Arizona Girl Given Fake Award For Best Homework Excuses; Mom Says Teacher "Humiliated" Her

The mother of an 8-year-old girl presented with a “Catastrophe Award” for the best/most excuses for not doing homework believes her child was humiliated by her teacher. Christina Valdez said her daughter, Cassandra Garcia, came home one day from class at Desert Springs Academy in Tucson, Ariz., with the paper award. The document, which looks like a colorful card, says: “You’re Tops! Catastrophe Award . Awarded to Cassandra Garcia. For Most Excuses for Not Having Homework!” The teacher signed and dated the card, which included a smiley face. Eight-Year-Old Wins ‘Catastrophe Award’ The teacher announced the award in front of Garcia’s entire third grade class, while other students laughed at her daughter, Valdez told KGUN-TV in Tucson. When she called to complain, the principal “blew me off,” Valdez added. “She said it was a joke that was played and that the teachers joke around with the children.” Valdez told KGUN that she didn’t find any of it funny. “I think it’s cruel and no child should be given an award like this. It’s disturbing,” she said, adding that she was unaware of any problem with homework.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Gets Exorcised On Season Premiere

Season nine gets off to a unique start during the first round of auditions in New York and Texas. By Natasha Chandel Hampton Williams on “So You Think You Can Dance” Photo: Fox “So You Think You Can Dance” is back and kicking — literally. Limbs flew left, right, center and even behind the head, as season nine of the dance competition premiered Thursday night (May 24) with the first round of auditions in New York and Texas. Dancers from all over the world auditioned for a golden ticket to Sin City, showcasing a dynamic range of artists, styles and emotional stories. Both cities delivered a plethora of highly skilled, highly entertaining and highly ridiculous talent. The highlight of the first auditions was not the usual crowd-pleasing contemporary and hip-hop styles, but rather, unique and inventive forms of dance, including animation, lyrical freestyle and … exorcism? Standouts Chehon Wespi-Tschopp from Switzerland dazzled the judges with a stoic contemporary routine showing off his immense strength and a chiseled body that judge Mary Murphy made sure to squeeze extra hard as Wespi-Tschopp came over to graciously hug the panel for his Vegas pass. But the real standout of the night, by far, was Texan Hampton Williams, creator of his own style of dance titled “exorcist style.” The grimly angelic performance saw Williams pop and lock every single muscle in his body, like never before seen on the show. He brought not only Murphy to tears, but many members of the audience as well, and received a unanimous standing ovation through the theater. “I think you could be a genius,” judge Nigel Lythgoe told the young man before offering to pay for Williams’ Vegas ticket himself if the other judges did not put him through. Gut Wrenchers Being the soulful art form that dance is, “SYTYCD” is notorious for exposing its contestants’ gut-wrenching tales of adversity, and tonight’s premiere was full of such stories. Whether it was Jarell Rochelle’s need to succeed before his mother went blind to Sam Shefler’s battle with autism, the uniting factor was simple: a love for dance. Although Shefler did not move forward with his lyrical freestyle, he received a standing ovation for his courage and was advised never to stop dancing. Feel-Good Moments Mother of two Bree Hafen, from Texas, won the judges’ hearts and had her golden ticket delivered by her young son. The real kicker came when her daughter, also an aspiring dancer, chimed “my turn” after her mom performed a remarkably fluid contemporary routine. She immediately went into a relev

Bristol Palin Reality Show Hyped With Unintentionally Hilarious Bio

“Bristol Palin is the daughter of Sarah Palin. She got pregnant by accident just as her mom was added to the 2008 Republican ticket, at which point she pretended to be engaged to Levi Johnston, then attempted to cash in on her 15 minutes.” Lifetime’s press release for Bristol Palin’s new reality show COULD say that, and it wouldn’t be incorrect, but alas, their bio is a bit different. Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp (get it?!) premieres on June 19 with two (!) episodes. Here’s Lifetime’s explanation of why you should watch it: “Viewers will get the chance to experience the life of one of America’s most famous young mothers, Bristol Palin, in the new docuseries … showcasing Bristol’s journey growing into womanhood with her young son, Tripp.” “With never-before-granted access to Bristol’s real-life experiences, the show follows her everyday life as a single mother living under intense media scrutiny that comes from her lineage as the daughter of former Alaska Governor and V.P. candidate Sarah Palin .” “The series follows Bristol’s move from Wasilla to Los Angeles with Tripp and her sister Willow, and back to Alaska as she deals with parenting and disciplining her toddler without Tripp’s father.” “Giving viewers a unique look at the difficult decisions she makes for relationships, career and family, Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp will capture how true-to-life challenges test her resolve as she single-handedly writes the next chapter in her and Tripp’s life.” “The former first daughter of Alaska, Bristol has become one of the country’s most high-profile teen mothers after the 2008 birth of Tripp.” “She has since dedicated her life to being a leading advocate for the prevention of teen pregnancy, working with such organizations as the Candie’s Foundation to educate people about the issue.” “In 2010, Bristol appeared on ABC’s hit reality competition series Dancing with the Stars , on which she placed in third. Most recently, she published her New York Times best-selling book, Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far , which candidly chronicles her public and personal life.” “Bristol also launched her own blog , where readers can get her views and opinions on various topics such as politics, pop culture and parenting.” Eh, our bio is still better. There’s something to be said for brevity. Will you watch Bristol Palin’s new show? [Photo: WENN.com]

Jillian Michaels Welcomes Son AND Adopted Daughter!

