Sarah and Bristol Palin to Family Guy: You Suck!

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane now has something in common with Levi Johnston: both have been bitch slapped by the Palins. On Sunday night, Fox aired an episode of this popular sitcom that featured a girl with Down Syndrome, who said at one point: “My mom’s the former governor of Alaska.” For a series known for crude and offensive humor, not much was actually made about the girl’s state. Stewie uttered the occasional rude line, but Stewie always utters the occasional rude line. It almost seemed as though MacFarlane inserted the Palin reference in there just to court controversy – and, of course, the self-absorbed “politician” snatched the bait. Palin took to Facebook and said the joke was a “kick in the gut” because she it “mocked” her son, Trig, who has Down Syndrome. She then turned it over to her daughter because it’s always healthy for an 18-year old to be in the center of a scandal. Choose a side in this feud? Bristol wrote: When you’re the son or daughter of a public figure, you have to develop thick skin. My siblings and I all have that, but insults directed at our youngest brother hurt too much for us to remain silent. People with special needs face challenges that many of us will never confront, and yet they are some of the kindest and most loving people you’ll ever meet. Their lives are difficult enough as it is, so why would anyone want to make their lives more difficult by mocking them? As a culture, shouldn’t we be more compassionate to innocent people – especially those who are less fortunate? Shouldn’t we be willing to say that some things just are not funny? Are there any limits to what some people will do or say in regards to my little brother or others in the special needs community? If the writers of a particularly pathetic cartoon show thought they were being clever in mocking my brother and my family yesterday, they failed. All they proved is that they’re heartless jerks. THG’s reaction to this mess: There’s absolutely no way Bristol Palin wrote that; It’s wrong to make fun of someone with Down Syndrome; Family Guy is an equal opportunity offender. It takes swipes at every race, religion and disability. Does it sometimes cross the line? Yes. We were appalled that it made multiples jokes about rape two weeks ago. But it’s been on the air for eight seasons and there’s clearly a market for its niche. If Palin were truly interested in anything but getting her name in the newspaper, she’d ignore this type of baiting. Her desperate need for PR is the only reason Levi Johnston is still around. If she’d ignored his taunts months ago, the world would have forgotten about him by now. No respectable political figure issues statements from her Facebook account. Palin is closer to Tila Tequila than Hilary Clinton.

Heather Mills: An Incredible Humanitarian

We should all be more like Heather Mills. No, we shouldn’t marry rich, whine about a $50 million divorce settlement and generally come across as all that’s wrong and spoiled about the world. But we should dedicate a chunk of our time and resources to charitable causes, as Paul McCarney’s ex claims to have done with her oversized bank account. “Most of it’s been given to charity, gone into ethical businesses or paid for a couple of properties for my daughter’s future security,” she said this week. “I could never sit with millions of pounds in the bank that could make matters change.” This story doesn’t exactly jibe with other reports on why Mills is nearly broke. Sources have said she spent $2 million on a pool for her home in Englad, for example. (Man, we gotta see that pool!) If you actually believe Heather is out of money because she spent it all on other people, you must also feel terrible for Tila Tequila and her miscarriage .

Wife of Dennis Hopper May Want Him Dead

Dennis Hopper has filed legal papers in his bitter divorce, and his doctor claims the less he has to do with his estranged wife, Victoria, the longer he’ll live. Women. You can’t live with ’em … hey, what’s on ESPN? The actor’s lawyer, Joe Mannis, says while his client battles advanced prostate cancer, Victoria has “repeatedly subjected him to severe emotional distress .” He’s not kidding, either According to Dr. David Agus’ declaration, “The presence of his estranged wife is hampering Mr. Hopper’s present cancer care…” “It is my belief and my recommendation that the less Mr. Hopper has to do with his estranged wife, the more likely he is to have his life extended.” This marriage may be in worse shape than Tiger and Elin Woods ‘. Dennis is asking the judge for an order keeping Victoria 15 yards away from him and barring her from his residence. Probably not the worst idea. Dennis filed for divorce against Victoria last month. She claims in response that Dennis’ adult children are pulling his strings and want to cut her out of his will. In their declarations, Dennis and his doctor say he is of sound mind to make his own decisions. If they divorce, she loses a 25 percent cut of Dennis’ estate. Hopper says that Victoria’s mother “…told me in November 2009 that I should leave the bulk of my property to [Victoria] as I was going to die soon.” “I found this statement distressing, inappropriate, bizarre, and disturbing.” Dennis also says Victoria and her mom grilled him late one night in December about how much money and property Victoria would get when he died. As for Victoria’s claims that Dennis smoked medical marijuana in front of their young girl, he says he has never smoked anything in front of the child. Dennis says Victoria’s demand that he not smoke within six hours of seeing their daughter is “an absurd request.” He says he would agreed to one hour. Dennis is asking for daily visitation rights to 6-year-old Galen.

