Guetta’s collaborations with the likes of will.i.am. “I’ve been around a long time, and I’ve seen America flirt with dance music before, back in the days when the Prodigy had broken out and it was straight on to Lollapalooza,” Tong observed. “Everyone was getting really, really excited, [but] the thing about that is everyone got excited on a festival level, and it never really leaked down into the roots of society, whereas it definitely has more of a hold now.” Tong said one difference now is that pop and hip-hop artists are incorporating dance music in their work. “[M]ost VIP rooms were playing hip-hop across the country a few years ago, and now everyone wants to book electronic acts and dance music acts,” he said. “I can only commend people like David [Guetta] for knocking that brick wall down, and everyone runs in behind him, and it will be like the tower of Babel: Everyone’s going to be speaking a different language, which can only be a good thing!” Tong will embrace this movement when he releases a trio of new mix albums over the next several months. First up is a Future Underground mix with Riva Starr, due out April 11. Then he’ll release a summer mix to complement his new Friday night “All Gone Pete Tong” residency at Pacha Ibiza, after which he’s dropping his first ever studio Essential Mix, slated for August 8. In the meantime, we’ll hear his new single, “Dawn” (working title), an epic piano anthem he teased while in Miami last month.

‘I had a chance to make something beautiful with this film,’ Oscar winner says. Mariah Carey Poses Topless, Pregnant For Life & Style

‘I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to document this once-in-a-lifetime experience,’ pop diva says of the magazine photo shoot. By James Dinh Mariah Carey on the cover of Life & Style magazine Photo: Life & Style Like quite a few celebrities-turned-mothers before her, Mariah Carey has shed her clothes at the height of her pregnancy for an intimate photo shoot. For the new issue of Life & Style magazine, which hits newsstands on Friday, the powerhouse diva offers some candid belly-baring images and opens up about her journey to motherhood. “I was feeling very vulnerable about taking pictures at all right now, but then I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to document this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” the 42-year-old songbird told the mag. “My ultimate goal was to share this incredibly personal moment with my true fans.” On the cover, Carey poses with one arm high and the other across her very pregnant belly while her golden-blonde hair flows over her chest. Meanwhile, the singer apparently wasn’t the only one excited about the intimate photo shoot. Carey, who is pregnant with twins (a boy and a girl), revealed, “The babies were kicking almost the entire time; it was unbelievable. Especially the girl — clearly she’s a diva in training!” While the babies aren’t due for another few weeks, Carey and husband Nick Cannon were alerted just last week when contractions sent the singer to the hospital. She explained to Life & Style that her photo shoot was delayed due to their impromptu trip, saying, “We didn’t start shooting until 1:30 a.m. because I was in the hospital from the night before until the day of the shoot with contractions five minutes apart!” As her due date looms closer, Carey admitted that pregnancy has enlightened her to a brand-new perspective on motherhood. “Now I have so much respect for mothers everywhere, especially those who’ve had difficult pregnancies or given birth to multiples,” she said, adding, “We need to have Mother’s Day once a week!” Soon-to-be-father Cannon is also basking in the thrill of his twins’ impending arrival, telling the magazine that he thought he “couldn’t love Mariah more,” but admitting that he now has “a whole new appreciation and admiration for her.” Send your well-wishes to Mariah and Nick in the comments!
