Mirren appeals for more female filmmakers at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Andie MacDowell and daughter join a project, and Paramount is pursuing a U.S. version of Inbetweeners . Not too many, I’m sure,” she said during a speech in which she paid tribute to the film-maker Nora Ephron, who died last week. “When I was making films [early in my career] there were very, very few female directors, and there were certainly no women on set, which made taking one’s clothes off all the more difficult…Things have moved on, but as far as I’m concerned, they haven’t moved on enough,” The Guardian reports . Andie MacDowell and Daughter Tie Up for Mother’s Day Andie MacDowell and Rainey Qualley have joined the cast of Mother’s Day , joining previously announced cast members Susan Sarandon, her daughter Eva Amurri Martino and Christina Ricci in the indie drama. Studios & Teamsters, Other Crafts Unions Reach Tentative Agreement The three tentative agreements include a 2 percent annual wage increase and additional funding of union health plans, THR reports .
Tom Cruise is reportedly gearing up for a fight. Having been blindsided last week by his spouse, he is ready for a custody battle over Suri Cruise and preparing to counter-file for divorce in California. According to celebrity gossip sources, Cruise wants to ensure that Katie doesn’t get sole custody of Suri, which she asked for in her New York filing. Cruise’s camp says the divorce can only take place in New York if the marriage occurred there or the spouse has been living there continuously. Despite the couple owning an N.Y. apartment deeded in her name, he will argue that both live in L.A. and she doesn’t meet N.Y. residency requirements . This is significant as N.Y. courts are perceived as much more likely to award sole custody in a contentious divorce than their California counterparts. An insider added of Cruise’s game plan: “There is absolutely no way that he is going to let Katie have sole custody. The lines are being drawn.” The somewhat surprising Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce came out of nowhere, allegedly prompted by her fear of Scientology groups corrupting Suri. The Church of Scientology has denied reports suggesting its people are tailing Katie Holmes or that she is under surveillance, as has been rumored. Regardless, it wasn’t a shock to many when she filed for divorce that it was Cruise’s controversial religion at the crux of the couple’s marital problems. “Every move she made and everything she did was controlled … She felt like she was in Rosemary’s Baby ,” says one insider, referring to the 1968 film. Indeed, her decision to leave the movie star wasn’t easy, nor was it simply about the 33-year-old’s own personal contentment, a Holmes source says. “This is about protecting her daughter,” the insider explains. “She wants to be in charge of how Suri is being raised and didn’t want her to have an exclusively Scientology education. She felt she had to get out to save her daughter.”
The impending Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce apparently has the actress feeling uneasy and convinced the Church of Scientology now views her as a threat. As such, Holmes believes the church put a team on her tail . Katie reportedly believes that in recent weeks, as discord between herself and Tom grew and they began living apart – even while both were in New York City in mid-June – Scientology higher-ups have been following her every move. It’s unclear if this is in fact the case, but Scientology has been linked to such activity for years, and sources say “mysterious” men have photographed Katie when she’s out, with vehicles spotted near her apartment around the clock. A white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV have been outside her place for the past week. Again, it’s unclear who, if anyone, is tailing Katie Holmes. The actress filed for sole custody of Suri in New York last week, a move Tom allegedly had no idea was coming. His ties to Scientology are said to be a big reason. It’s unclear what “threat” Katie would pose. She’s given no indication of trying to expose anything or portray it negatively; she likely just wants to shield her daughter from the controversial religion and be done with it. New York courts are more inclined than those in California to award sole legal custody to one parent or the other when there is conflict. She has been setting up residence there in recent weeks, preparing for the move. If she is being stalked by Scientologists, that would certainly bolster her case in court. Katie, 33, wed Tom, 49, in 2006, a few months after Suri was born. Jada Pinkett Smith is speaking out against the horror of human trafficking, a noble cause brought to her attention by none other than her daughter, Willow. Jada started the organization Don’t Sell Bodies after Willow Smith, 11, approached her after watching Kony 2012 and being blown away by its story. Pinkett Smith thus teamed up with actress Salma Hayek to get the attention of the masses. Hayek directed the video below, in which Jada bares all: Wicked Evolution – Nada Se Compara No question Jada Pinkett Smith nude will get people to pay attention to anything. Might as well use it for an important cause. Kudos to her. Men in Black 3 star Will has been super supportive, she says: “He’s amazing because he wants to lend support in every way. In order to combat this, we need our men. We need our soldiers. Let me tell you, I love girl power, but ain’t nothin’ like having some muscle behind you! Will’s got some big ones!” Motivating and inspiring, to say the least. There was talk, back a week or so ago, about the perfect Father’s Day movie. Some made jokes about