‘American Idol’ Thins The Herd On Group Day

Some early favorites are sent packing during the first group round. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: FOX As usual, chaos, quarreling and drama ruled on group night on “American Idol.” Wednesday’s show found the 95 remaining singers shoehorning themselves into unnatural combinations that mostly upped the already tension-filled pressure-cooker atmosphere as battle lines were drawn over choreography, harmony, personality and anything else worth arguing about. Tears were shed, fingers were pointed and lyrics were blown time and again as the groups spent the traditional sleepless night working on their steps and trying to find their groove as viewers’ heartstrings were pulled by big Michael Lynche monitoring his wife’s labor on his cell phone and listening as his daughter was born across the continent in New York. First up was the group named Faith, singing Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” in near enough harmony to allow Charity Vance, Ashley Rodriguez and Michelle Delamor to advance even with Vance’s thin, squeaky high notes and spartan choreography. Lynche was up next with Team Awesome, singing the Temptations’ “Get Ready.” Country hunk Tim Urban did his part, as did Lynche, but the group’s other two members, third-timer Seth Rollins, a father of two, and Michael Castro, younger brother of Jason Castro , didn’t make the cut. For Castro it was strike two in the Hollywood round. Two groups chose to sing Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and, fortunately for Team Neapolitan, they went first. While Liz Rooney’s platinum-blonde hair with pink highlights grabbed plenty of attention, her bum notes appeared to melt the group’s chances. But Thaddeus Johnson and Pussycat Dolls-alike Jessica Cunningham redeemed the quartet with strong vocals. “I actually thought in its own way that was very good,” Simon Cowell said, praising their effort to the chagrin of rival group Destiny’s Wild, who were miffed that Neapolitan seemingly stole their idea to do the song a cappella. Wild had nothing to worry about, as their strong vocals, acrobatic choreography and infectious energy won the day. Between Todrick Hall’s back-flipping gymnastics and soulful vocals, Theri and Jareb Liewer’s impassioned singing and Siobhan Magnus’ scratchy soul bark, Wild made it — just barely. “It really was weird,” new judge Ellen DeGeneres said, comparing their outfits to Cirque du Soleil, but ultimately putting them through. The Mighty Rangers struggled to get enough practice time, and while Tori Kelly and Maddie Penrose did their part on Ne-Yo’s “Closer,” the house fell down when Mark Labriola and Kimberly Kerbow both forgot the words, prompting DeGeneres to ask them to stop. Kelly and Penrose got good news, while a weepy Labriola, wiggy Kerbow and Danny Jones were sent home, with Labriola tearfully begging for one more chance in his last year of eligibility. Just moments before Phoenix took the stage, one member bolted because she couldn’t stand the pressure, leaving Ben Honeycutt, Jeff Goldford, Moorea Masa and Jermaine Sellers to solider on singing Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son.” It wasn’t great, with Kara comparing it to “Survivor” and Cowell saying their excuses weren’t cutting it. “The struggle was you had 12 hours to learn the song — that is not hardship,” he said. Gritty crooner Goldford and smooth singer Sellers got passes, while the other two were sent packing. Note to future “Idol” wannabes: don’t pick Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape,” because if you forget the lyrics and toss bum notes, you will fail. Stefani was not kind to Orlando auditioner Matt Lawrence, who spent four years in jail for robbing a bank when he was 15 or Amanda Shectman, who won the panel over at her audition with some drama-queen antics. Both bit it hard on “Escape,” forgetting the words and mumbling so unintelligibly that Cowell didn’t even let them finish. “There isn’t going to be any you stepping forward … it was so horrific,” he said, summarily dismissing the quartet. Middle C brought it with Janell Wheeler, Jermaine Purifory and pretty boy Casey James nailing their version of Ne-Yo’s “Closer,” while early front-runner Andrew Garcia lifted his group Three Men and a Baby higher, anchoring a solid performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One” that also featured soulful turns from 17-year-old Katie Stevens and recent high school grad J. B. Ahfua. The final group was The Dreamers, a five-piece that seemed to spend most of their time arguing. Rock mom Mary Powers started things off by throwing a nervous laugh into her intro on Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” which drew a harsh stare from Cowell. With lame choreography and thin vocals, things weren’t much better for Texas bartender Hope Johnson, tone-deaf waitress Margo May or nervous-looking Texas teen Alex Lambert. “It’s like the dream died somewhere on that stage,” DioGuardi quipped. Despite the drama, Powers, Johnson and Lambert made it through, joining the 68 other singers who made it to the next round. Hollywood continues next week in the wind-up to the choosing of the top 24. Kell on Earth: For Whom the Kell Tolls