The Biggest Loser host Jillian Michaels is doling out unconditional, rather than tough love to a two-year-old daughter, Lukensia – whom she recently brought home from Haiti after a long and arduous adoption process. She also welcomed a son , Phoenix, that partner Heidi Rhoades gave birth to May 3! “We’re swimming in babies over here,” Michaels, 38, told People of her new life. The two-year journey that led her to her daughter ended with an incredible twist of fate as Rhoades, 31, delivered their son the same week Lukensia arrived. The instant family makes for long days and nights for Michaels. But the fitness fanatic insists that despite the hardship, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I don’t even answer email anymore. I don’t have time to care about anything else,” she notes. “I want to be really present and enjoy all the nuances of their growth and development. I don’t want to rush any of it.” Congratulations to the whole, growing family! [Photo: WENN.com]

Dirty Dog Domestic Drama: Pilar Sanders Says Deion Has Publicly “Put Hands” On Her On More Than One Occasion

Pilar Sanders Speaks On Deion Sanders Divorce And Domestic Abuse Tanya Young Williams (yes from BBWs and Jayson Williams) interviewed Pilar Sanders on her troubled marriage with Deion Sanders . Despite Prime Time’s denial of any physical/domestic abuse, Pilar says otherwise… Q: You’ve stated that Deion has abused you in the past. In what ways? A: Many ways. Financially it started before Christmas and continues until today. He just stopped providing for the family. He cut credit cards. He cut financial support … No resources at all, whatsoever. Even when we’re still in the house, my daughter would beg for clothes, he wouldn’t buy her any clothes. It would come to a point where she would say, dad will you get me a sandwich from Subway and he would be like, no – that’s a five dollar sandwich. He would tell her go ask your mommy. What he would try to do was use every piece of leverage he could ever get a hold of and try to use against me and try to turn the children against me. So what he was telling the kids was that basically, if you stay with me I can provide for you, your mother doesn’t have money, you’re not going to be able to get clothes, you wont be able to get food, who knows what type of place you will be at, but here, you will have everything you need and want. Q: Has there been physical abuse from him in the past? A: Yes, there has on more than one occasion. And he’s done it in front of people. He did it in front of two of our producers on our show, Primetime Love … It’s so idiotic and its funny and its not funny. During the shooting of it, I have a very light personality, with that, there were a lot of parts that were just naturally funny and it just kinda happened. So he called shooting down and he called a meeting with myself and two producers from Los Angeles and we went to our back room where the sitting area is – he said “there has to be a good cop and a bad cop and there is only one comedian here and the comedian is me.” I just started laughing and said, “Oh my God you are ridiculous” and I say, “I can’t help it if I’m funnier than you”. Then he leaped across the table and grabbed my neck and squeezed it to the point that I thought that he poked a hole in my trachea. The two producers didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t get him off of me. They couldn’t do anything so I started kicking him in his groin. That’s the only thing that got him off of me … There were other times when he grabbed me and ripped jewelry … When he was verbally abusive, I didn’t recognize it as abuse. I took his nasty behavior as his personality, I just thought he was a really mean jerk. He was just rude to people because he’s rude to a lot more people than me. More on the divorce and his alleged 19-year-old jumpoff…

Get Well: Georgia Woman Battling Flesh Eating Bacteria Bravely Faces More Amputations

Our prayers are with this young lady. The woman in Georgia who has been battling a flesh eating bacteria deserves kudos for her bravery after learning she’ll have to have her hands and remaining foot amputated. According to RadarOnline reports : The Georgia girl whose body is being ravaged by a flesh-eating bacteria bravely gave the OK when her parents broke the news to her that she would have to lose her hands and right foot. Aimee Copeland, 24, of Snellville, Georgia, is now awake and alert but remains in critical condition battling the hideous infection, after falling from a home-made zip line into infected water near the Little Tallapoosa River on May 1. She suffered a deep gash in her calf and despite it being cleaned and closed with 22 staples, a bacteria burrowed deep into the wound and caused necrotizing fasciitis, forcing surgeons to amputate her left leg. Copeland’s parents told her Thursday that the doctors want to remove her hands and remaining foot, reported the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the brave student replied that she was a “little confused but would figure it out.” “She smiled and raised her hands up, carefully examining them,” father Andy Copeland wrote on his Facebook page on Friday. “She then looked at us. We all understood her next three words… ‘Let’s do this.’” Aimee’s dad explained how they had come to expect the inevitable after watching the startling transformation in her hands over the past few days. “They went from a splotchy purple color to a red tone and then to a pinkish flesh tone… back to an angry red,” he wrote. “The doctor explained that her body was trying hard to heal her hands, but the blood flow was too poor.” Andy said he was blown away by the strength of his daughter when he explained to her, “Aimee, these hands are not healthy, they are hampering your progress. “I have never seen such a strong display of courage,” he revealed. “Aimee shed no tears, she never batted an eyelash. I was crying because I am a proud father of an incredibly courageous young lady.” The bacteria that triggered the infection destroying the University of West Georgia Psychology student’s body, Aeromonas hydrophila, thrives in warm climates and fresh water. While common, the germ rarely causes flesh-eating disease. But when it does, the infection carries a fatality rate upward of 60 percent, according to a 2010 report published in the Journal Clinical Microbiology Reviews.