That’s My Boy , others took the opportunity to reassert the paternal themes across the work of Wes Anderson, including his latest, Moonrise Kingdom . I couldn’t help thinking, watching Beasts of the Southern Wild , a dreamy, boisterous, folk-inflected allegory of American independence and its foes, among other things, that for a certain type of father and daughter, at least, the story of a benevolent universe-ruler named Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) and her willful dad Wink (Dwight Henry) would unleash the floodgates like no other. If you’ve ever attempted to prepare for your own death at your father’s hands by leaving a record for the future excavators of history, you might agree. But then Hushpuppy’s circumstances are so unique that they could only be hers; Hushpuppy’s world is the world. The success of this exuberant, affecting debut feature from director Benh Zeitlin depends on his ability to universalize the particular, in this case by drawing us into the perspective of a six-year-old girl living in squalor and feeling and uncertainty in the Louisiana bayou, then telling our own story from behind it. That story is rich enough to accommodate a number of thematic inscriptions, including American class and ideological disparities, moral philosophies of prosperity and independence, environmental imbalance and Katrina-esque catastrophe, and, perhaps most indelible, reckoning with our inevitable visit from the goon squad. Though she scrawls a cave-drawing version of her own imminent fate (death by very, very angry dad) after setting her trailer ablaze in a fit of don’t-ignore-me pique, Beasts details young Hushpuppy’s confrontation with her father’s mortality. Like Where the Wild Things Are ’s Max (more specifically in Spike Jonze’s adaptation), she has a single parent, in this case an unstable and ailing man trying to instill self-sufficiency in his daughter before his time runs out. What Hushpuppy sees, variously and with a level, absorbent gaze, is a bully, a crank, a king, a madman, a playmate, and a scary dad. Like everything else, she imagines his illness as her doing, and assumes that when he goes he will take the world with him. Both Wallis and Henry are non-professionals plucked from the local environs, each personifying — along with a supporting cast of outsiders and eccentrics —the toughness of spirit that keeps their characters at the center of a very specific universe, come what storms and tusked beasts may. Beasts was shot on location, though its marshy, water-veined bayou setting is more of a frame for the starkly imagined habitat of Hushpuppy and her father. They live among the animals; sometimes they eat with them, sometimes they eat them. In the earthy, ethereal opening sequence, Hushpuppy searches for the heartbeat of various creatures, holding some up to her ear like a seashell, piecing together a collective rhythm. For her heartbeats have a soothing effect; others have their own ideas. The sailor Hushpuppy meets on the water, after she and a coterie of dirty-limbed girls attempt to swim out to the light believed to be her mother, says it’s the smell of chicken biscuits that makes him feel “cohesive.” At times it feels like not much holds this world together; at others it seems nothing could possibly tear it apart. Zeitlin and cinematographer Ben Richardson create a sense of coherent near-chaos with constant, searching camerawork. They shoot from the hip, literally — life as seen from a little person’s point of view — with the wobbly, watchful intensity of a young girl just getting her sea legs. At the same time that we see the world as Hushpuppy does, we take in the tenuousness of her existence with apprehension. At first the romantically appointed poverty and dissipation may set off a certain wariness; the marshalling of filth and decay as the authentic counterpoint to sleek, self-alienated lives. And indeed, the group’s violent evacuation to a shelter following a storm’s devastating flood feels too easy, a false note in an otherwise nuanced and persuasive evocation of stubborn iconoclasm. That Hushpuppy’s perspective eventually swallows and uplifts the movie is the happy result of an uncommonly sensitive screenplay (adapted from Lucy Alibar’s play Juicy and Delicious by Alibar and Zeitlin) and the staging of a climax whose transcendence removes all doubt that we are in the hands of a confident, exceptionally lyrical filmmaker. Wink calls his daughter the king and the boss lady, commands her to eat crab like a beast, admonishes her when she jumps from a catfish’s sting, and drills into her the idea that she should never, ever cry. The latter feels like a nod to Beasts ’s own vulnerability to sentiment. Instead, with the help of a tough-bodied little girl too fantastically of the earth to fall prey to the preternatural, it strikes upon actual, unforgettable emotion. Playing dress-up takes on new meaning when your mom is Madonna. Her eldest child Lourdes Leon, 15, had some fun backstage at mom’s MDNA tour wearing the Material Girl’s cone bra! Lourdes and Madonna’s Material Girl clothing line tweeted a photo of “Lola backstage at MDNA!” Wednesday. Check out mother and daughter in the infamous garb: While Lourdes is well on her way toward adulthood, and the above photo is harmless, the singer has expressed concerned that she’s growing up too fast. Lola was recently seen in some revealing bikini photos , and more scandalously, was also caught puffing on a cigarette in the streets of New York City. “Cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of, for anyone. I don’t approve of anyone smoking cigarettes, most of all my daughter,” Madonna told NBC. What do you think of the cone bra pic? Too much?