We were so busy buying bread and toilet paper for the impending snowstorm last night that we missed Kell on Earth . Luckily fictional freelancer Betsey Morgenstern was there during the filming, so she filled us on what happened. The Emu, The Witch, and the Wardrobe Malfuction By Betsey Morgenstern Last we left off, the computer glitch I hacked into Kelly Cutrone ‘s computer system at People’s Revolution PR caused the lists for the Shadow Ralph Pucci show to print out all wrong and Little Stephanie was freaking out and about to cry and Kelly was all, “If you have to cry, cry outside,” and I just laughed and laughed. Hahaha. That’s what Betsey said. It’s an hour before the show and the client is demanding the list and the seating chart but because they can’t print the list out, we’re totally screwed. But Kelly is a cool character and she has a solution. We’re handwriting out the lists and filling in the blanks and, instead of having a paper list that’s wrong, she has us bring all our computers to the site so that we can use the list that’s in the database that is correct. God, Kelly does think quick on her feet. I’m still pissed at Little Stephanie and don’t want this to go smoothly at all, so I formulate a plan. I get on Craigslist and some of the fashion blogs and leave this post: Hey everyone, I work for the PR company that does the Shadow Ralph Pucci show and there aren’t nearly enough people coming tonight and we need bodies to fill the seats badly . Just show up at 7 in the tents and tell the girl at the desk that Stephanie put you on the list. They’ll give you a seat to see the show. You’ll get some fashion, and we’ll get a full house. Everyone wins! We get to the venue and hell is breaking loose at the front door. While Kelly scampers around backstage me and 7 other black-clad PR girls are trying to work the door. They’re checking people on the computer and writing out seat assignments for everyone who is supposed to be there. That’s what we were supposed to do at least. I wasn’t even looking people up I was just putting them in random seats, let Kelly figure it out inside. That’s when all the dummies from the internet started showing up demanding seats, even though they weren’t even invited. Emily was freaking out about how all these nobodies were just showing up trying to fool their way into a show. She was all, “Who are these people? Who told them they could do this.” I didn’t dare answer, I just smiled and said, “People can be such assholes.” Things were getting horrible for Kelly inside, I heard her over the radio saying that Ralph Pucci was getting all upset because there were photographers backstage and he was bitching about them being too close and then they would go away and he would bitch that there was no one taking his picture and then they would come and he would be like “Get those idiots away from me. I am an artiste !” Kelly decided to leave and help sort out the mess with the seating, kicking people out of the front row who thought they were supposed to sit there. Oops! Was that my fault? One guy even gave her all this attitude and when she said, “I’m sorry, you can’t sit here,” he was all, “You should be sorry!” I was ready for Kelly to throw him to the ground and punch him in the face, but I have learned in my short time working for her that she is much more professional than you would imagine. The show itself went well, but everything else was just a mess. Kelly got fired the next day. When she found out she hung up the phone with a loud bang and cursed and swore. At the intern desk nearby, I just hung my head low so that my hair would cover my face as I giggled while attaching 61-cent stamps to envelopes that only needed 44-cent stamps. That’s wasting 21 cents an envelope. See, Big Stephanie is in charge of the interns and she is basically an emu. She’s tall and slender and her head darts around in random directions, but she doesn’t do much of anything. Also her brain is the size of two peanuts squished together. After spending 20 minutes showing everyone how to use a phone (which, duh), she then told us to mail all these invitations to the Generations Denim presentation that was happening the next week. I asked, “Stephanie, which stamps do we use?” She said, “No one told me so, I don’t know.” “Well, then we should use the more expensive ones so that we’re sure they get there, right?” “I was given no direction, so I don’t know.” “OK, then I’m going to use the more expensive ones.” “I’m not going to tell you to do that so I don’t get blamed, but I’m not not going to tell you to do that either.” Of course 20 minutes later Emily tells her that she should use 44-cent stamps so then we have to peel all the 61-cent stamps off and put them back onto the little sheet the come on and put on the 44-cent stamps. Oh, it’s such a joy working with Big Emu Stephanie. I swear to god I would have quit by now if it weren’t for Tim, the hot Irish fellow intern who I always flirt with at work. We had a real run in a few days after the stamp incident. We were all in the office and Little Stephanie went with Little Andrew to get her roots touched up, and Big Stephanie had us sending out gift bags full of jeans to all the editors who would be going to the Generations Denim fashion presentation. We asked B.S. what to do and she said, “I don’t know, but they need to go out now. So do them now. Just do them.” So Tim picks up a sharpie and starts writing all the editors names on the bag. Mary was taking the jeans off the shelf, Sally was folding them, Sam was opening the bag, Harry was placing the jeans in the bag, and I was putting the bags on the floor. We had a whole system. That is until Kelly shows up in the room and sees the nasty tattered bags with loose jeans in them. “This isn’t how you send a gift,” she screamed. We told her that Big Stephanie told us to send them out right away but didn’t tell us how, and she called everyone together and gave us a big lecture about how we’re going to fuck up her business and then she and her daughter will be out on the street and will have no food and her daughter will have no clothes, so she and her daughter can’t go through her closet and play “back to school looks” like she is the star of an eight-year-old fashion show. Anyway, she tells us to take a 30 minute break because she needs her space. I make sure that I’m walking out next to Tim. “Hey, Tim, that was really harsh back there.” “I knoooow,” he brogues. “I dinna want to upset Kella. I feel realla baaa.” I kind of have no idea what he is saying, but as the strange syllables pour out of his beautiful mouth, I start to get a little horny. And we do have 30 minutes to do whatever we want.”Hey, Tim, know what will make you feel better? Maybe we should have sex.” “That sounds fun. But where are we ginna gooo?” “Let’s just walk down Broadway a little bit. They have a public bathroom at Uniqlo. I’m sure they won’t mind if we use that.” “Come on. That sounds like fin.” We went to the store and I had a little poke around with his shellaleigh and we scared a whole bunch of fat tourists from Florida, and it took way longer than I thought it would. What guy last 45 minutes in a public toilet? After we were done we had be gone from Kelly’s for like an hour. When we got into the office, she was pissed. “Tim, where the fuck have you been? I’m trying to run a business here. I said go for 30 minutes, I meant 30 minutes, not come back whenever the fuck you want. Where have you been?” “Oh, Kella. I was, ah…I was ah…tryin’ to call me mum. Yeah. She’s rill worried about me, because I haven’t called home in foreva, so I was tryin’ to find a pay phone so I could call.” “Tim, that’s so sweat,” Kelly said. As soon as you mention mothers her sweet side comes out and she turns into a genuinely kind human being. Tim knew this, the only problem was that his mother died in a car crash when he was 12. “Call her now,” Kelly insisted handing the phone toward him. He didn’t know what to do and just stood there. “Call me,” I whispered out of the side of my mouth while pulling on his pant leg. He nodded like he heard me and I ran off to the bathroom and turned my phone on vibrate. When the phone rang, I put on my best Irish accent and started talking dirty to Tim. He really liked it, even though he had to pretend like he was talking to his mother. Then Kelly insisted on talking to me. I think my accent was good enough, and we giggled and cooed for a few minutes and Kelly was satisfied that she was a nice kind person and all was right with the world. It was a lot to go through for a shag, but Tim was really worth it. When we got back into the intern room, everyone was pissed at Big Stephanie for getting us in trouble so we came up with a plan. The next day when we showed up for work and people asked if we knew we were supposed to work at the Generations denim show, we would all say, “No,” so that Stephanie would get in trouble. The plan went off without a hitch, and Emily even cussed Stephanie out across the office for being an incompetent emu boob. Of course, we all still ended up working at the presentation where the models just stood around in this room with a giant tree made out of recycled newspapers or some shit and the walls were covered in cardboard. In another room, Kelly created a rain fall effect by taking a bunch of Swarovski that her friend George Wayne , the Vanity Fair contributor had swallowed, shat out, and buffed back to a fine polish. One of the models in the room was named Maurice and I was going to have him. Before the show, I started to chat him up and he kept rebuffing me, telling me that there was no way he was going to sleep with some lowly PR girl and then he had the audacity to ask me to go get him a glass of water. What? Oh please, Maurice, better men then you have turned me down, and then to order me around. Yes, I went to go get him his water, but I also stopped by my purse where I happened to have a spare rufie (don’t ask) and slipped it into his drink. Actually, only half because who knows when I might need the rest. “Here you go, Maurice, dear. Enjoy.” Of course, 20 minutes into the show, he totally passed out, taking down half of the George Wayne memorial Swarovski crystal curtain. I was hoping that he would have to like there half dead for the entire show, but Kelly is too good for me. She got the paramedics there, took care of Maurice and then got them out before anyone even noticed. One of these days, Kelly, I’m really going to fuck you up, but it appears today was not the day. Just you wait, Kelly. Just you wait.