Lamar Odom And Khloe Kardashian-Odom Accused Of Attending Daughter’s Graduation For Publicity But Skipping Son’s Because The Paparazzi Wasn’t There Despite the reality TV shows and sour grapes about being traded from the Lakers, we’d never think Lamar Odom would ever resort to such publicity pandering tactics as what he’s been accused of as of late. Word on the street is, Lammy only likes to play Daddy when the cameras are rolling… Via Gatecrasher : You’ve heard of deadbeat dads? Lamar Odom is a photo-op father. Lower Manhattan public school parents are shaking their heads over the stunt the NBA free agent and his wife Khloe Kardashian pulled when Odom’s daughter and son graduated from their respective public schools last week. On Wednesday, Odom’s 13-year-old daughter Destiny graduated from I.S. 289 in Battery Park City. A source familiar with the situation tells us that although the girl’s mother, Liza Morales — who was engaged to Odom from 2000 to approximately 2008 but never married him— initially invited Kardashian to the school ceremony, she had to rescind the offer when, a few weeks before the big day, the school limited tickets to three per family. That left a ticket for Odom, Morales and Destiny’s grandmother — but not Kardashian. For some reason, the source says, Khloe was determined to attend, and the source claims, in the days leading up to the graduation, Odom and Kardashian’s camp lobbied the school for an extra ticket. “The school held its ground,” says our source. “But, on the day of the graduation, Khloe showed up anyway and they let her inside.” This was after the couple was photographed walking hand-in-hand to the graduation ceremony. Photos of the couple with Destiny at the graduation ceremony can also be found on the Internet. “It is going to be a HOT day in NYC today!” Kardashian tweeted on Wednesday. “Lamar and I are excited though!!! It’s graduation day for his babies!!!” Well, not exactly. Our source says that Odom’s 10-year-old son L.J. graduated from the same school’s fifth grade on Thursday. “What was sad was that after bringing Khloe uninvited to his daughter’s graduation, he didn’t even show up for his son,” says the source. “They got their photo-op the day before and then he couldn’t be bothered. It was beyond hurtful,” says the insider. Other parents “couldn’t believe it.” Jill Fritzo, a spokeswoman for Kardashian and Odom, insists that the ballplayer did attend his son’s graduation “with Rob Kardashian,” but L.J.’s uncle says otherwise. “I was there and sitting in the back. Lamar was not there,” says Liza’s brother, Nathan Morales. He adds that L.J. “was a little disappointed but ultimately he was okay because he spent his time with his friends and his mother.” Asked if he could offer any explanation for Odom’s absence from his son’s milestone, Nathan said: “Because there were no paparazzi there.” Although Kardashian reportedly headed back to Los Angeles after Destiny’s graduation, Odom stayed in town. The 6-foot-3 player partied at Catch Roof on Saturday night. We hope he toasted his son. Dang, would you ever think Khloe and Lamar would do something this lowdown and dirty? We don’t know about this one. Do you believe it, or is there some good explanation for this? Hit the flip for more photos of the couple at Destiny’s graduation.

Friendship bracelets, Pussycat dolls, Costa Rica, engagement rings, and cake-eating party crashers . This season of The Real Housewives of Orange County has had it all. Tonight, on the season finale, notes are compared and confrontations are had. Find out how it all goes down with our THG +/- review! Sarah’s still being a ball of drunken crazy about being picked on for breaking the cake. Over her. Minus 3. In two signs of the Apocalypse, Terry calls Brooks “a really nice guy” ( Minus 4 ) and Tamra decides to eat carbs ( Plus 4 ). To commemorate their five months of being friends, and as a tit-for-tat from the first episode , Gretchen gives Tamra a friendship bracelet. Each charm represents something special, but one heart represents how Tamra’s unbreakable. Tamra tells Gretchen she loves her and thanks her for being such a good friend. And then she cries again. While Tamra needs to lay off the booze tonight, it’s a nice moment for these ladies. Plus 10 . Sarah’s still whining about the cake and has the audacity to call Heather the rude one. Heather calls for the “heavy artillery”–a bunch of ladies in cocktail dresses and Terry–and says it’s time for Sarah to go. Plus 3. Alexis tries to get louder than everyone else to bring about a resolution and Slade speaks up as the voice of reason. There’s no need for a resolution. There’s a need for Sarah to leave because that’s what’s been asked of her. As they get Sarah to the door, the greatest line in all of reality television ever, or maybe just this season, falls out of Sarah’s mouth–“Is this the world we live in? Over a bleeping piece of tiny cake?” Yes, Sarah. Yes it is. Buh-bye. Plus 10. The party’s still