The Teabaggers Are Just College Protesters with More Tricorner Hats

With the Tea Party convention having just ended and with organizers already planning another one for this summer (in Vegas maybe!), it is time to cast judgment on the movement: these guys are old right-wing college activists. Like remember when a bunch of NYU kids locked themselves in the food court to protest NYU’s financial chicanery and also the Israeli occupation of Gaza? And then some more established campus activist groups basically said they didn’t have any idea this shit was going to happen and lots of other people who sympathized with them politically found them terribly embarrassing? That is basically the Teabagger Movement. First they were theoretically against bank bailouts, but now they are opposed to Kenyan Socialists who Hate America. They are not just taking back NYU, they are taking back all of America! This is a problem with our limited, mediated, comic strip version of “history:” people have decided that the way to seize control of your own life and this crazy world is to go all 1960s, like you have seen in a movie. Many of these Tea Party people are actually old enough to have lived through the ’60s, but they weren’t on the fun side. Ben McGrath’s New Yorker story on the movement had this fascinating little moment with a local Kentucky teabagger: Don Seely invited me to his house for coffee the day after the rally at the Kentucky fairgrounds, and showed me his Air Force Commendation Medal, awarded for meritorious service from 1967 to 1971. “At this age, I was so ignorant,” he said. “Every once in a while, you’d catch a glimpse on TV of Martin Luther King-all that kind of stuff was going on. I graduated college in December of ’66. About a year after I left, that’s when all the riots happened. I’m thinking, What is going on?” Seely had always wanted to be a pilot, but, because of poor eyesight, he ended up an engineer in a satellite-control facility. The medal was accompanied by a photograph of Seely in his captain’s uniform, and he said that Amber, after looking at the image, had proclaimed that he was the only person she knew who’d kept the same hair style for nearly fifty years: short, straight, and parted neatly on the far right. Yeesh. And guess what: his daughter goes to the New School. The New School! It is totally fun to be a part of a big movement, and to convince yourself that this big movement you are a part of is not only morally right, but also secretly incredibly popular. You have to be attacked and beset on all sides by shadowy powerful interests—Soros, corporations, the political elite, ACORN—but that just makes you feel even cooler. And when you’re showered with attention for your work, you start to believe your own hype. The ratio of media to tea party convention attendees was like 1 to 3. 200 members of the media arrived to cover a convention half the size of Daily Kos’ first convention in 2006. The steep cost of attending made the conventioneers richer, and thus calmer, than the angry folks who showed up for the protests with the crazy signs that we all remember so well. While some in the movement acknowledge the debt they owe to true ’60s radicals (the only reason you hear so much about Obama’s supposed affinity for Alinsky on the right is because the activist arm of the movement is explicitly copying his tactics), the majority of the new populist conservstives adopt a ’60s protest strategy while claiming to be Tea Partiers (and comparing themselves to the Founders when they are, in fact, a bit more like those white populist Jacksonians )—like a campus activist might compare himself to a Freedom Rider rather than just another sad rich kid. The great irony is that entitled young Campus Activists tend to “grow up” and get jobs supporting the post-industrial capitalist superstructure, while these are people who’ve turned to juvenile attention-craving ’60s-aping dress-up parties as putative adults. But let them have their fun! Student protests are always destroyed by forces both outside and, more often, internal. This white populist movement has received far more coverage than its actual size merits (60,000 people on the Mall is, what, the Halloween parade?), and as whatever grassroots, populist elements of the movement that remain are fully co-opted by the actual Republican Party (and the US Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s most influential political party) they’ll find themselves just as disillusioned with the process as a sophomore who just go this first taste of tear gas.