rocking at Chateau Dubrow, and Vicki decides it’s time to “apologize” to Ryan for bringing him up in her fight with Briana. But in Vickiwood, apologize means “talk about yourself and make things all about how everyone else is wrong.” Minus 17. She thinks Ryan will help her get Briana back, but Ryan says this is really Vicki’s problem. Then she says “I love you. I don’t know you and you took my daughter away, but I love you.” Uh, thanks? Ryan loves you too? Minus 8. Alexis is rambling on to Brooks about how Jim isn’t there because he didn’t want to be there. And who sneaks in the door but Jim! Heather’s Drama-Senses are tingling and Alexis is chipper over Jim’s arrival. WAY chipper. Way more than just one cocktail chipper. Minus 11. Terry comments to a guest that Jim “grew a pair and showed up” right before he does the man-hug-handshake thing that men do. In Camp Gunvalson, Jeana’s daughter Kara sees Slade hug Tamra and is confused. Gretchen applies Tamra’s lipgloss (by kissing her) and Vicki goes traipsing across the yard. She thinks Tamra and Gretchen’s friendship is fake and calls Tamra a brown-noser. Let it go, Vicki. Gretchen’s just more fun than you. Minus 7. Slade offers up hsi services as bouncer again should Terry need them. He’s prepared to send Jim packing if he needs to. Terry asks if they’re okay and Jim says they’ll talk next week. Alexis says they should just talk now and in a complete douchebag move, Jim asks “really? Are you wearing the pants?” Minus 50. I just can’t stand this man. Jim and Terry go talk and Terry’s straight up with Jim. He thinks Alexis is phony and inauthentic. Plus 5 . Heather walks up and Jim nods in her direction and says this is the reason he wanted to talk next week. Jim’s got a problem with the women-folk. But, the talk continues. Until Tamra walks up. Then Jim’s out. Minus 10 , Tamra. This wasn’t your conversation to have. Alexis says Heather shouldn’t have even been in the conversation and it should’ve just been Jim and Terry, man-to-man. Actually, sweetheart, it should’ve been YOU and Terry because Terry talked about you. But whatever. Alexis goes out to talk to Jim and Jim’s pulling out of the driveway without her. She practically has to chase him down the driveway to get him to stop the car. Minus 12 . The gang’s all at the table now. And the booze is flowing. Vicki toasts to the absent Alexis and Tamra rolls her eyes. Brooks challenges her, saying she gave Vicki the “Evil Eye,” and picks a fight with Tamra on Vicki’s behalf. Gretchen says a fight’s been brewing between the two of them for months. Tamra and Brooks start to argue and then Vicki tells Eddie to get control of Tamra, which causes Tamra to tell Vicki to stop letting Brooks tell her what to think, which makes Vicki stand up and get in Tamra’s face. Can we cut the cake already? Maybe these ladies need some sugar. Vicki and Brooks prepare to leave and Tamra follows them to find out why they’re leaving. Vicki shouts that Tamra’s supposed to be her friend and how dare Tamra talk about Brooks and disrespect him and blah blah blah. Get a grip, Vicki. Tamra goes to find Briana after Vicki and Brooks leave and they compare notes. Neither of them like Brooks. Tamra’s crying. Briana’s ready to stick Brooks on a plane to Siberia. Ryan goes back into the house to get Briana away from Tamra so that Tamra can’t corrupt Briana while she and Vicki are “in a healing phase.” Minus 4. Heather goes out to get Vicki and Brooks and bring them back in for her special toast. Briana asks Vicki for Vicki’s side of the story. Suddenly, it seems Vicki saw Tamra roll her eyes and she chooses Brooks over her daughter. They all head back into the party for the final toast. Minus 12. Finally, we’re cutting this damn cake. Heather explains why they’re all there–shockingly, it wasn’t for the drama–she’s changed her name legally and wants to thank her friends, new and old, for coming out to support her. Heather’s classy. I like her. Plus 30. In the worst Vicki moment so far, she muscles her way into the circle to say, basically, “Congrats Heather. When I’m attacked, I fight back and I’m leaving and I’m choosing my man.” I’m surprised she didn’t drop a “my love tank is full” for good measure. Minus 20. Heather’s big surprise of the night–diamonds in the champagne glasses–goes over well. Tamra gets the lucky flute. Now she’s got a new rock to match the one Eddie gave her in Bora Bora. Closing notes: Tamra asks Heather to do shots. Not a good idea, Tamra. Heather says they don’t do shots. Tamra calls her Fancypants. In love, of course. Heather’s still opening up a restaurant. Eddie asks Ryan, Tamra’s son, to be his best man when Eddie and Tamra tie the knot. Tamra needs another drink. Briana says that she and Vicki’s relationship will really continue to suffer as long as Vicki keeps choosing Brooks. Briana and Ryan had a wedding for their friends and family. Briana’s also 6 months pregnant. Tamra and Gretchen are closer than Gretchen and Alexis.
